Welcome to Global Breakouts, Deadline’s fortnightly strand in which we shine a spotlight on the TV shows and films killing it in their local territories. This week we’re headed to South Africa, where psychological thriller drama Dam has captured eyeballs through its mix of mystery, social commentary and supernatural elements. The second season dropped earlier this year and is one of streamer Showmax’s top series. With nods to Ire Levin-era dramas like Rosemary’s Baby and The Boys From Brazil, Dam is part of a growing roster of South African TV series and films making a mark across the African continent and beyond.

The psychological thriller stars Analeigh Tipton as a young, ambitious actress who will stop at nothing to become famous, however things don't go as planned. Abandoned by her friends and family and with her career in jeopardy, starlet Markey Marlowe is sequestered in a duplex with a reclusive landlord who just may be more dangerous than she is. The full cast includes Tyler Labine, Lauren Bowles, Monique Coleman, Natasha Loring, Alex Lombard, and Josh Davis. This looks like an intense thriller about an obsessive starlet and crazy landlord in Los Angeles, but it doesn't seem there's much more than that going on here. When its done wrong its usually done Very wrong and when its good Well I cant remember the last time it was! What also works against The Dinosaur Project is that you just cant help but compare it to Jurassic Park...

The British flick hit Empire cinemas earlier this month and is now available to buy here in the UK on both Blu-ray and DVD. In the grand scheme of things, there is a really small minority of actors who can claim to have appeared in a film about dinosaurs, yet joining that exclusive collective are young actors Matt Kane and Natasha Loring, stars of the upcoming adventure The Dinosaur Project – and we had the opportunity to speak to the pair ahead of the film’s release.

Sib Bennett’s found footage thriller is set in the Congolese jungle, where we follow a group of explorers who stumble across a colony of dinosaurs. Kane plays Luke – a troublesome youngster who sneaks himself on the trip to be alongside his father, whilst Loring undertakes the role of Dr. Liz Draper.

If there is one thing you can say about Sid Bennett’s The Dinosaur Project, is that it is exactly what you would expect from a found footage orientated, British film about dinosaurs. And that, unfortunately, is not a positive acknowledgement.

The film begins as a couple of local inhabitants in the Congolese jungle find a bag which has tapes of footage within it, documenting a British group of explorers’ improbable journey into the jungle where they discovered a colony of dinosaurs. Amongst those ambitious explorers – who had set off to Africa based on sightings of an unidentifiable sea creature – are Marchant (Richard Dillane), his troublesome teenage son Luke (Matt Kane), Dr. Liz Draper (Natasha Loring), and Charlie (Peter Brooke), amongst others.

As the group’s helicopter crashes in the wilderness, they find themselves stranded, and as they delve deeper into the forest, they unearth a settlement of the creatures that had been presumed extinct,...

For the most part, found-footage films have largely been couched in the horror genre, and it’s always nice to see when they take a new direction.

Not only were we treated to the massive success story Chronicle this year, we’ve still got The Dinosaur Project to look forward to in just a few weeks’ time.

A new and admittedly less interesting exclusive quad poster for new British adventure thriller 'The Dinosaur Project' has arrived. It's not a patch on the previous quad, featured below, but just another reminder that the cool looking feature is set to hit UK theatres next month. The Sid Bennett helmed horror is somewhere between 'Jurassic Park' and 'Monsters' and uses the found footage style to showcase a small expedition group who discover a lost prehistoric world. Studio Canal have released a new trailer for their movie, The Dinosaur Project. Not sure what to make of it but I do know that i’d quite like to watch out when it’s release August 10th. It stars Natasha Loring, Richard Dillane, Matt Kane, Peter Brooke, Stephen Jennings and is directed by Sid Bennett. It does seem odd that no one has done any other big budget dinosaur movie since Jurassic Park. Not that this looks especially big budget compared to the Jurassic Park franchise but it looks pretty impressive nonetheless.

Back in May StudioCanal has announced The Dinosaur Project which has already commenced principal photography in South Africa. Yet to settle on a title, the IMDb is listing Peter Brooke (Red Lights, The Dark Knight) cast as "Charlie Rutherford", Natasha Loring as "Dr. Liz Draper" and Matt Kane. In November 2010, TV programmakers Sid Bennett and Tom Pridham and producer Nick Hill walked into the London office of StudioCanal with an idea for a movie "about a father-and-son documentary team who discover dinosaurs in the African jungle." They had an outline, a showreel, a budget, a plan for the vfx and a clear timetable to progress rapidly into production -- but no script. StudioCanal took the bait. Budget is under $16 million. Former Lark Rise to Candleford star John Dalgleish is set to return to the screen next week in the new Channel 4 drama series Beaver Falls. Dalgleish is joined in the cast by Arsher Ali and Samuel Robertson. The three young actors play a trio of students who became housemates while at Oxford Brooke’s University. Having finished their college degrees, the trio head to America where they land jobs as summer camp attendants in the town of Beaver Falls. The camp attendees are mostly the spoiled offspring of wealthy Californians. The six episode drama explores the trials and tribulations of the three young men as they try to make the most of their last summer as students.

The first casting news for the upcoming cinéma-vérité effort from StudioCanal featuring nature's greatest creatures, dinosaurs, is finally here, and we have the scoop on who will be finding footage that was better left lost. Dig it!

The IMDb (so take this with a grain of salt) is listing Peter Brooke (Red Lights, The Dark Knight) cast as "Charlie Rutherford", Natasha Loring as "Dr. Liz Draper" and Matt Kane. The flick has already commenced principal photography in South Africa.

The film marks the directorial debut feature from CGI experts Sid Bennett and Tom Pridham, who recently formed their own production company, Kent Films. StudioCanal is handling world sales.

The project is described as “Jurassic Park meets Blair Witch in the style of District 9.” But producer Nick Hill also notes: “It’s not grainy hand-held; it will look beautiful and crisp and clear.”
