The iconic 2001 Reese Witherspoon comedy, Legally Blonde, pulls ahead of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom on streaming.
Per FlixPatrol, the hit 24-year-old comedy Legally Blonde took the #3 spot on Peacock's top 10 most streamed shows in the United States as of July 5, 2025. This puts the film ahead of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom despite the recent release of Jurassic World Rebirth. The 2018 Jurassic World film quickly became a streaming hit, but in a huge upset, has been beaten out by the comedy. Considered one of the staple films of the 2000s, the legal comedy follows Witherspoon as sorority girl turned Harvard student Elle Woods and her initial mission to win back her ex-boyfriend, Warner Huntington III (played by Mathew Davis). Currently, just ahead of Legally Blonde sits Despicable Me 3 at #2 and The Woman in the Yard at #1.

Today, Prime Video announced a major development in the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series. The streamer revealed through Deadline that none other than '90s heartthrob James Van Der Beek has joined the cast in a recurring role. The Dawson's Creek and Apartment 23 star will share the screen with the new Elle Woods (Lexi Minetree), but at this point we don't know in how many episodes he will participate. A release date for Elle is yet to be announced.
Per Deadline, Van Der Beek will play the city’s new mayoral candidate and current school district superintendent, Dean Wilson. Since the new series covers Elle Woods' high school years, this may suggest that Dean Wilson and the young girl will go head-to-head on different occasions. In the movie series, Elle became known for not catering to people in positions of power, so the series might show how the future lawyer developed her backbone.

The new Elle Woods is out and about in new set images from the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series. Lexi Minetree, who was handpicked by original star Reese Witherspoon to portray the younger version of the character, is clad head-to-toe in pink in the new images, which come via Backgrid. The prequel series, Elle, is set to stream on Prime Video. The images portray the high-school-aged Woods on a shopping trip with a group of friends, all wearing distinctly 1990s fashions. That's in keeping with the series' timeframe, which will depict the high school years of Woods before the events of the 2001 movie, which saw her head off to law school and prove to be surprisingly adept at jurisprudence.

Prime Video began production on its new series, Elle, and on April 2, Reese Witherspoon released a first-look photo of Lexi Minetree as Elle Woods.
When reporting on the series update, Deadline shared Prime Video commits to going back in time to tell Elle's past right: "You can tell they’ve gone back in time as the teen uses her clear phone to speak to her friends on a landline, as many did in the '90s. And in true Elle Woods fashion, she’s wearing a pink hoodie and surrounded by her pink bedding."
Viewers can expect a lot of pink attire, corded phones, and possibly some great dialogue. If they fully commit, the audience will be transported back to a different era of music and feel like we're in the Legally Blonde films with a younger spin.

Legally Blonde was a highly successful movie that spawned a sequel and a musical production. Now, the franchise is expanding with a prequel television series called Elle.
The series will tell the story of what Elle Woods got up to before she became the sorority sister who broke barriers at Harvard Law. The original Elle, Reese Witherspoon, who serves as executive producer for the new show, recently shared the first image of the 90s-set outing in a post on Instagram. The new Elle, Lexi Minetree, is seen lying on a pink bedspread - pink being the color most closely associated with the character and her unapologetically girly franchise - and speaking into a retro phone.

The Woods family tree has sprouted more fruit. That’s the weirdest way we could think of to tell our readers that the Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle, has found its patriarch. Today, it was confirmed that That Thing You Do! alum, Tom Everett Scott, will be stepping into the shoes of Wyatt Woods — the father of Elle Woods, the character first made famous by Reese Witherspoon in the 2001 film that started it all. Scott joins the previously announced Lexi Minetree (Law and Order: Svu), who will appear as the teenage version of the aspiring lawyer, and June Diane Raphael(Grace and Frankie), who joins the cast as Wyatt’s wife, Eva. Wyatt was first portrayed by James Read (Charmed) in the original feature and tried to stand in Elle’s way of shipping off to Harvard to study law.

Get ready for more pink, more confidence, and a whole new side of Elle Woods on Prime Video.
I only saw “Legally Blonde” for the first time about four years ago, when my wife insisted we watch it together - it’s one of her all-time favorites. And yeah, even if some people call it a “girl’s movie” – I loved it. Reese Witherspoon’s Elle Woods is funny, smart, and endlessly charming, making it impossible not to root for her.
Now, Prime Video is taking us back to where it all started with “Elle,” a prequel series that explores Elle’s high school years and the experiences that shaped her into the pink-clad powerhouse we know and love. With Laura Kittrell (“Insecure”) as showrunner and Witherspoon producing, “Elle” is shaping up to be a must-watch for longtime fans and anyone who wants some high school nostalgia. Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios and Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine are getting closer to finding the next Elle Woods to lead its upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series.
Lexi Minetree (The Murdaugh Murders) and Madison Wolfe have tested for the role, Deadline has learned. According to inside sources, no decision has been made yet; one is expected soon. Reps for Amazon MGM Studios and Hello Sunshine declined to comment for this story.
The two have emerged as finalists in an extensive casting process that saw dozens of young actresses audition for the potentially star-making part that famously catapulted Witherspoon into the ranks of Hollywood’s A-list after she portrayed the character as an adult in the hit romantic comedy Legally Blonde (2001) and its sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003).
Witherspoon opened up about the auditioning process, which has been going on for about three months,...

Reese Witherspoon told Jimmy Fallon Friday night that the planned “Legally Blonde” prequel at Amazon Prime Video is moving ahead nicely, and the actress and producer is currently in the process of reviewing audition tapes for the role of a young Elle Woods.
“It’s so fun to watch,” she told the late-night host. “I just love them all.”
Witherspoon added that the audition process has changed, and the women trying out for the part are essentially creating “mini-movies.” As she put it, “I’m doing such a good job. And then now it’s different because we used to audition and we go into a casting office and now they have to shoot, produce, do all the costumes. They have to put together videos.”
“But they’re killing it. And now I’m having, it’s a really hard decision to make,” Witherspoon added.

The casting process for Prime Video’s Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle, is currently underway — and Reese Witherspoon has a difficult decision ahead of her regarding who will next don her iconic hot pink two-piece and assume ownership of Bruiser the Chihuahua.
Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote You’re Cordially Invited, her R-rated comedy opposite Will Ferrell, The Morning Show star gave an update to the show’s movement and how its formation came about.
Witherspoon said she was first inspired to explore the idea of a prequel series through viewing Netflix’s Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega as the macabre teen at boarding school: “I loved it, I watched every episode, I thought it was amazing.”
She continued, “I was like, ‘We should do Elle Woods in high school,’ because I wanted to see who she was before college, before law school, and I started having all these ideas,...

Reese Witherspoon is on the hunt for the perfect teenage Elle Woods.
The actress, who originated the role in the 2001 movie Legally Blonde and its 2003 sequel, recently shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that she now has “to pick a girl to play the young me” in the Prime Video prequel series, Elle.
Witherspoon said “it’s so fun to watch” all the audition tapes, adding, “I just love them all so much and they’re doing such a good job.”
However, it also reminded her of how different the casting process is in this day and age, compared to when she first auditioned for Legally Blonde.
“Now it’s different because we used to audition and we’d go into a casting office,” the You’re Cordially Invited actress explained. “Now they have to shoot, produce, do all the costumes [for auditions]. They have to put together videos that...

Reese Witherspoon may have pretended to go to law school in Legally Blonde, but she was surprised to learn that some thought she actually did study that.
While appearing on The Graham Norton Show, Witherspoon reflected on having to do jury duty years after the 2001 film’s release.
“Listen, I did not want to do jury duty,” Witherspoon said. “But I remember it was probably seven years after Legally Blonde, I got called for jury duty and it was in Beverly Hills. I thought, ‘Surely they’re not gonna pick me.’ They picked me for a long trial, y’all. It was probably two weeks.”
When Witherspoon’s You’re Cordially Invited co-star Will Ferrell, who was also on the show, teased that two weeks wasn’t “that long” the actress reiterated, “It was two solid weeks, every day going in.”
