Max to Release Asl Version of 'The Last of Us' Before Season 2 Debut
Image
With the second season of HBO's hit apocalyptic drama show starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey on the horizon, The Last of Usis making groundbreaking strides in accessibility to further encompass the spirit of the video game it's based on. Naughty Dog's best-selling game franchise, The Last of Us, features unique and innovative accessibility mechanics, especially regarding the infected monsters called Clickers, whose fungus has blinded them, and therefore they rely on their hyper-sensitive hearing to track down prey. Players relied on their hearing to stealth their way past Clickers, but Naughty Dog found an equally scary and interactive way for deaf players to avoid the fungus monsters, which involved visual clues instead of auditory ones. Now, the show is embodying the game's accessibility by releasing an American Sign Language version of the first season, as well as one of the upcoming second season, featuring Coda's Daniel Durant.

‘The Last of Us’ Gets Asl Edition on Max from ‘Coda’ Star Daniel Durant Ahead of Season 2

The “clickers” in the “The Last of Us” are zombies whose fungus has grown so infected, it has both blinded them and made their hearing hyper-sensitive. In the video game on which the hit HBO television series is based, players use stealth to evade them and respond to the sound of the monsters’ clicks in order to survive.

For Deaf players, developer Naughty Dog’s game is top of the line in terms of accessibility, implementing subtle visual cues to make players aware of looming danger, putting those players on equal footing with hearing players. It’s only fitting then that the series adaptation of “The Last of Us” be as inclusive for Deaf viewers as the game is.

HBO is set to launch an Asl version of both the first season of its hit series “The Last of Us” and the upcoming second season, IndieWire can reveal exclusively. Daniel Durant,...

Dancing with the Stars Moves Back to ABC Following Tyra Banks Exit
Image
The streaming experiment for Dancing with the Stars doesn't seem to have worked out, as the show is already set to return to ABC for its next season. After spending 30 seasons on television, the show was moved to Disney+ last year where it streamed season 31. Deadline now reports that the show is heading back to ABC after spending one season on Disney+. As viewership numbers for the show weren't released by the streamer, it's hard to say how well it did in comparison to when it was on ABC. Notably, it was the first live show to debut on Disney+.

Season 32 will also be bringing in another major change. Tyra Banks has already announced that she is gone from the show and will not be back for the next season of Dancing with the Stars. It was later revealed that Julianne Hough was coming in to replace her, and she'll...

Deaf Representation Is Improving in Film and TV, but Falls Short in Video Games, Animation and Kids TV (Exclusive)
Image
Deaf representation has come a long way in Hollywood.

“Coda’s” release and subsequent best picture Oscar win marked an important moment for deaf audiences. It showed the most significant representation of the community on a global stage since 1986’s “Children of a Lesser God” earned Marlee Matlin a best actress prize.

“Hollywood is making that shift from diversity for optics to something deeper,” says Lauren Ridloff, a deaf actor best known for her work on “Eternals” and “The Walking Dead.”

That deeper shift includes recent projects where deaf representation has been the focus of major storylines. Director James Cameron called on C.J Jones to create Na’vi sign language, featured in “Avatar: The Way of Water.” HBO’s “The Last of Us” offered up another landmark moment when the show about a post-apocalyptic world featured Keivonn Woodard, as a young deaf Black man trying to survive zombie hordes. Last year,...

Marlee Matlin, Paul Feig, Ramy Youssef & 34 More Sign Open Letter Advocating for Disabled Writers in Hollywood
Image
Disabled workers and disability activists in Hollywood are speaking out in support of expanded employment opportunities in the industry. The Thursday, March 23 open letter, signed by stars such as Ali Stroker, Chris Cooper and Marianne Leone, Daniel Durant, Jason Katims, Krista Vernoff, Lauren Ridloff, Marlee Matlin, Paul Feig, Ramy Youssef, and Siân Heder, was created with the Inevitable Foundation to encourage the TV and film industry to hire disabled creatives in writing, producing, directing, and more positions, not just disability consultants. The Inevitable Foundation is a non-profit “working to close the disability representation gap in film and television. Currently, disabled people make up over 20 percent of the U.S. population but represent only two percent of characters on screen and less than one percent of film and TV writers,” the org said in the Thursday press release. “By funding and mentoring mid-career disabled screenwriters, Inevitable Foundation is creating a world...

Marlee Matlin, Ramy Youssef, Lauren Ridloff, Ryan O’Connell and Ali Stroker are among the Hollywood names supporting the Inevitable Foundation’s open letter calling on the industry to shift away from relying on disability consultants and instead hire creatives with disabilities on film and TV projects.

A total of 35 deaf, disabled and allied writers, actors, showrunners and producers signed their names to the letter written and published by the Inevitable Foundation’s co-founders Marisa Torelli-Pedevska and Richie Siegel as part of their new Hire Disabled Writers, Not Just A Disability Consultant initiative.

Paul Feig, Jason Katims, Sian Heder, Liz Tigelaar, Krista Vernoff, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, Josh Feldman, Shoshannah Stern and Timothy Omundson also backed the open letter, pledging to, in their own creative capacities, put more disabled creatives in positions of power and move away from the consultant model. It’s a system frequently used “instead of — not...

Oscars 2023: The importance of a good narrative on the journey to the big night
Image
One might think that the only path to winning an Oscar is to do good enough work to be respected and appreciated by your academy member peers – or just have the right friends in the academy’s actors branch, huh? But there’s something that’s almost as important in getting through the months and months of awards campaigning, and that’s a narrative.

Narratives are something that are often mentioned as we get closer to Oscar night, but it’s something that runs throughout the life of a movie from whenever or wherever it debuts through whatever junkets or interviews are done over the course of a movie’s life on the way to Oscar night.

For instance, how many times had we heard the story of “The King’s Speech” screenwriter David Seidler on the way to that movie’s four Oscar wins, including for Best Picture? Born in...

Where does Troy Kotsur’s Oscar-winning performance rank in terms of screen time?
Image
For Oscar voters, the unspoken rule regarding supporting male performances is the longer the better. An average winner in the category clocks in with 33 minutes and 55 seconds of screen time, and the last five champs have consistently raised that bar. Last year’s victor, Troy Kotsur, was honored for appearing in 35 minutes and 34 seconds (or nearly one-third) of Best Picture winner “Coda.” Of the 86 performances that have won Best Supporting Actor, his falls comfortably within the longer half.

Unlike the three Best Supporting Actor recipients who directly preceded him – Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), and Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”) – Kotsur’s category placement was uncontested, meaning there was no talk about him instead belonging in the lead race. Emilia Jones, the un-nominated star of “Coda” who plays Kotsur’s daughter, towers over him by a margin of 52 minutes. His is...

Sundance Film Festival Market Preview: Could Fears of a WGA Strike Fuel a Buying Spree?
Image
With Covid-related production and release delays mostly in the rearview mirror, those arriving this week at the Sundance Film Festival will face another potential conundrum.

The hope among filmmakers and interested sellers is that the dual requirements of a two-tracked exhibition system — films for theaters and movies for streaming — will fuel a bull market. Fears abound that as streamers claim to restore fiscal sanity while Wall Street no longer cares about subscribers and content spends, the reckless content splurges of the past will cease to drive eyes-are-bigger-than-your-stomach purchases.

Save for Amazon’s Prime Video and Apple TV+, which arguably can still overbid, studios and streamers might be less willing to throw money at high-profile but commercially questionable titles. Concurrently, fears of an upcoming Writers Guild strike could lead to more wealth being spread around toward more movies in another variation on content-for-content’s sake spending.

The Most Memorable Dancing With The Stars Performances In 2022
Image
Dancing with the Stars is known for show-stopping, elaborate performances from celebrity contestants and troupe members alike. When the show moved from ABC to Disney+ in 2022, many fans were concerned that the dances, audience participation, and general style of the show would not be the same. Thankfully, with the addition of Alfonso Ribero as co-host and the variety of contestants, Dancing with the Stars season 31 was a success.

With contestants like The Bachelorette’s Gabby Windey, Jersey Shore’s Vinny Guadagnino, The Real Housewives of New Jersey’s Theresa Giudice, and RuPaul’s Drag Race legend Shangela, the season’s competition was fierce from the very beginning. Nearly every week, the ballroom said goodbye to one (sometimes two) contestants, with the most heartbreaking exit coming from Selma Blair in week 5 when she was advised by her doctors to pull out of the competition. Though only one pair was crowned the...
