Exclusive: Apple’s new feature Being Heumann has added Michael Patrick Thornton, Antwan Tolliver (Gimme My Money), Daniel Durant, Jon Beavers and Roberta Colindrez to its cast.

The film, based on author Judy Heumann’s bestselling memoir, follows activist Heumann (Ruth Madeley) as she leads over a hundred people with disabilities in a takeover of the San Francisco Federal Building, kicking off a 28-day sit-in. The protestors quickly form a community, refusing to leave until the government enforces Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which requires all federal spaces to become accessible.

Being Heumann is adapted, directed and produced by Academy Award-winner Siân Heder. She reunites with Durant, who played Leo Rossi in the Academy Award-winning film Coda, which Heder wrote and directed.

Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) is expanding the use of American Sign Language (Asl) on its streaming platform Max.

Starting April 13, Max subscribers will be able to activate Asl interpretation when they stream episodes of the second season of the hit dystopian drama “The Last of Us.”

Asl interpretation has been offered as an option on a handful of movies available on Max, including “Barbie,” “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” and the latest film from the “Godzilla x. Kong” series.

The Last of Us is the first series to support Asl interpretation, which will be offered by actor Daniel Durant and accessibility advocate Leila Hanaumi.

Deaf artists Anjel Piñero, Shaheem Sanchez and Daniel Durant were set to perform Asl during this year’s Super Bowl — but viewers watching the CBS telecast may not have actually seen them on air. That’s according to Oscar winner and Deaf actor Marlee Matlin, who expressed her frustration with the network on social media.

Marlee Matlin sent a strong message about her displeasure at CBS’ coverage of the Super Bowl Lviii pregame show on Sunday.

Super Bowl Lviii will kick off with a set of pre-game performances from Post Malone, Andra Day, and Reba McEntire. The three artists will perform at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday, Feb. 11 ahead of the big night, during which Usher will lead the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show.

McEntire will open the night with a performance of the national anthem, while Malone has taken on the task of delivering “America the Beautiful.” Day will round out the pre-game with her rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.

Reba McEntire will sing “The Star Spangled Banner” at this year’s Super Bowl, while Post Malone will perform “America the Beautiful,” the NFL has announced.

Additionally, Andra Day will sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” as part of the pre-game festivities.

Coda actor Daniel Durant will accompany McEntire by performing the National Anthem in Asl. Actress, model, and dancer Anjel Piñero will sign “America the Beautiful,” and actor and choreographer Shaheem Sanchez will sign both “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and the halftime show (which will be headlined by Usher).

The 2024 Super Bowl is set for Sunday, February 11th at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada.

Post Malone has two big festival appearances on the calendar, as he is set to headline both Governors Ball and Bonnaroo this summer.

Reba McEntire, Post Malone and Andra Day are heading to the Super Bowl.

The NFL and Roc Nation announced Thursday that the country music legend will perform “The Star Spangled Banner” at the Feb. 11 game, airing live on CBS from Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada. Post Malone, the singer-songwriter who has performed across various genres like rap, rock, pop and more, will perform “America the Beautiful,” while Grammy-winning R&b singer and Oscar-nominated actress Andra Day will sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

R&b superstar Usher will headline the Apple Music Super Bowl halftime show. He last performed at the Super Bowl in 2011, when he made a special appearance during the Black Eyed Peas’ set.

Exclusive: Jessica Alba (Sin City), Russell Harvard (Fargo), and Daniel Durant (Coda) are attached to star in sports feature film Flash Before the Bang, inspired by the true story of an all-deaf high school track and field team in 1980’s Oregon.

The film heralds from deaf writer-director Jevon Whetter, on whose experience the story is based. Oscar winners Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are exec producers along with Fanshen Cox in association with Trujulo Productions. Jessica Alba is also an exec producer.

Production is due begin in September in Georgia on the project, in which more than half of the characters in the ensemble cast will deaf and portrayed by deaf actors. Brothers Jevon and Delbert (producer) Whetter are from a multigenerational deaf family, while actors Harvard and Durant are also deaf.

Nicolas Cage and Bill Skarsgård are set to star in Lords of War, the sequel to Lord of War that reunites Coda producer Vendome Pictures with director Andrew Niccol.

Niccol will write and direct the sequel to his 2005 crime thriller Lord of War, with Cage reprising his role as arms dealer Yuri Orlov, and Skarsgård on board to play his son. In Lords of War, Orlov discovers he has a son, Anton, who is trying to top his father’s wrongs rather than stop them as he launches a mercenary army to fight America’s Middle East conflicts.

The sequel will shoot in fall 2023, with FilmNation Entertainment representing the international sales rights starting at the Cannes Film Festival. CAA Media Finance will handle the domestic rights.

The streaming experiment for Dancing with the Stars doesn't seem to have worked out, as the show is already set to return to ABC for its next season. After spending 30 seasons on television, the show was moved to Disney+ last year where it streamed season 31. Deadline now reports that the show is heading back to ABC after spending one season on Disney+. The cast of Coda features a talented actors in the coming-of-age story that helped lead it to win Best Picture at the Oscars. The movie is particularly notable for featuring several Deaf actors in central roles as part of the main Rossi family. The Coda cast is a mixture of up-and-coming actors and veterans who are finally receiving a chance to shine.

Directed by Sian Heder, Coda is centered on teenager Ruby Rossi, the hearing child of two deaf adults. Ruby finds herself torn between her passion for music and her role as her family's interpreter and bridge to the hearing world. Coda is a remake of a French film and received considerable buzz when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival before later being released for streaming on Apple TV+. In addition to receiving positive reviews, Coda became a breakout indie hit that led to it winning three Oscars including Best Picture.

Deaf representation has come a long way in Hollywood.

“Coda’s” release and subsequent best picture Oscar win marked an important moment for deaf audiences. It showed the most significant representation of the community on a global stage since 1986’s “Children of a Lesser God” earned Marlee Matlin a best actress prize.

“Hollywood is making that shift from diversity for optics to something deeper,” says Lauren Ridloff, a deaf actor best known for her work on “Eternals” and “The Walking Dead.”

That deeper shift includes recent projects where deaf representation has been the focus of major storylines. Disabled workers and disability activists in Hollywood are speaking out in support of expanded employment opportunities in the industry. The Thursday, March 23 open letter, signed by stars such as Ali Stroker, Chris Cooper and Marianne Leone, Daniel Durant, Jason Katims, Krista Vernoff, Lauren Ridloff, Marlee Matlin, Paul Feig, Ramy Youssef, and Siân Heder, was created with the Inevitable Foundation to encourage the TV and film industry to hire disabled creatives in writing, producing, directing, and more positions, not just disability consultants. The Inevitable Foundation is a non-profit “working to close the disability representation gap in film and television. Currently, disabled people make up over 20 percent of the U.S. population but represent only two percent of characters on screen and less than one percent of film and TV writers,” the org said in the Thursday press release. “By funding and mentoring mid-career disabled screenwriters, Inevitable Foundation is creating a world...

With Covid-related production and release delays mostly in the rearview mirror, those arriving this week at the Sundance Film Festival will face another potential conundrum.

The hope among filmmakers and interested sellers is that the dual requirements of a two-tracked exhibition system — films for theaters and movies for streaming — will fuel a bull market. Fears abound that as streamers claim to restore fiscal sanity while Wall Street no longer cares about subscribers and content spends, the reckless content splurges of the past will cease to drive eyes-are-bigger-than-your-stomach purchases.

Save for Amazon’s Prime Video and Apple TV+, which arguably can still overbid, studios and streamers might be less willing to throw money at high-profile but commercially questionable titles. Concurrently, fears of an upcoming Writers Guild strike could lead to more wealth being spread around toward more movies in another variation on content-for-content’s sake spending.

Sundance Film Festival added several new titles, including a documentary about NBA star Stephen Curry and A24’s sentimental drama “Past Lives,” to its 2023 lineup.
