Occupy Cannes Photo: Fantasia International Film Festival

“Thank you for paying attention to Troma,” says Lloyd Kaufman, sincerely, when we meet at the 2025 Fantasia International Film Festival. I find it difficult to understand how one could do otherwise – whatever one might think of it, it has a way of getting noticed. in fact, its guerilla marketing tactics are among the subjects of Lily Hayes Kaufman’s new documentary, Occupy Cannes, which the three of us, along with star Catherine Corcoran, are ostensibly here to talk about. But with Lloyd in the room, conversations have a tendency to wander.

As we get comfortable, I remind him of our last meeting, many years ago in Edinburgh, when its film festival coincided with its wider festival. His wife (Patricia Swinney Kaufman) had been very excited about attending that. He apologises that she hasn’t been able to join the team at Fantasia, explaining that she had to go.

In the independent film community, few names are as iconic as Troma Entertainment, the famously scrappy production company behind films like The Toxic Avenger and Class of Nuke ‘Em High. The company’s latest film, Occupy Cannes, is a documentary following the Troma Team as they headed to Cannes in 2013 to promote the premiere of Return to Nuke ‘Em High Vol. 1, only to run into opposition from the establishment… and the authorities.

Timed to the film’s 2025 Fantasia International Film Festival world premiere, FandomWire got the opportunity to speak with Occupy Cannes director Lily-Hayes Kaufman and its subjects, legendary Troma Entertainment founder Lloyd Kaufman and Return to Nuke ‘Em High and Terrifier actress Catherine Corcoran, about the future of independent film in the face of increasing restrictions. We’ve been hearing rumblings of a reboot of the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes franchise for a long time. Seventeen years, in fact. Now, after attempts by the duo behind the internet web series Ask a Ninja and filmmaker Dustin Ferguson to make a new movie fell through, a new entry in the franchise, titled Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence, has finally made its way through production and is set to receive a theatrical release this Halloween, courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The new Killer Tomatoes movie unveiled a promo video over the weekend (you can watch that in the embed above) and also has a presence at San Diego Comic-Con, where JoBlo’s own Mike Conway was able to catch up with several cast members and one of the producers!

The final wave of programming for this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival was announced this afternoon, with the fest running from July 17 through August 3, 2025.

Fantasia 2025 will mark the World Premiere of director Lily-Hayes Kaufman’s documentary Occupy Cannes, which will premiere at the festival on July 31, 2025. The documentary shines a spotlight on Troma’s unique approach to the Cannes Film Festival over the years, spotlighting their most recent effort to sell the film Return to Nuke ‘Em High at the event.

Iconic director Lloyd Kaufman and the Troma Team wage a punk-spirited battle championing independent art at Cannes in Occupy Cannes, presented through the lens of Kaufman’s daughters, Director Lily-Hayes Kaufman, Cinematographer Charlotte Kaufman (The Jinx; The Alabama Solution) and Producer Lisbeth Kaufman.

Hemlock Circle Productions Announces The Digital Release Of Summer Camp Horror Film "Marshmallow": "Hemlock Circle Productions, in partnership with Quiver Distribution, has announced that its latest horror sci-fi feature, Marshmallow, will be available to stream on Video On Demand (VOD) starting June 6, 2025.

Directed by Daniel DelPurgatorio and produced by Hemlock Circle, Marshmallow has been received positively by audiences since its debut at this year's Panic Fest, where it was awarded Best of Fest with DelPurgatorio winning Best Director. The film currently holds a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its intense suspense and narrative developments.

"Our partnership with Quiver Distribution has allowed us to reach an even wider audience for Marshmallow, and we're incredibly proud of the journey this film has taken from script to viewers’ screens," said Todd Friedman, producer at Hemlock Circle.

Art the Clown has become one of the most unexpected and shocking horror icons of modern cinema in the Terrifierfranchise. However, he was around long before he became the record-breaking masochistic killer audiences have come to love in his three movies, but a gut-wrenching moment involving actress Catherine Corcoran and a hacksaw turned him into one of the most unpredictable villains to have graced screens in years. Now, almost a decade after being murdered in the most brutal and graphic way possible, the actress has reflected on her part in making the unrated killer a worldwide phenomenon.

It returns to VHS with two new variants: a standard slipcase with new art by Neil Fraser for $30, and a book box edition featuring a gatefold cover and a glow-in-the-dark red tape, limited to 250, for $50.

A very small quantity of leftover variants from earlier pressings are also available while supplies last.

Expected to ship in June, each tape includes an exclusive introduction by Thornton plus an Art the Clown Makeup Time Lapse featurette after the film.

For optimal VHS viewing, the film has been cropped from its original aspect ratio to 4:3 full frame. It is officially licensed from Dread and Epic Pictures and approved by Leone.

Art the Clown. He’s a homicidal maniac. He’s a supernatural being. He’s disgusting. He’s amusing. He’s the latest cinematic madman to be added to the ranks of genre icons. And he’s been around longer than you might realize. He’s been lurking around for a couple of decades. His breakthrough moment came with the 2016 movie Terrifier – and we’re going to examine that film… and the bad clown at the heart of it all… with this episode of What Happened to This Horror Movie?

Writer/director Damien Leone first brought Art the Clown into the world with a short film called The 9th Circle, which was shot in 2006.The story centers on a young woman who’s creeped out by a strange clown in a train station. The clown ends up attacking her, delivering her to a coven of witches that are in direct contact with Satan himself.

Catherine Corcoran’s character Dawn was at the center of one of the most famous moments in the slasher movie Terrifier (a scene she reflected on a while back) – but Terrifier wasn’t her first credit in a genre movie, and she has gone on to work on several more genre movies since the release of that killer clown movie, including Faceless After Dark, which reunited her with Terrifier co-star Jenna Kanell. Corcoran is also co-host of the nightmare-themed podcast Scream Dreams. Now, Deadline reports that Corcoran has signed on to star in the thriller Jackalope alongside Alex Mandel (Killer Holiday), who happens to be the son of Howie Mandel, and Bryce Hirschberg of the Netflix dating show Too Hot to Handle.

Hirschberg, who made his feature writing and directorial debut with the 2017 drama Counterfeiters, will also be directing Jackalope from a screenplay he has written with producer and director of photography David Klassen.

One of the stars of Damien Leone’s original Terrifier movie, Catherine Corcoran has been set to star in the upcoming horror movie Jackalope, Deadline reports this morning.

Alex Mandel (Noobz, Howie Mandel Does Stuff), the son of Howie Mandel, will also star in Jackalope. Additionally, the site notes that Alex Mandel is on board as a producer.

Exclusive: Catherine Corcoran and Alex Mandel have joined Too Hot to Handle star Bryce Hirschberg’s latest film, thriller Jackalope.

Writer-director Hirschberg, known for 2017 film Counterfeiters and his appearance on Netflix dating show Too Hot to Handle, is also starring. He made the film alongside creative partner David Klassen, who co-wrote and serves as producer and director of photography.

The plot follows two brothers, whose quiet weekend retreat unravels into a deadline game of cat and mouse with the arrival of a hauntingly enigmatic woman who causes them to question how well they really know each other, and themselves.

First appearing in 2016 and the latest installment hitting theaters this year, the Terrifier franchise has been a success among horror fans with its scenes of unrelenting violence and chief antagonist, Art the Clown. The series is a saving grace for many fans who have been craving the type of escapism and macabre awe that seems to have been missing from the slasher genre. Up until recently, many fans voiced their discontent regarding many offerings that are tame in comparison and lack the operatic levels of violence that the Terrifier franchise is so unapologetic in depicting.

On the one hand, the series deserves praise for its use of practical effects and carnage that have reportedly traumatized some members of the viewing audience. The Terrifier franchise has found a fan base who crave violence and enjoy the feeling of being shocked. Beyond this surface level of visceral imagery and attempted transgression, there exists little else.

Faceless After Dark opens with a warning about the film’s use of strobing lights, and immediately we see Bowie sitting staring at the camera as neon purple lights flash on her face as the image grows progressively smaller and unintelligible voices babble louder and louder. That and several long, eye-straining montages scattered through the film make the warning more than justified
