Many have complained that they were tricked into watching the drama, thinking it was a rom-com as advertised. However, the “disappointing” ending has sparked a heated debate among fans online. Some viewers say the drama’s creators have not explored much to deliver a better finale.

On February 23, When The Stars Gossip broadcast its last episode. The drama premiered back on January 4, 2025. It was released as the first Korean space romance drama on Netflix, so fans across the world were eagerly looking forward to the series. On top of that, it also marked Lee Min Ho’s highly-anticipated return with a challenging role. Before discussing further, let’s have a look at the story.

I’m honestly a little bit disappointed with the latest turn of events in When The Stars Gossip. The show went from entertaining sci-fi-romantic drama with a lot of ups and downs to what seems like a try-hard pro-life show where nothing seems to go right. Guess there isn’t much to think about here; just focus on the main characters and their deteriorating states. I’ve got to admit Ryong’s character decline has me seriously annoyed, and I wish they’d done something different in this situation. It’s hard to make Lee Min-Ho look this pathetic, but I suppose they’ve managed somehow. Episode 15 doesn’t really give us much to work with, really. Exclusive: It’s hard not to start at the end when talking to Soo Hugh as Season 2 of her drama series Pachinko draws to a close. The Apple TV+ show follows a Korean family across four generations and takes in both historical events and family drama as the resolute Sunja moves from her home country to Japan. The denouement of the latest season is both satisfying and leaves the audience wanting more. There is still, it feels, some story to be told.

The second season of the Apple TV+ drama series “Pachinko” ended with powerful emotional moments and unresolved plot lines that could continue into future seasons. Based on the bestselling novel by Min Jin Lee, the show follows a Korean family across four generations through personal stories set against historical events in Korea and Japan.

A major revelation shook the core of the main character, Noa, portrayed by Kang Tae Ju. His girlfriend Akiko, played by Kilala Inori, told him the shocking truth: “Noa, Hansu is your father.” Learning this news that Hansu, played by Lee Minho, was his biological father and not the man he thought, Noa confronted Hansu. He also met devastated with his mother Sunja, portrayed by Youn Yuh-jung in the present and Minha Kim in the past.

With more TV available than ever, but Hollywood isn’t hiding the fact that abundance contains both promise and peril. More shows and platforms means a more segmented audience, and that it’s harder than ever for a show to find its true viewership due to marketing, subscriptions, and other obstacles.

It’s a conundrum that faces “Pachinko,” easily one of the most breathtaking, exceptional dramas on the air right now, from creator by Soo Hugh. Though it’s climbing the charts on Apple TV+, the show was infamously snubbed at the 2022 Emmys and its actual viewership remains unknonw.

“I just don’t think enough people know about our show,” Hugh told IndieWire during a conversation about the Season 2 finale, which premiered on October 11. “I don’t take it personally, because I don’t think it’s a slight against the show.

If the exquisite longing of Sunja (Minha Kim) and Hansu (Lee Min-ho) in “Pachinko” Season 2 are any guide, then anything can be a breakup track if it tries hard enough.

Kidding aside, one of the great pleasures of “Pachinko” is the extremely cinematic ways the show finds to propel the characters’ love for each other across time. That sense of a sustained feeling reaching across the generations is often visual, with slow dissolves across storylines that creator Soo Hugh likens to a pentimento — the art term for when the viewer can see discarded changes that hide underneath the surface of a painting.

Behind every choice that Solomon (Jin Ha) makes in 1989, or every anxiety that Sunja swallows up in post-war Japan, there’s context ahead of or behind them; and for a moment, hanging between beautiful compositions, the editing of “Pachinko” lets us see those layers. But particularly in Season...

Some of the biggest emotional moments in “Pachinko” have hinged on Sunja, the character portrayed by both Minha Kim and Yuh-Jung Youn in the Apple TV+ original. But few moments are as raw as the final conversation the middle-aged Sunja has with her eldest son Noa (Tae Ju Kang) in this season’s finale.

In many ways, the second season of “Pachinko” belongs to Noa. Desperate to give his son the best life possible, Hansu (Lee Minho) re-enters Sunja’s life, freeing her husband from prison and providing her family a safe place to life during America’s nuclear bombings. Slowly, Hansu comes to be a bigger and bigger part of Sunja and Noa’s life. By the time Noa is old enough to attend university, Hansu has established himself as a father figure and mentor to his biological son.

The Apple TV+ drama “Pachinko” has once again delivered emotionally fraught season finale.

The time-jumping family drama about Korean immigrants, based on Min Jin Lee’s 2017 novel, put the focus of the season-ender primarily on a college-aged Noa (Tae Ju Kang) in 1951, as he experiences not only college life and his first serious girlfriend, but also finally arrives at the point we’ve been waiting for all season — his finding out that the wealthy and corrupt businessman Koh Hansu (Lee Min-ho) is his biological father.

Also, in the 1989 storyline, the older Sunja (Youn Yuh-jung) ends her budding romantic relationship, while her son Mozasu (Soji Arai) must confront someone from his past as he attempts to stop his ambitious son Solomon (Jin Ha) from going down a dark path he knows all too well.

Warning: Spoilers for the Pachinko season 2 finale lie ahead.Pachinko season 3 gets a candid from creator Soo Hugh, who opens up about the show's viewership. Returning to Apple TV+ with widespread acclaim, the adaptation of the 2017 novel by author Min Jin Lee approached its second installment by building on the strong foundation of its debut year. This all builds to a Pachinko season 2 finale, which leaves the historical drama with plenty of room to grow, though a renewal has yet to be announced.

TVLine spoke with Hugh about the chances of Pachinko coming back for season 3. The creator and executive producer noted that she hasn't heard anything about a renewal and said that the focus was on celebrating season 2. Still, in the quote below, Hugh gives a reflective response about why the acclaimed adaptation hasn't broken out on the streaming charts:
