‘The Pickup’ Review: Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson Don’t Give a Truck in a Fitful Action Comedy
Image
A wheel almost literally comes off the armored truck where much of the action and most of the comedy takes place in Tim Story’s action-comedy “The Pickup” (a rather confusing name considering that’s another type of truck altogether). It’s early enough in the proceedings, so a quick repair makes the van roadworthy again. But sadly, no such fix exists for this ungainly star vehicle’s metaphorical wheels which, as the plot squeals around yet another credulity-defying twist, are soon flying off in all directions leaving the movie careening wildly across the freeway, gears grinding, axles sparking, while a checked-out Eddie Murphy and an overcompensatingly antic Pete Davidson strap in, grimly trying to gin up some buddy chemistry.

Murphy and Davidson play armored truck guards — veteran Russell and rookie Travis, respectively — thrown together on this particular day by circumstance and their mean-mannered boss Clark (Andrew Dice Clay). Clark...

‘The Pickup’ Review: What’s The Point Of Casting Eddie Murphy, Keke Palmer, & Pete Davidson?
Image
Nowadays, streaming has carved its own market and doesn’t exactly need to compete with theatrical releases to get the attention of the people. That said, back in the day, when it was still building its foundation by bringing in A-listers, their products used to have a certain level of quality that’d make audiences sit up and pay attention. I’m talking about movies like Okja, The Vast of Night, and Greyhound. However, some time during the pandemic, the attitude shifted towards using the popularity of the star cast to draw in people and then feed them slop in the name of “cinema,” thereby giving birth to terms like “slopbuster” or “mockbuster.” In my opinion, stuff like The Gray Man, The Tomorrow War, and Ghosted are the worst offenders. Now, having watched The Pickup, I think we are entering a new era of direct-to-streaming releases that aren’t even trying.

Keke Palmer
The Pickup review – Eddie Murphy’s heinous new comedy is worse than Norbit
Keke Palmer
The one-time king of comedy looks bored in Amazon’s unfunny slog, which also wastes Keke Palmer and Pete Davidson

The Pickup is easily the worst Eddie Murphy movie in recent memory. That’s right: worse than A Thousand Words, the Liar Liar ripoff so underwhelming that Murphy had to take a break from making comedies. And worse than Norbit, the Nutty Professor ersatz probably costing him the Oscar for Dreamgirls. At least in those comedy clunkers, Murphy came to play. He made clear either through advanced prosthetics or through sheer force of personality that he could deliver a satisfying performance no matter the premise – or, better still: elevate hackneyed material. But in this straight-to-Prime Video snoozefest Murphy struggles to hide his age and boredom while looking for all the world like a hostage in his own heist flick.

It takes work to make Murphy entirely unfunny, and this film manages the job one-handed.

Meet Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson's Hapless Heisters in 'The Pickup' Sneak Peek [Exclusive]
Image
In just two days, comedy icons Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson are about to join forces for a heist they never asked for in The Pickup. The new action comedy casts the pair of Saturday Night Live alumni as mismatched armored truck drivers who, during what should have been a routine, if lengthy, job, are ambushed and forced into a high-risk scheme orchestrated by the criminal mastermind Zoe, played by Nope star Keke Palmer. Before their very bad day spins out of control on streaming, though, Collider is partnering with Prime Video to share an exclusive sneak peek introducing the three main characters and their clashing personalities. It serves as a behind-the-scenes preview of how the chaotic film from director Tim Story came together.

After a brief scene showcasing the odd-couple at the center of The Pickup, Murphy teases his character, Russell, the no-nonsense married man who's about to have...

‘The Pickup’ Review: Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson’s Lively Chemistry Helps Steady Amazon’s Bumpy Heist Comedy
Image
You wouldn’t want to be caught in an emergency situation with Travis (Pete Davidson), one of the main characters in Prime Video’s bumpy heist comedy The Pickup. The dopey armor truck guard is the kind of guy that panics under pressure. At the start of the Tim Story-directed feature, Travis pulls a gun on a customer at the bank, thinking the woman is trying to rob him. But Zoe (Keke Palmer), relaxed and charming, just wants to give him her number.

Russ (Eddie Murphy) intuits this about Travis, so when the two are paired up for a work shift, the veteran armor truck driver is more than annoyed. It’s his anniversary, and he just wants to finish in time so he can meet his wife (Eva Longoria) for dinner, but their bad-tempered manager (Andrew Dice Clay) has given the unlikely duo a particularly tricky route. But...

‘The Pickup’ Review: Eddie Murphy And Pete Davidson In A Pairing Long On Action And Short On Comedy
Image
In 1982’s hit action comedy 48 Hours, a young Eddie Murphy plays a wiseacre criminal on parole in order to help a veteran cop, played by Nick Nolte, solve a case. Murphy immediately shot to screen stardom in the role, garnering lots of laughs opposite Nolte’s straight-man partner. Forty-three years later the roles are reversed in Murphy’s latest — and least — streamer movie, The Pickup.

In this one it is basically pedal-to-the-medal action, high on octane and low on comedy at least from Murphy, who now is playing the straight man, an about-to-retire veteran armored truck driver who is paired with a bumbling wannabe cop as his cohort in delivering what starts out to be an ordinary pickup of cash when they are suddenly hijacked. Pete Davidson takes on that role and is responsible for whatever attempts at laughs there are in this thing. Davidson seems to be channeling a new-age Jerry Lewis here,...

Eddie Murphy confirms he’s playing Inspector Clouseau in the upcoming Pink Panther movie
Eddie Murphy at an event for Good Luck Chuck (2007)
A couple of years ago, we reported on Eddie Murphy engaging in negotiations to star in a new continuity of Pink Panther films. The original movie starred Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau as he tracks down a notorious jewel thief known as “The Phantom” before he is able to steal a priceless diamond known as “The Pink Panther”. The opening credits included the cartoon panther that audiences have come to associate with the franchise, and sources said that this new project will attempt to meld both worlds. The live-action/CG hybrid movie is said to see “the Pink Panther’s live-action crew break him out of his animated prison to do a heist job.“

Since the news broke, Murphy has starred in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and soon, he will be starring in Amazon MGM’s The Pickup. Murphy recently spoke with NBC‘s Al Roker on Today in...

The Pickup on Prime Video is Amazon MGM Studio’s upcoming crime-comedy. Arriving on the streamer on August 6, 2025, the film brings to audiences a star-studded ensemble cast and a genre mashup that is equal parts fast-paced and laugh-out-loud funny. Directed by Tim Story, the movie is based on two armored truck drivers being ambushed by criminals planning a heist.

The buzz around the film is not solely because of the comic legends starring in it: a little bit can be attributed to the introduction of WWE megastar Roman Reigns into the cast lineup. The pro wrestler is set to have a role in the forthcoming action-comedy (via Amazon MGM Studios). With the film’s themes of hilarious banter and high-octane action, we cannot wait for what Reigns’s appearance has in store for The Pickup.

As for the plot of these three movies, they’re under wraps, but I’ll admit that I’m intrigued by what Lego has planned for these live-action projects. Jenkins will direct her project, which she also co-wrote with former DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns and will produce through her Wicious Pictures banner. As for Kasdan, he will direct from a script by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul based on an original idea and a previous draft by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows. He will also produce with Melvin Mar...

Three Live-Action Lego Movies Confirmed With Jumanji, Wonder Woman & Attack The Block Directors Attached

An exciting slate of directors has signed on to helm three new Lego movies. The cinematic Lego-verse underwent an unwanted hiatus for several years after 2019's whimsical The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. 2024 did see another animated Lego movie, but in an unusual form: Piece by Piece, a biopic-style film about music extraordinaire Pharrell Williams. The Lego Movie and its sequel and companion films have been among the most well-liked animated films of this generation, leaving audiences wanting more Lego content.

Lego fans' fears can soon be assuaged as Deadline announces the production on three new Lego-based films. Yet untitled, these films are said to be shot in live-action.
