Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Dogtooth’ 4K Restoration Releases in Theaters This Month
Image
Director Yorgos Lanthimos‘ breakthrough feature, the unsettling 2009 domestic psychological thriller Dogtooth, is clawing its way back into theaters this month with a 4K restoration, Indiewire has announced today.

Kino Lorber will release the 4K restoration of Dogtooth in NYC at IFC Center on June 20 before rolling out to select cities nationwide.

In Dogtooth, “A controlling, manipulative father (Christos Stergioglou) locks his three adult offspring in a state of perpetual childhood by keeping them prisoner within the sprawling family compound. The children are bored to tears in spite of distractions like Christina (Anna Kalaitzidou), an employee of their father’s who makes regular visits to sexually service the son (Hristos Passalis). Increasingly curious about the outside world, the older daughter (Aggeliki Papoulia) hatches a plan to escape.”

Lanthimos co-wrote the film with frequent collaborator Efthymis Filippou (The Killing of a Sacred Deer).

Graphic artist Vasilis Marmatakis, Lanthimos’ other long-time collaborator, created...

Kinds Of Kindness Ending Explained: What Is Rmf?
Image
Nobody makes movies quite like Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, and his 2024 dark comedy anthology film "Kinds of Kindness" is something like "The Twilight Zone" for perverts and sickos (in the most complimentary way). Emma Stone leads a cast of talented actors who each appear in a triptych of tales, playing different roles in each story, and the somewhat nihilistic fable is the most "Lanthimos" movie Lanthimos has ever made.

Some fans were disappointed in "Kinds of Kindness" after the Academy Award-winning psychosexual delights of Stone and Lanthimos's previous collaboration, "Poor Things," which featured a script by "The Great" creator Tony McNamara, but "Kinds of Kindness" is a fascinating piece of work nonetheless. Lanthimos co-wrote "Kinds of Kindness" with his frequent collaborator Efthymis Filippou, who also wrote the director's films "Alps," "Dogtooth," "The Lobster," and "The Killing of a Sacred Deer," and it's a return to many of his unusual trademarks.

The Killing Of A Sacred Deer Ending Explained: An Impossible Choice
Image
The films of Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos aren't for everyone. They're aggressively uncomfortable, poking and prodding the audience with all manner of shocking content and even more shocking ways of presenting it, but there is a lot to love in his deliciously disturbing filmography. Whether he's working from a screenplay he developed with frequent collaborator Efthimis Filippou or one written by "The Great" creator Tony McNamara, Lanthimos manages to inject his films with his unique vision, using characters that seem totally inhuman to force the audience to contemplate their own humanity. This can lead to his films being a little confusing, and that includes his 2017 thriller "The Killing of a Sacred Deer."

"The Killing of a Sacred Deer" stars Colin Farrell as heart surgeon Steven Murphy, who develops a bizarre relationship with 16-year-old Martin Lang (Barry Keoghan), whose father died on Steven's operating table. Martin begins to insert himself into the Murphy family,...

10 Best Thrillers Of The 2010s
Image
Thriller movies elicit mistrust, and the thrillers of the 2010s were some of the best ever to twist and distort audience expectations. The subject of suspicion is the source of experimentation for directors as they make thriller movies that mess with the head. Sometimes, the source of mistrust is simply the lack of certainty about a character's survival, but often, it goes deeper than that, especially with the unreliable narrator who introduces a mistrust in the film itself. A thriller has succeeded when its audience doesn't know what to expect next and whose perspective to rely on as they try to figure out what's going on.

Every decade of cinema is chock-full of unique thrillers. In hindsight, the 1980s had many overlooked thrillers, like every era. The thrillers made in a certain period of time can often reflect the collective anxieties of people in that time. But whatever the themes they explore,...

Image
“Cops and women don’t mix?” It seems they do, as Pamela Anderson is readying for “The Naked Gun” with Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., produced by Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins.

“Liam is hysterical in it,” she said at Zurich Film Festival.

“I just finished it. I am also doing ‘Rosebush Pruning’ with Karim Aїnouz in Barcelona. We rehearsed every single scene and we did a lot of improvisation in character – we even had family dinners in character. Karim is unbelievable,” she said about the buzzy next project, an ensemble drama featuring Elle Fanning, Callum Turner, Riley Keough and Jamie Bell.

Aïnouz is behind “Firebrand,” while Efthimis Filippou (“Kinds of Kindness”) wrote the script.

Anderson, in town to present Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl” and receive Zurich’s Golden Eye Award – as well as talk up upcoming cookbook “I Love You: Recipes From the Heart” – opened up...

‘Rosebush Pruning’: Karim Aïnouz’s Dark Satire With Elle Fanning Adds Callum Turner, Riley Keough, Jamie Bell & More
Image
How’s this for an epic cast list? Karim Aïnouz‘s “Rosebush Pruning” had enough hype surrounding it already: Elle Fanning as the star; Efthimis Filippou penning a script that adapts the 1965 classic “Fists In The Pocket“; Mubi, The Match Factory, and Fremantle‘s The Apartment footing the bill. But the ensemble Aïnouz cast around Fanning now makes his follow-up to “Motel Destino” one of next year’s most anticipated films.

Crossing (Levan Akin)

There’s no description of Levan Akin’s Crossing that won’t make it sound like the kind of feel-good dramedy which would have taken Sundance by storm in 2006. It has all the key ingredients: an inter-generational friendship forged between a curmudgeonly retired teacher and a young burnout desperate to escape his hometown; an epic road trip where they come to understand each other more; and the older of the two confronting her internal bigotry as they search for her transgender niece. Above all, any description makes this sound like the worst kind of LGBTQ story, which we finally seem to have moved past as a culture––the story of queer people aimed firmly at a straight audience. It...

Emma Stone's Wild Follow-Up To Her Oscar Win Is Now Streaming & She Plays 3 Characters
Image
Emma Stone didnt take any breaks after her second Oscar, and her follow-up project, Kinds of Kindness, is now streaming and she plays three different characters in it. Emma Stones acting career began on TV in the early 2000s, and she made her big screen debut in the 2007 comedy Superbad. Stone built a career in comedy with movies like The House Bunny and Zombieland, and her big break arrived in 2010 with the comedy Easy A. Stone continued playing comedic roles after that, and her first drama role arrived in 2011 with The Help.

Since then, Stone has mixed her comedy roles with performances in projects from other genres, such as superheroes with both The Amazing Spider-Man movies, action with Gangster Squad, and musicals with La La Land. The latter gave Stone her first Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 2024, she won her second Oscar in the same category for Poor Things,...

‘Kinds Of Kindness’ Ending Explained & Movie Summary: What Happens In The Mid-Credits Scene?
Image
Knowing I do what I do, you can imagine the kind of bizarre stuff I’d run into in films and shows. Some are a challenge, while some, like Lanthimos’ Poor Things, are an absolute joy to dive into despite their absurdist motifs concealing an undercurrent of simultaneously hopeful and morbid themes. But there’s another, rarer category of eccentric films that keep the audience at arm’s length, revealing its inner workings ever so slightly before washing any contemplation over with something distractingly weird. That’s the category of absurdist cinema I’d say Kinds of Kindness falls in. Lanthimos’s triptych anthology, which he co-wrote with Efthimis Filippou, is of a mood that has a distinct connection with the one character that is recurring in all three stories. But a due reminder before I jump in, Kinds of Kindness is more about the experience, almost like a performance...

Cannes Competition titles The Substance, The Seed Of The Sacred Fig, and Emilia Perez are among the first set of titles recommended for nominations at this year’s European Film Awards.

Overall, 29 titles have been selected for the first stage of nominations by the European Film Academy Board. The selection includes films from 26 countries. In the coming weeks, the 5,000 members of the European Film Academy will start to vote on the selected films. The winners will be announced at the European Film Awards ceremony in Lucerne, Switzerland, on December 7.

How To Watch Kinds Of Kindness At Home
Image
If ever there were a movie to define Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos' particular approach to movies, "Kinds of Kindness" would be the most direct and unapologetic of them all. Not many film aficionados would've imagined that this writer/director would end up achieving mainstream success on the level of "Poor Things," which turned into a box office hit and ended up outperforming expectations at the Academy Awards, to boot. Between that and "The Favourite" in 2018, the typically off-putting and idiosyncratic Lanthimos suddenly found himself at risk of being known as a name-brand artist among general audiences. At least, that was the case before he followed that up with "Kinds of Kindness" in June of this year, which might as well have felt like a middle finger directed straight at his newfound popularity. Look no further than the synopsis, after all:

"Kinds of Kindness" is a triptych fable following a man...

Screw Your Backstory: Yorgos Lanthimos Wants His Actors and Audience Present
Image
In director Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness” there are, as fans of the director would expect, scenarios that push beyond rational explanations. For example in “The Death of R.M.F,” the first story in the “Kindness” triptych, the viewer doesn’t know how or why a seemingly benevolent boss (Willem Dafoe) has so much power over Robert (Jesse Plemons), who willingly submits to his employer’s bizarre requests of making love to his wife (Hong Chau) at precise times a day, secretly poisoning her drink so she never gets pregnant (she is led to believe she is infertile), and agreeing to drive his car into another vehicle at the risk of severe injury. There is a touch of the surreal, and even a pinch of the supernatural in two of the stories that follow, but more than anything Lanthimos is able to drop the viewer into the middle of...

Film Review: Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Kinds of Kindness’ Distinctly Unsettling
Image
Chicago – Distinctive visions are in such short supply in Hollywood these days I suppose we should be grateful when one makes it onto our movie screens. Director Yorgos Lanthimos is nothing if not distinctive, but his films are by no means easy to watch. His latest film “Kinds Of Kindness” consists of three short stories of power and cruelty.

Each tale centers on a person in desperate need of direction falling to prey to insidious manipulation that hollows them out leaving them an empty husk without a sense of self.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

Lanthimos reunites with his muse Emma Stone, along with Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau and Mamoudou Athie, as they act as a sort of repertory company taking different roles in three different stories. There are funny moments yes, but I think it’s a big stretch to call this a comedy in any way. It’s...

Movie Review: Kinds of Kindness
Image
Following their critical and commercially successful collaboration that resulted in 2023’s Poor Things, filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and actor Emma Stone have now embarked on the triptych fable entitled Kinds of Kindness. Though it has its share of shining moments and thought-provoking sequences, the new film is ultimately a letdown after the triumph of the pair’s previous endeavor.

The trio of tales found within Kinds of Kindness are centered around: 1) a man desperately trying to regain control of his life; 2) a police officer whose wife has mysteriously returned after being lost at sea and now appears to be a completely different person; and, 3) a woman searching for the messiah foretold by the religious group she is a part of.

Throughout these three tales, Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, and Willem Dafoe assume and inhabit multiple roles (as do many other actors within the film): some overlap, and some continue from story to story.

‘Kinds of Kindness’ Composer Jerskin Fendrix Delivered Four Hours of Unsettling Piano and Choir Music for Yorgos Lanthimos
Image
Just as he did for Yorgos Lanthimos‘ “Poor Things,” English composer Jerskin Fendrix has supplied an offbeat, musically provocative score for Lanthimos’ new film, “Kinds of Kindness” — except this time it’s all piano and choir instead of the strange, electronically processed sonorities of “Poor Things.”

“Kinds of Kindness” was even more challenging, Fendrix tells Variety. Instead of a science-fiction drama about a reanimated corpse with a child’s brain, this was a trio of weird, decidedly absurdist tales featuring the same cast with only the most tenuous of connections between them.

The assignment came at the end of 2022, while he was still doing final recordings and mixes for “Poor Things.” He was invited to visit the New Orleans set, do a cameo in one segment, then return to England armed with just a casual suggestion from the director: “Maybe just piano and choir.”

But finding a way into the story was difficult.

Kinds Of Kindness
Image
With Kinds Of Kindness, his ninth feature film, Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos reinforces his formidable reputation as one of the great directors of contemporary world cinema. This triptych piece — studded with the characteristically oddball humour, violent shocks and sexual preoccupation of Lanthimos’ best work —is his version of going back to basics. His third consecutive collaboration with Emma Stone is perhaps the most stripped-down of the trio, unadorned by the ornate period trappings of The Favourite and the intricate, Victorian-steampunk production design of Alasdair Gray adaptation Poor Things. It’s shot and set in modern New Orleans, but far from the instantly recognisable Creole architecture of the French Quarter: seemingly prosaic offices, roads and suburban homes are the core locations. As ever with Lanthimos, though, the action is rarely run-of-the-mill.

We open with Jesse Plemons as corporate lackey Robert, meticulously controlled by all-knowing boss Raymond (Willem Dafoe). Having failed to...

Emma Stone Thinks Yorgos Lanthimos Is ‘Still Miserable’ Despite Success
Image
After having collaborated with Yorgos Lanthimos now on three feature films, one short, and an upcoming project shot in his native Greece, Emma Stone feels she has a pretty good handle on the comically bleak filmmaker. Tapping into new depths of Stone’s bubbly and free-spirited persona, Lanthimos has helped shape a new act in her career that recently earned her a second Oscar for Best Actress with “Poor Things.” Though clearly endeared to his brand of weird, uncomfortable humor, Stone also acknowledged recently in a piece for GQ that his desire to understand the power people hold over one another seems to be a throughline for her in his work.

“I think the elements of control are in every thing he’s ever done,” Stone said. “That’s I think an obsession of his and something very interesting to him—human nature and the kinds of agreements we make...

Kinds of Kindness Cast Guide - Who Is Starring Alongside Emma Stone?
Image
The award-winning team of Poor Things has returned with their much-awaited Kinds of Kindness a twisted, absurdist anthology film that fans have been long waiting for. Yorgos Lanthimos once again helms the project as the director and reunites with Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, and Margaret Qualley, and ropes in new and equally brilliant cast members like Jesse Plemons, Mamoudou Athie, and Hong Chau. Co-written by Lanthimos and his frequent collaborator, Efthymis Filippou, Kinds of Kindness is an anthology of three different stories but interconnected by theme. Billed as a dark comedy, the surrealist film explores significant themes of power, control, free will, and the dynamics of human relationships.

‘Dogtooth’: The Absurdist Family Drama and Blueprint of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Career
Image
“It didn’t really start as a story about family dysfunction and such. In the beginning, I was wondering about family life and parenting in general and if the way we think about it would ever really change.”

In an interview with Pamela Jahn of Electric Sheep Magazine, Yorgos Lanthimos muses on his initial thought process behind the creation of his acclaimed 2009 absurdist family drama Dogtooth. In the above quote, the director who would come to be known to English-speaking audiences through hilariously nightmarish features like The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Poor Things, and the upcoming Kinds of Kindness explains how the idea of Dogtooth slowly began to form after a conversation with some soon-to-be-newlywed friends.

In the wake of their union, Lanthimos would make some slight and friendly jabs at their decision to marry and start a family despite the high chances of divorce. A joke on his part,...

Yorgos Lanthimos Says He’s Not Trying to Make Audiences Uncomfortable with ‘Kinds of Kindness’
Image
Who is “Kinds of Kindness,” the brain-bending new film from director Yorgos Lanthimos, for? While it may not be for those swept up by the queenly regalia of “The Favourite” or the dystopic steampunk Victorianism of “Poor Things,” remember that those films made audiences uncomfortable, too: With a wickedly perverse sense of humor that often erupts in violence. (First reactions at Cannes called it a “dark” and “twisted” return to Lanthimos’ early form.)

That’s the modus operandi of “Kinds of Kindness,” which stars Jesse Plemons, Emma Stone, and Willem Dafoe, and tells three tales of subsumed identity, cultlike bewitchment, and fleshly appetites, kinky sex, and all the gamut of self-aware Lanthimos weirdness. Here, he’s not working with screenwriter Tony McNamara. Instead, the Oscar-nominated Greek director is back behind the camera with Efthimis Filippou, his dear friend and beloved co-writer of films including the breakout “Dogtooth” (about three adult...

“Kinds of Kindness”: A Triptych Fable of Unsettling Transformations
Yorgos Lanthimos
Welcome to a world where transformation is the only constant. Yorgos Lanthimos, the genius behind cinematic classics, brings you “Kinds of Kindness”, set to premiere in cinemas this Friday.

From the intriguing minds of screenwriters Efthymis Filippou and Lanthimos himself, comes a fable crafted into a distinctive form – a triptych. Three interwoven narratives unravel tales of personal struggle, spectral deception, and the relentless pursuit of a prodigious spiritual leader.

A star-studded ensemble, featuring Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie, and Joe Alwyn, brings to life these stories set in surreal landscapes.

Each tale portends a transformation: a man entrapped, striving to regain command of his life; a policeman haunted by the spectral return of his wife, who vanished at sea and now bears an unrecognizable semblance; and a woman on a determined quest to find an individual with a rare gift, who is foreseen...

‘Kinds of Kindness’ Cast Guide: Who Plays Who?
Image
Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest film Kinds of Kindness debuted at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival following Oscars buzz for the director’s film Poor Things. The filmmaker’s last project to premiere at the French festival was The Killing of a Sacred Deer starring Nicole Kidman, Barry G. Bernson, Herb Caillouet, Bill Camp, Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan, Alicia Silverstone and more. Kinds of Kindness marks reunions with Emma Stone, Joe Alwyn, Margaret Qualley and Willem Dafoe for the director. This will be Stone’s third film with Lanthimos, and her second Lanthimos film co-starring with Joe Alwyn after 2018’s The Favourite.

The anthology movie is described as a “triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability,...

Review: ‘Kinds of Kindness’ Shines a Floodlamp on Yorgos Lanthimos’s Worst Tendencies
Image
Shot while in post-production on Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos’s Kinds of Kindness shares with its predecessor a preoccupation with the struggle to achieve autonomy in a bounded world. While the film does mark a return to the austere aesthetics of earlier Lanthimos films like Dogtooth and The Lobster, the more operative change that supersedes and to a degree governs that aesthetic recourse is the swapping out of Tony McNamara, the writer of Poor Things and co-writer of The Favourite, for Efthimis Filippou, who collaborated with Lanthimos on the scripts for The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Lobster, Alps, and Dogtooth.

Readers familiar with Lanthimos’s work will easily recognize the stark tonal divide between these groups of films. The sadism with which Lanthimos treated his early characters, the cynicism with which he characterized their capacity to change, and the nihilism redolent in his view of the world which...

‘Kinds of Kindness’ Review
Image
Stars: Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, Hunter Schafer | Written by Yorgos Lanthimos, Efthimis Filippou | Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos

Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos reteams with stars Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley for this bizarre triptych of stories that are simultaneously surreal, disturbing and darkly funny. Co-written by Efthimis Filippou, who previously collaborated with Lanthimos on Dogtooth, The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, the film marks a thrilling return to the director’s signature strangeness and the unsettling sensibilities of the Greek Weird Wave.

Set in present-day New Orleans, Kinds of Kindness tells three separate stories, with each cast member playing three different characters. The stories are nominally linked by a character named in their titles, though there is very little narrative overlap, only repeated echoes of themes, lines and images.

In the first story, “The Death of R.

14 Films to See in June
Image
The summer movie season continues with a handful of festival highlights coming to theaters, including Cannes premieres both from this and last year, alongside family dramas, vampire flicks, and one of the boldest experimental offerings of the year. We should also mention Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, which was on last month’s list for its all-too-limited theatrical release, will hit its final resting place on Netflix beginning June 7.

14. The Devil’s Bath (Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala; June 28 on Shudder)

Goodnight Mommy directors Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala are back with another harrowing tale, but this time hewing closer to real life than providing a genre twist. Savina Petkova said in her review, “Early Modern times were messy: Europe was finding its footing in rationalism, seeking independence from the centuries-long spiritual yoke of Catholicism and Protestantism. Shedding the skin of the past seems, at least from our standpoint today, the...

Kinds Of Kindness Trailer Sees Director Yorgos Lanthimos Getting Weird And Erotic Again
Image
Just a few months after his eccentric alt-history sci-fi movie "Poor Things" swept the Oscars with four wins (including a Best Actress award for lead Emma Stone), director Yorgos Lanthimos is back with a new film. "Kinds of Kindness" once again stars Stone, alongside her fellow "Poor Things" performers Margaret Qualley and Willem Dafoe. And the talent doesn't stop there, with Jesse Plemons ("Breaking Bad"), Hong Chau ("The Whale"), Joe Alwyn ("The Favourite"), Mamoudou Athie ("Archive 81"), and Hunter Schafer ("Euphoria") also in the mix.

Lanthimos will really be getting the most out of that stellar cast by having each actor in three different roles. "We had started out with one story, but as we were working on it, we thought that it might be interesting to make a film that has a different structure to what we had done before," Lanthimos explains in the press notes, referring to himself and...

Jesse Plemons Warns of Danger in New Trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness
Image
With Cannes Film Festival wrapped up, one of the first premieres to arrive in theaters is Yorgos Lanthimos’ triptych Kinds of Kindness. Starring Cannes Best Actor winner Jesse Plemons, alongside Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer, Searchlight Pictures has now dropped a new trailer ahead of the June 21 release.

Here’s the synopsis: “Kinds Of Kindness is a triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.”

Luke Hicks said in his review, “This one is for the true Lanthimites, the Dogtooth sisters, the biscuit women, The Killing of a Sacred Deer heads, a...

The Best Movies of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, According to 55 Critics
Image
In our critics survey of the best movies at the Cannes Film Festival each year, it’s common to have the critics IndieWire’s polled disagree with the awards given by the festival jury itself. That is not the case for Cannes 2024. The best movies of the festival, picked by 55 critics, representing five continents, were topped by Sean Baker’s “Anora” in our poll, which, of course also won the Palme d’Or.

Last year, Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” topped our poll, differing from the Palme d’Or result, which went to Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall.” It must be said that voter enthusiasm in our poll for “The Zone of Interest” was even that much stronger: It received nearly half of all votes for best film. “Anora,” which stars Mikey Madison, received about a quarter of the overall votes for best film this time...

Yorgos Lanthimos on the Caligula-Inspired Kinds of Kindness and Finding Hope in Humanity
Image
Oh, to be one of the chosen. I guarantee this thought washes over every single person attending the Cannes Film Festival, at least at some point. It is a realization laden with ambivalence, as both an exclamation and a lament; it’s the characters in Yorgos Lanthimos’ newest feature, Kinds of Kindness, that have to grapple with a very similar in-between. What validates you can also annihilate you; no surprises here in this conclusion, since the ensnarement of human power dynamics has long fascinated the Greek writer-director. Fittingly, for his 2024 Competition entry, he has teamed up with regular collaborator Efthimis Filippou––their duet on The Lobster won them an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay––to deliver a rapturous thought experiment in three parts. Kinds of Kindness is an anthology-of-sorts, with three distinct stories that are taking place in the same fictional world in a rather nondescript American setting (New Orleans...

Emma Stone Calls Her Dance Scene in Kinds of Kindness 'Just Fun'
Image
Emma Stone reunites with Yorgos Lanthimos in Kinds of Kindness less than a year after she won the Best Actress Oscar for their film, Poor Things. Footage of Stone dancing in a brown suit quickly became viral and turned into a meme. After the Cannes premiere, she explained that the dance scene was welcome fun, considering the heavy themes of the film. Stone acknowledges co-star Jesse Plemons as the true lead of the film, and praises the ensemble cast and writer Efthymis Filippou.

Poor Things star Emma Stone reunites with director Yorgos Lanthimos for their new absurdist black comedy Kinds of Kindness, which hits theaters on June 21, 2024. While the film has been getting a lot of buzz since its Cannes premiere on May 17, theres one scene in particular that has provided the internet with some new meme material: Emma Stone dancing. While seeing the 35-year-old two-time Academy Award-winner strut her...

Kinds Of Kindness Review: Yorgos Lanthimos Bizarre Anthology Drama Challenges Us To Flee Desperation
Image
Exceptional performances from Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, and Emma Stone elevate the dark themes of longing and obsession. Yorgos Lanthimos divides the film into 3 segments to allow viewers to fully absorb the disturbing content. Despite its length, Kinds of Kindness offers a unique and uncomfortable look at the pursuit of love and acceptance.

Yorgos Lanthimos Kinds of Kindness is a melting pot of anthology narratives that callously spotlight our desperation for affection and acceptance. Even from the films opening song, Eurythmics Sweet Dreams, prepares us for vivid and portentous examples of psychological ruin all in the name of emotional and sexual dependence masking themselves as love. For his latest feature, Lanthimos reunites with longtime screenwriting partner, The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer co-writer Efthimis Filippou, to deliver a dark representation of the pursuit of kindness to win the affections of others.

7/10 ProsExceptional performances from Plemons, Dafoe, and...

At Cannes, Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons Talk Dominance and Control in the Kinky ‘Kinds of Kindness’
Image
Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are hungry, wolfing down sandwiches at the start of our “Kinds of Kindness” interview. They’re in Cannes to promote the singular three-part anthology film, which has been well-received. They laugh a lot. She’s a Yorgos Lanthimos veteran, and just won her second Oscar embodying the free-spirited Bella Baxter in “Poor Things.” After that, it seems, nothing will faze her and she’ll do anything for her soulmate director. Announced at Cannes: Their next movie to be shot this summer, “Bugonia” (Focus Features), a remake of a Korean thriller, co-starring Plemons.

The 36-year-old one-time child actor is the new kid in town, joining such familiar faces as Stone, Margaret Qualley, and Willem Dafoe in the Lanthimos ensemble. When the “Fargo” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” star got the call from his agent, even before he read the “Kinds of Kindness” script, he said,...

Cannes Review: Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness is an Anthology Film of Dark if Slight Delights
Image
This one is for the true Lanthimites, the Dogtooth sisters, the biscuit women, The Killing of a Sacred Deer heads, a film to which the callbacks are so abundant that one can’t help but wonder what the connection is for writer-director Yorgos Lanthimos and co-screenwriter Efthimis Filippou behind the scenes, outside of simply sharing tones and themes that all of their other films share. Regardless, the director as we knew him pre-Emma Stone is back (relatively speaking). And this time… with Emma Stone!

In his eighth feature, old and new Lanthimos merge, the former reflected in story scope, unreal realism, and bone-dry Greek comedy, all wrapped up in the much-felt return of Filippou, with whom he last wrote Sacred Deer just before he launched into the Hollywood stratosphere with Tony McNamara and The Favourite, the dawn of his Emma Stone collaboration-turned-creative-partnership. And the latter is reflected in, well,...

Cannes Best Actor Winner Jesse Plemons Unpacks ‘Kinds of Kindness’
Image
Jesse Plemons has become an undisputed auteur’s favorite. The 36-year-old star’s beguiling unshowiness onscreen has landed him memorable parts in films from Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master), Steven Spielberg (Bridge of Spies, The Post), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman, Killers of the Flower Moon), Charlie Kaufman (I’m Thinking of Ending Things), Adam McKay (Vice) and Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog), among so many others. Arguably even more viewers know him from his indelible work on the small screen, which began with his breakthrough role on NBC’s Friday Night Lights, continued through AMC’s landmark hit series Breaking Bad and culminated with an Emmy nomination for FX’s Fargo, where he met his wife, actress and co-star Kirsten Dunst.

Plemons touched down for the Cannes Film Festival on Friday for the world premiere of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness, the acclaimed Greek director’s follow-up to his multi-Oscar-winning period fantasy Poor Things.
