Epix's new psychological thriller, The Visitor, has just received an official trailer from Paramount Movies. The Visitor will follow a man whose life descends into chaos after he finds an old portrait of his doppelganger in his wife's childhood home. The film is directed by Justin P. Lange from a script by Adam Mason & Simon Boyes. The Visitor stars Finn Jones (Iron Fist), Jessica McNamee (The Meg), Dane Rhodes (The Magnificent Seven), and Donna Biscoe (The Fundamentals of Caring).

The latest collaboration between Blumhouse and Epix is the horror film The Visitor, which will be available on Digital and VOD as of October 7th before reaching Epix in December. Released by Vertical Entertainment on March 26 in select theaters and on digital platforms, the movie stars Guy Pearce, Vadhir Derbez and Stephen Lang, and scared up an estimated three-day gross of $67K on the specialty box office front.

Meanwhile, the Eddie Izzard and Judy Dench World War II-set thriller Six Minutes to Midnight opened in 145 theaters across the country for an estimated opening weekend gross of $56K. We have a brand new trailer for The Seventh Day, the upcoming supernatural horror/thriller is coming to us from the folks at Vertical Entertainment and Redbox Entertainment. Its stars Guy Pearce, who viewers may know from movies like Memento and Iron Man 3. In this case, he is playing an exorcist who is training a rookie during his first day on the job. Yes, it does sound an awful lot like Training Day, set within the world of exorcisms.

Exclusive: Cast has been rounded out on The Seventh Day, the horror pic starring Guy Pearce and Mexican actor Vadhir Derbez in the story of a renowned exorcist who teams up with a rookie priest for his first day of training.

Joining them are Stephen Lang (Avatar), Keith David (The Thing), Chris Galust (Give Me Liberty), Robin Bartlett (City Of Angels), and Brady Jenness (The Sinner).

Lang will co-star as serious and deeply pious archbishop of the Catholic Diocese of New Orleans. David will portray Father Louis, a mentor to Father Peter (Pearce) in his youth. Bartlett is set to portray Helen, a New Orleans social worker. Galust will play young Father Peter, and Jenness will portray Charlie Giroux, a young boy accused of a heinous crime while allegedly under the influence of demonic possession.

How did you get involved with The Dark? What did you think about the story and your character when you first read the script?

Toby Nichols: I got the audition to play Alex from my agent and I was fairly excited to play such a complex character. The day of the callback I was really sick and my mom had me under a sheet getting steamed all morning so that I would be able to talk when Justin and Nadia called me on Skype.

In our strange and mysterious exclusive clip from The Dark, two young people are walking in the woods when something causes them to stop, suddenly, and look around. Are they about to be eaten by a monster? Our own J. Hurtado began his positive review of the film thusly: "There is a monster inside of all of us. A monster made out of pain, frustration, and fear. A monster fed by neglect, trauma, and anger that rears its ugly head when we get tired of fighting." San Sebastian — Smart genre, zombies and throwbacks to the ’70s and ‘80s are some of the current trends in genre cinema, according to some specialists in the field. It’s a cyclical dynamic now offering meaningful box office hits such as Corin Hardy’s “The Nun” or Ari Aster’s “Hereditary.” Genre cinema always attracts the attention of industry players. These are some of them.

An auteur-driven trend commands greatest consensus among experts. Matteo Lovadina, CEO of Paris-based sales and co-production company Reel Suspects, observed that some great examples recently of genre film have, “thanks to their clever storytelling,” been able to attract both auteur and genre audiences.

Signature Entertainment has unveiled the official trailer for a horror film titled The Dark, from Austria, an English-language feature that just play at FrightFest in the UK. The film has quite a unique premise: an undead teenage girl befriends a blind boy that she meets in a forest she haunts and hunts in. Both have been victims of unimaginable abuse, and each finds solace in the other. The horror is described as "transfixing, unnerving masterpiece" and a "haunting and deeply intense atmospheric film about love, monsters and revenge that is being compared to the spine-chilling Let The Right One In." This stars Nadia Alexander as Mina, Toby Nichols, Karl Markovics, Margarete Tiesel, and Dylan Trowbridge. Just before Halloween, The Dark will show in several theatres, in North America. The Dark was shot in northern Ontario. And, the film involves a tale of abuse as two children find redemption together. This indie horror film is based on a successful short film. Director Justin P. Lange says of his short film: "my thesis film was my first real foray into genre filmmaking, so it was very much a trial-and-error process for me (Screen Words)." Nate Estabrooks’ Aztec Honeymoon from Canada and Robert San Sebastian’s Bedtime from Spain will be among the projects at the 10th Frontieres co-production market when the Fantasia International Film Festival runs in Montreal from July 19-22.

Half of the features in the line-up are directed by women and this year marks Frontieres’ first project from Ukraine. The complete roster will be announced in June.

Until 15 years ago or so, zombie cinema was still a fairly narrow subgenre. These days, however, it seems to be one size that fits all — or at least is stretched to fit every other genre, from comedy to romance to globe-trotting action, with the occasional traditional gorefest thrown in for old time’s sake.

Whether it’s really well suited to a drama about child abuse is something viewers of “The Dark” will have to decide for themselves, though perhaps the better questions are: Did we even need to find out? Aren’t there (many) better ways of approaching such a difficult theme than via a shotgun marriage with horror conventions? On its own terms, writer-director Justin P. Lange’s debut feature (with Dp Klemens Hufnagl credited as co-director) is well-crafted and well-acted.
