‘The Chosen’ Clings to Top Streaming Spot as Fans Flock to 100% Rotten Tomatoes ‘Bosch’ Spin-Off
Image
All episodes of The Chosen Season 5 are now streaming on Prime Video, but the show has experienced a slight fall from grace thanks to the arrival of new competition. Dallas Jenkins’ hit religious series is currently holding on to the #10 spot on Prime Video streaming charts in America, but it was, at one point, hanging onto the top spot. It has since been dethroned at #1 by Ballard, the Bosch: Legacy spin-off show that has earned a perfect 100% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes thus far. The latest season of The Summer I Turned Pretty is also a newcomer to the Prime Video top 10, and despite premiering several weeks ago, John Cena and Idris Elba’s new action movie, Heads of State, is also still topping streaming charts.

The Chosen Season 5 premiered in theaters earlier this year in three parts, and while returns were low compared to previous installments in the franchise,...

’The Chosen’ Season 6 Gets "Devastating" and "Beautiful" Update [Exclusive]
Image
There’s a lot on the line during The Chosen’s upcoming penultimate season. Right now, the cast and crew behind the Dallas Jenkins-created, directed, and co-penned series are working through the night (literally) to bring one of the most infamous stories from the Bible to life — the crucifixion. From what we’ve learned so far from Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus, it’s been a difficult journey filled with plenty of deep and varying emotions. Recently, we were lucky enough to chat with another member of the cast, Elizabeth Tabish, who shared some insight into the sixth season with us.

The actress has been part of the audience-favorite series since the very beginning, portraying one of Jesus’ closest companions — Mary Magdalene. During our back-and-forth with Tabish, we asked her if she could shed some light on what it’s been like to have been part of this particular passage...

“Profoundly Healing”: ‘The Chosen’ Star, 39, Reveals Which Scene Has Been Her Favorite So Far [Exclusive]
Image
During her five — soon-to-be six — seasons with The Chosen, series star, Elizabeth Tabish, has been able to dig deep. Her portrayal of Mary Magdalene has allowed the actress to tap into a wealth of emotion as she takes audiences by the hand and gently guides them along on her walk of faith. While the series features Jonathan Roumie’s Jesus as the story’s central figure, it ensures that audiences get plenty of time with his followers, as their backgrounds and journeys are also uniquely important to the tale as a whole. For Tabish, that means that she’s traversed multiple arcs as Mary Magdalene grows as not only a follower of Jesus but also as a human being.

We recently shared a question-and-answer session with Tabish over email, during which she was kind enough to open up about what part of her character she’s enjoyed exploring the most.

'The Chosen' Star, 39, Reveals Why She Thinks Audiences Are Drawn to Her Character [Exclusive]
Image
Elizabeth Tabish has been with The Chosen since the very beginning. Her character, Mary Magdalene, appeared in the first episode of the premiere season all the way back in 2019. The installment, titled “I Have Called You by Name,” saw the debut of most of the main players that audiences have followed over the show’s five-season run. In the case of Tabish’s character, she is introduced as a woman named Lilith struggling with demonic possession until Jonathan Roumie’s Jesus reaches out, calls her by her true name, and casts the entity from her body. Over her arc, audiences have fallen in love with Mary Magdalene and find themselves drawn to her while she walks her faith journey.

We recently had the chance to exchange questions with Tabish and were eager to find out why she thought she’d grown into a fan favorite. The actress expressed that, when it comes down to it,...

“It’s Stunning”: ‘The Chosen’ Star, 39, Shares Which Season 5 Scene Deserves a Rewatch [Exclusive]
Image
Season 5 of The Chosen may have come and gone, but that just means it’s time for a rewatch. After all, with such deep character and story growth over the last set of episodes, there’s plenty to be gained from a second time around. We recently chatted with series star Elizabeth Tabish — who plays Mary Magdalene in the series — and asked her about her favorite scene from the latest installment of the Dallas Jenkins-created series. Her answer not only gives credit to the two performers in the sequence but also reflects her high esteem for Jenkins and the rest of the team, who work tirelessly to ensure the final product is nothing but A+ material.

“There is a scene with Thaddeus and Jesus that I adore. The way it’s filmed and edited, the writing, the performances of Giavani Cairo and Jonathan Roumie. It’s stunning. Watching this gentle,...

‘The Chosen’s’ Jesus Actor Jonathan Roumie Meets Pope Leo Xiv at the Vatican
Image
“The Chosen” star Jonathan Roumie met briefly with Pope Leo Xiv on Wednesday during a general audience at the Vatican, where a Season 5 episode of the hit biblical series had streamed on Monday at the Holy See’s Filmoteca theater.

Roumie, who plays Jesus on “The Chosen,” and Elizabeth Tabish, George Xanthis, and Vanessa Benavente — who respectively play Mary Magdalene, St. John the Apostle and Mary, the Mother of God — as well as series creator and director Dallas Jenkins, are in Rome this week after wrapping three weeks of filming in the ancient southern Italian town of Matera. There, they shot the crucifixion scenes of “The Chosen” Season 6. Matera is the location where Mel Gibson famously shot “The Passion of the Christ.” Season 6 will focus entirely on the final 24 hours of Jesus’ life, culminating in the crucifixion.

“When [Pope Leo Xiv] was elected, I wept, because I never thought I’d see an American pope in my lifetime,...

‘The Chosen’ Falls From Grace on Streaming Charts Despite New Episodes
Image
New episodes of The Chosen arrived on Prime Video on Sunday, and although the show debuted its first batch of Season 5 episodes in one of the top spots, it hasn’t continued this trend with the second drop. The Chosen is now sitting at #6 on Prime Video at the time of writing, falling several spots despite the release of Episodes 3-5. This is the opposite of what most fans were expecting to happen, as it seemed likely that the show would continue to climb as more of Season 5 becomes available to watch. However, this may very well be a temporary setback, and it’s possible thatThe Chosen could climb even to the top spot before the end of the week. The final three episodes premiere this Sunday, June 29.

Starring in the lead role in The Chosen is Jonathan Roumie, who portrays Jesus of Nazareth. He’s joined by Elizabeth Tabish as Mary Magdalene,...

Between Borders Review: A Tender Portrayal of Hope Amidst Adversity
Image
“Between Borders” explores the profound narrative of the Petrosyan family, rooted in Azerbaijan’s complex landscape of cultural heritage and systemic oppression. The film reveals an intimate perspective of an Armenian family confronting ethnic conflicts and the devastating impact of forced relocation during the Soviet Union’s collapse.

The family’s traumatic exodus from their homeland unfolds through visceral performances by Elizabeth Tabish and Patrick Sabongui. Their portrayal captures the raw emotional experience of migrants navigating unfamiliar territories and confronting persistent discrimination.

Their arduous trek through Russia leads them to a dilapidated Volgograd apartment, where a local church provides momentary solace amid widespread uncertainty. The narrative reaches a critical point during their asylum trial in the United States, where idealistic notions of refuge clash with stringent immigration regulations.

The film’s strength lies in its nuanced exploration of human displacement, compelling viewers to contemplate the intricate human stories behind migration.

‘Between Borders’ Reviews: Middling Religious Refugee Drama Tracks the Case of an Armenian Family Searching for Home
Image
One of the most dehumanizing features — which is certainly a built-in component and not a bug — of the U.S. immigration system as it pertains to asylum seekers is that the applicant bears the burden of proving they have suffered enough or that they risk death in their home country in order to be granted permission to stay. The more horrifying the survived experiences, the better the chances for a positive outcome. But how does one precisely quantify someone’s distress or the likelihood that their safety will be threatened? These stipulations exist more to keep people from the developing world out than to offer them protection.

The Christian drama “Between Borders” uses a contentious asylum trial as a framing device to tackle the real-life case of the Petrosyan family, an ethnic Armenian couple and their two daughters, for whom Azerbaijan was the only home they’d ever known. Although...

‘The Shift’ Review
Image
Stars: Kristoffer Polaha, Elizabeth Tabish, Neal McDonough, Sean Astin, Rose Reid, John Billingsley, Paras Patel, Emily Rose, Nolan North | Written and Directed by Brock Heasley

Whilst I don’t typically cover faith-based films, I was intrigued by The Shift‘s ambitious premise. A Christian science fiction thriller from writer/director Brock Heasley, A film that combines the high-concept appeal of multiverse storytelling with faith-based themes is certainly a bold endeavour, and Heasley deserves credit for taking such a creative risk.

The story follows Kevin Garner, played by Kristoffer Polaha, a man thrust into a dystopian web of parallel universes while trying to reunite with his wife, Molly, portrayed by Elizabeth Tabish. Neal McDonough delivers a menacing performance as “The Benefactor,” a mysterious and sinister figure who seems to control Kevin’s fate. The film’s biblical inspiration, particularly the story of Job, is evident in Kevin’s relentless struggle to...

The Chosen Cast & Character Guide: Who Plays Who In The Biblical Show
Image
There may be a massive surplus of films and TV shows that tell the story of Jesus, but The Chosen has made history by being the first multi-season series about the prominent Christian figure. The show boasts an impressive cast of characters played by a number of talented actors, many of whom have had previous experience with other biblical-themed projects. The Chosen tells the story of Jesus of Nazareth, his life and works, and the people who knew him. While closely following biblical texts, the series isn’t afraid to take dramatic liberties without smearing the importance of its message.

The show premiered in 2017 and was instantly beloved by faith-based audiences, with The Chosen episodes even screening in movie theaters and raking in massive box office grosses. The Chosen season 5 is confirmed, and will center on Holy Week, the final days before Jesus' crucifixion. It's unknown how much of the Bible the show will cover,...

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever Review: This Stale Christmas Morality Tale Doesnt Take A Stance
Image
Based on the 1972 children's book of the same name by Barbara Robinson, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever lengthens the story but fails to dig deep while exploring its own true meaning of Christmas. Now that it's November, stores, companies, and the media will all be leaning head-first into the Christmas spirit, even if the event itself is still almost two months away. This is the cycle of Christmas cheer in film and television. Though it's being released right on schedule, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is trying to combat the commodification of Christmas, if only slightly.

‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’ Review: A Faith Based Family Holiday Comedy That Knows The True Meaning Of A Christmas Movie
Image
There is a reason certain Christmas movies stand the test of time and return year after year, and also a reason the Hallmark-style factory-made product is easily forgotten. It’s a Wonderful Life, White Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas and A Christmas Story are pure examples of the former. They are perennials, classics.

In fact, that sweetly nostalgic 1983 A Christmas Story is what I thought of most when watching the latest entry in the genre, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, which may not be the best Christmas movie ever, but it grabs your heart and makes you smile. It also is that increasingly rare so-called “faith based” film that doesn’t try to hit you on the head with a sermon. Instead, it manages to be thoroughly entertaining family fare that also uncovers the true, not commercial, meaning of the holiday. I wouldn’t be surprised if this Lionsgate release becomes a perennial itself.
