Kate Hudson helms Running Point, the latest show from Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen as Isla Gordon, an underdog of sorts. She’s the only daughter of Jack Gordon, who had several other sons including Cam (Justin Theroux), Ness (Scott MacArthur) and their half brother Sandy (Drew Tarver).
Isla and her best friend Ali Lee (Brenda Song) are set to make waves (no pun intended) within the professional basketball franchise the Los Angeles Waves, when Isla gets promoted to president of the team. She has all sorts of upstream swimming to do in the role as her brothers doubt her capabilities and the players don’t exactly take her seriously, but she has many tricks up her sleeve, and she has been paying attention to the game since she was a little girl.

Kate Hudson has had a robust career, but “Running Point” marks a first for the actress. Believe it or not, this is her first leading TV role.
Now streaming on Netflix, the series focuses on Isla Gordon (Hudson), as she’s unexpectedly given control of her family’s basketball team, the Waves. Though a fictional team and story, “Running Point” is loosely based on Lakers president Jeanie Buss.
Here are all the major players you’ll need to know in the series.
Netflix Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson)
Isla Gordon is the sole daughter of the Gordon family, and is taken fully by surprise when her oldest brother hands her the reins to the team. She’s played by Kate Hudson, known for films like “Almost Famous,” “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” and many, many more.

Indecision. While deleterious when recurring over the course of a lifetime, dilly-dallying can kill even quicker on a basketball court. A belated pass leads to a turnover, the slightest hitch spoils a fast break, and a mistimed offense can never score enough to win. Indecision in comedy is equally unforgiving. Typically, it pops up when someone misses a punchline or rushes their set-up, but in the case of Netflix’s “Running Point,” the problem is foundational. With so many broadly defined characters pivoting to do whatever the story requires, and so little investment in any one facet of the 10-episode first season, Mindy Kaling’s latest sitcom struggles to connect — sincerely or comedically. It tries to do too much and rather than sticking by the choices it makes, “Running Point” is simply overrun.
Kate Hudson stars as Isla Gordon, the black sheep of a basketball family simply because she’s the only woman involved.

Netflix‘s new series Running Point has arrived, and with it, the introduction of the Gordon family, who oversees the fictional LA-based basketball team the Waves. In the series, we’re introduced to Cam (Justin Theroux), the eldest of the Gordon siblings and acting CEO of the basketball team. When he finds himself in a legal pickle, he appoints baby sister Isla (Kate Hudson) to take the reins in his stead. This raises some eyebrows, particularly from her brothers Sandy (Drew Tarver) and Ness (Scott MacArthur), since they believed they’d be next in line for the coveted seat. This forces Isla to work twice as hard to prove herself, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some roadblocks bound to get in the way. As viewers will see in the opening of the series, a major revelation forces the family to reckon with their late father’s past...

Running Point made its debut on Netflix on Feb. 27, and the series starring Kate Hudson was an immediate slam dunk. The actress and singer stars in the comedy from Mindy Kaling as a reformed party girl who takes over the family business as its president. That business? The most lucrative professional men's basketball team in Los Angeles. No pressure at all for a woman!
On top of an incredible creative team behind the scenes, including Kaling's hilarious frequent collaborators Ike Barinholtz and Dave Stassen, Running Point features an exquisite ensemble cast that leans on the unique talents of Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Justin Theroux, Jay Ellis, Max Greenfield, and so many more.
Following the non-stop laughs throughout the near-perfect first season, the 10-episode comedy layup concludes with a nail-biting season finale. With Isla having taken the Waves to the playoffs against great odds, her personal life also takes...

Kate Hudson stole the show in 2022’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story,” her last major comedic role. Hudson played a scandal-ridden fashion designer, skewering the shallow costumes a certain kind of rich social justice influencer wears with giddy, screwball aplomb. The role, functioning as a kind of comeback for Hudson, makes one excited for her next comedic leading role in Netflix’s TV series “Running Point,” especially knowing it comes from comedy vets Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen (who all collaborated on “The Mindy Project”).
But in practice, “Running Point” does not let Hudson discover the specificities and eccentricities so joyfully gleaned in her previous work. The 10-episode first season is a flattening, often maddening watch, only occasionally rising above generic familiarities to deliver something trenchant or specific about its otherwise generically dysfunctional family.

The new sitcom Running Point, which premieres on Netflix today, has several creators. Elaine Ko spent years writing Modern Family. Ike Barinholtz is a prolific character actor on everything from Blockers to The White House Plumbers, not to mention a Celebrity Jeopardy! champion. David Stassen is a writer and director whose credits include History of the World: Part II. But the fourth creator — Mindy Kaling — is the only one who’s parlayed her work writing on and co-starring in The Office into becoming a brand. Now, she’s the mogul behind Never Have I Ever, The Sex Lives of College Girls and The Mindy Project. She’s the social media maven with a signature swimsuit line; and if she hasn’t quite reached mononym status yet, the brand-new star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame gets her just a little closer.

Ready for some slam-dunk laughs? Netflix's new original comedy series Running Point, from none other than Mindy Kaling, finally made its premiere on Feb. 27, and it's going to be tough to beat as the funniest comedy series of 2025. Kate Hudson makes an easy lay-up in her first foray into comedy television, finding a comfortable home in Kaling's witty writing.
Running Point takes a play from the real-life experience of Los Angeles Lakers president Jeanie Buss, but Kaling and her co-showrunners Ike Barinholtz and Dave Stassen turn the realistic setup up a notch into a larger-than-life comedy world. Isla Gordon (Hudson) unexpectedly takes over as president of her family's business, the successful Los Angeles Waves basketball team.
Isla hikes an uphill battle (in heels!) to be taken seriously amid doubts from her brothers, the board, the team, and the unrelenting public.

Mindy Kaling is back with Running Point. She has been a singular comic voice on television for the past fifteen years. Her Fox and Hulu series The Mindy Project, which you can also find streaming on Netflix, was one of the funniest sitcoms of the decade. Then came the semi-autobiographical Never Have I Ever, a hilarious coming-of-age story unlike anything else on television, whether streaming or network.
However, Running Point is nothing like those shows because it’s just another run-of-the-mill comedy. The series is not particularly funny, relying too heavily on excessive exposition and basketball lingo that isn’t executed well. It’s pleasant enough but ultimately a gigantic letdown, given the cast and the talent involved, particularly behind the camera.

Peak TV may technically be in the past, but its specter still lingers. How else do you get two flashy, star-studded TV shows about the Los Angeles Lakers in the span of three years? The first, HBO’s “Winning Time,” dramatized the basketball team’s years of triumph in the 1980s; the latest, Netflix’s “Running Point,” is both more contemporary and more fictional, though it has closer ties to the actual Lakers organization through owner Jeanie Buss and front office fixture Linda Rambis, both executive producers.
“Running Point” can and does stand on its own, but it’s useful to drill down on the comparison to “Winning Time” to establish why the newer show may stand a stronger chance at long-term success. Some of that potential comes down to shared strengths: like “Winning Time,” “Running Point” is as packed with famous faces, as any tribute to Hollywood’s home team ought to be.

Running Point tells the story of Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson), who is unexpectedly and abruptly tasked with running her dysfunctional family’s business: the Los Angeles Waves, aka the greatest basketball franchise of all time. The lone underestimated sister among three competitive brothers, Isla deflects initial skepticism from across the (score)board when she comes off the bench as the team’s new president. She leads the Waves into Game Seven of the playoffs — and their strongest year yet — in the finale of this comedy series.
From writer-producers Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen, Running Point opens with Isla, her hands already full from working in the Waves’ front office, suddenly promoted. Her brothers Ness (Scott MacArthur), the team’s general manager, and Sandy (Drew Tarver), their CFO, don’t think she has what it takes — and can’t understand why their eldest brother Cam (Justin Theroux) chose her...

Kate Hudson might be best known for her romantic comedies on the big screen, but the Oscar-nominated movie star is tackling her first leading role in a comedy series with Netflix's new sitcom Running Point.

None other than The Office and The Mindy Project (not to mention Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives of College Girls) mastermind Mindy Kaling co-created the series, which she also writes and executive produces.

If you're a fan of Mindy Kaling and are a Netflix subscriber, there's a bit of good and bad news for you going into the end of February 2025. No, her modern classic teen comedy Never Have I Ever isn't going anywhere (thankfully), but the star's eponymous sitcom The Mindy Project will be departing Netflix by the end of the month. Grab a bear claw and lie on the floor in distress!
As a comedy series that originally aired on Fox, then moved to Hulu as an original when the streamer saved it from cancellation, and was produced by NBCUniversal, it was surprising when the underrated workplace rom-com landed on Netflix back in January 2023. It was a pleasant surprise nonetheless as lots of new viewers had the chance to discover the series.

While our friends on IndieWire’s film team prepare for the Oscars, the month kicks off with the Grammy Awards on February 2, every year’s biggest TV and music crossover. It’s also host to one of the biggest TV events of the decade if not the century: the “Saturday Night Live” fiftieth anniversary celebration, a star-studded tribute to a storied institution (catch up on “SNL50” on Peacock!).
February is a big month for Netflix, starting with the Kaitlyn-Dever led “Apple Cider Vinegar,” a delicious story of social media fraud in set in the infancy of Instagram. That would be a heavy hitter in any month, but the streamer keeps going; with “Zero Day”, then with “Running Point” from executive producers Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen.
Speaking of punches, this month marks the return of “Peaky Blinders” creator...

Netflix is welcoming you to the family business.
In the trailer for the new series Running Point released Thursday, Kate Hudson stars as Isla Gordon, the new appointed president of the Los Angeles Waves basketball franchise. Being thrown into the job after a scandal forces her brother (Justin Theroux) to resign, Hudson’s Isla has to work on proving her skeptical family, the board and sports community that she is adept for the job.
“I work in a family business for the greatest basketball franchise in the history of the game, the Los Angeles Waves. And this is the story of the fucked-up family that runs it,” Hudson can be overheard saying in the trailer.
Throughout the rest of the teaser, Hudson has to prove herself against the naysayers, some of which describe her as a “Nepo baby” who doesn’t know what she’s doing. Despite the doubts, Husdon...

Kate Hudson is proving critics wrong as she climbs the basketball ranks in Netflix’s “Running Point.”
In the trailer for the new series, released Thursday, Hudson’s Isla Gordon is appointed as new president of the Los Angeles Waves after her brother enters rehab, forcing her to prove herself to her doubting family and a boatload of critics.
“You are president of the Waves — this is shocking,” Waves’ chief of staff and Isla’s bestfriend, Ali Lee (Brenda Song), tells her in the trailer before warning, “but on behalf of all women, don’t ever make a mistake — looks bad for all of us.”
After her eldest brother chose the only sister in the family to run the business, Isla’s other brothers — Scott MacArthur’s Ness Gordon, the Waves’ general manager; and Drew Tarver’s Sandy Gordon, the team’s chief financial officer — are some of her harshest critics.

How do you pick up on the success of a sport-themed comedy series like Ted Lasso move it from England to the U.S., from soccer to basketball, and bring it to your streaming service?
Netflix’s answer to that question just might be Award-worthy. The new series stars Kate Hudson, the Golden Globe winner and Academy Award-nominated actor who is also an executive producer of the new sitcom. The series is set to premiere on February 27, 2025.
But what is the premise of Running Point?

While we're anxiously awaiting Nobody Wants This season 2, Netflix has another original comedy series full of laughs and romance prepared to take over our watch lists. Once again, the streamer has an A-list star in the leading role, a hilarious team behind the scenes, and an exciting premise that will have us all hooked and laughing out loud.
Academy Award-nominated movie star Kate Hudson headlines the new Netflix comedy series Running Point, which makes its premiere on Thursday, Feb. 27. After starring the second season of the Apple TV+ anthology series Truth Be Told, Hudson takes on her first major leading role in a television series, and it's a title that has put the fan-favorite right back in her 2000s rom-com roots.

For those that worship at the altar of Mindy Kaling, February brings good news.
The comedian’s latest project, “Running Point,” is a 10-episode comedy series starring Kate Hudson. When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla (Hudson) is put in charge of the L.A. Also starring Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Jay Ellis and Max Greenfield, the show is the easiest of easy binge watches, with a bunch of comedians (and fun famous cameos!) set loose to do their thing.
For a laugh-free experience, this month also finds Robert De Niro in his first regular TV role, when the limited series “Zero Day,” also starring Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan, Angela Bassett, and Connie Britton comes to the platform February 20.

When Mindy Kaling joined Meghan Markle’s new cooking show as a guest recently, she found herself very impressed by the Duchess’ culinary skills.
Speaking to Deadline on the Golden Globes red carpet on Sunday, Kaling revealed her experience filming the show titled With Love, Meghan, set to premiere on Netflix January 15.

Cary Dubek's villainous arc on The Other Two was a surprising turn for the character, but also a brilliant one. The HBO Max comedy series The Other Two is a hilarious look behind the scenes of modern celebrity and media life as it focuses on the Dubek twins, Cary (Drew Tarver) and Brooke (Helne Yorke), the two older adult siblings of Chase Dreams (Case Walker), the hottest new pop star on the planet. The series follows their hilarious misadventures as they try to get out from under the shadow of their famous baby brother.
The Other Two served as a smart and hysterical satire of show business in the 21st century, skewering everything from industry parties to method actors to procedural shows. However, at the core of the show was the respective journeys of Cary and Brooke as they sought their own fame and recognition. The final season of The Other Two...

The debut feature from writer-director Kobi Libii, this blackly comic fantasy comedy has a solid central idea, but never quite gets to grips with its own satirical intent. Ultimately, it works better as an offbeat romantic comedy, thanks to an engaging central performance and charming chemistry between the two leads.
Justice Smith stars as Aaron Mbondo, an artist in Los Angeles whose yarn sculptures aren’t quite cutting it with the art gallery crowd. After a painful show, during which he’s mistaken for a waiter, insult is added to injury when he’s nearly beaten up by some white guys who think he’s a mugger. However, he’s rescued at the last minute by Roger (David Alan Grier), a server he recognises from the gallery.

Today, Netflix announced that they’d be reviving Mr. Gilmore, but little else is known.
Should some of Happy’s old rivals return?
Christopher McDonald played Happy’s rival Shooter McGavin, and he mentioned the project in March.
Whether that means he’ll be along for the ride remains to be seen.

Netflix released a first look at “Running Point,” Mindy Kaling’s upcoming comedy series starring Kate Hudson.
Per the official logline, “when a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon (Hudson) is appointed president of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job, especially in the unpredictable, male-dominated world of sports.”
The cast also includes Drew Tarver, seen above on the right as Sandy, one of Isla’s brothers and the chief financial officer of The Waves; Scott MacArthur, seen above on the left as Ness, another brother and the Waves’ general manager; and Brenda Song, seen below as Ali Lee, the team’s chief of staff.

At his “Seth Rogen Smokes the Bowl” show on Tuesday night, Rogen transformed the Hollywood Bowl into a stoner’s paradise.
The music and comedy show, which was part of the Netflix is a Joke festival, featured a star-studded lineup of performances from Snoop Dogg, Post Malone, Lil Dicky, Bill Burr, Ramy Youssef, Ronny Chieng and Abbott Elementary‘s Janelle James. The event benefited his and wife Lauren Miller’s non-profit Hilarity For Charity, which advocates for individuals and families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease.
Rogen kicked off the night by lighting a giant bong that was planted on the Bowl stage, channeling an Olympic opening ceremony as the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra played alongside him. Lil Dicky sang the national anthem (as well as a few of his hits), as Rogen returned to tell the orchestra, “I can’t imagine as you were practicing your entire lives to be amazing...
