In Govind Nihalani’s Dev, Om Puri was one of the most outspoken actors of the country, played Bad Cop, the communal law enforcer while Amitabh Bachchan played the Good Cop.

Never one to hide his anger and hurt, Om once surprised this writer by suddenly asking, “Why couldn’t Govind have cast me in (Amitabh) Bachchan saab’s role in Dev? I’ve the highest regard for Bachchan saab. I played his elder brother in Ravi Chopra’s Baabul, although I am eight years his junior. I did it for the pleasure of working with him for the first time.”

With Dev, which turned 21 years old on June 11, Om felt the situation was different. “I had done a major successful film Ardh Satya with Govind. But when he made a big-budgeted film (Dev) he went to Bachchan saab to play the protagonist. I was given the negative role of the corrupt cop.

I don’t know how people who have been in the entertainment business could green light the torture that is named Housefull 5. I understand that in this particular genre, which is termed “brainrot,” one needs to leave logic at the door and just go with the flow. But even after doing that, it was a task to sit through the full duration of Housefull 5. The story, which was apparently conceived by Sajid Nadiadwala after 15 years of thinking and meditation and had two different endings, A and B, for the first time in the history of Indian cinema, was so atrocious that one didn’t know what the writers wanted. The dialog, the conversations, and the situations are the key to a good comedy film, but there too the writers failed completely. Akshay Kumar, as Julius, tried to do whatever he could, but even all his efforts couldn’t save the boat from sinking.

Housefull 5 was set on a luxury cruise ship owned by Ranjeet Dobriyal, because that’s where he wanted to celebrate his 100th birthday. But Ranjeet passed away before the festivities began, thereby forcing Maya (the CFO), Bedi (the COO), Shiraz (the CMO), and Dev (Ranjeet’s son from his second marriage and the CEO) to reckon with an inheritance worth 69 billion pounds. Ranjeet, via a posthumously released hologram message, informed his crew that the aforementioned sum of money will be inherited by Jolly, his son from his first marriage. If Jolly showed disinterest in taking that money, didn’t board the ship to claim the prize, or was dead, then that 69 billion pounds would be distributed amongst Maya, Bedi, Shiraz, Dev, Aakhri Pasta (the cook), Batuk Patel (the security head), Lucy (the lawyer), Doctor Aman Joshi, and Captain Sameer.

What’s Good: The aesthetics of the cruise look well-made, and probably the brief introduction of the characters of Nana Patekar, Sanjay Dutt, and Jackie Shroff.

What’s Bad: The entire illogical plotline, cringeworthy non-funny jokes, unnecessary double meaning jokes, and the overly objectification of the female leads, the potential supporting star cast being wasted, not even the songs have a strong impact.

Loo Break: You can honestly take a loo break or also enjoy an entire popcorn and Samosa meal outside, you won’t miss a thing.

We are done with the first half of Housefull 5, and so far the movie struggles to tickle our funny bones with its cringeworthy double-meaning jokes and a plotline that makes us go, ‘Yeh Ho Kya Raha Hain?’

Actually, there are many men at work–both on and off screen—in Aan: Men At Work. While the cop-heroes sweat it out in their humid halos, the men behind the scenes also make their presence felt in rapidfire motions in this emotionless pictureshow . No sobbing Matajis(thank God!) but loads of slithering and sliding Mata Haris.

There’s of course director Madhur Bhandarkar, in his first foray into frenzied action. Big guns with bigger nozzles attached to them—of both the human and the mechanical mind—strut around with such exaggerated machismo , it becomes hard to tell the bad and good guys apart. Bhandarkar treats his heroes and villains (all festooned to the plot with formulistic splendour) like characters in an extended videogame for juvenile grownups.

Coming off the long-running success of her critical acclaimed, award-winning and viral TikTok sensation limited series “Maid,” Molly Smith Metzler will launch her next project with Netflix this Thursday: the Meghann Fahy and Julianne Moore-led dark comedy miniseries “Sirens.”
