When you step into a theater, anticipating beautiful cinematography, vivid storytelling, and emotional acting, an animated movie is the last thing you expect. Despite animation becoming increasingly more adult nowadays, it is still viewed with a lower regard when discussing true cinematic masterpieces. It is hard to blame those who judge it; with a clear focus on action and spectacle, animation is mainly simple entertainment. This is even more true with anime, a medium which goes against many Western storytelling ideals, such as "show, don't tell." However, the growing industry proves to be branching out in a positive direction, ever-evolving to deliver profound and subtle stories while not compromising on the creativity seen in anime. This is very present with Tatsuya Oishi, director of Kizumonogatari -Koyomi Vamp- and Bakemonogatari. He is able to express precise emotions in animation that tell a whole story, giving profound insight into the characters and their inner feelings,...

Welcome to the fascinating world of Kizumonogatari: Koyomi Vamp, a sweeping prequel to the acclaimed Monogatari series. Join high schooler Koyomi Araragi as his ordinary spring break takes an extraordinary turn. When he discovers the injured vampire Kiss-Shot, their fates become intertwined in a quest that will push the limits of humanity.
This animated compilation adapts Nisio Isin’s novel into a cinematic epic. We’re introduced to Koyomi, an average teen enjoying his vacation, until an encounter with the bewitching Kiss-Shot pulls him into the realm of monsters and magic. Now bound by blood, he fights to help her reclaim stolen powers from formidable foes.
Along the way, Koyomi relies on the support of friends new and old. Classmate Tsubasa Hanekawa proves a level-headed guide, while supernatural fixer Meme Oshino offers cryptic aid. But Kiss-Shot remains the fierce heart of the story, as her uncanny evolution mirrors Koyomi’s own changing nature.

Directed by Tatsuya Oishi and animated by Shaft, the original trilogy of “Kizumonogatari” films was released in 2016 and 2017 and adapted from the “Monogatari” series of novels by Nisioisin.

Kizumonogatari -Koyomi Vamp- begins with a kinetic display of carnage where its main character bursts into flames and careens down a skyscraper like a rogue pinball. It’s a violent, chaotic way to begin this vampire tale that feels all-too thematically appropriate for its conflicted hero, Koyomi Araragi, who gets pulled in extreme directions as he struggles to gain control of his life. It’s not dissimilar to the madness that the audience experiences as Koyomi Vamp’s aggressive storytelling grabs hold of them and doesn’t let go for two-and-a-half hours.
Anime is dense in groundbreaking and foundational vampire texts, whether it’s Vampire Hunter D, Blood: The Last Vampire, Hellsing, or even absurdly violent monster titles like Wicked City and Demon City Shinjuku. However, Kizunonogatari -Koyomi Vamp- clears them all. There’s a strong case to be made that Koyomi Vamp is not just one of the best anime vampire movies of all-time,...

With the recent announcement of Monogatari ’s upcoming Off and Monster seasons, I’m sure many of you are wondering how exactly one’s supposed to hop aboard this intimidating franchise. Monogatari ’s tales of supernatural menace and psychological inquiry are diverse and fascinating, but the series has been adopted piecemeal over the years, stretched across a variety of seasons, films, and OVAs that don’t necessarily lend themselves to easy on-boarding. Fortunately, you’ve got me here to help you out. And while specific questions like, “Should I watch the prequel film before the series, at its publication point in order, or when it was actually released?” might still invite debate, the Monogatari series as a whole isn’t terribly difficult to dive into, and well worth the effort. Sticking largely with the broadcast order that’s defined most fans’ experience with the series (and moving the occasional temporal...

In yet another example of anime blending into the real world, to celebrate the release of the Kizumonogatari -Koyomi Vamp- anime film, a compilation re-edit of the three Kizumonogatari anime films, the film has taken over Shinjuku Sanchome Tokyo Metro station in a media blitz until January 15. For those with a keen eye and have seen the original three films, you might be able to tell that Shinjuku Sanchome Station was the inspiration behind the iconic scene where Araragi and Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade met for the very first time.
