Grihapravesh (2025)
Grihapravesh (2025) Movie Review: Subhashree Ganguly is the Shining Light in this Muddled Tribute to Rituparno Ghosh
Grihapravesh (2025)
Indraadip Dasgupta’s Grihapravesh (2025) is billed as a tribute to filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh. The premise also has promise: a chamber drama soaked in the emotional turbulence of a woman wronged by fate, yet stoically carrying the weight of duty. But the film ends up as an overly sentimental patchwork. It tries to honour an auteur’s legacy but never quite taps into the heart of what made his cinema so powerful.

The story revolves around Titli, a young woman left adrift emotionally and socially after her husband walks out just a week into their marriage. With nowhere else to go, she continues to live with her ageing in-laws — played by Kaushik Ganguly and Sohini Sengupta — assuming the roles of caregiver, daughter, and emotional anchor in their lives. There’s a quiet grace with which Titli inhabits her grief, never allowing self-pity to eclipse her sense of responsibility.

The story takes...

Prosenjit Chatterjee, Dev Headline Svf and Hoichoi’s Content Slate for 2025-26
Image
Eastern India’s dominant entertainment conglomerate Svf and its streaming platform Hoichoi have unveiled an expansive content lineup featuring over 25 new titles spanning series, theatrical releases, and innovative formats. The announcement came during “Golper Parbon 1432,” a showcase event celebrating Svf’s 30-year journey in Bengali-language entertainment.

Leading the theatrical slate are two major star vehicles: Prosenjit Chatterjee’s adventure thriller “Vijaynagar’er Hirey” and Dev’s period fantasy “Raghu Dakat.” In “Vijaynagar’er Hirey,” directed by Chandrasish Ray, Chatterjee reprises his iconic role as the intrepid adventurer Kakababu, who embarks on a perilous quest for a mythical treasure. Meanwhile, “Raghu Dakat,” directed by Dhrubo Banerjee, features Dev alongside Anirban Bhattacharya, Sohini Sarkar, Idhika Paul, and Roopa Ganguly in a fantasy rooted in Bengal’s history, chronicling the rise of an outlaw.

The streaming platform is reaching its milestone 200th original series. Among the most anticipated series are “Anushandhan,” starring Subhashree Ganguly...

Mithun Chakraborty, Subhasree Ganguly, and Ritwick Chakraborty in Shontaan (2024)
Film Review: Shontaan (2024) by Raj Chakraborty
Mithun Chakraborty, Subhasree Ganguly, and Ritwick Chakraborty in Shontaan (2024)
At the beginning of ‘Shontaan‘, this text appears on screen: “Based on real incidents.” And rightly so. In today’s world, stories of children neglecting their older parents are commonplace in every neighbourhood. Making a film on this subject, especially in Bengal, is equally common. Here, movies like ‘Posto‘ and ‘Shonar Pahar‘ have already depicted familial tussles between children and their parents. So, the first question that comes to mind before watching ‘Shontaan’ is: “What new will it bring to the screen?” The answer: nothing at all. It reproduces the same generic tropes with exaggerated characters and moral lecturing.

The story revolves around an older couple, Saradindu Bose and Meghmala Bose, who are abandoned by their son, Indranil. A self-centered and selfish man, Indranil spends his time partying with his friends or going to family trips to Bangkok without giving any thought about his older mother’s medical treatment. He...
