After 'Exterritorial,' Another German Thriller Is Dominating the Netflix Charts Despite a 35% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
It looks like this is a pretty good year for German movies on Netflix. A couple of weeks ago, the world was taken by storm when it was announced that Exterritorial became one of the most popular movies on the platform after just three months. Now, a new thriller hailing from the same country is taking over the top 10. This week, Netflix announced that Brick debuted as the #1 most-watched non-English film globally, which might point to another hit in the making.

Brickhas a pretty unique concept. It centers around a couple who are not at the best moment in their relationship. However, they are forced to put that aside when they simply wake up one night and discover that there is a massive brick wall outside their door, which prevents them from going outside. Since the wall is pretty much indestructible, the couple is forced to team up with neighbors...

Brick Soars To Top On Netflix Despite Poor Rating! (Photo Credit – Netflix)

Brick cracked through the surface of Netflix and climbed straight to the top, even as critics turned away. This German thriller, set entirely in a sealed-off apartment block, has turned heads worldwide, despite being buried under a bleak 35% score from Rotten Tomatoes.

The film, directed by Philip Koch and currently positioned at 1 (per Flixpatrol), follows a couple and their neighbors trying to survive after their building is trapped behind a giant brick wall.

Brick Continues To Keep Viewers Hooked

Brick’s cast features Matthias Schweighöfer and Ruby O. Fee as the lead pair, joined by faces like Frederick Lau and Sira-Anna Faal. Although the performances kept the plot moving, reviews were not kind, with the score currently standing at 35% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix Users Are Obsessed With An Intense Sci-Fi Escape Room Thriller
Image
This post contains spoilers for Netflix's "Brick."

When horror stories are confined to a single location, every emotion is intensified. The visceral fear of being trapped in a confined space can be a gateway for great scares, especially when the characters realize there's no easy way out. The psychological implications of single-location horror are multifold, as such stories are able to explore character motivations in contexts that everyday situations rarely afford. The associated tropes that come with them — twist reveals, cabin fever-induced confusion, and the human instinct to overcome impossible odds — only make the experience that much sweeter. Netflix's new escape room thriller, "Brick," tries to live up to those expectations, but it doesn't arrive at any groundbreaking conclusions during the process. Nevertheless, it's a film worth checking out.

If we take a quick look at Netflix's weekly Top 10 movies in the U.S., "Brick" is sitting in third place at the moment,...

Netflix's New Claustrophobic Thriller Becomes Instant Global Hit Despite 35% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
A Netflix thriller has ascended the global streaming charts, despite a poor critical response. Netflix continues to release movies across all genres, but thrillers remain some of the streamer's biggest successes. Carry-On (2024), for example, was a massive hit upon release, eventually working its way up to becoming Netflix's second most-watched English movie ever.

Carry-On is far from the only English-language Netflix thriller success, though. Last year, movies like Rebel Ridge and Don't Move were also significant releases in terms of viewership. In 2023, The Killer made a splash, and this year, Havoc was also a modest success, despite mixed reviews.

It's not just with English-language thrillers that Netflix is finding success, however, as the genre proves to be popular internationally. One of the biggest releases last year was Under Paris, a French shark attack movie, which is currently the second most-watched non-English movie on the service.

Netflix's international success continued earlier...

After Just 2 Days, Netflix's Panned New Thriller With 31% on Rotten Tomatoes Is the #1 Streaming Movie Worldwide
Image
Netflix has been constantly releasing original films that usually become big streaming hits. That often happens even if the audiences and critics don't enjoy the project.

Such is the case for one of the most recent releases: Brick. Not to be confused with the 2005 neo-noir mystery thriller of the same name, with Knives Out's Rian Johnson in his directorial debut, the new Netflix film is a sci-fi German movie that has the residents of a building unexpectedly caught in their homes by a surprising brick wall. Although Brick received negative reviews, it didn't take long for it to become a worldwide hit, FlixPatrol reports.

Brick premiered on Netflix on Jul. 10, and two days later, it's already the #1 film worldwide. On its first day, the sci-fi mystery film topped the charts in 43 countries, and further grew to 44 countries on Jul. 12. Considering that it's a foreign film with little to no promotion,...

7 Movies to Watch If You Liked ‘Brick’ on Netflix
Image
Netflix’s Brick (2025), directed by Philip Koch and starring Matthias Schweighöfer, Ruby O. Fee, and Frederick Lau, is a claustrophobic escape-room-styled thriller. The story revolves around a distant couple, Tim and Liv, who wake up to find their entire building mysteriously sealed in by impenetrable black walls overnight. As they dig deeper (both literally and metaphorically), they uncover a government glitch, a deranged conspiracy theorist, and a series of fatal consequences. While the film doesn’t break new ground in terms of genre innovation, it delivers a tense, compact experience that’s perfect for viewers who enjoy contained thrillers with high-stakes drama and a mystery at the core.

If Brick piqued your interest, you’re likely craving more stories of people trapped in surreal, high-concept scenarios — stories that explore survival, systems of control, psychological strain, and sci-fi paranoia. Below are 7 movies like Brick on Netflix and beyond, each echoing its...

That roster includes Bird Box, The Adam Project, Don't Look Up, and Carry-On, with the star-studded action-comedy Red Notice topping the chart with a whopping 230.9 million viewers.

‘Brick’ Ending Explained: The Truth Behind Olivia, Tim, and the Black Wall Mystery
Image
Spoiler Alert !!!The following article contains spoilers from Netflix's Brick!

Netflix has done it again, surpassing the expectations of its viewers and coming up with a film that might be the worst nightmare for every claustrophobic person. Released recently on the Ott platform, the German sci-fi flick Brick took us by surprise with its out-of-the-box concept of a defense system gone rogue. The locked-room mystery is the newest film joining the library after KPop Demon Hunters and The Old Guard 2, where people had contrasting opinions following both films.

This escape room concept movie is an easy-to-follow plot, featuring flawed yet relatable characters. Thus, it becomes a juicy thriller, where they are segregated from the outside world. However, the open ending leaves ample room for us to interpret that the mystery of the black brick is far from over.

Brick (2025) ‘Netflix’ Movie Ending Explained: Why Did the ‘Wall’ Suddenly Appear?
Image
Despite a focused and committed cast, led by Matthias Schweighofer and Ruby O. Fee, writer-director Philip Koch’s escape room thriller Brick (2025) is a tepidly unremarkable affair. As if checking from a list, the Netflix film navigates most of the tropes of films of such ilk and fails to rise above its generic structure. However, it remains a passably entertaining watch if you are in the mood. Just do not expect to be wowed by the experience. “Brick” has its central characters, a growing-distant couple, trapped when their entire building is walled in. The characters try to find a solution to escape the building, while theorizing about the reason for their predicament. Let us analyse the story and the ‘conspiracy’ that dictated the fate of the characters.

Brick (2025) Netflix Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

The film starts with a glance at Tim (Matthias Schweighofer) and Liv (Ruby O. Fee), and how...

Netflix’s Brick Cast And Characters Guide
Image
Netflix’s German sci-fi survival thriller, Brick, is a fine example of a constrained setting story that heavily depends on the performances of the cast to fully capture atmospheric dread and anxiety. Showing how survival drive affects individuals to differing extents, Brick ramps up the stakes and builds up narrative tension. While there might be mixed opinions regarding whether the ending delivered as strongly, there is no argument regarding the dedication of the involved cast and crew. A special mention should be made about the production design, as the settings act as a character as well.

Tim Played by Matthias Schweighofer

German actor/director Matthias Schweighofer has been active in both the silver screen and small screen scenes since the late 90s. Over the years he has built a solid profile with his direction in a number of comedy movies and acting performance in ventures like The Red Baron, Valkyrie,...

Netflix’s New Movie ‘Brick’: A Sci-Fi Thriller at War With Itself
Image
In the new German film Brick, a couple awakens to find their apartment building inexplicably encased overnight by a mysterious, impenetrable wall. This high-concept premise, reminiscent of classic “puzzle box” stories, serves as the foundation for a science fiction thriller that has premiered on Netflix. Starring Matthias Schweighöfer and Ruby O. Fee, the film uses its claustrophobic setting to explore a relationship under extreme duress.

The Emotional Core Under Siege

At the heart of the narrative is the strained dynamic between Tim (Schweighöfer), a workaholic games programmer, and his partner Olivia (Fee), an architect. Their lives are shadowed by the past loss of a child, a trauma that has driven them apart. Tim has retreated into his work, while Olivia has made a desperate bid for a fresh start, quitting her job and buying a camper van for an escape they may never take. The sudden appearance of the physical...

Brick Review: When the Walls Are Within
Image
The film opens not with a slow burn but with a slammed door, both literal and metaphorical. Tim, a workaholic games programmer, and Olivia, an architect, are a couple suspended in the quiet animation of a relationship eroded by unspoken grief. She has just purchased a camper van, a tangible symbol of the new life she desperately wants to begin. He has refused, retreating into the familiar comfort of his work. They awaken the next morning to an impossible reality.

Their apartment, a space of shared history and current tension, has become a tomb. Every door and window is fused shut by a seamless, black brick monolith that has materialized overnight. It is an impenetrable, uneven, and vaguely magnetic barrier. With this startling event, the modern world is severed; electricity, water, and digital connections vanish, leaving only the raw immediacy of their confinement.

The irony is brutal. Olivia sought an escape from their life,...

‘Army of Thieves’ Review (Netflix)
Image
Stars: Matthias Schweighofer, Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, Christian Steyer | Written by Shay Hatten | Directed by Matthias Schweighofer

With the release of Army of the Dead, Netflix gave us a fun zombie film that was pretty throw away but promised more. One character that stole the movie though was Ludgwig Dieter (Matthias Schweighofer) so it’s only fair that a prequel, Army of Thieves, would focus on the safe cracking hero.

Living a boring life in Germany, we discover how Dieter became the legendary safe cracker he did. We also meet the titular Army of Thieves who worked with him to pull off some of the biggest European heists, before his sights were set on the zombie infested Las Vegas bank job.

Where Army of the Dead was more about non-stop high-action zombie battles, in Army of Thieves they are little more than anxiety nightmares and perhaps premonitions for Dieter.

‘Army of Thieves’ Review: A Prequel to ‘Army of the Dead,’ With No Zombies and One Genius Safecracker
Image
If Hans Landa and Danny Ocean had a son, he might have turned out something like Sebastian (Matthias Schweighöfer), the talky, insanely gifted, but insecure hero of “Army of Thieves.” A Berlin office teller who hides his mojo behind an earnestly chirpy German accent, he’s an obsessive amateur safecracker — not a crook but a kind of savant hobbyist who dreams of unlocking metal fortress vaults the way a young theater bug in the Midwest might fantasize about making his Broadway debut.

“Army of Thieves” is a prequel to “Army of the Dead,” the Zack Snyder apocalyptic zombie heist thriller in which Sebastian — known, at that point, as Dieter — hooked up with a team of thieves in Vegas. Snyder’s movie, released just five months ago, was an entertainingly overstuffed genre mash-up. “Army of Thieves,” directed by its star, Matthias Schweighöfer (from a script by Snyder and Shay Hatten), is...

Zack Snyder at an event for Sucker Punch (2011)
Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead Universe Is Here to Stay
Zack Snyder at an event for Sucker Punch (2011)
Despite his exit from Warner Bros’ big-screen DC movie universe, director Zack Snyder isn’t done with shared universes just yet. And while his tenure as the creative lead of the Dceu, which culminated with this year’s Snyder Cut of Justice League, may have been polarizing to say the least, the Army of the Dead director may actually be just what Netflix needed.

After years of chasing ways to build its own coveted blockbuster shared universe, such as with its failed attempt to launch a superhero universe based on Mark Millar’s Jupiter’s Legacy, the streaming service finally seems to have the foundation it was looking for with Snyder’s return to the genre that turned him into an A-lister back in 2004. In fact, Army of the Dead was originally conceived as a sequel to Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, but almost two decades later, it’s grown much bigger than that.
