Donkey Spinoff Production Starting After Shrek 5, Confirmed By Eddie Murphy
Image
The Shrek franchise will seemingly be expanding after Shrek 5, with a beloved supporting character getting his time in the spotlight. The trailer for the long-awaited Shrek 5 dropped in February 2025, which confirmed that the movie would see a major time jump, with Mike Myers' Shrek's now-teenage daughter played by Zendaya.

Shrek has been delivering laugh-out-loud, fairy-tale-turned-upside-down adventures for more than 20 years, always accompanied by his fiery wife Fiona (Cameron Diaz) and most often his friends Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas). While Puss has led his own successful spinoff movies, Donkey has not gotten that chance – but that is changing.

ScreenRant's Liam Crowley spoke with Eddie Murphy for his new film The Pickup, when the conversation turned to the Shrek franchise. Murphy revealed that the voice cast is still recording Shrek 5, but that he will soon be starting work on a Donkey spinoff movie,...

Fear the Reaper – 6 of the Scariest Depictions of Death in Horror Films
Image
Does anyone else remember that badass Jason Voorhees design from Wildstorm’s 2007 comic-book sequel Freddy vs. Jason vs Ash? After getting a chainsaw to the face, Jason loses the lower third of his iconic hockey mask and ends up looking like a gnarly parody of the grim reaper throughout the remainder of the story. Not only is this an undeniably cool look for the character, but I also think that it’s an honest depiction of what Jason (and many other horror antagonists) really represent: corpse-like emissaries of Death itself.

And with Final Destination Bloodlines revisiting the idea of death as both a scheming entity and a mere fact of life (not to mention Oz Perkins’ The Monkey dealing with many of the same ideas), we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the scariest depictions of death in horror films. After all, artists have been...

Ryan Coogler's Sinners Has A Surprising Connection To A Shrek Spinoff
Image
Amid rave early reviews, Sinners seems to be another hit from the creative vision of acclaimed director Ryan Coogler. While the feature-length project is an original story, the filmmaker says that one aspect of his movie was influenced by a beloved animated character from the Shrek spinoof, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

Speaking on Get Rec’d w/ Straw Hat Goofy (via The Art of Dialogue on X), Coogler revealed that The Last Wish's villain, Death, inspired the creation of the vampires in Sinners. According to the filmmaker, Death's demeanor and presentation were a good starting point for him when he conceptualized the vampires for his supernatural thriller. "So I talk about influences in this movie. That's a massive one I love," he said. "Think about the villain Death, think about his defining features [the eyes], think about his demeanor."

Director Ryan Coogler reveals that the movie “Puss in Boots:...

Shrek 5 broke the internet when Dreamworks Animation announced it in July 2024. Releasing on December 23, 2026, the film will reunite Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and Cody Cameron as Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, and Pinocchio respectively. Shrek 5 is set to be one of the biggest animated cinematic endeavors of 2026, with the Shrekfranchise having amassed a huge fan base since the first film's release on June 29, 2001. DreamWorks' fantasy saga has proven so successful that there have been multiple video games, stage musicals, and theme park attractions based on the ogre and his friends.

This means a lot is riding on Shrek 5's potential success and despite Shrek 5 being in experienced hands, the franchise's fans have voiced serious concerns regarding the sequel's direction. DreamWorks Animation showcased a short...

The Sopranos: The Hidden Meaning Behind Every Animal Explained
Image
The seminal HBO series "The Sopranos" ended almost 20 years ago now, but it remains both relevant and incredibly rewatchable. There are so many details packed into every episode that such rewatches are a joy, because there's almost always something new to discover. And in a show with metaphors aplenty, there are none more powerful or more frequent than the show's use of animals to tell us more about the inner lives of New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) and his closest friends and family. The various members of the sprawling New Jersey criminal organization beneath Tony aren't exactly the kind of guys who open up and talk about their feelings much (even if several of them admit to Tony that they see therapists), so how they interact with the world has to be our guide.

There are a few animals whose appearance doesn't seem to be a metaphor,...

The Shrek and Puss In Boots franchises have created an expansive universe with many unique and engaging characters. Spanning over two decades, it has become one of the most beloved intellectual properties to date, and many fans still quote it today.

Shrek's John Lithgow revealed he would be willing to reprise his role as Lord Farquaad if asked to join the franchise's upcoming fifth film. Unfortunately, Lithgow also confirmed that he's not a part of the new movie.

Speaking with People, Lithgow said he would "say yes in a minute" to joining the cast of Shrek 5 as Lord Farquaad, the villainous main antagonist of the franchise's first film. At the end of 2001's Shrek, Lithgow's character was eaten by the fire-breathing dragon who guarded Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), and Lithgow joked to people about Farquaad's death preventing him from reprising his role. "It turns out it's impossible to recover from being eaten by a dragon," he said, adding that he hasn't been approached about joining Shrek 5.

The 10 Best DreamWorks Animation Movies, Ranked
Image
In its nearly 30 years of existence, DreamWorks Animation has had a remarkable trajectory marked primarily by the bulk of franchises it created, as much as through the quality of the films themselves. Consider that one of its chief competitors, Pixar Animation Studios, started making feature-length computer-animated films in 1995 and has made just 28 features in the intervening 30 years. DreamWorks? Well, it's made 49 features in just over 25 years. Some of these films are best left forgotten or have only been rediscovered over time courtesy of oddball memes (see: "Bee Movie"). But DreamWorks Animation, amidst the Trolls and boss babies, the chatty penguins of Madagascar, and silent horses who embody the spirit of the Cimarron, has made 10 genuinely solid movies. And with the arrival in late September of DreamWorks' "The Wild Robot," there's no better time than right now to rank those 10 films and see if the studio's latest title makes the grade.

10 Movies Stuck In Development Hell That I Really Hope Still Release
Image
Shrek 5 has a 2026 release date with some original cast members returning, prompting cautious optimism. The Cruel Prince adaptation has been stagnant, despite the potential for YA fantasy success. Guillermo del Toro's At the Mountains of Madness remains in limbo, despite fan anticipation for the fantasy-horror film.

Some movies have been stuck in development hell for what seems like ages that I know a lot of people would still like to see get made. With so many unwanted upcoming sequels and remakes, I and many other people are wondering why Hollywood doesn't spend its time on more promising sequels or original ideas, as well as book-to-movie adaptations that are practically guaranteed to be a success. Certain projects already have a particular director or lead actor attached to them, making people even more eager to see that movie come to fruition.

Some of the movies I would still like to...

Shrek 5's 16 Year Gap Would Be More Alarming If It Wasn't For This 95% Movie On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Shrek 5 can benefit from Puss In Boots' success, providing a blueprint for a fresh, appealing look and compelling narrative direction. The long gap between Shrek 4 & 5 isn't necessarily a problem, as Puss In Boots proves there's still love and admiration for the original films. Shrek 5 has the opportunity to come back better than ever, utilizing the successful aspects of the original films and the lessons learned from Puss In Boots.

In a film industry of often unnecessary reboots, sequels, and spinoffs, making Shrek 5 after sixteen years would be far more alarming if a certain recent movie didn't instill hope for the franchise. When ranking the Shrek movies, the original two are generally the standout films, with the subsequent sequels falling off. 2010's Shrek Forever After missed the mark, with a 57% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an even worse 54% from audiences. With that in mind, adding another sequel...

Puss In Boots' Shrek 5 Absence Is Only Good If DreamWorks Is Going To Make This Sequel Too
Image
Puss in Boots is a vital character in the Shrek franchise, making his absence in Shrek 5 a potential game-changer. The Last Wish sets up a possible crossover with Shrek, leaving room for a Puss in Boots 3. New villains and companions introduced in The Last Wish could connect Puss in Boots 3 and Shrek 5.

Puss In Boots is not expected to return in Shrek 5, a casting decision thats acceptable only if DreamWorks plans on making Puss In Boots 3. Known for his distinct accent and unforgettable one-liners, Puss has gained enough notoriety for two sequels, Puss in Boots and Puss in Boots: Last Wish. He has also appeared in Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After, highlighting his importance to the franchise. As a multidimensional character with the capacity for both excellent swordsmanship and emotional vulnerability, Puss adds a unique flavor to the whole Shrek series.

I Really Need Shrek 5 To Explain What Happened To This Character

Shrek 5 is in development for a 2026 release, bringing back the main voice cast. Artie, who became king in Shrek 3, was notably absent in Shrek Forever After. Shrek 5 needs to address what happened to Artie and Far Far Away from Shrek 3.

There are many possibilities for the story of Shrek 5, but no matter what it is, I need it to explain what happened to one, seemingly forgotten character. In 2001, Shrek arrived to give a fun twist to fairy tales and animated movies, as well as to establish DreamWorks as a worthy competitor to Pixar. Shrek was also the beginning of a franchise that has expanded with spinoffs and more, but the main film series ended in 2010 with Shrek Forever After, which wasnt exactly a hit with critics and viewers, especially when compared to the previous movies.

Shrek 2 Is the Best DreamWorks Sequel, and It Has Yet to Be Matched

Shrek 2 remains the franchise's crowning achievement with greater stakes, new characters, and an epic final battle scene. Shrek 2 takes full advantage of new characters like Puss in Boots and the devious Fairy Godmother in the glamorous Far Far Away. There are plenty of pop culture references in Shrek 2, from parodies of Los Angeles to a hilarious battle scene set to Bonnie Tyler's classic hit.

The Shrek franchise is one of the most iconic in all of modern media. Every '90s and '00s kid who grew up with the franchise can likely rattle off dozens of its iconic quotes. Shrek 5 Still Needs To Confirm This Returning Star After $485 Million Hit Set Up The Sequel

Shrek 5's announcement sparks excitement and questions about casting and plot for the anticipated film. Original stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are confirmed, but Antonio Banderas's return as Puss in Boots remains uncertain. Banderas's success as Puss and the financial performance of the Puss in Boots films suggest his inclusion in Shrek 5 is crucial.

10 Shrek Characters I Really Need To See Return In Shrek 5
Image
Shrek 5 may bring back popular characters such as Puss in Boots and other new additions from the spinoff movies. The animation style of The Last Wish is desired for Shrek 5, along with the inclusion of characters such as Kitty Softpaws and Perrito. Characters like Pinocchio, Artie, Goldilocks, and Brogan could add depth and humor to Shrek 5's storyline, building upon their established personas.

The long-in-development Shrek 5 means the return of the franchise's best characters, a few of which I am especially looking forward to seeing again. It is a given that Shrek (Mike Meyers), Fiona (Cameron Diaz), and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) will be returning. More than likely, Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) will be brought back into the story, following his successful spinoff movies. Puss in Boots and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish expanded the Shrek universe to include several more characters who could also appear in Shrek 5.

Puss In Boots 2 Was Great, But I'm Not Convinced About Shrek's New Spinoff
Image
Puss in Boots 2 exceeded expectations, becoming a cinematic masterpiece and a box office hit. Focusing on Puss as a solo character worked well, providing a fresh style and exploring adult themes. A Donkey spinoff risks feeling too familiar and could suffer without Shrek, as the duo's chemistry is a key factor to the franchise's success.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is one of DreamWorks' all-time best movies, but despite its success, I'm still unconvinced about Shrek's latest spinoff. Given how long it had been since the Shrek franchise last released a movie, my expectations for Puss in Boots 2 were relatively low. Walking into the theater, I didn't expect much, but after leaving, I was blown away. Puss in Boots' second solo outing surpassed all expectations, completely blowing the first movie out of the water and becoming one of my favorite cinematic experiences of the year.

The possibility of Puss in Boots 3 happening is uncertain, given Shrek 5 & Donkey spinoff in development.

14 years after the last mainline Shrek film, Shrek 5 remains an intriguing prospect, but my heart is set on a completely different Shrek sequel that I think would be even better. The Shrek franchise has been a prominent part of animation since its first movie in 2001. The standoffish ogre proved that animated protagonists do not have to be beautiful or happy. The best part about the sequel has got to be the many, many pop-culture references in the film. From a mermaid who looks quite like Ariel from The Little Mermaid to an iconic line from Seinfeld, Shrek 2 left no stone unturned to give its audience a gazillion easter eggs to look out for. However, the Mission: Impossible tribute in the film takes the cake for the best reference.

He is a fulfilling parody of the legendary Zorro, drawing inspiration from the iconic character's swashbuckling ways. Puss in Boots is the most versatile fighter in Far Far Away, showcasing his acrobatic sword skills and tactical combat prowess.

The Shrek franchise is home to many fairytale-inspired characters, but none shine as brightly as the iconic Puss in Boots. First introduced in 2004's Shrek 2, the swashbuckling feline has been a staple of the franchise ever since. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish star Harvey Guillén recently revealed that he wants to return as fan-favorite character Perrito in the long-rumored fifth Shrek movie.

Speaking with ComicBook.com to promote the physical media release of Disney's Wish, Guillén shared that he would "absolutely" return to the role, stating, "Oh, absolutely. 100%. I mean, I think we want to hear, I want to hear Perrito's origin story. When did that whole thing happen with the sock? I want to know a little bit of a backstory there and what happened, and how he got that scar on his tummy. I still don't know how he got that. If you look at the poster he's lifting up his sweater, he has a little scar on his tummy, and I was like, how did you get that?"

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish & The Art Of A Great Villain
Image
Nearly a year ago, Dreamworks Animation released Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. The sequel to the somewhat successful mostly forgotten movie Puss In Boots. ‘Puss In Boots: The Last Wish’, also known as just Puss In Boots 2, follows Puss as he reaches the last of his nine lives. When gaining knowledge about a wishing star, he goes on an ambitious quest to find the star and wish for more lives. Encountering friends and foes along the way.

Upon its release, existing as a sequel to a spinoff of a popular franchise, the public’s expectations of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish weren’t high at all. When the film was released in America on the eleventh of December, 2022 (then elsewhere in other countries and territories), it surprisingly came with positive reviews. Surprising audiences away with its rich storytelling, great characters, and quite shockingly dark moments, Puss In Boots...

Why Puss in Boots: The Last Wish's Wolf Is an Awesome Villain
Image
DreamWorks Animation has delivered no shortage of fantastic villains over its decades-long career, particularly from the Shrek franchise with Lord Farquard (John Lithgow), the Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders), and Rumpelstiltskin (Walt Dohrn). There are of course examples from their other films as well, like the complex Ramesses (Ralph Fiennes) from The Prince of Egypt and the deranged Lord Shen from Kung Fu Panda 2. The acclaimed studio's hit Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is already worthy of being called a modern animated masterpiece for its gorgeous art style, hysterical sense of humor, and surprisingly mature themes on mortality, but the foes that Puss (Antonio Banderas) and his friends face push the sequel into a whole other tier altogether. The variety of the antagonistic forces is also a big plus, with the sympathetic Goldilocks (Florence Pugh) and her crime family of the Three Bears, the power-mad and irredeemable Big Jack...

10 Characters Who Changed The Whole Dynamic Late Into Movie Franchises
Image
Adding new characters to established movie franchises can keep things fresh and impact the main characters in interesting ways. New characters that bring out the best in the rest of the cast can end up being written into sequels, changing the franchise forever. The addition of certain characters, like Luke Hobbs in Fast and Furious, can give the franchise a serious boost and lead to a divergence from its original roots.

Some movie franchises can take a while to find their perfect formula, and characters introduced late in the game can change the entire story. The main characters in major franchises don't change very frequently, but their supporting cast can rotate until something sticks. For example, Tom Cruise has always been at the center of the Mission: Impossible franchise, but Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg have become invaluable companions. Other franchises with a big cast of characters who share the...

Sorry Salem, the Best Talking Cat Is Actually in This Movie
Image
Across the film and television landscape, there is no shortage of notable talking felines, from the endlessly endearing Puss in Boots (voiced by Antonio Banderas) of the Shrek/Puss in Boots franchise to the momentarily popular version of Garfield (voiced by Bill Murray) from the Garfield films. However, when narrowing the scope down to the most famous of black cats, especially in the interest of Spooky Season, chances are for a number of people, the Sabrina franchise’s Salem will first come to mind. Perhaps the most iconic version of the character is from the popular sitcom, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, in which the witch’s feline companion is voiced by Nick Bakay. Salem’s popularity continues to endure, whether in memes pulled from the sitcom, or even in his non-talking form in the recent delightfully campy reimagining, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. And yet, despite his memorability and memeability, Salem...

10 Best Shrek Movie Characters
Image
The Shrek movie series saw the title ogre meet a variety of characters, of which some are now some of the most memorable ones in the whole franchise, even if some of them only appeared once. Back in 2001, DreamWorks brought the computer-animated fantasy movie Shrek, based on the 1990s children’s picture book of the same name by William Steig. With some changes to make it more family-friendly, Shrek ended up parodying fairy tales and their movie adaptations, particularly those by Disney, and it became a massive success thanks to its story and characters, which were unlike those of previous fairy tale movies.

Shrek follows the title ogre, who in order to regain control of his swamp, makes a deal with Lord Farquaad to rescue Princess Fiona for him. With the help of Donkey, Shrek successfully rescues Fiona, with whom he ends up falling in love as they had a...

Puss In Boots Puss in Boots, 2.55pm, Film4, Monday, August 28

The swashbuckling cat with the silky voice of Antonio Banderas was so beloved by fans of Shrek 2 and its sequels that he got his own spin-off film, a franchise that also now continues to expand with this year’s Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. This first instalment is an origin story that's every bit as enjoyable as Shrek was - a rip-roaring adventure that includes all round bad egg Humpty Dumpty (voiced by Zach Galifianakis), cat burglar Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) and a magic beans quest. Packed with visual humour and cat-inflected comedy, with the double-act between Humpty and Puss a real family treat.

Baby Done, 10.45pm, BBC3, Monday, August 28

If you're in the mood for something light and frothy then this New Zealand romcom is well worth a watch. Its likeable, realistic characters go a long way to making.

The Best Summer Blockbusters of the 21st Century
Image
Just two years ago, it seemed like the summer blockbuster might be a thing of the past. After Covid kept cinemas closed across the United States for the majority of 2020, the box office reopened in 2021 on uncertain footing, with many high profile flops and a soft performance for the movies overall. That summer seemed like the harbinger of the end for the seasonal release strategy that “Jaws” perfected all the way back in 1975, wherein the hottest months hosts the biggest titles — marketed aggressively to theatergoers. It seemed like those days were behind us, and the streaming age had finally overtaken the days when movies could be events. So thank goodness for “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”

Things aren’t entirely rosy at cinemas again (and Hollywood writ large is a mess), but things are improving at the box office with those July 21 releases helping to massively goose theatrical business, picking up where...

Image
This article contains discussions/references of discrimination, racism, violence, death, and animal death

Westerns movies are often full of violence and dark themes, filmmakers of that genre have also made sure that some of their movies are suitable for kids. Cinematic tales of the "Wild West," typically set in the western United States during the mid to late 19th century, have enthralled audiences for more than a century. Whether true accounts, myths or fictional stories, viewers are enraptured by tales of a sheriff or a lone gunslinger ridding a small and friendly town from cattle rustlers, murderers, thieves or a greedy land baron.

Western movies for adults are renown for graphic violence, vulgarity, sex, heavy alcohol use. Many westerns have also aged badly as some of its narratives mistreat women and Indigenous Americans (which goes as far back to the first western made in 1899). While racial and gender stereotypes have...

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish Soundtrack Guide – Every Song & When It Plays
Image
Puss In Boots: The Last Wish has been praised for its innovative animation, intriguing plot, and star-studded voice cast, but its soundtrack should not be overlooked. Puss In Boots: The Last Wish came over a decade after the first film, a spinoff of the Shrek films, and featured a score by Heitor Pereira, who is best known for his work as the composer of the Despicable Me franchise, replacing Henry Jackman who did the first movie’s score in 2011. Puss In Boots The Last Wish Voice Cast & Character Guide – What The Actors Look Like In Real Life
Image
The animated sequel Puss in Boots: The Last Wish managed to top its predecessor in many ways with help from a star-studded voice cast portraying new and returning fairy tale characters. Released in 2022, the movie directly follows the 2011 Puss in Boots feature film (as well as a 2012 animated short and animated series running from 2015 to 2018), which itself was a spinoff from the Shrek franchise. Like its predecessor, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. This was befitting of its lead voice cast, which included one Oscar-winning actor and three additional Oscar nominees.

Only two of the main voice actors from the original Puss in Boots returned to reprise their roles, one of them being Antonio Banderas as the titular swashbuckling cat. In the sequel, Puss faces a number of foes, including a very deadly main villain, as he seeks out the...
