Creator of Apple TV+'s 81% Rotten Tomatoes Sci-Fi Epic Reveals a Major Season 2 Script Update
Image
The first season of Dark Matter premiered on Apple TV+ more than one year ago, bringing the famous novel from author Blake Crouch to life with stunning realism. Fans were surprised to learn that the show was renewed for a second season shortly after the conclusion of the first, but not for lack of success from the debut season. Dark Matter Season 1 adapts the entirety of Crouch’s sci-fi novel of the same name, meaning Season 2 will head into uncharted waters and tell an entirely new story in the world of Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton). Production on Season 2 has been going on since earlier this year, and Crouch recently took to his personal Instagram to provide a status update on Season 2, confirming that the team is “deep into filming” and that the scripts are 499 pages.

When Dark Matter was announced, fans were pleased to learn that Crouch was not only...

‘Dark Matter’ Season 2: Apple TV Is Sitting on a Goldmine but They’re Too Afraid to Exploit It to Its Fullest.
Image
When I first witnessed Dark Matter unfold on Apple TV+, I found myself immersed in the brilliant world of alternate realities shown, and only one question came to my mind: “What If?”. The series is based on a novel by Blake Crouch, and follows the story of Jason Dessen, a physicist, who is portrayed masterfully by Joel Edgerton.

He travels through the different multiverses where he could lead his life. The finale showed him reuniting with his family, which left viewers in hope for more. The series has been renewed for a second season, and it promises to dive even deeper into the multiverse of different possibilities.

The need for a deeper, more intense narrative in Dark Matter season 2

I think Apple TV+ doesn’t realize the potential of this storyline and needs to make the second season even more intense, and that’s when it will do justice to the narrative.

What's the best place for must-watch dramas with top-tier casts?
Image
From ‘Severance’ to ‘The Morning Show,’ Apple TV+ is all about big stars and bold storytelling.

The first time I realized Apple TV+ wasn’t messing around was when “The Morning Show” dropped. A series built around Jennifer Aniston - one of the most famous TV actors of all time - and Reese Witherspoon, a full-on movie star? Not bad! That’s what put Apple TV+ on the map, and since then, it’s been rolling out one high-profile drama after another. From mind-bending sci-fi like “Severance” and “Silo” to convincing auteur director Alfonso Cuarón to do his first ever TV show as writer and director for the platform in “Disclaimer,” Apple TV+ has carved out a niche as the streamer for prestige, high-concept storytelling with A-list talent. If you want TV shows that feel like event television, Apple TV+ is the place.

'Dark Matter' Season 2 Begins Filming With New Set Image Featuring Joel Edgerton
Image
Apple TV+ has become the premiere home for all the best sci-fi shows, and one of the streamer’s most successful creations from 2024 was Dark Matter. Based on the novel of the same name by Blake Crouch, Dark Matter tells the story of Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a man who is kidnapped one night and wakes up in a reality he doesn’t recognize. Dark Matter, which also stars Jennifer Connelly and Alice Braga, was such a success that Apple TV+ renewed it for a second season despite the first season adapting Crouch’s novel in its entirety. Crouch just delivered a major update on his personal Instagram, announcing that Season 2 of Dark Matter is officially in production, while also sharing the first behind-the-scenes images from the show.

Craving a spy thriller TV show? Check out these 7 new series

From espionage to action sequences, these shows bring fresh stories to the genre.

Spy thriller TV shows have had a nice resurgence of late with a new one seeming to appear every month. Well, I’m here for it because – when done right – there’s nothing cooler than dropping into the world of espionage. One of my favorite shows of 2024 was “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” (even if things got a little weird at the end), and now, with the release of Apple TV+’s “Prime Target,” I thought it a great idea to count down the best new (meaning first season only) spy/espionage thrillers from the last year that you can stream right now. Let’s get to it!

Top 7 new spy thriller TV shows on streaming right now:

No. 7: ‘Prime Target’

No. 6: ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’

No. 5: ‘Dark Matter’

No. 4: ‘The Sympathizer’

9 Best Sci-Fi Shows of 2024
Image
The science fiction genre had a banner year in 2024 and it’s time to look back on the best of the best.

This year brought us a handful of new “Star Wars” shows that took the canon to new eras, a devastating finale to Netflix’s beloved animated series “Arcane” and reintroduced fans to the classic X-Men in “X-Men ’97.” It was an embarrassment of riches for fans of the genre.

These are the nine best sci-fi TV shows that made their mark on the year.

“X-Men ’97” (Credit: Marvel Studios) “X-Men ’97”

There have been plenty of good-to-great reboots of beloved series in the past few years. But there’s something about “X-Men ’97,” perhaps owing to its animated origins, that feels as though these new episodes are picking up right where the beloved 1990s show left off. And that’s no easy feat. While the animation has definitely improved,...

Dark Matter Season 2's New Realities Can Build On Apple TV+ Sci-Fi Show's Most Underrated Book Change
Image
With so much going on in Dark Matter season 1, it can be difficult to miss some of the alterations and additions made to the 2016 novel of the same name, but season 2 of the Apple TV+ adaptation can excitingly build on one of the most interesting tweaks made to the other realities in Blake Crouch's source material. Although some Dark Matter book changes take the form of completely new storylines and characters, others are simply augmenting what's already there. The story's premise allows for even further exploration of one tweak in particular.

According to Screen, Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly are returning to the Dark Matter season 2 cast. This isn't completely surprising, but the ending of Dark Matter season 1 brought their story to a pretty satisfying conclusion, so how their arcs will be continued becomes incredibly compelling. Joel Edgerton's adventures through the multiverse as Jason Dessen were at the heart of season 1's story,...

Dark Matter Season 2's Best New Villain Was Already Introduced In Season 1
Image
Joel Edgerton's Jason2 is Dark Matter season 1's primary villain, but his redemption at the end of the run opens the door for an already-established character to step in as season 2's antagonist. Edgerton's role as the leader of the Dark Matter cast called for him to play various iterations of the same character, but he wasn't the only actor asked to do just that. Dark Matter's multiversal premise means most members of the cast need to double or triple up on their performances, which has quickly separated the Apple TV+ adaption from the 2016 sci-fi novel by Blake Crouch.

Moving forward, Dark Matter's book changes are shaping up to pay off big time when the show returns. By the end of Dark Matter season 1, the source matter is exhausted. However, Crouch's return as the Dark Matter showrunner has already benefitted the TV show, as the alterations he has implemented...

Grotesquerie and the 12 worst shows of 2024 (so far)
Image
As we move closer to the end of 2024, now is the perfect time to look back at some of the worst shows of the year. It has been a fruitful year for TV watchers, particularly those who prefer to stream their series. We’ve seen an interesting mix of new shows and the anticipated return of old favorites. Still, this doesn’t mean they have all been winners.

Before we share which shows have been the most disappointing, let’s give recognition to some of the many series we’ve enjoyed the most. At the top of my list, I have Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent, Prime Video’s Fallout, and Hulu’s The Bear season 3. I know Netflix’s Baby Reindeer also received a lot of attention, as well as the returning Prime Video favorite, The Boys with season 4. Which shows have made it to your favorites list so far?...

It’s a Shame – Silo, Dark Matter and 3 Other Shows That Apple TV Forgot to Promote and These Can Put Netflix’s Best Shows to Shame
Image
Since Netflix shook up the film and series world, tons of other streaming options have popped up. Over time, they’ve all developed their own original content, which has helped each platform stand out. The problem is that Apple TV+ seems to have dropped the ball here. Sure, creating original shows is great, but they still need to be promoted.

Even so, Apple’s streaming service is still seen by a lot of movie buffs as one of the best — if not the best — when it comes to quality. Their series even outshine many of Netflix’s big hits, yet hardly anyone knows about them. These are shows that definitely deserve more public recognition.

Apple TV+’s ‘Dark Matter’ Gears Up for Season 2 Filming in Chicago This February
Jennifer Connelly and Joel Edgerton in Dark Matter (2024)
Dark Matter, Apple TV+’s thrilling sci-fi series, is set to return for a season 2, with filming slated to begin in Chicago this February. According to sources, production will likely extend through late spring or early summer of 2025. The show, starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, has already captured the imagination of fans worldwide with its mind-bending narrative, and the Chicago-based production promises to add even more depth and intensity to the franchise’s unfolding story.

Chicago as a Sci-Fi Landscape in Season 1 of Dark Matter

The first season of Dark Matter premiered globally on Apple TV+ in May 2024, receiving praise for its compelling blend of emotional storytelling and thrilling alternate-reality themes. Filmed across several iconic Chicago locations, including Montrose Harbor and Downtown Chicago, the show has made the Windy City an integral part of its universe. Dark Matter Season 2 Repeats A Risky Adaptation Move By Another Blake Crouch Show From 9 Years Ago
Image
Dark Matter's renewal is exciting, but it also means season 2 of the multiverse show could follow a similar trajectory that doomed another adaption of a book by the same writer. Blake Crouch is a renowned sci-fi author, and while only two shows have been created from his literary works so far, there is far more potential to come from his impressive back catalog. Although changes were made to 2016's Dark Matter book for season 1, the overall story remained the same in Apple TV+'s version. However, Dark Matter season 2's confirmation calls for a very different production process.

Joel Edgerton led the cast of Dark Matter season 1 as Jason Dessen. Although the inaugural run of episodes ends with the possibility of Edgerton's return in season 2, the story's continuation would also largely make sense without his presence. Dark Matter season 1's ending implies the focus will shift to other characters.

Dark Matter season 2 brings exciting possibilities for the Dessen family's interdimensional journey in an awe-inspiring universe. Author Blake Crouch returns as showrunner, expanding the story beyond the book's open ending to explore new and familiar characters. The mysterious Futuristic Chicago universe may hold the key to the Dessens' future, setting the stage for uneasy reunions and romantic tension.

With Dark Matter season 2 now confirmed to be happening, the Apple TV+ show can continue the story of its rich world of characters, including in which corner of the multiverse the Dessen family will settle. Maybe Reconsider: Apple TV+ Sci-Fi Show Gets Mixed Reaction From VFX Artists For Key Scene Choice

VFX artists had mixed reviews on the snow scene in Dark Matter, praising the rendering of the snow but critiquing the fluffy appearance. Season 2 of Dark Matter will introduce more challenging VFX with new and existing universes explored by the characters. Where Can Dark Matter Go In Season 2? There’s at Least One Possible Corridor
Image
Just like those Jason Dessens from all over the multiverse, the Apple TV+ hit Dark Matter is replicating.

Yup. The critically acclaimed science-fiction hit was recently renewed.

Now, there’s just one big catch. The first season was based entirely on Blake Crouch’s 2016 book.

(Apple TV+)

Dark Matter follows Jason Dessen (played by Joel Edgerton), a physicist, professor, and family man who quickly is abducted and becomes a captive of the multiverse.

He spends the rest of the season experiencing lives he could have lived while attempting to get back to his home world and his family.

So that means the new season, whenever it finally arrives on the streaming timetable, will have to be created out of thin air.

As viewers of modern TV are acutely aware, this venturing away from the written source material can be a hit-or-miss proposition.

Sometimes, it works.

(Apple TV+)

Then again, sometimes it doesn’t.

Dark Matter Is Getting A Second Season On Apple TV+, But What Could It Be About?
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Dark Matter."

I recently finished reading Blake Crouch's mind-bending sci-fi novel "Dark Matter," which was adapted into an Apple TV+ show earlier this year. I haven't watched the show yet (I'm planning to catch up with it shortly), but we've called it "the best sci-fi series in years" and that praise makes sense, considering the show is apparently a very faithful adaptation of the largely excellent book. Last Friday, Apple announced that the show will be getting a second season -- a somewhat curious decision, given that the book ends in a place where they easily could have delivered a satisfying story and called it a day.

At the end of the novel, the unwitting multiverse traveler Jason Dessen (played by Joel Edgerton in the show) finally manages to reunite with his real family in his original universe, but he and his wife (Jennifer Connelly...

A bright spot for “Dark Matter”: Apple TV+ has renewed the sci-fi series for a second season.

It continues: “The series follows Jason Dessen (played by Edgerton), a physicist, professor and family man who — one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago — is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Apple TV+ Renews Dark Matter for Season 2
Image
Dark Matter, the Apple TV+ science fiction thriller starring Joel Edgerton, has been renewed for Season 2. The miniseries that's no longer a miniseries is based on the novel of the same name by Blake Crouch, who was also commissioned as a showrunner by Apple. It arrived in May 2024 on the platform, and quickly garnered audience acclaim. It was only a matter of time before Apple and Sony would see the potential for a follow-up.

Crouch announced the unexpected renewal with very kind words for the series' genre-loving audience:

"Thanks to everyone who tuned-in for season one book fans and new fans and of course our partners at Apple and Sony, my amazing producing partner, Matt Tolmach, our tremendous cast and crew, and the great city of Chicagoyou were so good to us. In the process of writing and filming season one, we discovered that there's so much more story to tell,...

Dark Matter gets renewed for a second season at Apple TV+
Image
The first season of the Joel Edgerton/Jennifer Connelly sci-fi thriller Dark Matter became a huge hit for Apple TV+. In the review from our own Alex Maidy, he glowed, “There are so many great angles this story takes that are unconventional for a series like this that discovering them from episode to episode enhances the experience of this story. Based on the cast alone, Dark Matter is worth checking out. Apple TV+ continues to excel as a home for creative expansions in the science fiction genre, but Dark Matter may be their best project since Severance. […] I cannot think of a better way to parse out this great tale that will have audiences theorizing week to week about what will come next.”

On the heels of the Dark Matter edge-of-your-seat season one finale, Apple TV+ today announced a season two renewal for the sci-fi thriller, which has been hailed as “top-notch science fiction,...

Apple TV+ has renewed Dark Matter season 2. The science fiction show was created by Blake Crouch based on his own novel. The show stars Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly.

Dark Matter has been officially renewed. The Apple TV+ show, which was created by Blake Crouch, is based on Crouch's science fiction novel of the same name, which was published in 2016. It stars Joel Edgerton as physicist Jason Dessen, who is kidnapped into an alternate reality by a different version of himself. The cast of the show also includes Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, and Oakes Fegley. Because the show is based on a self-contained novel, Dark Matter season 2 was not always a guarantee.

‘Dark Matter’ Renewed For Season 2 At Apple TV+
Image
Apple TV+ viewers might get the chance to finally find out how Dark Matter’s interdimensional travel works and which universe the main characters ended up in after the streamer renewed the sci-fi drama for a second season.

The tech company has handed Dark Matter, which stars Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, a sophomore season after its nine-episode, first season ended in June.

However, Blake Crouch, author of the book that the series is based on and creator, showrunner and executive producer of the series, will have to come up with new stories as there is no source material on the bookstands.

Dark Matter, which comes from Sony Pictures Television, follows Jason Dessen, (played by Edgerton), a physicist, professor and family man who, one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago, is abducted into an alternate version of his life. I Know He Was Joking, But Joel Edgerton's Dark Matter Season 2 Idea Actually Makes Sense
Image
Joel Edgerton's playful idea for Dark Matter season 2 addresses an important cliffhanger from the finale. The potential return of Ryan to Jason's original world makes addressing the multiple Jasons storyline inevitable. Detective Mason's unresolved arc in Dark Matter season 1 sets the stage for a larger role in season 2.

I genuinely love Joel Edgerton's Dark Matter season 2 idea, regardless of how playful he made his story suggestion for a possible follow-up. Edgerton led the Dark Matter season 1 cast for every episode, portraying many iterations of Jason Dessen as the main version of his character tried to reclaim his family from a multiversal doppelgnger. Interestingly, Dark Matter season 1's ending provides the potential for the story to be continued, despite the source material now being exhausted. However, the finale of both the book and the show does share one massive cliffhanger.

As a huge fan of the 2016 Blake Crouch novel,...

Joel Edgerton Is Dead Wrong About Dark Matter Season 2
Image
Joel Edgerton's stance on a potential Dark Matter season 2 contradicts the unresolved cliffhangers in the first season's ending. The show's departure from the source material creates open-ended storylines that may never be resolved if the series is not renewed. Dark Matter's decision to set up potential future seasons with unresolved storylines risks frustrating viewers if the show does not continue.

Dark Matter season 2 isn't confirmed, but the show's star has made a confusing claim that he'd be satisfied with how the inaugural run ended if the show didn't return. As the leader of the Dark Matter cast, Joel Edgerton's Jason Dessen was at the heart of the saga, with many versions of the character popping up throughout the multiverse. While Dark Matter made changes to Blake Crouch's 2016 novel, the adaptation was largely faithful and made several tasteful additions to enhance the narrative. However, Dark Matter season 1's...

Dark Matter Showrunner Confirms What We All Suspected About the Ending
Image
Dark Matter left some aspects of its ending on an ambiguous note, but new details have thankfully emerged to clarify the fate of Joel Edgerton's Jason Dessen.

Apple TV+'s hit sci-fi show recently came to a close, expanding upon the original story conjured by the book of the same name by pushing its multiversal concept into overdrive.

The series' final episode saw Jason's many versions allowing the original Jason to be with Daniela and Charlie, putting their selfish desires aside to allow the family to be at peace.

Dark Matter Season 1's Ending Forgets To Resolve 1 Of The Adaptation's Original Storylines
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for the Dark Matter season 1 finale, "Entanglement."

Dark Matter season 1 leaves some new storylines unresolved, including Detective Mason's investigation. A potential Dark Matter season 2 could explore the fates of new and old characters, and revive the tension between Detective Mason and Jason2. Dark Matter season 2 needs to handle Jason2's redemption carefully, avoiding a violent resolution with Detective Mason.

Dark Matter season 1 ended in almost exactly the same way as the 2016 novel, but one of the additional storylines added in by Apple TV+ was seemingly abandoned as the story drew to a close. Joel Edgerton led the Dark Matter cast as Jason Dessen, with his character(s) following an incredibly similar arc to his book counterpart(s). Blake Crouch, who wrote the original book on which the show was based, also returned as the showrunner and lead scriptwriter. Crouch made several changes to the Dark Matter book when making the show,...

10 Best TV Shows Like Apple TV+'s Dark Matter
Image
Dark Matter and other similar sci-fi shows explore the concept of alternate universes and the multiverse. Shows like Severance, Silo, and Westworld don't necessarily share the concept of alternate realities, but tonally, they fit right in with Dark Matter. What If...?, For All Mankind, and Dark explore vast timelines and multiverses, pairing their themese well with Dark Matter.

Apple TV+'s Dark Matter is a mind-bending science-fiction series featuring a grounded approach to the multiverse. Adapted from Blake Crouch's Dark Matter novel, the series sees Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) plucked out of his own universe and replaced by a version of himself from a different universe. Through the Box, this story's means of traveling through the multiverse, Jason1 must find a way back to his own universe and to reunite with his family and save them from his identical impostor, Jason2, before it's too late.

While Dark Matter season 1 has concluded with unanswered questions,...

Apple's Mind-Bending Multiverse Drama Is The Best Sci-Fi Series In Years
Image
(Welcome to Under the Radar, a column where we spotlight specific movies, shows, trends, performances, or scenes that caught our eye and deserved more attention ... but otherwise flew under the radar. In this edition: the high-concept Apple TV+ original series "Dark Matter," the Lily Gladstone-starring indie "Fancy Dance," and the South Korean horror movie "Exhuma" stood out from the pack in June.)

Have rumors of cinema's demise been greatly exaggerated? I make no claims about understanding the fine art of box office prognostication, preferring to leave that to the experts who actually know what they're talking about (such as /Film's very own Ryan Scott). But after months of doom and gloom over general audiences failing to show up for several high-profile movies in relatively short order, it was difficult not to fear the worst and chalk up 2024 to another lost year for moviegoers and theater owners alike. The past few weeks,...

Dark Matter Star Dayo Okeniyi On Playing Multiple Leightons & Collaborating With Joel Edgerton
Image
Jason Dessen navigates an alternate reality in Dark Matter, fighting to return home and protect his family. Blake Crouch's novel adaptation features actors playing multiple versions of characters, highlighting nuanced differences. Dayo Okeniyi discusses his approach to portraying two distinct Leightons, sharing how he collaborated with Joel Edgerton on character dynamics.

Jason Dessen, a college professor and family man, is sent on an emotional whirlwind in Dark Matter when he is abducted and dumped into an alternate reality. Desperate to find a way home, Jason realizes an alternate version of himself has taken over his life, putting the life he built and his family in danger. As Jason does everything he can to return home, the alternate Jason learns that this life isn't all he imagined. When Jason finally finds his way home, things become even more complicated than either Jason could have imagined.

I Hope Dark Matter Never Addresses The Finale's Best Jason Mystery
Image
Spoilers are ahead for Dark Matter (2024) season 1.

Dark Matter's ambiguous finale leaves the audience questioning which Jason ends up with Daniela, reflecting the show's themes of infinite possibilities and identity. The showrunner confirms the intention was to follow the same Jason Dessen, but the open-ended conclusion adds depth to the philosophical questions raised. Some argue that Dark Matter should remain a one-off limited series, as its story feels complete, and exploring the many worlds and the Box further may not be necessary.

The Dark Matter finale leaves its best Jason Dessen mystery pretty open-ended and I hope it remains ambiguous. Based on a novel of the same name, Apple TV+'s Dark Matter significantly changes Blake Crouch's book, though the basic premise remains the same. In the nine-episode series, Joel Edgerton plays multiple versions of Jason Dessen across many realities. The first Jason we meet is a (mostly...

Dark Matter Is Playing A Dangerous Game With These Season 2 Teases
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Dark Matter season 1.

Joel Edgerton perfectly embodies the role of Jason Dessen in Dark Matter, enhancing the viewing experience. Apple TV+ takes risks with Dark Matter book changes, but the additions elevate the show's appeal. Continuing Dark Matter into a second season without source material may jeopardize the story's integrity.

Dark Matter is one of the best live-action adaptations I've ever seen, but the show's potential future could bring with it enormous risks. I find Joel Edgerton to be the perfect actor to lead the Dark Matter cast, as he aligns very closely with my mental image of Jason Dessen from the source material. Although there were several Dark Matter book changes made by Apple TV+ during the adaptation process, the additions only heightened the experience for me. That being said, the TV show wasn't afraid to make other bold changes that I'm worried could also hurt the story.

Dark Matter's Multiverse Compared To Other Movie & TV Shows
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Dark Matter season 1.

Dark Matter's multiverse approach differs, focusing on dread and tension rather than superhero glamor. The show borrows elements from other sci-fi properties like Rick & Morty, Star Trek, and Doctor Who. Dark Matter has a largely non-optimistic narrative and focuses on the consequences of a character's actions.

Dark Matter is one of a slew of multiverse stories of recent times, and it compares with its contemporaries in some very interesting ways. Apple TV+ made changes to Blake Crouch's Dark Matter novel to create the show, with the 2016 book actually predating the current multiverse boom. The sci-trope is one that's been used for decades, but various projects are always finding new ways to put a fresh spin on the sub-genre. Dark Matter's approach to the multiverse borrows from other live-action properties, but it also injects new life into the plot device.
