Smallville's Blue Lantern Was a Bold Choice Too Daring for DC's Main Continuity
Image
The Smallville comic continuation introduced a Blue Lantern version of Nightwing, with Barbara Gordon taking on the role and inspiring hope, just like her male counterpart. Barbara Gordon's resilience and ability to overcome challenges, such as being paralyzed in the infamous Killing Joke storyline, make her a fitting choice for the Blue Lantern ring. Barbara's role as a Blue Lantern even inspires Batman and reflects her desire for a better future for Gotham City. However, in the main continuity, iconic heroes like Batman and Superman rarely wield Lantern rings, making this a bold decision for the Smallville continuity.

Smallville was highly influential for introducing a generation of CW viewers of Superman's origin story, as well as many other notable DC characters, during its ten-season run. Even after the TV show concluded, the Smallville continuity continued to be influential in comic book form, introducing a prototype of iconic villain Batman Who Laughs,...

Lars Eidinger Is a Conductor on the Brink in ‘Dying’ (Exclusive Berlin Trailer)
Image
Ready for another deliciously outré performance from Lars Eidinger, everybody’s favorite German arthouse weirdo (known for his work in Personal Shopper, Clouds of Sils Maria, White Noise, and on and on)? Well, strap in for Sterben (Dying) from German director Matthias Glasner.

In the exclusive first trailer from The Match Factory (see below), Eidinger plays Tom, a Berlin conductor with more than a few personal issues to deal with.

Dying is a rare new feature from Glasner who, unlike his prolific star, has kept his filmography tight. (His last feature was 2012’s Gnade.) Judging by the trailer, and Glasner’s previous work, including 2006 Silver Bear winner The Free Will, Dying looks like another powerful mix of melodrama, wry humor and philosophical ponderings about the “big questions” of life and, given the title, of death.

“The name of the piece… is ‘Dying’,” a high-strung composer, played by Robert Gwisdek, instructs the orchestra.

Abbott Elementary Season 3’s Best Plot Changes The Show's Entire Formula (For The Better)
Image
Janine's new job in the school district shakes up the workplace sitcom setup, introducing new co-workers and potential love interest Manny. Janine's struggles and challenges in her new role highlight the show's commitment to realistic depictions of issues like educational underfunding. Janine's job in the district connects back to Abbott Elementary, emphasizing the importance of the work she is doing and her ongoing connection to her old colleagues.

While Abbott Elementary season 3 sending Janine away came as a surprise, this twist is the best thing that could have happened to the series. Now that Superstore has ended and Blockbuster was canceled after one season, Abbott Elementary is one of the last remaining workplace sitcoms. The mockumentary follows the entire quirky staff of the eponymous Philadelphia public school as they navigate underfunding and other issues that get in the way of education, but creator Quinta Brunson’s character is the heart of Abbott Elementary.

Abbott Elementary’s Season 4 Renewal Means The Show Won’t Need To Rush Janine's Most Interesting Story
Image
The news of Abbott Elementary Season 4 means Janine can continue her job plot in Season 3 without rushing her return to the school. By allowing Janine to stay at the school district until the finale, the show can explore the comedic and heartfelt struggles she faces in her new role. The renewal of Abbott Elementary enhances the story of Janine and Gregory, giving their relationship more time to develop and making their eventual reunion more satisfying.

The news that Abbott Elementary season 4 is officially happening is great for Janine’s school district storyline as this can allow the sitcom to take its time with the pivotal plot. Abbott Elementary won over both critics and audiences when the show debuted in 2021. A workplace sitcom, Abbott Elementary used a mockumentary approach to chronicle the successes and struggles of the titular underfunded Philadelphia public school. Creator Quinta Brunson starred as Janine, an idealistic young...

Abbott Elementary Season 3 Episode 3 Review: Gregory's Garden Goofballs
Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter, William Stanford Davis, Tyler James Williams, Chris Perfetti, Quinta Brunson, and Janelle James in Abbott Elementary (2021)
The word of the day is bureaucracy, and Janine has gotten a face full of it.

This week on Abbott Elementary Season 3 Episode 3, our favorite teachers have found themselves in some tricky conflicts.

We also got some out-of-character moments for more than one of our friends at Abbott.

The episode kicks off with a strange revelation -- Tariq is dating the mother of one of Barbara Howard's students. We're not sure how to feel about this since it means Tariq will probably be around the school more often.

Can't we leave the past behind us? Clearly not.

Barbara starts mentoring Tariq throughout the episode, which, on the surface, is super weird, but maybe that's naive.

Barbara's soft spot for her students is no secret, so why wouldn't she want to encourage Tariq to build a real relationship with his pseudo-step-child?

Even if he is being ridiculous about it.

Tariq...

Can Doctor Who Ever Make Up for Treating Past Companions Badly?
Image
In January 2024, Fourth Doctor companion Louise Jameson returned to Doctor Who in the short promotional film Leela vs the Time War for the release of the Season 15 Blu-ray boxset. It showed Jameson’s character on Gallifrey in the final moments of the Time War being threatened with extermination by the Daleks. “This is not how this ends,” says Leela, before transporting herself to the safety of the Tardis.

As reported by RadioTimes.com, writer/director Pete McTighe said at a BFI screening of 1977 episode “Horror of Fang Rock”, that he saw the new scene as “an opportunity to right [the] wrong” of Jameson’s character’s original exit, in which Leela was hurriedly married off to a Gallifreyan Time Lord.

McTighe has written increasingly ambitious promotional films for these series releases with original actors returning to play their roles, though the complexity of producing them means they won’t be done for every boxset.

Breaking Baz: Christopher Nolan Lauded By UK Premier Rishi Sunak, Who Cracks A Few Risqué Gags At Prestigious BFI Fellowship Event
Image
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was the surprise warm-up act at a prestigious film industry event in London on Wednesday night that saw Oppenheimer director — and BAFTA and Oscar front runner — Christopher Nolan receive the British Film Institute Fellowship Award for his outstanding contribution to cinema.

The premier hailed Nolan — whose credits also include the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and Dunkirk — as “undoubtedly one of our preeminent filmmakers.”

However, before doing so, he delivered quips with an aplomb that had guests seated in the ballroom of London’s Rosewood Hotel in stitches.

“Politics is showbusiness for ugly people,” Sunak declared. The room liked that one, even though the line’s a golden oldie.

“So, I was pleasantly surprised,” he continued, “when I was recently mistaken for Timothée Chalamet.”

Then with a well-timed pause, he added, “At least, I think that’s why they were shouting ‘Wonka’ at me.”

The room...

Image
Barbara Gordon's absence from the Birds of Prey team in the first arc of the latest volume was due to the fact that she would end up dead every time she joined the mission to save Sin from the Amazons. The team is determined to find out who is trying to kill Barbara and put an end to it once and for all. Black Canary and Cassandra Cain vow to protect Barbara Gordon, ensuring that nobody is going to kill Barbara as long as she's protected by them.

Warning! Contains Spoilers For Birds of Prey #6!

The Spirit of Bruce Timm's Justice League Lives on in 1 Underrated DC Team
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Birds of Prey #6!

The Birds of Prey are switching up their team for each mission, making it harder for villains to plan against them. This new tactic puts the Birds of Prey on par with the Justice League and Titans in terms of adaptability. Black Canary is determined to protect Barbara Gordon, leading to the formation of a new version of the Birds of Prey.

The spirit of Bruce Timm's storytelling is alive and well thanks to the Birds of Prey, an underrated alternative to the Justice League. Bruce Timm is best known for his contributions to the DC Comics animated universe and television franchise during the 90s and 2000s. One of his most popular series was Justice League Unlimited, where the League would keep a rotating roster of heroes, constantly switching things up for each mission.

DC's most underrated team looks to borrow that same...
