Oscar Winner ‘I’m Still Here’ Gets Shout-Out as Exec From Brazil’s Globo Touts Theatrical Window

Conecta Fiction & Entertainment, taking place in Cuenca, Spain, this week, may be mostly a TV industry gathering, but Brazil’s Oscar-winning movie I’m Still Here, directed by Walter Salles and starring Fernanda Torres, got a big shout-out at the event on Wednesday.

Alex Medeiros, head of drama, documentaries & film at Brazilian media and entertainment giant Grupo Globo’s streaming service Globoplay, appeared at Conecta in a session entitled “American Commissioners Uncovered,” and he touted the movie’s success. Highlighting that the story of a family broken apart by dictatorship was the first movie from the company after it merged its two film brands under the Globo Filmes banner, he said: “We’re extremely happy and proud that we won Brazil’s first-ever Oscar for best international feature.”

Brazilian powerhouse Gullane registers for Cao Hamburger’s inspirational drama ‘School Without Walls’

Exclusive: Brazilian filmmaker Cao Hamburger, whose credits include Berlinale 2007 title The Year My Parents Went On Vacation, has lined up the feature School Without Walls with Brazilian production powerhouse Gullane, Portugal’s Ukbar Filmes and France’s Playtime Group.

Leading Brazilian actor Julio Andrade, one of Brazil’s most celebrated actors, stars in the film about the inspirational headteacher at a public school in Heliopolis, one of the largest favelas in Brazil.

School Without Walls is being backed by Globo Filmes and Telecine and will start shooting this summer.

A few weeks after Walter Salles’s “I’m Still Here” made history as the first-ever Brazilian film to win an Oscar, the country continues its great momentum with “Raul Seixas: Let Me Sing,” the first Brazilian series to ever play France’s Series Mania, the largest TV event in Europe. Like Salles’s film, the project is an original production of Globoplay, the freemium streaming service of Brazilian media giant Globo, and tells the story of one of Brazil’s greatest music stars, Raul Seixas.

The eight-episode series will have its world premiere in the International Panorama Competition, where it will run for best series, director, actor, actress, and the Student Award. “Raul Seixas: Let Me Sing: is created by Paulo Morelli (“City of Men”), who co-directs with his son, Pedro Morelli (“Brotherhood”), under banner O2 Filmes, where Paulo Morelli partners with Andrea Barata Ribeiro and Fernando Mereilles.

Brazil’s Gullane Steps Firmly Into Distribution With Gullane+, Lines Up Julio Andrade for Cao Hamburger’s ‘School Without Borders’ (Exclusive)

Top Brazilian production company Gullane Entretenimento is ramping up efforts to widen its scope through Gullane+, the company’s fast-growing distribution arm. Partners Fabiano and Caio Gullane will now focus on production, with Débora Ivanov taking over the distribution operation. Gullane+ inherits the company’s rich catalog of over 40 projects, including Karim Aïnouz’s “Mariner of the Mountains” and Laís Bodanzky’s classic “Brainstorm,” as well as featuring a slate of new exciting projects by André Ristum and Flavia Moraes.

Speaking with Variety out of Berlin, where Gullane is heavily promoting its distribution efforts, Fabiano Gullane said the three partners always “really liked the distribution part of the process” and realized they could employ their many years of expertise in handling some of their titles. The 2024 International Emmy Awards took place Monday night in New York, honoring the finest shows made outside of the United States, with nominees coming from 21 countries, per The Hollywood Reporter.

The best in global television was honored in New York on Monday night at the 2024 International Emmy Awards, with winners picked across nominees from 21 countries.

The big winners on the night were Drops of God winning best drama series, Timothy Spall winning best actor, Aokbab-Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying winning best actress, División Palermo winning best comedy and Liebes Kind winning best miniseries.

In the best drama category, Apple TV+’s French-American-Japanese manga adaptation Drops of God, produced by Legendary Television, won out against 1980s-set Australian series The Newsreader; the Amazon Prime Video Argentina espionage thriller Yosi, the Regretful Spy; and the Disney+/Hotstar series The Night Manager, an Indian adaptation of the 2016 BBC show of the same name.

British acting legend Timothy Spall went into the ceremony as favorite in the best actor category, nominated for his turn in the BBC true-crime tale The Sixth Commandment, and duly walked away with the award.

French-Japanese drama series “Les Gouttes de Dieu [Drops of God],” Argentinian comedy series “División Palermo” and actor Timothy Spall were among the winners at the 52nd annual International Emmy Awards.

Hosted by stand-up comedian Vir Das, the ceremony took place Monday at the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel. This year, 21 countries were represented across 14 categories and 56 nominees.

Streamers Are Pushing Out Broadcasters in the International TV Awards Arena

Streaming giants are a force to be reckoned with in the race for the 52nd International Emmys, organized by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, as they approach the awards on Nov. 25 in New York.

Nominees for drama series include Season 2 of Prime Video’s Argentine thriller “Yosi, the Regretful Spy,” based on the real story of an Argentine police agent who infiltrates a Jewish community. Spain’s Zeta Studios, the company behind Netflix hit “Elite,” has partnered with leading Brazilian indie Conspiração to create “Bajo Presión,” a Spanish remake of the hit Brazilian TV medical drama, “Sob Pressão”(“Under Pressure”).

Set in the emergency room of a public hospital, Brazil’s “Under Pressure” hit a sweet spot, mixing large suspense – about the fate of patients, and the series’ long term relationship – and a bracing social realism. The story revolves around a surgeon (Julio Andrade) and doctor (Marjorie Estiano) battling not only for their relationship but also against the severe lack of hospital resources. International Emmys Nominations: Three Countries Vying For Both Drama & Comedy Series Awards

Just days after the 2024 Primetime Emmys were handed out, we have the nominees for the 52nd International Emmy Awards. See the full list of 14 categories below.

The shows vying for the Drama Series prize are Australia’s The Newsreader, Argentina’s Yosi, the Regretful Spy, France’s Drops of God and India’s The Night Manager.
