John Carpenter Returns for Gunship’s Claymation Music Video Sequel ‘Tech Noir 2’
Image
Synthwave outfit Gunship is back with a claymation sequel ten years after unleashing 80s-inspired retrosynth cult classic “Tech Noir.”

Paying tribute to classic ’80s and ’90s genre blockbuster culture, the new single and claymation video is appropriately titled “Tech Noir 2” and reunites fans with the band’s vivid retro-futuristic world, pushing their audiovisual storytelling into heartwarming territory.

The video’s story follows “a young girl whose obsession with arcade glory accidentally leads to her baby brother’s abduction by the arch-villain from the original Tech Noir video. To rescue him, she must venture into a video game world and channel the power of legendary gaming heroes. As an added touch, fans who won Gunship’s online competition will spot their initials immortalised in the in-video arcade high-score table.”

The original video was directed by acclaimed animator Lee Hardcastle and featured horror master John Carpenter, who lent his voice to the opening monologue.

‘The ABCs of Death’: How Ant Timpson and Tim League Made a Midnight Masterclass With 26 Horror Shorts
Image
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

This September, we’re celebrating Back to School Night with four midnight movies that aren’t just academically themed but also teach the lessons essential to understanding this school of cinema.

First, read the spoiler-free bait — a weird and wonderful pick from any time in film and why we think it’s worth memorializing. After you’ve watched the movie, come back for the bite — a breakdown of all the spoiler-y moments you’d want to unpack when exiting a theater.

The Bait: A Lesson in Midnight Movies from Ant Timpson

Midnight movie-goers tend to be friendly, but Ant Timpson is more popular than most.

The New Zealand filmmaker, who pulled off a small miracle when producing “The ABCs of Death,” has been around the world’s festival circuit for decades. He’s smiley,...

The Simpsons As A Live-Action Horror Movie Has A Killer Cast (But It's Total Nightmare Fuel)
Image
The Simpsons, reimagined as a horror movie, brings together a talented celebrity cast, but it's truly terrifying to see familiar characters in such a sinister setting. The beloved main family, known for their dysfunction and love, takes on a disturbing twist as Homer is depicted as a bloody criminal, and Marge's home appears far from inviting. With famous actors like John C. Reilly, Toni Colette, and Patrick Stewart taking on iconic roles, this horrifying version of The Simpsons is a chilling departure from its usual comedic charm.

The Simpsons, reimagined as a horror movie, has a killer cast, but it's an absolute nightmare fuel. Even though the long-running Fox comedy rightly built its reputation on being transgressive and waving away many of the television rules of the time, The Simpsons remains fundamentally a story about a loving family — no matter how dysfunctional. That's why it remains somewhat jarring to see...

Justin Roiland was dropped by Hulu’s Solar Opposites and Koala Man after being ousted from Rick and Morty
Image
Update:

Hulu is cutting ties with Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites co-creator Justin Roiland following charges of felony domestic abuse against his former partner. Hulu, which hosts Solar Opposites and the new series Koala Man, is ending its association with Roiland after allegations came to light. Roiland was an executive producer and voice actor on Solar Opposites and Koala Man.

“We have ended our association with Justin Roiland,” Hulu and 20th TV Animation said. Thankfully for both series fans, Solar Opposites and Koala Man will continue without Roiland’s involvement. The same goes for Rick and Morty, whose team is busy creating episodes for Season 7.

You can read more about Roiland’s firing from Rick and Morty, and the charges lobbied against him in the original article posted below.

Original Article:

After news broke earlier this year that Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland had been charged with felony domestic abuse,...

Lee Hardcastle Interview: Summer's Sleepover
Image
Celebrate the Halloween season in psychedelic fashion with Summer's Sleepover. The Rick and Morty Halloween special finds the titular Smith kid and her friends Nancy and Tricia having their sleepover interrupted by an alien creature who escaped from Rick's stash. They soon realize his cute appearance is hiding a darker nature.

Summer's Sleepover comes from Lee Hardcastle, the director well-known for the "T is for Toilet" segment in The ABC's of Death. Much like his prior work, the Rick and Morty Halloween special proves to be a trippy dive into the beloved Adult Swim show's world with everything fans of the series have come to expect, as well as a completely fresh approach to the material.

Animator Lee Hardcastle On Producing His Surreal Rick And Morty Halloween Special [Exclusive Interview]
Image
Regular viewers of Adult Swim probably know animator Lee Hardcastle from his work on those 15-second skits that often play between commercials. Those segments, called "The Non-Canonical Adventures of Rick and Morty," are wonderful, slightly-unsettling treats for "Rick and Morty" fans, throwing the show's characters into quick movie parodies in a delightfully eerie claymation style. If you don't know Hardcastle from that, you may have been introduced to him through his work on "The ABCs of Death," or his "Simpsons couch gag" shorts. They're violent and often horrifying, but so well-done that you can't help but keep watching.

His latest project was released on Adult Swim at midnight last night: "Summer's Sleepover," a spooky 10-minute short about a sleepover gone horribly wrong. Hardcastle was nice enough to speak to us about his work on the special and his animation career in general.

Rick and Morty: Lee Hardcastle has created a horror short for Halloween
Image
I’ll be honest right up front and admit that I have never seen a single episode of Rick and Morty. I have completely missed out on this pop culture phenomenon. I know there are shades of Back to the Future to it, I’ve heard about Pickle Rick and the love of Szechuan Sauce. But I haven’t actually seen any of it. But I am familiar with the work of Claymation filmmaker Lee Hardcastle, who has made a lot of cool shorts, created the music video for the Gunship song “Tech Noir”, and contributed to the horror anthology The ABCs of Death. So it’s cool to hear that the Rick and Morty folks have teamed up with Hardcastle for a horror short that is going to premiere at midnight on Sunday, October 30th on Adult Swim. The short will then be available to watch on HBO Max the next day,...

New “Rick and Morty” Claymation Horror Short to Premiere on Adult Swim for Halloween
Image
Horror frequently pops up in animated series “Rick and Morty,” both in the episodes and in promos for new seasons. So it’s no surprise that even though season six won’t arrive until late November, “Rick and Morty” still found a way to celebrate Halloween.

The team behind “Rick and Morty” has enlisted the talent of animator Lee Hardcastle (The ABCs of Death) once again, this time with a brand new Claymation horror short titled “Summer’s Sleepover.”

An unexpected guest arrive at Summer’s sleepover party and livens things up in this trippy horror short. “Summer’s Sleepover” premieres Sunday, 10/30 at Midnight Et on Adult Swim, next day globally on HBO Max and on Adult Swim’s YouTube channel. Expect the unexpected in this wacky world.

Hardcastle previously was behind the series’ Hereditary spoof that played ahead of season five’s premiere, which you can watch here.

Child’s Play Is Heading Home Next Month On Blu-Ray And Digital
While horror movies are typically associated with October and Halloween, 2019 is looking to buck that trend entirely. So far this year, we’ve been treated to Jordan Peele’s sophomoric effort Us, another adaptation of a Stephen King novel, and a slasher flick that isn’t afraid to poke fun at genre conventions.

And of course, who could forget Child’s Play, the remake/reboot of the long-running series that originally kicked off all the way back in 1988. 30 years after its debut, it seems the idea of killer dolls can resonate with audiences, even if the new incarnation of Chucky is decidedly more high-tech. The latest from director Lars Klevberg did fairly well at the box office (raking in roughly $40 million globally), and he’s already teased a few ideas for a potential sequel.

If you didn’t get the chance to check out Child’s Play when it was in theaters though,...

Lee Hardcastle Is Back With An Original Incredibly Horrific Animated Short
When it comes to horror, there aren’t many who do it better than Lee Hardcastle. I say that geniunely, as who else in horror today can leave you visibly rattled by claymation animation? ‘Attack of the Adult Babies’ Review
Stars: Kurtis Lowe, Andrew Dunn, Andy Abrahams, Dominic Brunt, Charlie Chuck, Kate Coogan, Simon Corble, Samantha Daniels, Sally Dexter, Howard Ellis, Nicky Evans, Thalia Zucchi, Joanne Mitchell, Mica Proctor, Laurence R. Harvey | Written by Joanne Mitchell, Paul Shrimpton | Directed by Dominic Brunt

Attack of the Adult Babies. What a title! It’s enough on its own to make me want to watch it but the movie has plenty more to offer than the crazy-sounding title. Director Dominic Brunt is best known to many as Paddy in U.K. soap Emmerdale but genre fans should know him better for his directorial work. His first movie was the excellent, gritty, slow burn zombie film Before Dawn and he followed it up with the sometimes-hard-to-watch but great revenge thriller Bait. With his third feature he has chose something very very different…

Great Job, Internet!: Please enjoy these truly disgusting claymation shorts from The Belko Experiment
The gory social-experiment horror flick The Belko Experiment comes out tomorrow, but parties interested in getting a dose of its brand of visceral workplace brutality are in luck. Filmmakers Greg McLean and James T. Gunn teamed up with animator Lee Hardcastle, a stop-motion specialist with a taste for the macabre, to make a trilogy of incredibly violent short films. At around half a minute each, they provide a decidedly low-investment way to see what it looks like when a cute claymation toy gets mowed down by an assault rifle or beaten to death or has its head exploded or, well, has its head exploded again. There are a lot of heads exploding.

If that is not enough, take a look at the 9 Circles Of Cinematic Gore, which we made in conjunction with The Belko Experiment team. These people really love gore.

Belko Experiment Red Band Clip Shows a Bloody Office Massacre
John Gallagher Jr. in The Belko Experiment (2016)
With the March 17 release date fast approaching, Blumhouse Tilt has released another new clip for the sadistic thriller The Belko Experiment, which offers a bloody look at the gruesome workplace violence. This clip in particular features a glimpse at Sean Gunn's Marty Espenscheid trying to come to grips with everything happening around him, telling himself that it's "all in my mind." Unfortunately for him, that isn't exactly what's happening, in this clip that not only features some new footage, but also a few quotes from the nation's critics.

Blumhouse Tilt debuted this clip on YouTube, which also features Abraham Benrubi as Chet Valincourt, who begs Marty to "get down" under one of the tables like he is positioned. Unfortunately for Chet and Marty, it doesn't matter if they're taking cover or not, since, one by one, these employees' heads start exploding. Trying to rationalize the sights and sounds around him,...

25 great directors working outside mainstream cinema
Meet some of the best directors working today, who haven't gone down the blockbuster movie route...

Ever find it a bit lame when the same big name directors get kicked around for every high profile project? Christopher Nolan, Jj Abrams, maybe the Russo Brothers? With so much focus on blockbuster films these days, getting a major franchise job seems like the main acknowledgement of success for a filmmaker. And yes, both the financial and creative rewards can be great. But there are plenty of other directors out there, doing their own thing, from art house auteurs to Dtv action specialists.

Here are 25 examples.

Lee Hardcastle

Even if you don’t know his name, you’ve probably seen Lee Hardcastle’s ultraviolent claymations shared on social media. He first started getting noticed for his two-minute remake of The Thing, starring the famous stop motion penguin Pingu. Far from just a cheap one-joke mash-up,...

‘The ABCs of Death 2′ Blu-ray Review
Directed by Julian Barratt, Alexandre Bustillo, Larry Fessenden, Julian Gilbey, E.L. Katz, Aharon Keshales, Steven Kostanski, Julien Maury, Vincenzo Natali, Bill Plympton, Jen & Sylvia Soska and many more…

It’s a second go around the alphabet of fear with The ABCs of Death 2. 2012′s first installment – an anthology of 26 stories, each representing a letter of the alphabet – was the very definition of a mixed bag, with (sadly) the bad often outweighing the good. However, given that the good was Very good I still held out hope that this sequel would live up to the expectations and potential that the format has.

Thankfully this time round the good outweighs the bad, although surprisingly there are some disappointing segments from directors whose work I’ve enjoyed; and whose feature work has been hailed as some of the best in the genre – not that there’s any evidence of that here – including...

Turbo Kid (2015)
'Turbo Kid' Trailer: A Post-Apocalyptic BMX Adventure
Turbo Kid (2015)
The 2015 Sundance Film Festival is currently in full swing, with tonight marking the world premiere of the futuristic coming-of-age thriller Turbo Kid. If you aren't in Park City, Utah to check it out, Epic Pictures has just released the first trailer for the feature film debut of directors Anouk Whissell, Fran&#231ois Simard and Yoann-Karl Whissell. The movie first began as a short film, as a contest entry for the horror anthology The ABCs of Death. While it eventually lost out to Lee Hardcastle's T is for Toilet, producer Ant Timpson asked the filmmakers if they would consider turning their story into a full-length feature.

The story is set in the ruined post-apocalyptic world of 1997, and follows an orphan known as The Kid (Munro Chambers), who survives on his own through a drought-ridden nuclear winter, traversing the Wasteland on his BMX, scavenging for scraps to trade for a scant supply of water.

There Goes Channel Frederator, Growing Again With 185 New Channels
Channel Frederator refuses to stay out of the headlines as it continues to rack up more animation content partners like it’s the end of the world. The multi-channel network started by animation industry veteran Fred Seibert has just added 185 new channels to its already-huge lineup of content creators.

Frederator’s new members include Domics, Lee Hardcastle, and CyberToons. The Domics channel has over 850,000 subscribers and features musings and stories from the life of owner Dominic Panganiban. Hardcastle creates not-for-children claymation (a form of art Seth Green’s Stoopid Buddy Stoodios wants to teach people) enjoyed by his 100,000+ subscribers. Finally, CyberToons turns famous YouTubers and videos into animations; though the channel doesn’t appear to uploaded a video since 2011, its partnership with Channel Frederator could rectify this lack of updates.

Frederator added about 200 other content partners back in August, and then signed on 141 more only a month after that. More recently,...

Celluloid Screams 2014: ‘The ABCs of Death 2′ Review
Directed by Julian Barratt, Alexandre Bustillo, Larry Fessenden, Julian Gilbey, E.L. Katz, Aharon Keshales, Steven Kostanski, Julien Maury, Vincenzo Natali, Bill Plympton, Jen & Sylvia Soska and many more…

It’s a second go around the alphabet of fear with the debut of The ABCs of Death 2 as part of this years Celluloid Screams film festival. 2012′s first installment – an anthology of 26 stories, each representing a letter of the alphabet – was the very definition of a mixed bag, with (sadly) the bad often outweighing the good. However, given that the good was Very good I still held out hope that this sequel would live up to the expectations and potential that the format has.

Thankfully this time round the good outweighs the bad, although surprisingly there are some disappointing segments from directors whose work I’ve enjoyed; and whose feature work has been hailed as some of the best in...

‘Abcs of Death 2′ trailer – Over-the-top action, beheadings, Russian roulette and other graphic violence
Right from the start, the anthology horror film The ABCs of Death, produced by Ant Timpson and Tim League, came with one major handicap: The film is divided into twenty-six individual chapters, each helmed by a different director (spanning fifteen countries), and each assigned a letter of the alphabet. The directors were given carte blanche to indulge in their most grotesque impulses. Each letter is presented sequentially, and the director’s chosen word is revealed only at the end of each short – sometimes as a punch line or a revelation, and often to underscore or enlighten the segment’s theme. (weaker efforts find the directors taking a cheat). The problem is a lack of cohesion.

Highlights included T is for Toilet by British director Lee Hardcastle, Unearthed by Ben Wheatley, A by Nacho Vigalondo, D for Dogfight, X is for Xxl by Xavier Gens, and the self mocking Q for Quack,...

‘The ABCs of Death 2′ has a release date
Image from The ABC’s of Death 2. Chapter directed by Erik Matti

The ABCs of Death 2 now officially has a release date and it is just in time for Halloween. The film will be released by Magnet and Drafthouse Films on VOD on October 2nd and a limited theatrical run a few weeks later on the 31st .

The sequel is a follow-up to 2012’s horror anthology The ABCs of Death and, like its predecessor, will contain 26 short horror films by some of the genre’s greatest minds. As expected with so many shorts, the original was a bit of a mixed bag. There were certainly some incredible shorts like D is for Dogfight directed by Marcel Sarmiento, T is for Toilet by Lee Hardcastle, U is for Unearthed by Ben Wheatley, X is for Xxl by Xavier Gens, and the disgusting L is for Libido by Timo Tjahjanto. There...

Check Out Lee Hardcastle's Short Film Fun with Black Bulbs
Lee Hardcastle is a whiz with Claymation. So much so that he won The ABC's of Death contest with his short T Is for Toilet, which was included in the film. Now Hardcastle has released a horror short entitled Fun with Black Bulbs. Check it out.

The entire short is one minute and 30 seconds long. How much tension can you build in one minute and 30 seconds? Hardcastle manages to do a pretty fantastic job of making your toes curl in a minute and a half. It's an impressive short that you're sure to dig.

About Fun with Black Bulbs, Hardcastle says, "[It's] a simple trick you can do yourself but one you might regret because it can be pretty creepy what you find around the home. Try it; you'll be surprised."

And be sure to try this short. It's a minute and a half, Dreadies. So worth your time!

Quentin Tarantino's Ghostbusters 3 in Violent Claymation
Claymation master Lee Hardcastle has creation a version of Ghostbusters 3 inspired by the films of Quentin Tarantino. Hardcastle is known for his incredibly funny and violent claymation films, and just in case you missed any of them, you can click here to watch his disturbing work. I would actually love to see Tarantino write and direct Ghostbusters 3! That movie would be amazing, and I'm sure Bill Murray would have no issues with reprising his role if that were they case.

Uruguay's Luis Suarez Bites In New Lee Hardcastle Claymation
Luis Suarez is so far the most controversial footballer of Brazil's 2014 World Cup. He scored a couple of goals and Uruguay reached the second round, but now Suarez won't be able to play the Cup anymore as FIFA suspended him today for nine games and four months. The reason? On Tuesday, June 24, he bit Italy's Giorgio Chiellini! That's right, Suarez bit again. In an avalanche of memes and jokes, director Lee Hardcastle has created the most elaborated piece based on the Suarez World Cup incident: a 20-second claymation! Hardcastle spent 10 hours recreating Suarez's new bite with clay, and now you can watch the result....

'Ghostbusters' Meets Quentin Tarantino in this Awesome Lee Hardcastle Claymation Mash-up
Since it seems like we may never see a Ghostbusters 3 on the big screen (and honestly, we’re okay with that), this cool new Claymation short might be the next best thing – particularly if you love our ghost-busting pals from the original film and the work of Quentin Tarantino. Lee Hardcastle has crafted Ghostbusters Volume 3 – a short film that puts Peter Venkman and company into animated form, while re-creating scenes from Quentin Tarantino’s filmography. Yes, it’s a little random as far as the high concept goes, but Hardcastle (who’s work has appeared in projects like The ABCs of Death) makes it all work in a surprisingly entertaining way. The filmmaker leaves no stone unturned in his quest to skewer all things Tarantino – there...

Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
Here's What 'Ghostbusters 3' Would Look Like If Tarantino Directed It - In Claymation
Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
Look, I don't quite understand the point of making "Ghostbusters 3" as a Claymation Quentin Tarantino homage either, but then again who cares? This clip by animator Lee Hardcastle is creative and absurd in all the best ways. Bonus points for casting Janine in the Uma Thurman role from "Kill Bill." Go get 'em, Annie Potts. Hilarious Claymation Trailer Imagines Quentin Tarantino's Ghostbusters 3
Much ado has been made about who will be directing the long-gestating next installment in the beloved Ghostbusters film franchise, leaving many fans to imagine what the movie would be like if their favorite filmmaker was at the helm.

One of those fans is Lee Hardcastle, who made a name for himself with the ABCs of Death short film "T is for Toilet." A master of the art of claymation, Hardcastle just put together a hilarious little short that imagines a world wherein Quentin Tarantino is hired to direct Ghostbusters 3.

It essentially places the iconic characters into situations ripped straight out of films like Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill.

As you might imagine, the results are absolutely hilarious, and the claymation trailer is needless to say quite the treat for those who appreciate both Ghostbusters and the uber-violent brand of cinema that Tarantino specializes in. Can't say I...
