Image
Director Rian Johnson is set to return with the third installment in his Knives Out franchise, titled Wake Up Dead Man, set for release later this year. During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Johnson teased what fans can expect from the upcoming installment starring Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc.

It’s much more (of) a Gothic, much more grounded tone. It’s more similar to the first one in that way.

Johnson made the above statement, explaining that the movie will trace back to Gothic fiction’s roots. As a result, its tone will predate the works of Agatha Christie. Instead, the third installment will draw inspiration from another influential author of the genre, and here is what Johnson had to say about Knives Out 3‘s tone and style.

Netflix has shared a first look at Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the third installment of filmmaker Rian Johnson’s franchise. The film will launch on the streaming service on December 12, 2025.

TheJohn Wick franchise has become one of Hollywood's biggest recent successes. Despite lacking an established intellectual property, the movies broke through in a space increasingly ruled by sequels and adaptations. With Keanu Reeves as the leading man, the movies feature action and a complicated political scene that only gets more complicated with every new release. The world has even begun to expand, thanks to the success of its recent spin-off, The Continental: From the World of John Wick. Having been released on Peacock and Prime Video, it showcased the Continental Hotel long before John Wick's retirement.

Though John Wick managed to set itself apart, there were places where it fell into the realm of traditional action. The gun-fu fighting style was new, but the hero himself was not.

10 Best Twist Villain Reveals In Movies, Ranked
Image
In many Hollywood movies, the villain is introduced in the opening scenes or no later than the final minutes of the first act, giving audiences someone to root against. The antagonist’s sinister motivations and master plans are also made clear from the start, providing some justification for the protagonist’s quest to stop them.

However, there have been a couple of times when the bad guy was not only introduced late, but they were also not who everyone thought they were. The revelation that these individuals were hiding in plain sight all along typically leads to additional out-of-nowhere plot twists, leaving fans more awed with what has transpired.

Rian Johnson Says 'Knives Out' & 'Poker Face' Have Interesting Connection
Image
One of the most useful tool an antagonist can use in any kind of story is lying to keep their intentions hidden from the heroes. However, some characters will not let that stand, as Rian Johnson has demonstrated in his recent films and television shows. During a recent interview with Deadline, the filmmaker talked about how Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas) from Knives Out and Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) from Poker Face have similar abilities that are almost inverted, given how both characters go above and beyond when someone is lying. Here's what Johnson had to say regarding the abilities of his protagonists:...

Knives Out: Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Secret Cameo Revealed
Image
Many viewers likely missed the Joseph Gordon-Levitt Knives Out cameo that happened early on in the movie. This is because it is impossible to see the actor on the screen during his cameo. Directed by Rian Johnson, the mystery thriller Knives Out included an all-star cast and a murder mystery premise. With names like Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, and more, it was easy to miss that Gordon-Levitt cameo, especially since he wasn't advertised as appearing in the movie. The Joseph Gordon-Levitt Knives Out moment is conceptually hidden in a frame within a frame, but the audio is the primary clue.

Gordon-Levitt understands the beauty of a cameo. After starring in Johnson's feature directorial debut, Brick, he returned for a small role in the director’s second film, The Brothers Bloom (playing a shirt-and-tie bar patron). After taking on one of the starring roles in Johnson's third movie,...

Chris Evans Pitches Potential Return In Knives Out Sequel
Image
Knives Out star Chris Evans reflects on the way his character could return. The 2019 film, which was directed by Rian Johnson, centered on the mystery surrounding the murder of crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). Although it at first seemed to be caused by the actions of his nurse Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas), detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) discovered that the true culprit was Harlan's grandson Ransom Drysdale, the character portrayed by Evans.

Per ComicBook.com, Evans recently appeared at a panel at Chicago's C2E2. During the event, he was asked if Ransom might return in a potential Knives Out sequel. While he couldn't confirm any such thing actually happening, he did offer an idea as to how Ransom could reappear with an "elaborate plan to actually take down Benoit Blanc and Marta." Rian Johnson Is Working On Knives Out 3, But It 'Hasn't All Snapped Into Focus Yet'
Image
Talk about a plan that even Benoit Blanc himself would have to sit back and admire. After emerging as one of the most creative and talented up-and-coming artists with a number of original films, starting with "Brick" and continuing with "The Brothers Bloom" and "Looper," Rian Johnson leveraged his experiences on both "Breaking Bad" (where he directed two of the best episodes in the entire series) and "Star Wars" to firmly establish himself as one of the most exciting filmmakers in the business right now. With both "Knives Out" and its sequel "Glass Onion" under his belt, Johnson's hold on pop culture is about to continue with the Natasha Lyonne-starring series "Poker Face."

But what about the storyteller's next big-screen outing? To nobody's surprise, the break-out success of the Benoit Blanc series has ensured that audiences will receive a steady diet of murder-mysteries starring Daniel Craig's rambunctious detective for years to come.

Glass Onion Continues An Important Knives Out Trend (& Makes It Better)
Image
Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery!

The Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion carries on a significant trend from the original. Glass Onion was released on Netflix in December 2022, a few weeks after a brief theatrical release, and has been met with rave reviews. Audiences and critics agree that the murder mystery sequel lives up to its predecessor and are now eagerly anticipating a third installment in the Knives Out franchise. While Glass Onion is a stand-alone sequel with an all-new all-star cast, besides Daniel Craig returning as Benoit Blanc, there were still many similarities to the first Knives Out film.

Both Knives Out and Glass Onion are Agatha Christie-style murder mysteries with similar tropes, but then they are subverted, and the films reveal plot twists that leave audiences shocked. Both films in the Knives Out series also have all-star casts, witty humor,...

Daniel Craig Perplexed by the Love for Chris Evans' Knives Out Sweater
Image
Knives Out star Daniel Craig still doesn't understand why his co-star Chris Evans' sweater became an iconic fashion moment for audiences across the world. The whodunit film, which was directed by Rian Johnson and premiered in theaters in late 2019, featured Craig as the private detective Benoit Blanc and Evans as Hugh Ransom Drysdale, the grandson of a famous crime novelist whose death fuels the central mystery of the film. In one scene where Ransom is meeting with his grandfather's nurse Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas), he is depicted wearing a chunky cable knit sweater that captured the imaginations of many viewers and led to a cavalcade of memes appreciating the costume piece.

BBC Radio 1 interviewed Craig ahead of the release of the sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on Netflix. When reflecting on the original film, he revealed that he still doesn't understand why the sweater took off the way it did.

Chris Evans' Knives Out Sweater Has Competition From Dave Bautista
Image
Chris Evans' infamous knit sweater has some competition in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, according to Rian Johnson. Shortly after finishing Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Johnson wrote and directed the subversive whodunnit, Knives Out, which starred Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, a master detective investigating the death of mystery novelist Harlan Thrombey. The film's stellar ensemble cast also included the former Captain America actor as Ransom Drysdale, a spoiled trust fund playboy with a shocking dark side. However, many were more fixated on and fascinated with Evans' famous sweater, which he wore in a pivotal scene with Ana de Armas' Marta Cabrera.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery premiere, Johnson was asked which costumes from the sequel could potentially rival Evans' cable-knit sweater from the original. The writer/director revealed there are two – Dave Bautista's skimpy bikini as well as Craig's swimsuit.

Why Harlan’s Portrait Changes In Knives Out’s Ending
Image
A small detail in Knives Out's ending shows Harlan's portrait has changed after Benoit Blanc solved the case of his murder. Rian Johnson's 2019 murder mystery assembled an all-star cast of actors to bring a twisting plot to life. While Daniel Craig's detective Benoit Blanc and Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas) were at the center, Knives Out's story revolved around Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). The mystery novel writer's death after his birthday party made all of his family members suspects, with Blanc left to collect all relevant information about the Thrombey household and what happened the night Harlan died.

Although Marta believed she accidentally gave Harlan the wrong medicine that would lead to his death, the reality was his nephew Ransom (Chris Evans) was the killer. Blanc eventually puts all the pieces together to unearth this truth, resulting in Marta taking over Harlan's estate - much to his family's chagrin.

Ana de Armas played the breakout role of Marta Cabrera in 2019's critical and financial hit Knives Out but it was a part that de Armas nearly passed on. Ana de Armas Almost Said No to Breakthrough Knives Out Role
Image
Knives Out was the surprise hit of 2019 that initially few expected to do well. Rian Johnson's homage to Agatha Christie's style of detective fiction saw Daniel Craig affecting a heavy southern drawl in the role of Benoit Blanc, gentleman detective on the case about the murder of a reclusive millionaire. Ana de Arms featured in the movie as the dead millionaire's nurse Marta Cabrera, in a role that put her on the map in Hollywood. In an interview with Flaunt, de Armas revealed she almost passed on her career-making role since the only description for the character she received at first was "Latina, caretaker, pretty".

"Things could have been very different. I really pay attention to what that little description is. I'm sure whoever did it wasn't thinking about what that meant but for me, I was just like, 'Oh no, I'm not doing this!' What do you mean-caretaker,...

‘Knives Out’s’ Ana de Armas Says Film Roles for Latinas Often ‘Don’t Really Reflect Our Community’
Sharp, current political and social satire lies at the heart of Lionsgate’s “Knives Out,” a darkly comedic whodunnit that often aims to upend Hollywood’s cultural conventions.

One key player in the shift is Ana de Armas, who portrays a caretaker for Christopher Plummer’s character in the film. With a fully formed, fleshed-out character, de Armas sees roles such as hers as uncommon, she told Variety at Thursday’s “Knives Out” premiere in Westwood, Calif.

“These characters don’t exist. They’re rare. It’s just almost impossible to see – or at least the previous Latina, Spanish-speaking parts that I’ve seen before, they’ve really not necessarily had the best qualities or possibilities,” de Armas said. “Or they don’t really reflect our community or our strengths. Definitely in this set of a wealthy family, that’s not a character that you can even imagine succeeding and getting out of the whole situation well.

Knives Out Character Posters and Character Details Shared By Rian Johnson
Director Rian Johnson has shared a series of character posters for his upcoming whodunnit murder mystery film, Knives Out. The movie looks like it’s going to be an extremely fun flick and I love the cast that the filmmaker managed to gather together for it.

In the posters below, you’ll see Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Lakeith Stanfield, Michael Shannon, Ana de Armas, Don Johnson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Christopher Plummer, and more. Each of the posters come along with details on each of the characters.

The story is set in an old Victorian style mansion with several family members who don’t like each other, gathered together to celebrate their father’s birthday, but the party comes to an end when the father is murdered. Two detectives played by Craig and Stanfield come to investigate the death and they are going to stay in the mansion until the investigation is complete.
