10 Best Sci-Fi TV Shows That Are Based On Books
Image
Science fiction is one of the most beloved and intriguing genres in film, literature, and television alike. The nature of sci-fi content often limits its portrayal in a visual medium. They typically include technology, scenarios, or futuristic concepts that would be impossible to display in a form other than the written word. Books have the unique ability to utilize the imagination of the reader and present stories that simply wouldn't work if presented on screen. With that being said, certain shows effectively turn their written source material into a thoughtful representation of the original story.

The most recent example of famous sci-fi literature-turned-television is Netflix's 3 Body Problem, which explores mind-blowing ideas across space and time. Given the show's popularity, Netflix is set to release a second season of the 3 Body Problem. Perhaps the most critically acclaimed sci-fi series of this nature is The Expanse, a thoughtful tale...

Why The Hunger Games’ Tribute Cast Worked So Well
Image
Directed by Gary Ross as an adaptation of the Suzanne Collins YA book series, The Hunger Games took 2012 by storm with its exhilarating story and impressive ensemble, but one casting choice was especially important. The Hunger Games dives into the dystopian state of Panem and its yearly battle royal tournament, where 24 tributes - one male and one female from each of Panem's 12 districts - fight to the death until one tribute remains. The Hunger Games focuses on the 74th Hunger Games tournament in which Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss Everdeen volunteers in place of her younger sister to represent District 12 in the arena.

Far too often in movies and TV, adult actors in their mid-20s and early 30s are cast as teenagers. At the time of production, however, 15 of the 24 actors playing tributes in The Hunger Games were under the age of 20. Given The Hunger Games' harrowing distinction that all...

Happy 20th Birthday, ‘Toy Story’!
Tom Hanks, R. Lee Ermey, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, John Ratzenberger, Wallace Shawn, Jim Varney, and Don Rickles in Toy Story (1995)
Buzz and Woody and Slink and Hamm have been in our lives for two decades — Pixar’s “Toy Story” opened 20 years ago today, making animation history as it did. The first feature film from the studio and the first created completely using computer-generated imagery paved the way for movies like “Shrek,” “How to Train Your Dragon” and, of course, several more films from the acclaimed Pixar. Its 16th feature film, “The Good Dinosaur,” opens in theaters this Wednesday. A third sequel to “Toy Story” will come in 2018. The legacy of “Toy Story” is difficult to overstate: In addition to being a game-changer in the world CG animation, it raised the bar on family films that really appeal to audiences of all ages; Andy’s toys can be seen in Disneyland rides, real-world kids’ toy boxes and in countless Halloween costumes each year; and in 2005 the U.S. Library of Congress declared the movie culturally,...

Under The Dome, Season 2, Episode 1, “Heads Will Roll”

Written by Stephen King

Directed by Jack Bender

Airs Mondays at 10 pm Est on CBS

Famed author Stephen King has a long history of film adaptations of his novels, resulting in features such as The Shining, 1408, and two theatrical versions of Carrie. His stories, however, have not been as explored in the television medium, save for a few tv miniseries, most notably of The Stand, and a tv version of The Dead Zone. Last summer added another show to the latter group, in the form of Under The Dome. With a first season marred by odd story segues and inconsistent character decisions on its shoulders, the show made its second season premiere on Monday night, removing some weak elements and offering potential for improvement, depending on how certain storylines progress.

First Photos from Under the Dome Season 2
Season one of the CBS TV series Under the Dome, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel of the same name, ended on a very tense, throat-tightening note. Its return this summer, then, will likely sate the appetites of viewers who have been hungry for more misadventures in Chester’s Mill. We previously reported that Stephen King would write the premiere episode of the second season, and it looks like the show’s body-dropping drama will be back in full force.

In addition to writing the second season’s premiere episode, it’s likely that Stephen King will drop by the Sweetbriar Rose diner for a coffee cup cameo. The second season of Under the Dome premieres Monday, June 30 (10:00 – 11:00 Pm, Et/Pt) on CBS:

“Under The Dome tells the story of a small town that is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome.
