'Easy Way for Them to Cancel the Show': A League of Their Own Star on the 'Scapegoat' That Doomed the Series
Image
A League of Their Own star and co-creator Abbi Jacobson recently discussed last year's cancellation of the Prime Video series, suggesting that the reason it got the axe was a "scapegoat" excuse. Following the initial renewal of the fan-favorite show for a four-episode second and final season in early 2023, Amazon canceled it in mid-2023, citing the delays caused by the WGA strike as the prime reason.

Jacobson, who played Carson Shaw, the catcher and one of the coaches for the Rockford Peaches in the series, told Collider that the strike was used as an easy excuse to shelve A League of Their Own. "I was just talking to someone about this yesterday. Listen, I think a lot of networks and studios canceled things when the strike was happening," she said. "Was the strike a part of the cancellation? Yes. But did it feel, also, that the strike was an easy...

Why Amazon Canceled A League Of Their Own (Despite The Season 2 Renewal)
Image
Amazon cancels A League of Their Own season 2 due to ongoing Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes, halting many productions. Sony Pictures Television is shopping the series around to other platforms in hopes of finding it a new home. The abrupt cancellation of the show has caused controversy, with fans frustrated by Amazon's reasoning, which has been criticized as an excuse.

A League of Their Own was greenlit for a shortened season 2 back in April, but Amazon has now canceled the series altogether due to continuing shifts in the industry. Based on the classic 1992 movie of the same name, A League of Their Own takes place in the 1940s and revolves around the formation of the women’s baseball team the Rockford Peaches during World War II. The series stars Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson as the team’s catcher, Carson Shaw, and Roxanne Roxanne’s Chanté Adams as pitcher Max Chapman,...

‘A League Of Their Own’ Creator Abbi Jacobson Angered By Prime Cancellation
Image
“A League of Their Own” creator Abbi Jacobson is furious at the cancellation of her show.

Prime Video is not moving forward with the previously ordered second — and final — season of comedy-drama A League Of Their Own, cocreated and starring Jacobson, Deadline has learned.

The series was a reimagining of the 1992 film, A League of Their Own, which was about the women who formed their own professional baseball league during World War II.

Jacobson was Carson Shaw, D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place) was Greta Gill, and Chanté Adams was Max Chapman in the series.

Production delays wrought by the ongoing Hollywood strikes was blamed by Prime sources for the demise.

That excuse didn’t sit well with Jacobson.

“To blame this cancellation on the strike is bulls–t and cowardly,” Jacobson wrote Friday in an Instagram post. “But this post isn’t about all that. About all the ways this...

A League of Their Own has officially — and unexpectedly — struck out at Prime Video. The streamer has opted to scrap the series’ previously announced second and final season, TVLine has confirmed.

Also on Friday, Prime Video reversed its Season 2 renewal of the sci-fi drama The Peripheral, starring Chloë Grace Moretz. An Amazon insider tells TVLine that both cancellations are due to production delays caused by the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

The Peripheral (2022)
‘The Peripheral’ Canceled at Prime Video Despite Season 2 Renewal
The Peripheral (2022)
Prime Video has canceled “The Peripheral,” despite the Chloë Grace Moretz-led sci-fi series receiving a renewal for a second season in February.

An individual with knowledge of the matter tells TheWrap that the cancelation stems from delays caused by the ongoing Writers’ Guild of America strike, which began on May 2, and SAG-AFTRA strike, which began on July 14. The individual noted that the series was originally intended to go into production this year for a release in 2024.

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by William Gibson, the series hailed from “Westworld” creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s Kilter Films banner, who are under an overall deal at Amazon Studios. “The Peripheral” follows Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. She is smart, ambitious and doomed. She has no future; until...

“We’re Telling a Story of a Generation”: How ‘A League of Their Own’ Explores the Experiences of Black Women in Baseball
Image
Click here to read the full article.

In Amazon’s A League of Their Own TV show, the experiences of women in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League are just half of the story.

A scene in Penny Marshall’s 1992 film of the same name inspires the other half of the series, which debuted Aug. 12 on Prime Video. In the sequence, Rockford Peaches catcher Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) fields a painfully fast throw from an unnamed Black woman (DeLisa Chinn-Tyler), who comes down from the stands to return a foul ball. It’s one of the movie’s most memorable moments because of what it alludes to beyond its brief screen time: the history of Black women in baseball.

Given the chance to expand the story Marshall told, which itself was based on director Mary Wilson and producers Kim Wilson and Kelly Candaele’s 1987 documentary about the Aagpbl, co-creators Abbi Jacobson...
