Exclusive: Lionsgate Television has landed its first Israeli drama series.

The U.S. major is teaming with Israel’s Yes and Gil Formats on a spy drama based on the hunt for Doctor Josef Mengele starring Dark’s Oliver Masucci.

The as-yet-untitled show comes from vet Israeli producer Assaf Gil, who is creating with Moshe Zonder (Tehran) and Ronit Weiss-Berkowitz (The Girl from Oslo). Lionsgate is co-producing and distributing.

Masucci, who played Ulrich Nielsen in Netflix smash Dark and portrayed Adolf Hitler in 2015’s Look Who’s Back, stars as Uri, the alpha male of a kibbutz and one of the pioneers of the state of Israel. HBO has released the first official trailer for “Oslo,” a film adaptation of the Tony-winning play of the same name starring Ruth Wilson and Andrew Scott. Playwright J.T. Rogers wrote and executive-produced the movie, which is directed by Tony winner Bartlett Sher. “Oslo” centers around a Norwegian couple who find themselves in the middle of negotiations for the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords, a pivotal agreement between the Government of Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (Plo).

Oftentimes, when an actor makes their directorial debut, they seek to cut their teeth on a small project that ultimately makes few waves. Amos Gitai’s drama about the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin to world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival.

Paris-based Indie Sales has acquired international sales rights to Rabin: The Last Day, a drama about the events leading up to the 1995 murder of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

Directed by Israeli film-maker Amos Gitai, the film will receive its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival (Sept 2-12).

Gitai has previously been nominated five times for Venice’s Golden Lion with Berlin-Yerushalaim (1989), Eden (2001), Alila (2003), Promised Land (2004) and Ana Arabia (2013).

Gitai, who co-wrote Rabin with regular collaborator Marie-José Sanselme, shot the film in February at various sites in Israel, from Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square to the settlement of Kedumim in the West Bank

Gidi (Tzahi Grad), an Israeli man sitting in a rocking chair, rolling a cigarette, hears a rustling in the trees just off his deck. He looks and an Arab villager on horseback comes trotting from behind the trees at a leisurely pace and asks if Gidi would mind rolling him a cigarette as well. The man is a stranger to Gidi, but he insists he take his, lights it for him and two puffs later the villager hands it back. "That's allc" Gidi asks. "Not only is this the best film [at the Busan International Film Festival], this is the best film of the year," Quentin Tarantino declared last fall, and just like that, the profile of Israeli thriller "Big Bad Wolves" got raised immediately. The best part, is that the film deserves the praise. Conviction is both an extraordinarily beneficial and destructive quality a person can espouse. One can find an unshakeable energy in conviction to drive them through a sea of challenges and persecution in order to fight for what they believe is right. On the other end of the spectrum a person’s staunch conviction can encourage them to employ extreme methods to prove a point in the face of defiance. The writing and directing duo of Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado return for their second effort after 2010′s Rabies with Big Bad Wolves, a film in which various characters’ convictions regarding a murder suspect’s culpability is severely tested.

Meak, innocent looking school teacher Dror (Rotem Keinan) is, in the eyes of his students, their parents and the police a pedophile and murderer.

“Big Bad Wolves” pulls no punches. It rips off toenails instead. This incredibly dark thriller, courtesy of the twisted folks who made the indie horror hit “Rabies,” built notable buzz at its Tribeca Film Festival and Chicago International Film Festival screenings but really took off when Quentin Tarantino named it his favorite film of 2013.

It’s easy to see what Qt loved here with the tonal balance between stunning violence, pitch black humor, and whodunit plotting. It’s the first excellent film of 2014 (even if Qt may be going a bit overboard) with a gut punch of an ending.

Original story 12/09: While Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado's revenge thriller "Big Bad Wolves" took home awards from Sitges and won five trophies from the Ophirs, Israel's version of the Oscars, those honors likely don't quite beat the feeling one gets when someone like Quentin Tarantino shouts out praise for your film. And that's just what the filmmaker did earlier this year when he hit the Busan International Film Festival said about "Big Bad Wolves": "Not only is this the best film in Busan, this is the best film of the year."  Starring Lior Ashkenazi and Rotem Keinan, the film tells a darkly humorous story centered on Miki, a detective who will stop at nothing in chasing down Dror, a suspected child killer. And certainly, the movie resonated with The Playlist, with our man at this year's Tribeca Film Festival calling it "bold, beautifully told, and surprisingly funny.

Israeli crime thriller 'Big Bad Wolves' has been the subject of plenty of praise recently including a quite defining quotation from one of the best filmmakers of all time. 'Djanjo Unchained's Quentin Tarantino has gone on record to state this is in fact the 'best film of the year' and the project, from writer/director duo Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, will get all sorts of attention upon its stateside release.
