Image
Tyler Perry recently released a psychological crime drama film called Straw. The movie, which debuted on Netflix on June 6, has been a hit with viewers.

Per ScreenRant, the latest thriller from Madea creator Perry has closed out its first weekend on Netflix with some solid reviews from viewers. Written and directed by Perry, who also produced alongside Angi Bones and Tony Strickland, Straw stars Taraji P. Henson as Janiya Wiltkinson, a single mother living with her often ill daughter Aria. Tyler Perry's Duplicity is the latest collaboration between the prolific filmmaker and Prime Video, and it follows a familiar pattern for anyone's who's watched his other work. The film starts with the death of a Black man who is mistaken for a robber, and so at the beginning, Tyler Perry's Duplicity wants to be a timely movie about police shootings. But then it transitions to...

Does Hunter Doohan's Adam Desiato Die In Your Honor?
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Your Honor."

"Your Honor" wasn't quite the hit that star Bryan Cranston's previous drama series, "Breaking Bad," was. But when your drama series is on Showtime (now Paramount+ with Showtime), it's at somewhat of a disadvantage in terms of its reach — which is why the excellent, savage satire that was "The Curse" never got the support it deserved. Luckily, after the series wrapped up in 2023, "Your Honor" got a Netflix boost when it hit the streamer back in July 2024, making it a much more widely-viewed show than it ever was before.

That's a good thing, too. As widowed New Orleans judge Michael Desiato, Cranston was characteristically brilliant, delivering an arresting performance that demanded a lot from the actor as he rendered the Judge's transformation from morally upstanding citizen to compromised criminal. After his own son, Adam (Hunter Doohan), admits to killing a young man...

Why Fia Baxter Gave Up Her Baby In The Your Honor Season 2 Ending
Image
Spoilers for Your Honor for seasons 1 and 2 ahead.

Fia Baxter (Lilli Kay) becomes a critical character in Your Honor season 2 and when she gives up her baby, it marks a critical moment in her relationship with her family and her past. Sofia "Fia" Baxter is the only daughter of crime lord Jimmy Baxter (Michael Stuhlbarg), and his wife Gina (Hope Davis). In season 1, Fia becomes Adam Desiato's (Hunter Doohan) girlfriend, though she is unaware that Adam was the one who killed her brother. Fia is a sweet and kind character, in contrast to her more hot-headed older brother, Carlo (Jimi Stanton).

Adam and Fia's romance lasts until Adam is accidentally shot in the season 1 finale, but their relationship lives on as revealed in Your Honor season 2, episode 1. At the end of the episode, it's shown that Fia has a newborn, and there's only one person who could be the father: Adam.

Your Honor Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: Convict Rodeo, The New Season Direction, A Surprise Pregnancy
Image
Spoilers for Your Honor season 1 ahead.Your Honor season 2, episode 1, "Part Eleven" picks up right where season 1 left off, requiring any recap to cover the big points of the season 1 finale. Adapted from the Israeli series Kvodo, Your Honor season 1 premiered in December 2020 on Showtime, billed as a miniseries. The show earned middling reviews with a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it's one of Bryan Cranston's best performances. He plays the lead and titular "honor", Michael Desiato, a respected New Orleans judge who subverts the law to save his son, Adam (Hunter Doohan).

The end of Your Honor season 1 sees Adam shot dead, despite everything Michael tried to do to protect him. It's a tragedy in every sense, as Michael compromises his morals to protect Adam, but his son still winds up dead from a fluke accident and Michael ends up in prison. Despite the finality of season 1, interest in...

Your Honor Season 2 Review: A Lesser But Still Worthy Follow-Up
Image
Back in 2019, we watched as Bryan Cranston spiraled deeper and deeper into a web of lies so twisted, it seemed like the only way out was death. Your Honor Season 1 followed Judge Michael Desiato (Cranston) as he goes to extreme lengths to cover up his son’s hit-and-run. Not an easy task for any parent, let alone when the victim is the son of the head of New Orleans’ most notorious crime family, Jimmy Baxter (Michael Stuhlbarg). Michael’s deceit and cover-ups lead to the wrongful conviction of a member of a local gang, Kofi Jones (Lamar Johnson). All but one member of Kofi’s family is killed in a bombing by the Baxters, and he himself is beaten to death by Jimmy Baxter’s older son, Carlo (Jimi Stanton) in prison. This leads to Michael fixing the trial of Carlo to keep the Baxters at bay. Oh, and Michael...

Bryan Cranston’s Showtime Drama ‘Your Honor’ Pushes Season 2 Premiere Date To 2023
Image

The 10-episode second season starring Bryan Cranston will now bow on demand and on streaming Friday, January 13, 2023, and on-air on Sunday, January 15 at 9 pm. This is one of the first major scheduling decisions since David Nevins announced his departure as Chairman and CEO of Showtime Networks, and Chris McCarthy would be taking over at the helm of the premium cabler.

It Starts On The Page: Read The Script For “Part One” Of ‘Your Honor’ Penned By Peter Moffat
Image
In December, Showtime debuted Your Honor, a harrowing crime drama starring Bryan Cranston in a role that brought the actor his eighth Golden Globe nomination.

The 10-part series, executive produced by The Good Fight’s Robert and Michelle King and The Night Of’s Peter Moffat, centers on Michael Desiato (Cranston), a prominent New Orleans judge whose son Adam (Hunter Doohan) accidently kills another teenager in a hit-and-run collision.

When Desiato finds out what has happened, he immediately urges his son to turn himself into the police. He changes his mind, however, when he learns the victim of the hit-and-run was the son of local mob moss, Jimmy Baxter (Michael Stuhlbarg). The revelation leads him to dispose of evidence incriminating Adam. Naturally, the judge’s actions have tragic consequences.

Your Honor’s first episode sets the stage for violent conflict between Desiato, Adam and the Baxter family. Edward Berger directed...

Via Zoom: Director Logan Stone's Journey to His New Film ‘Exodus’
Image
Chicago – The filmmaker’s journey to premiere is different for all, but no one has seemed to symbolize it better than Logan Stone, the director and co-writer of the new release “Exodus.” The film will open in theaters and Apple TV+ streaming on March 19th, 2021.

“Exodus” involves Connor (Jimi Stanton), an enforcer in a small town, feeling the effects several years after The Rapture. His job is to make sure no one leaves town, but after questioning an escapee, he discovers a VHS tape that paints the image of “The Door,” rumored to be an entry to a Utopian Paradise. He also then escapes, to pursue this portal to salvation.

In this first clip, director Logan Stone expands upon the story of “Exodus,” accessed by Clicking Here … followed by the film’s trailer.

Filmmaker Logan Stone has a Chicago connection via his roots in St. Louis. After doing his undergrad at Southern Methodist University,...

Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)
A VHS Tape Leads to a Portal in Post-Rapture Times in 'Exodus' Trailer
Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)
"Don't be afraid..." Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for Exodus, a peculiar new old school sci-fi adventure of sorts. When a VHS-tape proves the existence of a rumored doorway to paradise, a young man abandons his decaying hometown in pursuit of the door to salvation, evading vengeful pursuers along the way. The film is set in a "post-rapture world" and involves post-apocalyptic gangs running towns. This doesn't look as good as it should, but there's some interesting ideas in here. Exodus stars Jimi Stanton, Janelle Snow, Charles Andrew Gardner, Keith Jardine, James McKinney, Hannah Kloepfer, Zachary Gossett, Dan Gonón, Grace Barnes, and David Leonard. There isn't enough footage in this trailer to say if it's going to be any good, however the poster actually gets my attention more than anything. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Logan Stone's Exodus, direct from Gravitas' YouTube: In a post-rapture world,...

‘Your Honor’ Finale: Peter Moffat on That Shakespearean Ending
Image
Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Part Ten,” the series finale of “Your Honor.”

Showtime’s limited series “Your Honor” started with a horrific yet accidental child-on-child crime when Adam Desiato (Hunter Doohan) hit Rocco Baxter (Benjamin Wadsworth) with his car and then left the scene after Rocco had died in the street, so it seems only fitting that it would end with another. But, showrunner Peter Moffat tells Variety, that wasn’t always going to be the case.

“Originally the ending was going to be that Jimmy Baxter takes possession of Adam — that he owns him — and that’s the kind-of killing of Adam. While his father looks on, he loses Adam to his nemesis,” he says.

Instead, in the months Moffat had to sit with later scripts after production was paused due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he realized he wanted to bring Eugene...

There are so many clichés in the film world. So many of today's films are formulaic. Heck, before there even was a film world there was theater. That Shakespeare guy, even he reworked older stories. For example, Romeo and Juliet. The plot is based on an Italian tale translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562 and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1567. Othello comes from the Hecatommithi, a collection of tales published in 1565 by Giraldi Cinthio. Cinthio in turn had been influenced by the Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. Shakespeare's source for Macbeth is the account of Macbeth, King of Scotland, Macduff, and Duncan in Holinshed's Chronicles from 1587, a history of England, Scotland, and Ireland. And so on and so on.
