During filming or on stage, often wears or carries a totem personal to his character. As Mr. Sunshine in "Z Nation" Season Four, though never visible, he wore a silver ring made from the handle of a collector spoon which bore an eagle clutching a banner emblazoned with the word "Ohio" (where Michael was born) and a chevron with an image of the sun rising behind a mountain. He discovered it and purchased it at a street fair in Roslyn, Washington, on his drive home from Spokane to Seattle after his first day of filming. Roslyn is the town in which "Northern Exposure" was filmed.
