Everyone Who’s Backed Stephen Colbert Since CBS Canceled ‘The Late Show’
Image
Since CBS announced its decision to unceremoniously end The Late Show next May, an array of celebrities, politicians, and fellow late-night legends have thrown their support behind the institution’s current host, Stephen Colbert.

Adam Sandler called Colbert a “strong man,” and added, “he’s gonna do great,” when asked about the cancellation at the premiere of Happy Gilmore 2. “I feel terrible that he doesn’t have what he’s had for so many years … and my heart goes out to him,” Sandler continued. “But I know the guy...

Thelonious Monk, the Teenage Weirdo, and the Battle Over a Lost Sonic Masterpiece
Image
The Greatest Lost Concert in American history almost never happened at all. It was Oct. 27, 1968, in Palo Alto, California. Outside of his high school, Danny Scher, a 16-year-old, bushy-haired, jazz-obsessed, self-described “weirdo,” was pacing the parking lot waiting for his hero, and music’s most elusive and enigmatic genius, to show up: composer and pianist Thelonious Monk.

To the disbelief of most everyone — including his mother and girlfriend waiting alongside him — Scher claimed to have booked the jazz legend for an afternoon gig, the modern equivalent of securing Kendrick Lamar for prom.

Late Night Hosts Mourn the Loss of 'The Late Show' After Stephen Colbert's Shocking Cancellation
Image
CBS made the shocking decision yesterday to pull the plug on The Late Show after over 30 seasons on-air, citing a "financial decision" amid the tenuous late-night landscape. This doesn't just mean the end of Stephen Colbert's time at the desk, but the end of a late-night institution powered by dedicated crew members and originated by the legendary David Letterman in 1993. It was hard to envision anyone carrying the torch after Letterman's departure, but Colbert managed to keep the fire burning for over ten years now, and he's on track to go out on top as the highest-rated of all late-night programs. As his and the show's successful run prepares to draw to a close in May 2026, his fellow hosts have spoken out in support of the former Colbert Report mastermind.

Among the first to chime in was Colbert's fellow former Strike Force Five member and ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel.

Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon Shocked Over CBS’ Decision to End ‘Late Show’: “F*** You and All Your Sheldons”
Image
The worlds of politics and entertainment have reacted with shock and disgust over the surprise news that CBS’ The Late Show With Stephen Colbert will end its run in 2026.

The likes of Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ben Stiller, John Cusack, Andy Richter, Michael Ian Black as well as prominent Democratic politicians such as Elizabeth Warren, Pramila Jayapal and Adam Schiff have taken to social media to decry the decision. Some entertainment industry figures and politicians have already claimed that CBS’ move was linked to parent company Paramount Global’s merger with Skydance Media, with the deal seeking regulatory approval from the Trump administration. Colbert has been among the most prominent critics of Donald Trump on television, and has arguably built his commanding lead in the late night ratings for more effectively skewering the president than some of his rivals.

On Instagram, under the video of Colbert’s monologue announcing the news,...

Jon Batiste Makes ‘Americana Blues Statement’ on Rootsy New Album ‘Big Money’
Image
As a teenage musician, Jon Batiste used to call himself “a new-age blues artist.” Now, many genre-jumps later, he’s taking a deeply enjoyable left turn towards roots music on his seventh studio album, Aug. 22’s Big Money — and reminding the world he’s always been a bluesman at heart. “I’m just now making an explicit Americana blues statement,” Batiste says, “but for me, it’s at the beginning. It’s always the undercurrent. I think about everything that I have done, and it all is in some way...

Oscars: Mariska Hargitay’s Jayne Mansfield Doc ‘My Mom Jayne’ Has Qualified, Campaign to Come (Exclusive)
Image
My Mom Jayne, Mariska Hargitay’s documentary about her late mom Jayne Mansfield, which dropped on HBO on June 27, became the talk of the town in recent days as people caught up with it over the July 4 weekend. And Hargitay’s film directorial debut is likely to remain a topic of conversation over the coming months because, The Hollywood Reporter can report, it received an Oscar-qualifying theatrical run the week before it hit cable — quietly screening at the Laemmle NoHo 7 in North Hollywood from June 20-26, and thereby meeting the Academy’s documentary feature Oscar eligibility requirement of a one-week run in at least one of several major cities — and Hargitay and Co. are committed to giving it a real grassroots push this awards season.

The Academy’s 693-member documentary branch, which solely determines the best documentary feature Oscar shortlist and nominees, has, in recent years, demonstrated an aversion to...

‘We Just Made It Up!’: Robert Randolph Announces Wild-Style Solo Album
Image
Talking with Rolling Stone last year, Robert Randolph recalled the unusual complaint he received when he was working on a new album in LA. Apparently, the bass amplifier he and producer Shooter Jennings had placed in a hallway was too loud, and a couple of people in the building — T Bone Burnett and Robbie Robertson — told a receptionist it was too loud. As Randolph said, Robertson walked into the studio and said, “Oh, that’s you down here? You guys are getting funky in here.”

Robertson, who passed away last year,...

2026 Grammy predictions: Album of the Year
Image
For several years, the nominees for Album of the Year were decided by secretive nomination review committees, but the Recording Academy got rid of most of those in 2021 after The Weeknd's notorious shutout, so now the decisions are made entirely by members at large. Scroll down for our latest odds, which are based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. Those odds are constantly changing, so we'll be updating this list throughout the season.

SEEGrammy Album of the Year: All the Winners in Grammy Awards History

In 2022, the first year without the committees, the Grammys expanded Album of the Year to 10 nominations (though that has since been contracted back to eight). The 2022 winner ended up being We Are by Jon Batiste, which was a surprise against higher-profile hits. So even without the committees to uplift underdog recordings, the academy's 13,000 voters don't necessarily default to the most popular nominee.

Musician Jon Batiste and Journalist Suleika Jaouad on American Symphony Documentary
Image
In late 2021, as the world was slowly emerging from the Covid pandemic, musician Jon Batiste sat down with documentary filmmaker Matthew Heineman to discuss the seed of an idea. What if the two created a film about the making of Batiste’s upcoming symphony at Carnegie Hall?

The result is American Symphony, the compelling new documentary that follows Batiste as he sets out to make the most significant work of his career, which he’d envisioned as a classical piece that would blend a multitude of genres. Although staging the ambitious symphony was the initial focus of the film, the shared emotional journey of Batiste and his wife, New York Times best-selling author and Emmy-winning journalist Suleika Jaouad, quickly moved to the forefront. The film is marked by career triumphs and great personal travails: At the outset of his creative voyage, Batiste receives a record 11 Grammy nominations, but he also...

Variety’s Tenpercenteries Returns: Signings, Deals and Dish About Hollywood’s Top Talent Agencies and Management Firms
Image
Editor’s note: Variety has revived its “Tenpercenteries” column that chronicles the inner-workings and client signings of Hollywood’s top talent agencies and management firms. Tenpercenteries was a staple of Variety from the mid-1990s through the early 2010s. We’re happy to bring it back with a heightened focus on deals and dish involving showbiz’s top talent representation firms.

The young (and the frugal) staff members at United Talent Agency were up in arms last week, sources told Tenpercenteries, over news from leadership that the company was suspending its free lunch service.

What began as a post-pandemic perk to lure staff back into the office had miraculously and generously lasted until 2025. UTA was serving up dishes from Leora, the restaurant that sits in the agency’s shadow in Beverly Hills. A turkey club sandwich will run you $15 and a sesame ginger salad sets you back $22.

The free chow was served daily,...

Oscars Best Original Score breakdown: ‘The Brutalist’ has slight edge in a wide-open race
Image
The Oscar race for Best Original Score has focused on two top contenders. Here’s a breakdown of the race.

SEEHow Kieran Culkin could end this 12-year Oscar streak Frontrunner: The Brutalist, by Daniel Blumberg

This is one of four scores in this category that swept the nominations with bids from the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and Society of Composers and Lyricists (Scl) — the others are Conclave, Emilia Pérez, and The Wild Robot. Blumberg’s score won the BAFTA, another strong sign in his favor. In addition, this music has won awards from the Washington, D.C., Area Film Critics Association, the Boston Society of Film Critics, the New York Film Critics Online, and the Philadelphia Film Critics Circle, to name a few. And while Blumberg doesn’t have any Oscar priors — this is his first nomination — one could certainly argue that he has composed the most conspicuous orchestral score.

Why Was Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show So Controversial?
Image
Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance at Sunday’s Super Bowl was the most-watched in history, with more than 133 million people tuning in — and it also may have been the most uncompromising. In a slot that every previous artist has reserved mostly for greatest hits, Lamar only played bits of two older songs, focusing instead on his excellent new album, Gnx, and his Drake-eviscerating smash, “Not Like Us.”

On the latest episode of Rolling Stone Music Now, Brittany Spanos and Rob Sheffield join host Brian Hiatt to break down the...

Jon Batiste on His Super Bowl Performance and How Music Can Transcend America’s Divide
Image
When Jon Batiste performed the national anthem in front of millions of Americans watching the Super Bowl Lix broadcast from New Orleans’ Superdome, he paid homage to generations both past and present on the hallowed stage.

For the first time in the NFL’s championship history, Batiste weaved a sample into his rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner”: the Triggerman beat, first taken as a loop from a 1986 song by the Showboys and subsequently used on decades of hip-hop, bounce, and dance music, from Juvenile’s “Back Dat Azz Up” to Beyoncé’s Renaissance.

Donald Trump Says He’s Naming Ric Grenell To Serve As Acting Executive Director Of The Kennedy Center — Update
Image
Updated, with additional comment: Donald Trump continued his takeover of the Kennedy Center today, as he named loyalist Ric Grenell to serve as interim executive director.

Trump wrote on Truth Social, “I am pleased to announce that Ric Grenell will serve as the Interim Executive Director of The Kennedy Center. Ric shares my Vision for a Golden Age of American Arts and Culture, and will be overseeing the daily operations of the Center. No More Drag Shows, Or Other Anti-american Propaganda — Only The Best. Ric, Welcome To Show Business!”

There is no executive director position at the Kennedy Center. Deborah Rutter currently serves as president of the arts institution, and it is unclear what her status is. In January, she announced plans to step down at the end of the year.

Grenell served as U.S. ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence in Trump’s first administration.

Trump Trolls Taylor Swift for Getting Booed at Super Bowl
Image
Donald Trump and Taylor Swift were both in attendance at Super Bowl Lix and, by all accounts, had widely different receptions. After being shown on the big screen during Jon Batiste’s performance of the National Anthem, Trump appeared to draw mostly applause. Swift, on the other hand, was loudly jeered by Eagles fans in the crowd.

Trump himself took notice and mocked Swift on his social media platform, Truth Social, including by sharing a meme that read, “Trump gets massive cheers at the Super Bowl while Taylor Swift gets booed – The world is healing!” In another post, he wrote, “The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift. She got Booed out of the Stadium. Maga is very unforgiving!”

There’s no love lost between Swift and Trump, as the pop star endorsed Joe Biden for president in 2020 and Kamala Harris in...

Philadelphia Eagles Beat Kansas City Chiefs to Win Super Bowl Lix
Image
The Philadelphia Eagles got their payback Sunday night.

Two years after being beaten by the Kansas City Chiefs at Super Bowl Lviii, the Eagles turned the tables and easily triumphed over Kc by a score of 40-22 to win Super Bowl Lix.

The Eagles began celebrating with two minutes and 52 seconds still left in the game, surprising head coach Nick Sirianni with a Gatorade dump.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was named Mvp.

The Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles faced off again after meeting up in the big game two years ago, when the Chiefs prevailed in a nail-biter that ended in a score of 38-35.

This was the Chiefs’ third straight Super Bowl after winning in both 2023 and 2024. The Chiefs triumphed over the San Francisco 49ers last year. They also won in 1970 and in 2020.

This marked the second time in three years that the Eagles made it to the game,...
