Exclusive: Wscripted has unveiled its fifth Cannes Screenplay List, in partnership with global streamer and distributor Mubi.

The 2025 list showcases projects from 14 female and non-binary filmmakers and screenwriters seeking producing and financing partners. (scroll down for full list).

Among the nominees is Emmy-nominated Kenyan American filmmaker Peres Owino, who co-wrote Netflix’s African Queens – Njinga and Queen Cleopatra, and is now developing feature film The Basket Weaver, from her own original screenplay.

The list also features New York writer, comedian, and singer-songwriter Liz Nico and L.A.-based trans writer, director and artist Jules Byrne, whose debut feature Summer of 69 premiered at this year’s SXSW as a Hulu original film. The pair are collaborating on rom-com feature Jane Hates Miranda.

Further nominees include Filipina American actor, filmmaker, and Sundance fellow Kristine Gerolaga, with horror feature Lamok.

Netflix's Emmy Award-winning Baby Reindeer won two BAFTA TV Craft Awards on Sunday, including best writing for a drama for Richard Gadd.

Overall, the Netflix limited series landed eight bids between the craft and TV awards ceremony, including Best Limited Drama, a lead actor nomination for Gadd, and two supporting actress nominations for Jessica Gunning and Nava Mau. The limited series won several honors last year and throughout the winter, including Emmy Award wins for Gadd and Gunning, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award victory for Gunning.

Other winners at the BAFTA Craft Awards included Slow Horses with two wins (sound and editing), Shogun with one victory (for photography and lighting), and Bad Sisters (for music).

BAFTA boss Jane Millichip has celebrated a British TV industry in “rude health” but said “choppy waters” could arise “if we lose control of our value chain.”

Speaking to Deadline as the likes of Baby Reindeer, Rivals and Mr Bates vs the Post Office were rewarded with multiple BAFTA TV noms, Millichip said the industry “has to look at” options to address the UK drama funding crisis such as improved tax credits, streamer levies or more support for the freelance community.

Nava Mau earned an Emmy nomination (in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category) for her breakthrough performance as the lead character’s love interest Teri in the hit Netflix series Baby Reindeer, and was named as a 2024 BAFTA Breakthrough cohort. We’ve previously heard that she will be following up her Baby Reindeer success with a role on the final season of the Netflix series You, and now Deadline has broken the news that she’s set to star in the comedic thriller The Dregs – which has something to do with a cursed wine bottle.

Before appearing on Baby Reindeer, Mau played the role of Ana on 16 episodes of the Max streaming series Generation. (16 episodes also happens to have been the show’s full run.)

Set in Tuscany, The Dregs will mark the directorial debut of writer Connor Martin. Filming is expected to begin in Italy next March.

In Season 33 of DWTS, dancing pro, Gleb Savchenko, and model, Brooks Nader, gained backlash from fans of the dance competition due to their flirty behavior. Their "showmance" turned viewers off, with people criticizing their over-the-top chemistry as being "cringe-worthy" instead of inspiring. The pair, who loved to share flirty TikTok videos, split about a week after being eliminated from the competition, according to US Weekly.

The 2023 Emmy Awards were pushed from their usual September date to January 2024 due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes, making Sunday’s Emmys the second of this calendar year. Any series or made-for-tv film entries at these awards must have been released between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024.

Netflix’s stalker drama “Baby Reindeer” won four Emmys at Sunday night’s ceremony.

Along with triumphing in the limited or anthology series category, it earned trophies for Richard Gadd as a writer and lead actor as well Jessica Gunning as a supporting actress.

Taking the stage for the third time as “Baby Reindeer” won the top prize, creator and star Richard Gadd noted that the industry has been in an economic “slump” — but that there’s a way out.

“I do believe no slump was ever broken without a willingness to take risks,” he said. “I think if ‘Baby Reindeer’ has proved anything, it’s that there’s no set formula to this. That you don’t need big stars, proven IP, long-running series, catch-all storytelling to have a hit.”

“The only constant across any success in television is good storytelling,” he continued. “Good storytelling that speaks to our times.

Jessica Gunning has just won her first Emmy Award for her portrayal of Martha in Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer.” Gunning was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her work, one of 11 total nominations for the show.

After its April premiere, “Baby Reindeer” became one of the buzziest shows of the summer, catapulted into the Netflix Top 10 and earning instant awards speculation for Gunning, creator and star Richard Gadd, and the series itself. The show received nominations at the 76th Annual Emmy Awards for its casting, costuming, directing, editing, and music supervision, as well as in the performance categories for Gunning, Gadd, Tom Goodman-Hill, and Nava Mau (in Gunning’s category). While walking the Emmys red carpet, Witherspoon stopped by to talk to comedian Heather McMahan for E! News, who asked the Legally Blonde star if she had watched any reality TV.

“I feel like I can’t catch up,” Witherspoon said about watching The Real Housewives.

Witherspoon noted, “But I did sit next to a Real Housewife on a flight recently.”

This particular tidbit even made her Big Little Lies co-star Laura Dern gasp. McMahan wanted the tea from Witherspoon, who asked, “Are we going to name names?”

“Baby Reindeer” star Nava Mau may be becoming a trans role model following the success of the Netflix drama and her Emmy nomination for her work on the show, but the actor isn’t ready to call herself an “activist.”

“I really shy away from that word because I think that people who are activists are often times involved with organizing and I deeply respect that work,” Mau told me Friday at the Television Academy’s Performer Nominee Celebration at The Wallis in Beverly Hills. “I tend to call myself an advocate.”
