A collaboration between Netflix and Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions, The Out-Laws is set in the fictional Philadelphia town of Oakleigh, but the movie wasn't actually filmed in Philadelphia. The Out-Laws has an all-star cast including Adam DeVine, Nina Dobrev, Pierce Brosnan, and Ellen Barkin, The Out-Laws follows Owen (DeVine) as the bank he manages is robbed in the lead-up to his wedding to Parker (Dobrev) and all signs point to her mysterious parents (Brosnan and Barkin) being the culprits.
The Out-Laws was released on Netflix on July 7th. With an engaging premise, blending elements of comedy films and heist movies, director Tyler Spindel delivers a chaotic action comedy with help from writers Evan Turner and Ben Zazove as well as a charming lead performance from DeVine. While set in a fictional Philadelphia town, The Out-Laws was actually filmed in and around the city now being dubbed as "The Hollywood of the South.

Plot: Owen Browning is a straight-laced bank manager about to marry the love of his life, Parker. When his bank is held up by the infamous Ghost Bandits during his wedding week, he believes his future in-laws who just arrived in town, are the infamous Out-Laws.
Review: There are few winners in this late phase of the Streaming Wars as accomplished as Adam Sandler. The former SNL funnyman went from box office superstar to a lucrative contract with Netflix, resulting in dozens of mediocre movies and very few good ones. Even when not starring in the films, Happy Madison Productions has released films of a similar ilk which are funny enough for ambient viewing but not nearly good enough for the big screen. The latest Happy Madison movie, The Out-Laws, starring Adam Devine as an average guy whose future in-laws are notorious bank robbers played by Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin.

The Out-Laws is a Happy Madison Production movie. While Adam Sandler is not present onscreen, his spirit looms large. The jokes are funny, but not wholly original or unexpected. The physical comedy is juvenile, but Adam DeVine’s commitment makes up for the cringe-worthy moments. Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin deserve so much more and have so much more to give, but the script — by Evan Turner and Ben Zazove — doesn’t give them anything to utilize their skills and star power properly. The Out-Laws is predictable and at times lazy. But as lazy as it may be, there is a decent comedic backbone that carries it to its inevitable end. Going in with low expectations is probably best because you will come out of it not feeling like you wasted 95 minutes of your day.

‘The Out-Laws’ Review: Adam Devine Tangles With Pierce Brosnan In Over-Stuffed Netflix Action Comedy
In 1979, Peter Falk and the late great Alan Arkin made the perfect odd couple in the classic action comedy The In-Laws. It even spawned a not-bad remake with Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks in 2003. The difference between those films, and a bit of an attempt to do something similar in the cleverly titled The Out-Laws, which starts streaming on Netflix today, is that those movies were genuinely funny –particularly the Arkin-Falk teaming. But this one, also a kind of Meet the Parents on steroids, relies far too heavily on nonstop and incessant action scenes to carry us through its 95-minute running time.
The fault here does not lie with its cast, which is pretty impressive overall. Basically this is a comedic vehicle for Adam Devine, who not only stars but also helped develop the Ben Zazove and Evan Turner script as well as producing with Happy Madison’s Adam Sandler and Allen Covert.

Like the chicken and the egg, it’s hard to know what came first for the new Adam Sandler-produced Netflix feature, The Out-Laws: Was it the title or the concept?
My gut would lean toward the former, so much does this watchable if forgettable crime comedy feel like an entire movie wrapped around a simple play on words. In case you somehow missed it, imagine for one second that your mysterious in-laws arrived in town on the brink of your wedding and turned out to be “out-laws.” Get it?
As silly as that sounds, the out-laws in question, played by Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin, manage to carry the concept to a few fun places, mostly because their characters — a pair of bank robbers named Billy and Lilly — truly look like they don’t give a shit. Compared to their yoga-teaching daughter, Parker (Nina Dobrev), and her fiancé,...

Tyler Spindel’s The Out-Laws is exactly the kind of film that streaming services have promised to showcase for years but have rarely delivered. Written by Ben Zazove and Evan Turner, it’s the sort of breezily pleasurable, mid-budget, and intimately scaled movie that used to be a staple of the video stores that streaming helped to kill.
Tightly wound bank manager Owen (Adam DeVine), on the eve of his nuptials to Parker (Nina Dobrev), finally meets her parents, Billy (Pierce Brosnan) and Lilly (Ellen Barkin), only for his excitement to quickly turn sour when his bank is robbed by bandits whom he strongly suspects are his future in-laws. Before Owen can confirm his suspicions, though, Billy and Lilly get their cover blown by a rival thief (Poorna Jagannathan), who takes Parker hostage to extort her parents, forcing them (and Owen) to commit further robberies to pay her ransom.

What if you managed a bank, and your fiancée’s folks turned out to be notorious bank robbers who saw their prospective son-in-law as the perfect patsy for their next hit? Not a bad setup for hijinks and hilarity. That’s what the filmmakers behind “The Out-Laws” are hoping, anyway. Produced by Adam Sandler (among others) and directed by Tyler Spindel, the not-so-original Netflix original plays like “Meet the Parents” crossed with “Fun with Dick and Jane.” Seeing as how the former inspired several sequels and the latter a remake, the situational comedy on offer is hardly fresh, though it still could (and should) have been funnier.

Just when we thought the world was safe from painfully bad Adam Sandler-linked comedies, The Out-Laws arrives, reminding audiences that even if Sandler’s tastes as an actor have evolved, his love for irritating, unfunny comedies has not.
In fairness, Sandler, whose film company Happy Madison produced The Out-Laws, probably deserves minimal blame for this debacle. Director Tyler Spindel, working from a script by Ben Zazove and Evan Turner, shoulders most of the blight, owing to heavy-handed direction, a boilerplate premise, and a script that squeezes its cast so hard, we hate to think of the bruising.
The Out-Laws follows the time-worn premise of all those wedding comedies where a hapless main character clashes with his future in-laws. The movie follows Owen (Adam DeVine), a handsome, if nerdy, bank manager on the verge of tying the knot with his fiancée, Parker (Nina Dobrev). As the wedding approaches, Owen’s parents,...

How would you react if you discovered that your fiancee's parents — who you have somehow never met – are actually internationally infamous criminals? That's the situation faced by Adam Devine's character in new Netflix action comedy The Out-Laws, which also features Pierce Brosnan, Ellen Barkin and Nina Dobrev.
Devine here plays mild-mannered bank manager Owen Browning, who is getting ready to marry Parker (Dobrev), the love of his life.
When he learns that her parents, Billy (Brosnan) and Lilly (Barkin) McDermott are coming to the wedding, he's initially excited, since this will finally be his chance to meet the people who have been "off the grid" since before he started seeing Parker. But that thrill soon turns to confusion and concern when he learns that they might just be in Ghost Bandits, responsible for a string of heists. And things become even more dangerous when it's further revealed that the...

Pierce Brosnan sneaks in a cheeky James Bond reference in the trailer for his new bank robbery comedy, The Out-laws. The British actor gained popularity with the 1980s NBC detective comedy Remington Steele before shooting to international stardom as Timothy Dalton's replacement for the James Bond franchise. Brosnan completed four successful entries in the spy-action film series, concluding with Die Another Day alongside Halle Berry, Toby Stephens, and Rosamund Pike.

Netflix’s The Out-Laws trailer features a bank robbery, car chase, an awkward meeting of potential in-laws, and a reference to James Bond #5. Plus, the trailer includes a very handsome Pierce Brosnan, a description that – according to Richard Kind – isn’t a compliment.

Meeting your partner’s parents can be challenging. Regardless of your confidence in your relationship, a wrong move with the parental units can spell disaster for your future. For Adam Devine‘s Owen Browning, he never banked on his fiancee’s parents being accomplished bank robbers. This hurdle is a tricky jump for Owen, a by-the-books bank manager, and all-around goofball. In Netflix‘s The Out-Laws trailer, Owen and his fiancee Parker (Nina Dobrev) discover Parker’s parents are the notorious Ghost Bandits, and they need the couple’s help to get them out of a jam.

A casual question, uttered by a fellow film critic, as we waited in line at the Sherlock Gnomes (2018) Family Gala held at the newly refurbished Empire cinema in London’s Leicester Square. Well, I’ll admit it passed me by, the Bard’s classic tale of two ill-fated lovers from warring households – reimagined as a back-garden family adventure between bickering red and blue ornamental figurines. And Mankini, a garden gnome who’s all about tanning his bum cheeks. Oh, what would the Swan of Avon say? But it was memorable enough for Sir Elton John and David Furnish’s Rocket Pictures to crack open the Apple contacts again and get the band back together for a silly, gag-laden, back-garden mashup, riffing from the literary works of detective Sherlock Homes.
