Netflix's Hit Superhero Series 'Supacell' Gets Season 2 Delay
Image
It’s bad news for fans of one of Netflix’s most popular shows, as a new production update suggests we could be waiting some time before the confirmed second season ever rolls around. Debuting back in June last year, the first season of the sci-fi superhero series Supacelltook audiences by storm, landing a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and finding millions of viewers as it took the #1 spot in Netflix's global Top 10.

Created and written by Andrew "Rapman" Onwubolu, Supacell stars Tosin Cole, Adelayo Adedayo, Josh Tedeku, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Calvin Demba, Ghetts, Digga D, and Eddie Marsan, and strives to tell a different kind of superhero story, dropping audiences in London where several normal people begin to exhibit strange powers.

Supacell was a huge success with both critics and audiences alike, with the show being renewed for a second season (a rarity on Netflix) back in August.

Netflix's 'Supacell' Gets Dark Season 2 Tease From Rapman During BAFTAs
Image
It is rare for a TV show to land a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score that sticks, but a Netflix take on the superhero genre, Supacell, was one of those rare projects that did everything right. Although it took a while for Season 2 to be greenlit by the streamer, fans finally learned the fate of the show in August 2024, but since then, updates have been scarce. Thanks to Radio Times, however, we have a slightly better idea of what to expect from the next season.

Supacell was created and written by Rapman (Andrew Onwubolu), and stars Tosin Cole, Adelayo Adedayo, Josh Tedeku, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Calvin Demba, Ghetts, Digga D, and Eddie Marsan. The show doesn’t tell a conventional superhero story that plays out in Marvel and DC movies, and that led to an incredibly well-received first season. You can check out the official synopsis below.

7 Netflix shows you probably missed in 2024
Image
While there are a bunch of good Netflix shows coming in 2025, there were also a lot of good Netflix shows that were overlooked last year. We shared a list of the seven best Netflix shows you might have missed in 2024.

Overall, 2024 was a challenging year for new TV and film. Because Netflix and the other studios were unable to make a deal with the actors' and writers' unions, TV production was delayed for the majority of 2023. So, in 2024, there simply were fewer shows than fans were expecting. And yet, there were still several underrated series fans needed to watch. Well, now, it's time to get caught up before Netflix starts dropping even more big shows in 2025.

For some reason, Adeel Akhtar stars in three of the seven Netflix shows I picked. That was not intentional, but my guy is an incredible actor! Everything he's in is good!

Let's get the...

Fallout and the 7 most underrated shows of 2024
Image
We're getting closer to the end of the year, which means we're running out of time to highlight some of the most underrated shows of the year. For me, the end of the year is always a good time to look back and show a little love to the shows that didn't quite get the response, viewership, or respect from viewers, fans, and critics that they deserved.

If you missed any of the eight underrated shows of 2024, I highly recommend you give them a try when you have a chance. I guarantee you won't be too disappointed.

For this list, I only included new shows. Of course, there are a lot of underrated returning shows that had new seasons in 2024, but I wanted to share the new shows from 2024 that deserved more love and popularity from fans and critics!

Let's get the list started with one of the best new shows of the year,...

Nadine Mills: Where You've Seen The Supacell Actress Before
Nadine Mills
Nadine Mills is a name thats starting to make waves, especially with her stand-out role in Supacell, and its not hard to see why. Born and raised in London, Mills discovered her passion for acting while watching shows like Sister Sister and Moesha. Those sitcoms, full of relatable, funny, and complex Black characters, were her first motivation to build her own career on screen (via Verite):

in the UK, I would say especially for Black people we didnt have much to aspire to, but the U.S. was always something that we had, so seeing Sister Sister, Moesha, and those shows [made me realize that] This is something I can really do. I think its when I booked my first short film and I was like Ah, okay, this can genuinely be a career. That really sparked the hunger to actually go for [acting] as a career.

Her journey to get where she is today wasnt easy.

Marvel Needs To Learn 1 Major Lesson From Netflix's Superhero Show With 100% Rt Score
Image
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been the biggest thing in superhero storytelling for over a decade, and with a full slate of upcoming MCU Phase 5 and 6 films, is not likely to give up that position anytime soon. The genre however can only persist if it is allowed to grow, and a significant component that makes that possible is competitors. The Dcu's first chapter "Gods and Monsters" will contribute to the overall superhero genre, and series like The Boys have given subversive looks at the same ideas and themes. This trend continues with a new Netflix series.

Marvel has had mixed success with television, but they appear to be working to correct this. With at least 12 MCU TV shows coming, it is essential that the studio reflect on what they have done right and wrong. Daredevil: Born Again went through a creative overhaul near the end of its production to ensure...

How 'Supacell's Shocking Finale Sets Up a Season 2
Image
Supacell took the world by storm when it first premiered, especially since it showed that there's still room for great stories within the superhero genre. The Rapman-created show is also one of the few Netflix shows to reach 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning that its Season 2 renewal isn't all that surprising. Anyone who's watched Supacell can tell you that its story is a major part of its draw, as five Black residents of South London discover they have superpowers. Time traveler Michael (Tosin Cole), psychic Sabrina (Nadine Mills), super-strong Andre (Eric Kofi-Abrefa), speedster Rodney (Calvin Demba), and invisible gang leader "Tazer" (Josh Tedeku) soon find themselves united against a mysterious organization that's been hunting others like them, forming the bulk of Season 1's story. But like any good superhero tale, twists and turns lay the groundwork for a second season.

‘Supacell’ Renewed for Second Season at Netflix
Image
Netflix is powering up a second season of Supacell.

The streamer has renewed the series about five Black people in South London who unexpectedly develop superpowers. Supacell, created by Rapman, premiered on June 27 and has been a fixture in Netflix’s internal top 10 list of English-language series since its debut.

Netflix announced the renewal Tuesday on its social media channels.

Supacell has received largely favorable reviews; The Hollywood Reporter critic Daniel Fienberg wrote that “The [superhero] genre is the genre, but the tone and feel that Rapman sets and the characters he builds out are different enough to be worthwhile.”

In an interview with THR, Rapman — who also served as showrunner on Supacell and directed three of the six episodes — said he never thought of the series as a superhero show. “Because I wasn’t trying to call them superheroes, it already took me down a different route. They’re all flawed individuals,...

Supacell Will Return for Season 2
Image
You don’t need time-traveling abilities to see if there’ll be moreSupacell –– because Netflix has officially announced that Season 2 is on the way.

The epic story of five extraordinary South Londoners ended its first season with a heartbreaking stunner. “When I come back, they’re all gonna fucking pay,” Michael (Tosin Cole) vows to his superpowered allies Andre (Eric Kofi Abrefa), Rodney (Calvin Demba), Sabrina (Nadine Mills), and Tazer (Josh Tedeku). The “they” Michael’s referencing are a shadowy organization that’s been stalking, manipulating, and, in some cases, killing supacell holders.

For the show’screator, Rapman, what comes next in the story isn’t a mystery. “I’ve always had it [mapped out] to Season 3. I know how Season 2 ends,” he told Tudum before the series premiered, adding, “I’ve got stuff planned for this story. I’ve had this in my head for years, so I’m ready to go.

Why Does Everyone Sleep So Hard in Supacell?
Image
Grab your English-to-English dictionary, because Netflixs Supacell has been passed the torch as the next frenemy affair to deal with a conspiracy against the Black community. Black people are going missing and a strange collective of white people has something to do with it. Each character of an all-Black ensemble of South Londoners wields a newfound superpower (or two), and they are all being targeted for it. Michael (Tosin Cole), Sabrina (Nadine Mills), Tazer (Josh Tedeku), Rodney (Calvin Demba), and Andre (Eric Kofi-Abrefa) must find each other in order to stop a group of supernaturally powered hooded foes from harming Michaels fiance, Dionne (Adelayo Adedayo). Though more drama than comedy, series creator Rapman presents an engaging commentary on Black-on-Black crime and unjust racial power dynamics.

‘Supacell’ Creator on George Floyd Inspiring His Hit Netflix Series and Hopes for Season 2
Image
[This story contains spoilers from season one of Supacell.]

Supacell is, in many ways, a love letter to drama, sci-fi, Black talent and south London — but it is not a superhero story.

That’s what its showrunner, Rapman, wants fans to know. The six-part series has stormed into Netflix‘s most-watched programs this month and currently sits in the top spot on its global television list, having accrued nearly 12 million views.

Rapman — or “Raps” as he says he’s known among friends and colleagues — is a quadruple threat. The Briton, whose real name is Andrew Onwubolu, is a rapper, record producer, screenwriter and director. Finding fame on YouTube through the medium of rap, the 35-year-old made his writing and directorial debut with the 2019 feature Blue Story, a musical crime drama that earned international distribution through Paramount. Around that same time, Rapman began concocting a piece of television that asked the question: “What if there was a sci-fi where...

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F stays atop the Netflix charts as the sci-fi drama Supacell dominates TV views
Image
Mark Molloy’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is doing the Neutron Dance atop other films in Netflix‘s library for the second consecutive week! According to Netflix, the sequel starring Eddie Murphy in one of his most iconic roles held the top spot on the English Films List with 22.2M views. Nostalgia is mighty when it comes to racking up numbers on Netflix. It helps that Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is fun and features a cast of veteran actors reliving the glory days that helped make them household names. Regardless of the reason, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is a hit, and Murphy deserves kudos for his efforts to make Axel’s latest case a thrilling revival.

A Family Affair, starring Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King, claimed the #2 spot with 11.6M views. The romantic comedy about love, sex, and identity resonates with a broad audience, making...

The Boys Fans Need to Watch This Netflix Series
Image
Supacell is a new, diverse superhero show about regular people gaining superpowers and dealing with their new abilities. The show centers on Black British characters facing social issues like sickle cell disease, subverting genre expectations. Supacell's success stems from its focus on real-world problems while using fantastical elements to tell its story.

Prime Video's The Boys is one of a kind. After all, there's no other show about the corporate-sponsored celebrity superheroes who are the de facto leaders of the country and the gang of men and women trying to stop them. But recently there has been a show that takes up The Boys' theme of superheroes. Of course, it's not as if this is unusual. Plenty of shows have done their takes on what people with superpowers can do, and what people without superpowers will do against them. However, it's unusual for a show to have those superpowers...

Netflix’s New Superhero Series, ‘Supacell,’ Is a Proper Hit, Set to Rival ‘The Boys’
Image
Netflix is known as the biggest streaming service out there, with the largest number of subscribers and, of course, the largest number of original content. Whether you want movies, series, or animated series, regardless of the genre, Netflix is definitely going to have something for you to enjoy.

While the superhero genre has mostly been on the big screen, with Disney (MCU) and Warner (Dcu) being the biggest players on the market, superhero series are also present, but Disney and Amazon (with The Boys) are the biggest players in that aspect. Or, they have been, at least, until late June.

On June 27, 2024, Netflix released the superhero series Supacell, whose first season consists of six episodes. Focused on Black characters, the series has been praised by many and is slowly becoming a proper hit around the world after having taken the United Kingdom by storm. Supacell, a new Netflix superhero show, is gaining global popularity with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and now a place on Netflix's global charts. The series focuses on a group of Black South Londoners with superpowers, connected by their history of sickle cell disease. Created and directed by Rapman, the show's success may lead to a season 2.

Supacell, the new Netflix superhero show with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, is shaping up to be a global hit. Although the superhero genre is fairly established on the big screen, with the MCU and the Dcu taking the lead, the television streaming landscape has been more experimental. Prime Video has The Boys and Invincible. Hulu has the adult comedy Extraordinary, while HBO's The Franchise will debut later this year. Now, after the high-profile disappointment of its Jupiter's Legacy adaptation, Netflix seems to have success with the British thriller Supacell.

Since it arrived...

Supacell Season 2 Gets Candid Update From Creator
Image
Warning: General spoilers for the Supacell season 1 ending.

Supacell creator Rapman wants to make multiple seasons, including a three-season plan. The show's success depends on viewership, as Netflix will decide if it continues. Supacell is a British super-powered thriller about a group of Black South Londoners with sickle cell disease.

The creator of Supacell candidly responds to the possibility of season 2. Debuting in late June on Netflix and consisting of six episodes, the British superhero thriller series focuses on a group of five ordinary people who unexpectedly develop superpowers. This group has little in common except for a few details. The first is that they are all Black South Londoners. The second is that they have a history of sickle cell disease and have to fend off entrapment by a secret organization.

In an interview with Unilad, creator Rapman spoke about the possibility of Supacell season 2. Rapman, who both wrote...

Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Supacell (2024)

Supacell's season 1 finale sets up an even better plot for season 2, revealing Victoria as the main antagonist. The Hooded Figures, led by Krazy, are revealed to be a gang working for Ray and Victoria, who research superpowered people with sickle cell disease.

Though still relatively new to the television screen, Mills is not a stranger. Her previous roles include Adrienne in 2022's The Pay Day, Arinata in 2019's The Strangers, and Martina in 2016's The Weekend.

She also appeared in two episodes of Sliced, one in Season 1 (2019) and one in Season 2 (2021). This was her only other television role before 2024's Supacell.

Breaking Baz: ‘Supacell’s Rapman Utilized His Own Superpower To Survive Making Earthshaking Netflix Superhero Drama
Image
Exclusive: Rapman utilized a superpower of his own — one that didn’t require him to don figure-hugging spandex tights and a cape — to survive the setbacks he encountered making the earthshaking new Netflix drama Supacell that began streaming Thursday.

“My superpower is discipline,” he declares.

Having an indomitable will comes in handy, too.

Rapman required his superpower to be at full throttle to help him wind his way through a thicket of obstacles.

For starters, he began the process in 2020, the year the pandemic hit everything. There were often heated and frank discussions over writers, special effects (the usual), and two composers came and went before he persuaded Netflix to let him chime with a third, Sillkey, the songwriter, producer and musician.

Having persuaded commissioners at Netflix to develop his idea of a drama about a group of regular people in south London who become mysteriously afflicted — because it’s like an illness — with superpowers,...

Netflix’s ‘Supacell’ Is a Bold and Daring Drama About Black Superheroes: TV Review
Image
In his new Netflix series, “Supacell,” creator Rapman examines the lives of five ordinary Black South Londoners who develop unexpected superpowers. Though the excitement of supernatural abilities and the magic of science fiction ripple across the show, the series also explores major themes that disproportionately affect Black people, including human trafficking, extreme surveillance, pervasive global anti-Blackness and predatory medical practices.

“Supacell” opens with a distressing event. An older Black woman is seen running down a dark corridor dressed only in a hospital gown. As she steps toward the sunlight, she is gunned down. Her limp body is then dragged back through the facility as prisoners — all Black people — look on in horror from glass cells. From there, the setting transitions into more familiar territory. Viewers find themselves on the modern streets of South London, where we meet Michael (a stellar Tosin Cole), a package delivery courier anxious about proposing to his long-term girlfriend,...

Supacell
Image
Streaming on: Netflix

Episodes viewed: 6 of 6

Supacell scenes occur, as perhaps all scenes should, outside Bargain Booze and Wimpy. You can practically smell the knickerbocker glories. Set and shot in South London, with a predominantly Black cast, the action – the gang violence, the marriage proposals, the drug deals, the super-powered throwdowns – takes place on the estates, on the streets and in the clubs, in Peckham, Lewisham, Brixton, Camberwell. It’s genuinely homegrown, a tribute to creator and writer Rapman’s roots and life experience, and that pays off in practically every shot. It’s almost shocking to see something like this today, a drama that dwells in such a sandbox and doesn’t feel like it’s been made by committee — it’s an unfiltered vision, a defibrillator of a show helping to bring an increasingly spluttering genre back to life.

When he named himself Rapman years ago, it’s...

Supacell Review: Black British Sci-Fi Would Captivate Even Without the Superpowers
Image
This spoiler-free review is based on all six episodes.

Movie superheroes are intrinsically tied to comic books. The language, the shape of the narrative arcs and the visuals are nearly always either inspired by or reacting against the genre as established in four colours. Even supposedly grounded and gritty takes like M Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable use Bruce Willis’s poncho to signify a cape, with every shot framed to look like a comic book panel.

The most faithful screen realization of that imagery is usually the lavish CGI cinema spectacle, with TV all too often seen as its poor relation. The truth is, TV superheroism is now a genre all of its own, with its own tropes, rules and language that have for the most part left the comics far behind.

Netflix’s Supacell, written and directed by rapper, record producer and director, Rapman is best seen within the...

‘Supacell’ Review: Netflix’s South London Superhero Drama Has Potential Despite Its Familiarity
Image
Going back to the immigrant/foundling who became Superman, the superhero genre has often been used as an exploration of what happens when people from variably disenfranchised groups find themselves with unexpected levels of power. Whether the result leads to enhanced altruism or diabolical megalomania is the difference between a hero and a villain.

Not all audiences are so eager to read for subtext, which has led to recent stories that push the subtext to the surface and the superpowers occasionally to the background, whether the goal is to make stubborn pre-existing audiences get the point (see X-Men ’97), to make an audience that probably never watched in the first place get the point (Amazon’s short-lived The Power) or to make a low-iq potato get the point (season four of The Boys)

It’s the genre storytelling equivalent of a bacon-wrapped date. I’ll leave it for you to decide,...

Supacell | Trailer released for Netflix superhero series from Rapman
Rapman
Supacell is a British superhero series heading to Netflix in June from Rapman, and here’s the trailer.

While America generally has the monopoly on superhero films, Britain has had its fair share of caped crusaders over the years.

The most recent example is Emma Moran’s Extraordinary, which is now available to watch on Itvx. From 2009 to 2013, Howard Overman achieved huge success with five series of irreverent comedy drama Misfits. Drew Pearce, who went on to co-write Iron Man 3 with Shane Black, began his career writing the little seen superhero sitcom No Heroics in 2008.

Perhaps the biggest shame, though, is that the film adaptation of clasic 1970s cartoon Bananaman, which was voiced by Bill Oddie, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden, also known as The Goodies, never materialised, though a stage musical premiered at the Southwark Playhouse in 2017.

Netflix drama Supacell is the next to have a go, and...
