‘Pretty Little Liars’ Secures Bali-Set Asian Remake Via Pccw-Owned Digital Platform Viu

Pretty Little Liars is getting an Asian remake after Warner Bros struck a deal with pan-regional digital service Viu.

The teen drama, which ran for seven seasons on ABC Family and Freeform, is to be localized in Bahasa and filmed in Bali as part of the Indonesian and Malaysian adaptation. Set in the fictional town of Amerta, the series will be directed by The Night Bus filmmaker Emil Heradi.

Similar to the U.S. version, it follows a group of four estranged undergrads whose group had fallen apart when their former leader went missing. The girls come back together in the face of danger, when they begin receiving messages from a mysterious figure known as “A”, who threatens to expose their darkest secrets.

Anya Geraldine stars as Hanna, Eyka Farhana as Ema, Valerie Thomas as Sabrina, Shindy Huang as Aria, and Yuki Kato as Alissa.

Viu teams with Warner Bros for Bahasa remake of ‘Pretty Little Liars’
Filmed entirely in Bali, the remake is a co-production between Indonesia and Malaysia.

Hong Kong-based regional streaming service Viu is collaborating with Warner Bros International Television Production on a Bahasa-language remake of Pretty Little Liars.

Produced by Viu in Indonesia and Malaysia, both of which are Bahasa-speaking countries, the series will be streamed simultaneously across all of Viu’s 17 markets later this year.

Both the Golden Mulberry audience award and Black Mulberry award went to Jang Joon-hwan’s democracy movement drama.

The 20th Far East Film Festival (Feff) in Udine wrapped this weekend (April 28) with Jang Joon-hwan’s Korean democracy movement drama 1987: When The Day Comes winning both the Golden Mulberry audience award and the Black Mulberry award voted on by Black Dragon pass holders.

Ueda Shinichiro’s Japanese zombie movie One Cut Of The Dead, which made its world premiere in Udine, came in second for the audience award.

Ryoo Seung-wan’s Korean historical drama The Battleship Island: Director’s Cut followed.

Celebrating its 20th edition, the Far East Film Festival (Feff) in Udine, Italy is set to open with Korean espionage thriller Steel Rain and the world premiere of Nam Ron’s Malaysian crime drama Crossroads: One Two Jaga on April 20.
