In 2020 Paul co-wrote and produced the romantic comedy Kaalgat Karel. The film was released in South African cinemas in September 2021 and has been selected for a number of international film festivals including the Phoenix International Genre Film Festival in the US and Boden International Film Festival in Sweden. The film won Best Film awards at the Poor Life Choices Comedy Film Festival in Los Angeles, the Gelos Comedy Film Festival in Moscow, the Lit Laughs Festival in the UK, as well as Best Feature Screenplay at Writers Guild of South Africa Muse Awards.
Prior to Kaalgat Karel, Paul produced the feature Tess, released in South African cinemas in February 2017, together with Kim Williams. Tess has recently been picked up for international sales by The Little Film Company of Los Angeles/ London. The film won best South African Film at the Durban International Film Festival, as well as the Best Editing and Best Actress awards; and at the Silwerskermfees won the Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Actress awards.
In addition to feature films, Paul has also produced a number of documentaries, most notably 1994: The Bloody Miracle. This feature documentary, which counts down to South Africa's first democratic elections, was broadcast on eNCA and eTV throughout Africa as well as by the Netherlands' VPRO. The documentary won the audience award at the Durban International Film Festival and the South African Screenwriters' Guild award for best documentary script. The film opened the Nobel Peace Laureate Youth Summit, as well as the Watch Africa Festival in Wales, and was screened in several cities as part of the 'Freedom Tour' in the UK. 1994: The Bloody Miracle has been used extensively as a tool to spark debate, for instance by the Cypriot peace initiative and by the Young African Leader's Programme. Paul has also collaborated with the Nelson Mandela Foundation to screen the film at educational institutions throughout South Africa to initiate dialogue around democracy and the complexity of reconciliation. Paul's short film Orbis was selected for Hot Docs 2015 and his multiple award-winning documentary Forerunners (dir. Simon Wood), an examination of South Africa's new black middle class, was screened at IDFA and was broadcast by Al Jazeera.
Paul holds a degree from WITS in Politics and Industrial Sociology, and an MBA from the University of Stellenbosch.
