Sandra Oh made the trip to the DGA for Deadline’s Emmy Contenders event to talk about her new series, BBC America’s Killing Eve, which marks her first series regular role after spending 10 seasons as Dr. Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy.

“Immediately what struck me was the tone and Phoebe’s [Waller-Bridge, creator] unique and fresh voice. She was exploring the genre of thriller in a completely unique way,” Oh shared. “Also, the fact that is was a psychological thriller drama with an intense dance between these two characters of Eve and Villanelle, it was just so juicy.”

“The show gives a beautiful account of each character in a completely rounded way,” Oh added.

Based on the novels by Luke Jennings, the series centers on two women; Eve, a security services operative who fantasies about being a spy, and Villanelle (Jodie Comer), a talented killer who clings to the luxuries her violent job affords her.

“Killing Eve” could make a killing at the Emmys — specifically in Best Drama Actress. The BBC America series has two leading ladies, Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, and if they both get shortlisted, the category would feature two co-stars for the first time in 16 years.

The last time a show double-dipped in Best Drama Actress was “Six Feet Under” in 2002, when Frances Conroy and Rachel Griffiths lost to Allison Janney (“The West Wing”). Endeavor Content has sealed one of the most significant drama deals of this year’s MipTV, selling the Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Sandra Oh series “Killing Eve” to pay-tv giant Canal+ in France. The female-led espionage thriller has been one of the buzzed-about programs at this year’s market in Cannes.

The Sid Gentle Films-produced eight-parter stars Oh as a bored Mi-5 operative who becomes entangled in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with Villanelle, a brilliant female assassin played by Jodie Comer. The opening scene of BBC America’s new drama “Killing Eve” tells us everything we need to know for the rest of the season: that when it comes to Villanelle (Jodie Comer), the stylish and quirky assassin at the show’s center, expect the unexpected.

“Killing Eve,” adapted by showrunner Phoebe Waller-Bridge from Luke Jennings’ “Villanelle” novels, opens in a Viennese cafe with Villanelle peacefully eating ice cream (don’t worry, this isn’t a spoiler. It’s in the trailer, too). The cafe is pretty empty, except for a young girl with her mother. The two make eye contact, and Villanelle smirks at the child. On her way out, she knocks the little girl’s ice cream into her lap and keeps on walking.

Clearly this is not your average woman in her 20s.

“What that scene sets up is, like, the unexpected,” Comer told TheWrap in a recent interview. In fact, the entire show turns the spy vs. spy narrative on its head.

“I think the show is just full of the unexpected. It’s the last thing you expect Villanelle to do, is throw the ice cream on her, but she does,” the British actress continued. “I think what that scene sets up is you can see this person is, you know, they are totally their own person. They do what they want to do, and … without any consequences.”

Terrorizing a young girl for fun also gives us a glimpse into Villanelle’s head, and basically tells us everything we need to know about the assassin and psychopath. Even when she’s not killing, she’ll do whatever she feels like doing, whether or not someone else gets hurt. Villanelle seems to enjoy killing so much so that even her handler Konstantin (Kim Bodnia) starts to get concerned.

“Villanelle, you know, she has no remorse,” Comer said. “She does what she wants to do. She has her own rules.”

Comer said that one of Waller-Bridge’s goals was to avoid stereotypes, and to bring some levity to a show about, well, murder.

“The one thing that Phoebe had always said was that she didn’t want a heaviness,” Comer said. “These characters — especially Villanelle — goes against the stereotype. And Phoebe didn’t want Villanelle to always be so serious, and you know, kind of constrained … sometimes there would be like a line or a facial expression that would just totally flip the scene on its head.”

Comer added that “a lot of dramas right now are quite heavy, the material is quite dark,” but Villanelle “has that special little quirk that .. sets it off from the rest.”

BBC America knows a hit when it sees one.

The cable network has pulled the trigger on a second season of Killing Eve before the series even premieres.

The thriller stars Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy) as Eve, the person tasked with tracking down the elusive and deadly Villanelle (played by The White Princess' Jodie Comer.)

Both women go to extreme measures to get the upper hand on other and it leads to a chase through several countries as neither one of them stays in the one place for much time.

The series is based on novellas by Luke Jennings. It's unclear how many of the four novellas are covered on Killing Eve Season 1, but we will have more clarity when the series debuts.

BBC America’s “Killing Eve” has been selected for this year’s first-ever Canneseries TV festival competition — making it the only U.S. show in a field of ten international productions. “Killing Eve” will be up for one of six awards handed out on April 11, along side new series from Belgium, Germany, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Norway, South Korea, and Spain.

The ten shows will be vying for Best Music, Best Screenplay, Special Performance Prize, Best Performance and Best Series trophies.

As previously announced, author and producer Harlan Coben has been named jury president for the competition, which takes place April 7 to 11. The U.S.-based Coben will be joined on the panel by actress Paula Beer (Germany), screenwriter and director Audrey Fouché (France), actress Melisa Sözen (Turkey), composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer (Chile/Canada) and actor Michael K. Premiering Sunday, April 8 at 8/7c and adapted by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) from Luke Jennings’ novellas, Killing Eve centers on two women: Eve, a bored, whip-smart, pay-grade MI5 officer whose desk job doesn’t fulfill her fantasies of being a spy, and Villanelle (The White Princess‘ Jodie Comer), a mercurial, talented killer who clings to the luxuries her violent job affords her.

Dramatic thriller Killing Eve, starring Grey’s Anatomy alum Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer (The White Princess) will premiere at 8 Pm Sunday, April 8, BBC America announced today during its portion of the TCA winter press tour.
