'The Princess Bride' Musical Adds 'Frozen' "Let It Go" Songwriters and 'Hamilton' Producer
Image
If there is a movie that perfectly fits the term “beloved,” then The Princess Bride is pretty much it. The 1987 comical fantasy adventure by Rob Reiner has been a favorite movie of multiple generations and also has the honor of being a movie that both audiences and critics completely agreed is one of the best movies of all time. However, attempts to expand the franchise to the stage have been in theatrical development hell for almost 20 years, but have taken their first big step forward with the appointment of two very familiar and successful songwriters.

The Princess Bride stars Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, and an array of comical talent in minor roles, and, of course, Peter Falk and Fred Savage in the wraparound story. For anyone who does not know what The Princess Bride is about, the synopsis (which does not do it justice) reads:

It’s unclear exactly when or why Disney Theatrical and Yazbek left the project. Disney Theatrical declined comment; Deadline has reached out to Seller for further information.

‘Beetlejuice: The Musical’ Heads Back to Broadway This October for a 13-Week Resurrection
Image
The Netherworld-wide sensation returns. For the third time, the popular Beetlejuice: The Musical is coming back to the Broadway stage beginning in October, Deadline reports.

The 13-week resurrection of the Tony-nominated Beetlejuice: The Musical (read our review) kicks off October 8 at The Palace Theatre, and runs through January 3, 2026.

The musical’s official website details, “After haunting theatres all over North America, the national tour of Beetlejuice arrives at its final resting place: Broadway!

“Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film, this hilariously demented musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz, an unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book, an astonishing set, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld, Beetlejuice is “a feast for the eyes and soul!” (Entertainment Weekly). And under its uproarious surface, it’s a remarkably touching show about family,...

‘Beetlejuice’ Returning to Broadway for Third Run
Image
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice is returning to Broadway for the third time.

The first national tour of Beetlejuice The Musical will play at The Palace Theatre from Oct. 8 for a 13-week engagement through Jan. 3, 2026. The third return to Broadway is unusual (and in keeping with the plot of the show) as the musical’s two previous Broadway engagements were in the last five years and the production has had a bumpy trajectory.

The musical originally ran at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre from April 2019, and initially saw low ticket sales until its fortunes turned around, thanks in part to traction on social media and a successful Tonys performance. Despite the reversal in the production’s grosses, theater owners announced plans to force the show out of the theater by June 2020, to make room for The Music Man starring Hugh Jackman. Those plans were delayed by the pandemic, but Beetlejuice did vacate...

Jonathan Groff, Bobby Darin And The Art Of Doing It All – Deadline Tony Award Q&a
Image
This June, Jonathan Groff will have the rare chance to win Tony Awards in two consecutive years. If he repeats last year’s triumph for Merrily We Roll Along with one for this year’s Just In Time, he’ll join a very exclusive club of six Broadway greats: Laurie Metcalf, Judith Light, Stephen Spinella, Sandy Dennis, Gwen Verdon, and Shirley Booth.

For Groff, the two-in-a-row possibility, exciting enough, even has a hint more frisson: Just In Time, a biographical musical of Bobby Darin, marks a career first for the busy actor. “I’ve never been part of a project from its conception. Eight years ago this month, actually, Ted Chapin asked me to do a night of Bobby Darin music at the 92nd Street Y and I read this book called Dream Lovers: The Magnificent Shattered Lives of Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee, written by Dodd Darin, the son of Bobby and Sandy,...

Four-Time Tony Nominee Jonathan Groff on Eight-Year Journey to Become Bobby Darin and Spitting While Singing Quirk: “Nothing I Can Do About It”
Image
“It’s my first love,” Jonathan Groff tells The Hollywood Reporter, on why he returned to Broadway so soon after winning his first Tony Award for Merrily We Roll Along last year.

Now, Groff has received his fourth Tony nomination for playing singer-actor Bobby Darin in the jukebox musical, Just in Time. He has previously been nominated for his work in Hamilton and Spring Awakening. But this time, the experience is “unlike anything” before, as he’s been involved with the project for the last eight years and has learned how to embody the moves and persona of the legendary singer.

And the Mindhunter star is having a lot of fun doing it. At the top of the show, he introduces himself to the crowd as himself, which was Groff’s idea, and even warns the crowd that he might spit on them while singing, poking fun at his saliva-based...

Image
Winners of the 2025 Drama League Awards were announced today in a ceremony hosted by Emmy-winning NY1 reporter Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. In a competitive year for theater awards, both Maybe Happy Ending and Sunset Boulevard added important feathers to their caps on their march to the Tony Awards.

Nicole Scherzinger took home the Drama League’s highly coveted Distinguished Performance prize for her radical reinterpretation of Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. Actors can only win this catch-all performance award once in their careers.

Wayne Brady takes on new role away from Let’s Make a Deal
Image
While Wayne Brady regularly delights many fans on television as a game show host, he initially started with improv comedy and portraying different characters.

He took his talents to Whose Line Is It Anyways? and Let’s Make a Deal, where he is known for keeping the show entertaining with co-stars and contestants.

Viewers saw Wayne appear in a reality television series, Wayne Brady: The Family Remix, where he co-starred with his daughter, ex-wife, and her current partner.

While that didn’t extend beyond one season of episodes, Wayne hasn’t slowed down when it comes to working.

Months ago, fans could watch him on stage as the titular character in a Broadway revival of The Wiz.

He’s now returning to Broadway, as recent news revealed another new role for Wayne away from television.

Wayne Brady joins the Moulin Rouge cast

On Wayne’s Instagram page, he shared several posts,...

Broadway’s 2024-25 season got off to a rather fine start, from the wildly popular and hysterically funny Oh, Mary! to the fabulous splash of Death Becomes Her and the wonderful left-field sleeper Maybe Happy Ending, and wrapped up with some equally excellent season closers like Just In Time and Dead Outlaw.

This compendium of Deadline’s Broadway reviews takes a look at all of them. Use it as a guide for your theater-going, or a sneak peek at what this year’s Tony Awards might have in store on Sunday, June 8.

‘Just In Time’ Broadway Review: Jonathan Groff Plays Bobby Darin – And Two Stars Ignite
Image
Just In Time, the Bobby Darin jukebox musical starring Jonathan Groff opening tonight at a wonderfully dressed Circle in the Square on Broadway, does some serious and genuine starmaking, twice over in fact. Darin, the once hugely popular but now barely remembered nightclub singer and Top 40 hitmaker is returned to a spot in our cultural memory, and Groff, the Tony-winning star of last season’s Merrily We Roll Along and for years now one of the stage’s more popular young actors, newly emerges to the top ranks of the best, most natural all-around entertainers working today.

Some performances – think Liza Minnelli in the film Cabaret, or Hugh Jackman in Broadway’s The Boy From Oz – send their stars into new stratospheres, something outside the labels “actor” and “singer” and into that exclusive circle of stars who can hold a stage both as a character and as themselves, instantly recognizable and unique.

2025 Drama League Awards nominations: 51 actors up for Distinguished Performance, ‘The Hills of California’ snubbed
Image
Nominations for the 2025 Drama League Awards were announced Tuesday by current Broadway stars Sarah Hyland (The Great Gatsby) and Orville Peck (Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club). Winners will be announced May 19 at a ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.

The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and off-Broadway productions and stand out for their catch-all acting category, the Distinguished Performance Award. An actor can only win it once in their career. After they have won, they can never be nominated again. This year, 51 performers are nominated. There is no crossover between members who vote on the Drama League Awards and the Tonys, but the nominations can nevertheless be revealing as to which performances and productions break through, or not, with this group’s expanded categories.

One of the most shocking results of the nominations is the complete omission of The Hills of California. The Jez Butterworth play is one of...

Everybody's Live with John Mulaney premiere: The good, bad and ugly
Image
I love John Mulaney. I've seen his stand up live several times and practically memorized his comedy specials.

While I am happy he is getting the chance for an ongoing series, this show is painful to watch. I zoned out so many times I thought I had unknowingly taken an edible.

The weekly show is a continuation of his original show, Everybody's in LA. The reboot with a new, fresh title is coming to us because, as Mulaney jokes, everybody hates LA.

The good from Everybody's Live with John Mulaney 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Arrivals | Frazer Harrison/GettyImages

Let's start with the positives. Legendary actor Richard Kind is John's lovable sidekick. He is best known for his brief role in Night Court - just kidding, he's been in about 30,000 movies and TV shows since including Only Murders in the Building, Big Mouth, American Dad, Curb Your Enthusiasm,...

First Look: Jimmy Fallon Goes ‘All In’ For Broadway Debut
Image
Late night TV star and former SNL regular Jimmy Fallon made his Broadway debut last night, even if it won’t be particularly a long-running gig. Fallon will do eight performances of All In: Comedy About Love, Simon Rich’s episodic tales of love that features an ever-evolving cast week after week.

The late-night talk show took his spot last night alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda, Aidy Bryant, Fallon and Nick Kroll; that group performs, sans Miranda, wrap up on February 2. (Miranda hangs around until February 16).

Proving one of the more popular, and unusual, productions of the winter Broadway season, All In began performances at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre on December 11, with a revolving cast that has included John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Renée Elise Goldsberry and Richard Kind.

Other performances taking their turns before the production closes February 16 have been Chloe Fineman and Andrew Rannells, with Nick Kroll, David Cross, Annaleigh Ashford,...

‘69 Love Songs’ Soundtracked the Bengsons’ Early Romance. Now, They’re Bringing the Album to Life on Broadway
Image
When audiences pile into Broadway’s Hudson Theater to watch All In: A Comedy About Love, chances are they’re not looking at the husband-and-wife duo tuning their instruments on either side of the stage. The show of vignettes, created by author Simon Rich, is only onstage for a 10-week limited engagement, and features a rotating cast of the who’s who of comedy and Broadway stardom, including John Mulaney, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Aidy Bryant, Nick Kroll, Andrew Rannells, Jimmy Fallon, Tim Meadows, and others. Lorne Michaels Will Shame ‘SNL’ Cast Members for One Extremely Specific Reason
Image
We’ve all had difficult bosses, but not all of them have inspired multiple movie villains, one of which has the surname “Evil.”

While the public-facing Lorne Michaels is just a friendly old Canadian gentleman with a glass of white wine permanently attached to his right hand, working for the Saturday Night Live producer can be an aggravating experience (just ask poor old Billy Crystal).

In addition to the fact that he allegedly can keep people waiting in his office for longer than the running time of the entire Godfather trilogy, and reportedly likes to play cult-like mind games with his employees, Michaels also has a history of humbling cast members with an oddly specific criticism — and it involves wigs.

John Mulaney and his former SNL writing partner Simon Rich (of Switcheroo infamy) recently spoke with The New Yorker, and revealed yet another way in which Michaels exerts his power.

‘All In: Comedy About Love’ Broadway Review: John Mulaney, Richard Kind, Fred Armisen & Renée Elise Goldsberry Give Voice To Comic Brilliance Of Simon Rich
Image
Last week, the Broadway play All In: Comedy About Love got very dramatic about money – weekly box office, specifically, with grosses topping $1 million, an impressive feat for any play not named Mary. Figure in that All In isn’t really a play at all, but a collection of readings by the short comic fiction writer Simon Rich and I thought the box office tally seemed something akin to a Christmas miracle.

Then I actually saw All In, and count me among the Rich converts. Directed by the ever nimble Alex Timbers and performed by a rotating cast of four actors – I was lucky to get the truly excellent John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Richard Kind – the 90-minute All In is a perfect holiday snickerdoodle, a light and tasty snack no less funny for its brevity and lack of splashy production values.

To clear up any confusion about...

Tony Awards watch: Jonathan Groff to play Bobby Darin on Broadway this season
Image
Fresh off his Tony-winning turn in a revival of Stephen Sondheim’ “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff will return to the rialto next spring in the new Bobby Darin jukebox musical “Just in Time.” Tony-winning director Alex Timbers (“Moulin Rouge”) will oversee the production that is set to transform the Circle in the Square theater into a nightclub complete with a swing band.

Groff will lead a cast of 16 to tell the story of this singer/songwriter who was only 37 when he died of heart disease in 1973. Darin had a string of hits in the 1950s including the chart-topping “Splish Splash,” “Dream Lover,” “Mack the Knife” and “Just in Time.” He turned to acting in the 1960s, often opposite his wife Sandra Dee (they met making “Come September” in 1961). He reaped an Oscar bid in 1963 for his supporting turn as a shell-shocked soldier in “Captain Newman, M.D.” In the 1970s,...
