Paramount and Miramax have released the first trailer for Roofman, a new crime comedy based on an unbelievable true story. Channing Tatum stars as real-life felon Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army Ranger and struggling father who turns to robbing McDonald's restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs, earning him the nickname that the film is titled after. He eventually gets caught, escapes prison, and finds solace in a Toys "R" Us, where he decides to hide from the authorities — with no shortage of things to keep him entertained.
The trailer largely depicts his time in the toy store, suggesting that this is where most of the action will take place, though there will likely be some glimpses of his criminal activities and jail time. Despite his surroundings, it's not all fun and games, as Tatum's character constantly has to plan his next move to remain undetected during his six-month...

Channing Tatum is stepping into a very different kind of role in Roofman, a new crime comedy based on a true story. He plays Jeffrey Manchester, a man who escaped from prison and started robbing McDonald’s restaurants, not by walking in the front door, but by cutting through the roofs.
But that’s not even the wildest part. While on the run, Manchester secretly lived inside a closed Toys “R” Us for months without being caught. He built a hidden space inside the store and used it as a base while planning his next robbery.
The movie, directed by Derek Cianfrance, shows Manchester as more than just a thief. In the trailer, he’s seen being polite to the workers during the robberies. In one scene, he even gives employees coats before locking them in a freezer.

Channing Tatum is about to take on one of his wildest roles yet. In the upcoming movie Roofman, he plays Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army Ranger who escapes prison and ends up secretly living in a Toys “R” Us store.
The twist? He’s also robbing McDonald’s restaurants by cutting through their roofs. The first trailer shows that while he might be a criminal, he’s not your usual bad guy. For instance, when he traps the workers in a freezer, he politely makes sure they have their coats so they don’t freeze.
Directed by Derek Cianfrance, the filmmaker behind Blue Valentine, Roofman is inspired by a real story. Yes, this actually happened. Manchester really did break into fast food joints through the roofs and even managed to hide inside a closed-down Toys “R” Us for months without anyone noticing.

Channing Tatum is going where he has never gone before on-screen: The actor/producer collaborates with legendary indie director Derek Cianfrance for crime drama “Roofman,” based on real-life felon Jeffrey Manchester. The film centers on Tatum’s depiction of Jeff, who was known for living in a Toys ’R’ Us store after escaping from prison. He sustained himself by breaking into more than 60 McDonald’s over the course of his crime career.
The first look at “Roofman” states that the film is “based on a true story *as told by a liar.” The film takes place over the course of six months in 2004, during which Jeff lived under the alias “John Zorn” in a North Carolina community. Kirsten Dunst portrays Leigh Wainscott, the divorced mom who works at Toys ’R’ Us and falls for Tatum’s character. Henry Golding shared an update on the upcoming Max and Warner Bros. Crazy Rich Asians TV series from Adele Lim, Jon M. Chu, and Kevin Kwan.
“Everybody’s excited,” Golding shared on the Today Show this morning.
“I was with Nora, Awkwafina, who is a fellow New Yorker, the other night, and we were discussing it. We had Adele Lim come over and visit me and Gemma [Chan] in London not too long ago to discuss where we’re heading. We have a larger, longer-running format because we’re doing a series. We have so much runway to really share the world you kind of got a glimpse of in Crazy Rich. We’re really excited to show more,” he added.
Although Golding didn’t flat-out confirm he is officially on board, it sounds like many key players are keen to explore their characters and their stories further on the small screen.

After joining the MCU, creating a film production empire, and closing out his iconic tenure as “Magic Mike,” Channing Tatum is making yet another career pivot: leading legendary indie director Derek Cianfrance’s latest feature, “Roofman.”
Tatum stars as the titular vigilante who lived in a Toys ’R’ Us store and broke into more than 60 McDonald’s, emptying cash registers after herding staffs into freezers. The Roofman robber became an urban myth, and now it’s Tatum’s turn to bring his story to the screen. Tatum onstage at CinemaCon teased the footage and called him the “unusually polite” robber and said Cianfrance’s film is “equal parts devastatingly emotional but also hilarious.”
The trailer that was shown at CinemaCon described the film as “based on a true story *as told by a liar.” Tatum’s character explains that after escaping from prison, running as far away as possible doesn’t work.

CinemaCon’s distinguished decade of achievement in film award winner Channing Tatum took the Colosseum stage on Thursday to talk up his new film Roofman.
Tatum, who will accept the honor at the convention’s closing night Big Screen Achievement Awards, appeared during Paramount Pictures’ studio presentation at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Roofman, set for release on Oct. 3, comes from filmmaker Derek Cianfrance, who also wrote the script with Kirt Gunn.
Based on a true story, Roofman casts Tatum as a former Army Ranger and struggling father who turns to robbing McDonald’s restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs, earning him the nickname “Roofman.” After escaping from prison, he starts a new life while hiding in a toy store, and falls in love with a single mother and her two daughters. However, his criminal past and a final robbery threaten to destroy his chance at redemption.

The iconic The CW Network was created in 2006 as a merger between Upn and The WB, carving out a prominent space in the television landscape. Initially leaning on successful series inherited from the parent companies like Gilmore Girls and One Tree Hill, the network slowly established itself as the home of several original hit dramas and fantasy shows. Over time, The CW became known for having unique programming and also for constantly showcasing exciting new talent.
The network has a knack for giving up-and-coming actors big roles in shows that, while often campy or extremely genre-driven, still allow them to demonstrate a wide range of acting chops. Many now-great actors got their first big break there. Gina Rodriguez, for instance, became a breakout star as the lead in the campy Jane the Virgin. Her charismatic performance and the show's telenovela style mutually benefited, catapulting the reputations of both. But supporting...

Following the news that Max is developing a Crazy Rich Asians TV series, Jon M. Chu — who helmed the 2018 blockbuster before his two Wicked films — gave a taste of what’s to come on the small screen.
“We needed more real estate, that was the reality,” Chu told The Hollywood Reporter on the Oscars red carpet on Sunday. “We developed the movie over and over and over again and we’re still working on a version of something that I won’t talk about now, but the TV landscape allowed us to use all the characters.”
It was announced last week that Chu and Adele Lim, the film’s co-writer, were both on board the series, with the latter as showrunner. Lim previously departed the planned sequel film in 2019, revealing to THR at the time that she was being offered a fraction of salary Warner Bros. was offering co-writer Peter Chiarelli,...

We're officially returning to the world of Crazy Rich Asians — just maybe not in the way we originally thought. While there is, allegedly, still a sequel film in the works to the 2018 blockbuster romantic comedy (as far as we know!), Max has confirmed that a series, from co-writer Adele Lim and director Jon M. Chu, is well underway at the streamer.
The news was reported by Variety, confirming rumors that began circulating back in 2024, after the 2022 reports of a sequel following Gemma Chan and Harry Shum Jr.'s characters failed to immediately materialize. This may be due in part to co-writer (alongside Peter Chiarelli) Adele Lim departing Jon M. Chu's intended adaptations of the subsequent Kevin Kwan novels, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems, because of a pay dispute that she described as racist and sexist. But now, with Lim back on board to show-run and executive produce this series alongside Chu as EP,...

In 2018, the filmCrazy Rich Asians became a surprise hit, earning $240 million worldwide. The movie, based on the 2013 Kevin Kwan series of novels, was nominated for both Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards and one of its stars, Michelle Yeoh, won a SAG award.
Its box office and critical success made it seem like a sequel to the film was the next logical step, but that won’t be the case. Instead, Crazy Rich Asians will be rebooted as a TV series for Max, per The Hollywood Reporter. The movie followed the story of Rachel (Constance Wu), a Chinese-American professor, who goes to Singapore only to find that her boyfriend, Nick (Henry Golding) is a member of one of Singapore’s richest families.

After suggesting the “bar is too high” for a Crazy Rich Asians sequel, Jon M. Chu, Adele Lim, and Kevin Kwan are breaking ground on a development room for a Crazy Rich Asians TV series at Max. Lim leads the initiative as the project’s executive producer, writer, and showrunner. Lim co-wrote the screenplay for Crazy Rich Asians alongside Peter Chiarelli. The charming 2018 comedy won several awards in many ceremonies despite being snubbed by the Academy in every category. The film became a roaring success with audiences and helped boost the visibility of Asian-led cinema in the United States.
Max’s Crazy Rich Asians TV series finds Lim executive producing with Wicked director Jon M. Chu, who directed the original film starring Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, Jimmy O. Yang, and more. Crazy Rich Asians will finally return, though not as originally expected. Kevin Kwan’s trio of novels will next be adapted to TV, with Max developing a series based on the books. Jon M. Chu, director of 2018 feature, and Adele Lim, the film’s co-writer, are both on board.
The fate of Crazy Rich Asians has been up in the air for years. After the 2018 film starring Michelle Yeoh, Constance Wu and Henry Golding grossed $240 million at the global box office, a sequel was a no-brainer. Warner Bros. Pictures confirmed development on a sequel drawing from novel China Rich Girlfriend was in development within weeks of the opening. But scheduling and the eventual departure of Lim stalled development — as did Chu’s massive commitment to directing Wicked and its upcoming conclusion, Wicked: For Good.

Max’s Crazy Rich Asians TV series has officially opened a development room led by Adele Lim who will serve as executive producer, writer and showrunner. Lim co-wrote the script for the hit Crazy Rich Asians feature from Warner Bros. released in 2018 with Peter Chiarelli.
Alongside Lim (via her 100 Tigers prod co), executive producers will also include Jon M. Chu (via his Electric Somewhere banner), who directed the film, and Kevin Kwan, who authored the novel of the same name that inspired the film and the upcoming series. Warner Bros. TV is the studio.
We understand there have been unofficial conversations with the original cast about possibly returning; however, there is no creative direction for the season, so it would be too early to speculate on the storyline. Sources close to production confirm to Deadline that the series will not replace the long-awaited sequel to the 2018 film as Chu and...
