Channing Tatum is stepping into a very different kind of role in Roofman, a new crime comedy based on a true story. He plays Jeffrey Manchester, a man who escaped from prison and started robbing McDonald’s restaurants, not by walking in the front door, but by cutting through the roofs.

But that’s not even the wildest part. While on the run, Manchester secretly lived inside a closed Toys “R” Us for months without being caught. He built a hidden space inside the store and used it as a base while planning his next robbery.

After joining the MCU, creating a film production empire, and closing out his iconic tenure as “Magic Mike,” Channing Tatum is making yet another career pivot: leading legendary indie director Derek Cianfrance’s latest feature, “Roofman.”

Tatum stars as the titular vigilante who lived in a Toys ’R’ Us store and broke into more than 60 McDonald’s, emptying cash registers after herding staffs into freezers. The Roofman robber became an urban myth, and now it’s Tatum’s turn to bring his story to the screen. Tatum onstage at CinemaCon teased the footage and called him the “unusually polite” robber and said Cianfrance’s film is “equal parts devastatingly emotional but also hilarious.”

The trailer that was shown at CinemaCon described the film as “based on a true story *as told by a liar.” Tatum’s character explains that after escaping from prison, running as far away as possible doesn’t work.

CinemaCon’s distinguished decade of achievement in film award winner Channing Tatum took the Colosseum stage on Thursday to talk up his new film Roofman.

Tatum, who will accept the honor at the convention’s closing night Big Screen Achievement Awards, appeared during Paramount Pictures’ studio presentation at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Following the news that Max is developing a Crazy Rich Asians TV series, Jon M. Chu — who helmed the 2018 blockbuster before his two Wicked films — gave a taste of what’s to come on the small screen.

“We needed more real estate, that was the reality,” Chu told The Hollywood Reporter on the Oscars red carpet on Sunday. “We developed the movie over and over and over again and we’re still working on a version of something that I won’t talk about now, but the TV landscape allowed us to use all the characters.”

We're officially returning to the world of Crazy Rich Asians — just maybe not in the way we originally thought. While there is, allegedly, still a sequel film in the works to the 2018 blockbuster romantic comedy (as far as we know!), Max has confirmed that a series, from co-writer Adele Lim and director Jon M. Chu, is well underway at the streamer.

The news was reported by Variety, confirming rumors that began circulating back in 2024, after the 2022 reports of a sequel following Gemma Chan and Harry Shum Jr.'s characters failed to immediately materialize. This may be due in part to co-writer (alongside Peter Chiarelli) Adele Lim departing Jon M. Chu's intended adaptations of the subsequent Kevin Kwan novels, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems, because of a pay dispute that she described as racist and sexist. In 2018, the filmCrazy Rich Asians became a surprise hit, earning $240 million worldwide. The movie, based on the 2013 Kevin Kwan series of novels, was nominated for both Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards and one of its stars, Michelle Yeoh, won a SAG award.

Its box office and critical success made it seem like a sequel to the film was the next logical step, but that won’t be the case. Instead, Crazy Rich Asians will be rebooted as a TV series for Max, per The Hollywood Reporter. The movie followed the story of Rachel (Constance Wu), a Chinese-American professor, who goes to Singapore only to find that her boyfriend, Nick (Henry Golding) is a member of one of Singapore’s richest families.

Pictures confirmed development on a sequel drawing from novel China Rich Girlfriend was in development within weeks of the opening. But scheduling and the eventual departure of Lim stalled development — as did Chu’s massive commitment to directing Wicked and its upcoming conclusion, Wicked: For Good.

Max’s Crazy Rich Asians TV series has officially opened a development room led by Adele Lim who will serve as executive producer, writer and showrunner. Lim co-wrote the script for the hit Crazy Rich Asians feature from Warner Bros. released in 2018 with Peter Chiarelli.

Alongside Lim (via her 100 Tigers prod co), executive producers will also include Jon M. Chu (via his Electric Somewhere banner), who directed the film, and Kevin Kwan, who authored the novel of the same name that inspired the film and the upcoming series. Warner Bros. TV is the studio.

Exclusive: Longtime Berlanti Productions executive Jonathan Gabay has been named President of Television for film and TV production company Rideback, which recently re-upped its first-look TV deal at CBS Studios. Reporting to Rideback co-CEOs Jonathan Eirich and Michael LoFaso, Gabay will lead TV development and production, overseeing a team that includes Rideback VP Television Courteney Tarantin.

Gabay succeeds Lindsey Liberatore, who recently left as EVP Television, segueing to producing.

He comes to Rideback from Berlanti Productions.
