“Win or Lose,” Pixar’s first original TV series, takes a “Rashomon”-like approach to a co-ed middle school softball team called the Pickles as it heads to the championship game. Each of the eight episodes revolves around a different character, replaying the penultimate game from multiple perspectives to reveal the disparity between public and private behavior.
IndieWire got a peek at the first four episodes: The first kicks off with Laurie (Rosie Foss), the insecure daughter of Coach Dan (Will Forte), who’s hitless and constantly breaks out into a sweat that eventually transforms into a blobby companion called Sweaty (Jo Firestone). The second focuses on Frank (Josh Thomson), the fearful umpire and school teacher who hides from everyone in video game-like armor during awkward situations. The third spotlights Rochelle (Milan Ray), the bossy catcher who has a day from hell, and the fourth pivots to Rochelle’s social media-obsessed mom,...

Win or Lose, Pixar’s first long-format television series is funny, heartwarming, and one of the best pieces of entertainment the studio has produced in years. Yes, the little streaming series that could is that good.
Win or Lose has an engaging format — almost an anthology series — connecting each chapter just enough to view the previous one in a new light. The series captures what the studio’s filmography does best: emotional storytelling, strong character development, and universal themes that bring people, families, and audiences together.
Now, if only Pixar’s recent film entries could rise to the occasion and reach this level of creativity.

Most Pixar projects come with a clear, unique selling point: What if toys were alive? What if superheroes had families? What if the emotions in our head were personified? For Pixar's latest small-screen effort — their first television show not based on a film property — the studio's intentions are less clear cut.
Win Or Lose is essentially Pixar's Rashomon: looking at the same baseball game from a different angle each episode. As the series progresses, viewers fit the puzzle-pieces together, exploring the backstory behind events that may not be clear at first. To differentiate each perspective further, Win Or Lose uses unique visual metaphors and animation styles to personalise every character, as if we're seeing the world through their eyes.
A sweet if inessential exploration of the problems faced by children and adults.

The trailer for Pixar Animation Studios’ first-ever original series, “Win or Lose,” has been released, with the full series streaming on Disney+ on February 19. The animated show features the intertwined stories of eight characters as they prepare for their big championship softball game. Those characters have undergone at least some adjustments at the behest of Disney, which requested the removal of a storyline about a trans character and adjusted lines of dialogue to remove any mention of gender identity.
“When it comes to animated content for a younger audience, we recognize that many parents would prefer to discuss certain subjects with their children on their own terms and timeline,” a spokesperson said in a statement to IndieWire at the time.

Launching on Disney+ on February 19, Pixar Animation Studios’ first-ever original series Win or Lose features the intertwined stories of eight different characters as they each prepare for their big championship softball game—the insecure kids, their helicopter parents, even a lovesick umpire.
Today, Pixar released a new trailer, key art and images from the anticipated series.
“I played softball growing up,” said Carrie Hobson, who wrote, directed and executive produced the series with Michael Yates. “Inspired by that experience, we felt fast-pitch softball was the perfect backdrop for the show.
“There are so many facets to playing sports that I love—it can bring out the best and worst of a person, the calmest person can lose their temper. And when it comes to winning and losing—the consequences are nothing, and yet, they’re everything. We really felt like it was the best arena for the themes we loved.
