Limited releases for ‘Emu Runner’ and ‘The Furies’
‘Emu Runner.’

Writer-director Imogen Thomas’ family drama Emu Runner and Tony D’Aquino’s female-driven survival thriller The Furies opened in limited sessions on a handful of screens last weekend.

The grosses were commensurately modest but The Furies has been sold to half a dozen major territories including the Us and Odin’s Eye Entertainment is negotiating deals for Latin America, Russia and Italy.

Los Angeles-based Timothy O’Brien of Ovation Films, who has represented Emu Runner since just before its Berlin premiere, is hopeful of international sales.

Thomas’ debut feature, which had its world premiere in the Discovery section of the Toronto International Film Festival, revolves around a nine-year-old Indigenous girl (Rhae-Kye Waites) in the remote Brewarrina community, who finds solace in the company of a wild emu after her mother’s unexpected death.

The cast includes Wayne Blair, Maurial Spearim, Georgia Blizzard, Rob Carlton and newcomers Mary Waites, Letisha Boney,...

Review: The Furies is a Gory Blast from Start to Finish
If you have any intention of watching The Furies, a new slasher out of Australia making its exclusive streaming premiere on Shudder, don’t read the rest of this review. Don’t read any reviews. Don’t watch a trailer. Do what you can to replicate the experience I had, which was sitting down to watch the film knowing the title and nothing more. It’s the best way to appreciate the way the movie unfolds and the surprises it has in store. Trust me.

While I won’t be spoiling any of the major twists of the film, even knowing the premise is more than I want to spoil. However, this is a review, and you’ve already made the choice to read this far despite being warned. The Furies, the feature debut of writer/director Tony D'Aquino, finds a young woman named Kayla (Airlie Dodds) kidnapped and waking...

Airlie Dodds in The Furies (2019)
BiFan Film Review: ‘The Furies’
Airlie Dodds in The Furies (2019)
An above-average riff on the reliable “hunting humans for sport” scenario that’s been around at least as far as 1932’s Rko thriller “The Most Dangerous Game,” “The Furies” marks a solid feature debut for Aussie writer-director Tony D’Aquino. A pacy tale about kidnapped women being butchered by mutant monstrosities while sickos pay to watch online, this well-produced Ozploitation effort has the heavy-duty gore to excite horror hounds and packs enough of a girl-power punch to avoid dismissal as just another misogynist slasher movie. Debuting in Asia at BiFan after screenings in Brussels Fantastic Festival and Edinburgh, these “Furies” are certain to be let loose at many more genre-related events, and also have a shot at theatrical exposure in Australia and beyond. Local release details are pending.

Crucial to the film rising above the ranks of horror also-rans is the outstanding central performance of Airlie Dodds, who impressed as...

Eiff 2019: ‘The Furies’ Review
Stars: Airlie Dodds, Linda Ngo, Taylor Ferguson, Ebony Vagulans, Helana Sawires, Harriet Davies, Kaitlyn Boye, Jessica Baker, Danielle Horvat | Written and Directed by Tony D’Aquino

This supremely gory outback slasher is an efficient, smartly paced horror flick that puts a series of inventive twists on some familiar genre ideas. As such, it represents a significant debut for Australian writer-director Tony D’Aquino and marks him out as a serious horror talent to watch.

After a brief prologue, giving a hint of what’s in store, the film opens with teenage best friends Kayla (Airlie Dodds) and Maddie (Ebony Vagulans), having an argument after spraying “Fuck the Patriarchy” in an underpass. After Maddie storms off, both girls are kidnapped by masked men and Kayla wakes up in a box in the outback with “Beauty 6” written on it.

She quickly discovers that she’s not alone, and that as well as...

Eiff 2019: Review of Australian Splatterpunker The Furies
While I initially mistook this for a film about adults who dress up as furry animals, The Furies is actually a graphic splatter movie from Australia about a group of young women who are kidnapped and taken to a forest as part of a sadistic game where they act as prey to a bunch of psychopathic masked murderers. It's a familiar set up to anyone with an interest in the horror genre, but The Furies is set apart both in the skill with which it is made, and the fact that it takes us places we didn't expect to go. It's also quite funny.

Kayla (Airlie Dodds) wakes up in a box in a forest and meets two other women who have found themselves in the same situation, and together they figure out a plan for survival. It's such a well-worn trope that you'd be forgiven for the assumption...

Five Australian films to premiere at Edinburgh Film Festival
Eddie Izzard in ‘The Flip Side.’

Five Australian films have been invited to the 73rd edition of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, which runs from June 19–30.

Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding, Thomas M Wright’s Acute Misfortune, Marion Pilowsky’s The Flip Side and Miranda Nation’s Undertow will screen in the World Perspectives strand.

Tony D’Aquino’s debut feature The Furies, a female-driven survival thriller, will be showcased in the Night Moves strand.

The festival describes D’Aquino’s film, which stars Airlie Dodds, Danielle Horvat, Linda Ngo and Taylor Ferguson, as a “gripping modern take on the 1980s slasher film, full of gore.”

Acute Misfortune is a “striking, brilliant and unconventional portrait” of one of Australia’s most acclaimed and idiosyncratic painters Adam Cullen; The Flip Side is a breezy rom-com about a budding chef and a British actor; Undertow is a tense and moving female-led...

‘Backtrack Boys’ and ‘Book Week’ launch in cinemas
‘Backtrack Boys.’

Russell Crowe last week urged his 2.73 million Twitter followers to see Backtrack Boys in cinemas, lauding Catherine Scott’s feature documentary as really special and a great story.

A reasonable number of Crowe’s followers did so as Umbrella Entertainment launched the film as an alternate content release, which means exhibitors have the flexibility to run limited sessions.

Meanwhile writer-director Heath Davis’ drama Book Week began its staggered roll-out on eight screens via Bonsai Films.

Backtrack Boys examines a youth program run by rule-breaking jackaroo Bernie Shakeshaft (hailed by Crowe as a “good fella and a bit of a genius”) on the outskirts of Armidale Nsw. Voted as the top feature documentary at the Melbourne International Film Festival, the film collected $24,000 from one session on Saturday and Sunday on 44 screens, and $56,000 including festival screenings.

This opens theatrically in Australia on Thursday.

It’s really special.

Go and see it.

Odin’s Eye revs up distribution in Oz, starting with ‘Wheely’
‘Wheely.’

Odin’s Eye Animation is launching Wheely, a computer-animated action comedy produced by South-East Asia’s Kartun Studios in Australian cinemas next month, kicking off a plan to release three to four titles each year.

The initiative by the sister company of Odin’s Eye Entertainment is counter-cyclical while most indie distributors are trimming their release slates.

“We’ve found there is room in the marketplace for a strategy such as ours,” says Martin Gallery, Odin’s Eye Entertainment head of international sales and distribution.

“We’re focusing on super-commercial, studio quality animated features. The only way audiences would notice they’re indie films would be the lack of a major studio’s logo at the start. No one cares how the film was financed as long as it’s polished, accessible and tells a good, fast-paced story. We do our research and only acquire titles that are as close as possible to a no-brainer.
