Carrie Coon on Filming ‘White Lotus’ and ‘Gilded Age’ Back to Back, Morgan Spector Being a ‘Zaddy’ and Why Self-Tapes Can Be ‘Disrespectful’ to Actors
Image
Carrie Coon has had quite a year.

Not only is she going into the Emmys as a nominee for her work as Bertha Russell in “The Gilded Age” but she spent months in Thailand shooting the third season of Mike White’s HBO anthology series “The White Lotus.”

“I got back from Thailand a few weeks ago, and I went back to ‘The Gilded Age’ 48 hours after I landed,” Coon says on the latest episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “I wasn’t supposed to stay that long, but ‘The White Lotus’ ran over a little bit because of the weather. I didn’t have any time in between, and it was very jarring, to say the least, to go from wearing bathing suits to wearing a corset. It was a little extreme.

“And I was terrible. I was just terrible the first couple days,” she continues. “I said,...

The Shallow Tale Of A Writer Who Decided To Write About A Serial Killer Review: Dark Comedy Sets Its Sights On The Wrong Target
Image
Britt Lower, John Magaro, and Steve Buscemi are standout performers in The Shallow Tale. Suzie, played by Britt Lower, brings the most humor and excitement to the film. The movie's focus on the crumbling marriage between Suzie and Keane overshadows Keane's writing journey.

Some may find the title of The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write About a Serial Killer misleading. It's not entirely inaccurate, but beneath the film's initial premise as described in the title is a different movie, one less about the process of writing and more about a marriage falling apart and how it might be saved over one out of control night.

‘The Big Cigar’ Trailer: André Holland Goes Undercover in Hollywood
Image
Apple TV+ has just unveiled the trailer for “The Big Cigar,” the six-part limited series about Black Panther party founder Huey P. Newton (André Holland). The show tells the remarkable true story of how Newton, a film producer, and a whole crew of people involved in a fake movie production helped the political activist while he tried to evade the FBI in 1974.

The trailer introduces Holland as Newton and his revolutionary accomplishments, along Alessandro Nivola as producer Bert Schneider. The cast includes Tiffany Boone, Pj Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Moses Ingram, Rebecca Dalton, Olli Haaskivi, Jordane Christie, and Glynn Turman (guest stars include Taylor Jackson as Candice Bergen and Inny Clemons as Richard Pryor). With upbeat ’70s music and the peppy fonts to go with it, the vibe is more upbeat than one would expect of a drama thriller — but as the premise underscores, there’s always more story to tell.

Black Panther Party Founder Huey P. Newton Gets the Hollywood Treatment in ‘The Big Cigar’ Trailer

André Holland takes on the role of revolutionary Huey P. Newton in the trailer for Apple TV+’s The Big Cigar.

Far from a straight biopic about the founder of the Black Panther Party, the six-episode limited series based on Joshuah Bearman’s magazine article of the same name delivers the high-impact energy of a heist as it tells the story of how Newton escaped the FBI and fled to Cuba with the help of famed Hollywood producer Bert Schneider (played by Alessandro Nivola) in perhaps the most ambitiously staged and fake movie production of all time.

“You’re the hot-shot producer, man, produce this,” Newton tells Schneider as they begin to cook up an elaborate plan to help the political activist evade a murder charge, as police attempt to pin him for the death of a 17-year-old sex trafficking victim in 1974.

Christopher Nolan kicked off Universal’s CinemaCon presentation today in Las Vegas, taking the stage to talk about his thriller Oppenheimer, which releases in July. Cillian Murphy stars as the titular J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist whose work on the Manhattan Project led to the creation of the atomic bomb.

“I’m here with a story in the story of J Robert Oppenheimer,” Nolan said. “I know of no more dramatic tale with higher stakes, twists and turns and ethical dilemmas. … The finest minds in the country were in a desperate race against the Nazis to harness the power of the atom in World War II. Picture those same minds realizing the possibility that they might set fire to the entire world, yet they went ahead and pushed the button. I wanted to be there and see what that might be like.”

‘Winning Time’ Trailer: John C. Reilly Builds an Underdog Empire in Adam McKay’s HBO Lakers Drama
Image
It’s about to be the Magic hour.

Adam McKay’s new HBO series “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” details the transformation of the Los Angeles Lakers under former owner Jerry Buss, played by John C. Reilly.

Based on the book “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s,” the series follows the personal and professional lives of NBA legends Earvin “Magic” Johnson (Quincy Isaiah) and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Solomon Hughes).

Both billed as newcomers, Isaiah and Hughes immediately wow in the trailer for the origin story set in the 1980s.

Sean Patrick Small stars as Celtics standout Larry Bird, Jason Clarke is Jerry West, Michael Chiklis plays executive Red Auerbach, Spencer Garrett is legendary Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn, Delante Desouza stars as Michael Cooper, Olli Haaskivi portrays Nike co-founder Phil Knightand, and Kirk Bovill is former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.

‘Winning Time’ First Trailer: John C. Reilly Leads Adam McKay’s 1980s Lakers Series for HBO
Image
HBO has released the first teaser trailer for Adam McKay’s forthcoming Lakers scripted series, fresh with an official new title: “Winning Time: The Rise of The Lakers Dynasty.” Previously titled “Showtime” for the powerhouse team’s “showtime era,” during which they won five championships, the new title doesn’t pack quite the same punch but is perhaps less confusing considering it’s an HBO show. McKay is fresh on viewers’ minds right now as his star-studded satire “Don’t Look Up” hits theaters December 10 and Netflix December 24. Whether that momentum will propel him through a fruitful awards season is yet to be seen.

The teaser trailer offers an exciting look at the period sports drama, complete with a nostalgic 1980s palette and fashion sense. It also features newly revealed cast members Gaby Hoffmann, Jason Segel, Adrien Brody, Tamera Tomakili, Julianne Nicholson, Tracy Letts, and Rob Morgan. They join previously announced...
