It’s easy for a TV show to amp up the sensationalism when adapting a true-crime story. For the producers of Hulu’s “Good American Family,” though, the hope was that the horror at the center of Natalia Grace’s tragic adoption case would challenge viewers to go beyond their knee-jerk reactions. “So often these days we look at something and we make snap judgments about it. We don’t ask a lot of questions,” series creator Katie Robbins said. “We wanted to disrupt that idea. (The show) became about figuring out how to play with timelines and perspective so that people are constantly questioning their first impressions.
“When those turns happen, you are forced to say, ‘Why did I think this? Maybe I’m wrong about this,’” she added. “The more we can ask ourselves about our own perceptions, the more empathetic we can be.”

Plot: Nine new strangers connected in ways they could never imagine are invited by mysterious guru Masha Dmitrichenko to join a transformational wellness retreat in the Austrian Alps. Over the course of a week, she takes them to the brink. Will they make it? Will she? Masha is willing to try anything in the interest of healing everyone involved, including herself.
Review: Four years ago, Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel, Nine Perfect Strangers, became a pulpy summer hit for Hulu. Mark Duplass on exploring the ‘dark underbelly of the hero complex’ in Hulu’s ‘Good American Family’
"I was able to look more closely at what hero complexes are and what people's desires to help people are really all about," says Mark Duplass of his role as Michael Barnett in the Hulu limited series Good American Family. "Why did Michael and [wife] Kristine feel like they needed to adopt this girl? Was it really because they wanted to help her or were there other things involved?"
Good American Family tells the story of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born orphan with a rare form of dwarfism, whose adoption takes a dark turn when her new family begins to question her true identity. Duplass and Ellen Pompeo play her adoptive parents, the Barnetts, and newcomer Imogen Faith Reid stars as Natalia.
Duplass admits he was initially hesitant about the series. "I read some headlines," he tells Gold Derby. "I had seen a little bit of the documentary. When this came about,...

Good American Family ended its run with a sizable audience on Disney+ and Hulu.
The finale drove 6.3M globally in its first six days of streaming, making it the biggest finale of the year across the two streamers, per Disney.
In fact, Disney also says its the third most-viewed finale ever for a Hulu Original, though the company didn’t give details on the top two finales for comparison.
Good American Family, which dramatizes the headline-capturing adoption of Natalia Grace, did appear to be generating quite a bit of buzz for Disney, consistently ranking in the top five on the Hulu Top 15 Today list every day since launch. That success carried over into social platforms as well, where the series scored the most TikTok engagements, shares, and new followers of all scripted Hulu Originals in 2025.

The finale of “Good American Family,” the Hulu limited series based on the adoption of Natalia Grace, reached 6.3 million views in its first six days of streaming.
That makes the episode Hulu’s third-most-watched finale of all time, as well as the biggest finale of 2025 thus far across both Hulu and Disney+, according to Disney. These comparisons are based on data gathered across all season finales, not first seasons or final seasons alone, with views being calculated by dividing total time streamed by an episode’s runtime.
“Good American Family” stars Ellen Pompeo, Mark Duplass and Imogen Faith Reid as the Barnett family. [This story contains spoilers from the Good American Family season finale.]
Now that Good American Family has released its final episode, viewers have seen the full intent of the Hulu’s narrative project about Natalia Grace.
The eight-episode limited series, which is inspired by Grace’s viral real-life story, was first told from the perspectives of Kristine and Michael Barnett, the Indiana husband-and-wife who adopted Ukrainian-born Grace in 2010, and who are played by Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass. Halfway through, the series flipped to being told from the point of view of Grace, played by Imogen Faith Reid, and later introduced Grace’s next adoptive parent Cynthia Mans, played by Christina Hendricks.
The differing perspectives, which proved to be contradictory, had been promised by creator Katie Robbins. “We start the story in Kristine and Michael Barnett’s version of events and that slowly starts to shift over time, and we’re led to question if our...

Good American Family, Hulu's gripping limited series about Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born orphan who becomes the center of controversy after being adopted — and later abandoned — by her American family, aired its final episode on April 30.
The ripped-from-the-headlines drama stars Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass as Natalia's adoptive parents, Kristine and Michael Barnett, alongside newcomer Imogen Faith Reid as Natalia, with supporting performances from Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue, and Dulé Hill.
"Hulu came to me with the idea of doing a narrative version of this story back in 2020," creator Katie Robbins (who also served as showrunner alongside Sarah Sutherland) tells Gold Derby. "I'd heard vaguely of the story, and it was a little bit in the public consciousness, but not as deeply rooted as it is now. I went on a deep dive expedition reading as much as I could get my hands on — articles, watching interviews — and I was...

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the finale of Hulu’s Good American Family.
In the finale of Hulu’s Good American Family, Natalia Grace’s hopes that the justice system might finally prevail are squandered when the court of law becomes yet another place where her truth is not welcome.
Michael Barnett (Mark Duplass) is acquitted on all charges of child abuse, mainly because no one — including the multiple experts who examined Natalia shortly before and after she was abandoned by the Barnetts — are even allowed to refer to her as a child at all. She’s merely a “person who was born in 1989,” and therefore the statute of limitations on such abuse exclude much of her time with the Barnetts and, therefore, making any evidence from that time (including some pretty damning Facebook messages) inadmissible.
But, as frustrated as viewers might be, showrunners Katie Robbins and Sarah Sutherland...

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Good American Family” Episode 8.
“Good American Family” ended its eight-episode run with a harsh verdict in Natalia Grace’s trial, but the young girl still found some poetic justice by the end of Hulu’s limited series.
Episode 8, titled “Blood on Her Hands,” followed as Natalia (Imogen Faith Reid) and her new family braced for the trial against Michael Barnett (Mark Duplass) in an effort to get justice for he and Kristine (Ellen Pompeo) abandoning her, as well as correcting her age so she would once again be recognized as a child by the courts. Though damning evidence against the Barnetts seemed to signal a win for Natalia, a legal technicality stopped her lawyers from using any evidence or testimony that referred to her as a child — giving Michael an easy win in court.

[Warning: The following post contains Major spoilers for all eight episodes of Good American Family.] Good American Family, by its very existence, is another part of the media-frenzied saga of Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid in the series). The fact of its meta relevance loomed large for the co-showrunners of the miniseries, Katie Robbins and Sarah Sutherland, from the series’ very inception. However, Robbins, who created the miniseries for Hulu, and Sutherland both embraced the opportunity to employ some of the stylistic elements of their former collaboration, The Affair, to truly showcase the finer details of what happened and put audiences into the shoes of everyone involved, however contradictory those perspectives truly were. The show’s structure — switching from the perspectives of adoptive parents Kristine (Ellen Pompeo) and Michael Barnett (Mark Duplass) to that of Natalia halfway through — has a dizzying effect on its audience, and in the finale, we’re left wanting so much more … at least, in the ...

Early on in Good American Family, viewers of the weekly Hulu series about the adoptive parents of Natalia Grace get a sense that they aren’t being told the full story.
The dramatization of the real-life national news story of Kristine and Michael Barnett adopting Grace, a Ukrainian child orphan with a rare and severe form of dwarfism, has been primarily unfolding in flashback to explore what allegedly happened after the Indiana husband-and-wife adopted Grace in 2010. But each episode opens with a flash-forward that gives even the most unassuming viewer (who hasn’t seen the headlines or watched the ID docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace) hints that there is at least one unreliable narrator telling this story.
The first four episodes have explored the Barnetts’ point of view to explain why they end up being accused of neglect for abandoning Grace. Their adopted daughter was actually an adult...

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the first three episodes of Hulu’s Good American Family.
By the third episode of Hulu’s Good American Family, audiences may very well be wondering how anyone can dispute that Natalia Grace terrorized her adopted family, the Barnetts, in the three years she lived with them.
But, as co-showrunner Sarah Sutherland warns, no one should jump to conclusions just yet.
“This episode is basically setting bread crumbs that will then get paid off in the end,” she tells Deadline.
By the end of Episode 3, Kristine Barnett (Ellen Pompeo) is good and well convinced that Natalia (Imogen Faith Reid) is out to get her. She thinks that Natalia is not actually a child, based on signs of puberty, and when she finds a used tampon under a piece of furniture while conducting a news interview with her son, Kristine flies off the handle.

Plot: Told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma, this compelling drama is inspired by the disturbing stories surrounding a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism. The first two episodes of Hulu's ripped-from-the-headlines limited series Good American Family debuted on the streamer March 19 — and critics are divided.
The "mad and messy saga" is based on the story of Natalia Grace (played by newcomer Imogen Faith Reid), a Ukrainian-born orphan with a rare form of dwarfism who is adopted by a Midwestern family — only to be abandoned a year later when they start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. Golden Globe nominee Ellen Pompeo (Grey's Anatomy) executive produces and stars as Kristine Barnett, Natalia's adoptive mother, and Emmy winner Mark Duplass (The Morning Show) plays Michael Barnett, Kristine's optimistic husband. The project also features Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue, and Dulé Hill.

Fascinating, oftentimes maddening, and occasionally overdramatic, Good American Familyis thoroughly addictive television. Like its limited-series cousins, The Act, Adolescence, and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the Hulu series presents a seemingly harmless child—or family—that are not who they appear to be. Or maybe they are. Either way, the tension builds to such a degree that you want to reach inside the screen and shake some of the characters you’re watching.

Like many scripted series drawn from acts of true crime, Hulu’s “Good American Family” opens each episode with a legal disclaimer. Unlike most disclaimers, however, the language evolves over the course of the eight-episode season. The first half of the limited run, we’re told, “includes certain events as alleged by Kristine and Michael Barnett” (Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass), the Indiana couple accused of child abandonment in 2019. Then, a new perspective interrupts the Barnetts’: Beginning with Episode 5, the dramatized allegations are instead made by their adopted daughter, Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid), a Ukrainian American girl with dwarfism whose protracted conflict with the Barnetts drives the story. The Barnetts’ saga is already well known, with television personalities like Dr. Phil taking a vested interest in their case and Investigation Discovery producing a multiyear, three-season docuseries titled “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace.” With its bifurcated structure, “Good American Family...

“Good American Family” creator Katie Robbins knew she wanted to inject as much empathy and humanity as possible when she signed on to turn the story of Natalia Grace into a limited series. The stakes grew considerably when a television legend signed on to star as Natalia’s abusive mother.
Based on a real-life case that previously inspired a hit docuseries, “Good American Family” follows the story of Kristine and Michael Barnett after they adopt Natalia Grace, a 7-year-old girl with dwarfism. But as the new family dynamic begins to go south, the parents start to wonder if they might be getting swindled by someone who is much older than she appears. Ellen Pompeo leads the cast — in her first TV lead role outside of “Grey’s Anatomy” — as matriarch Kristine Barnett. Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show”) plays her husband Michael, and breakout star Imogen Faith Reid embodies Natalia Grace.

While the ID Channel docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace aired its final episode on Max back in January, Hulu's latest miniseries Good American Familymeans the infamous true story it's based on is far from over. The streaming service will continue to unravel the contentious case through this new dramatized retelling featuring Grey's Anatomy's Ellen Pompeo and Creep's Mark Duplass, as Kristine and Michael Barnett — Natalia's adoptive parents, who start to believe the orphan is actually much older than she claims to be.
Previously dubbed Orphan, the show will reexamine the captivating and real tale of Natalia Grace, a young Ukrainian girl with a rare form of dwarfism called spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita. The genetic disorder affects an individual's bone growth, resulting in short stature and skeletal abnormalities as well as vision and hearing impairments. For Natalia, the uncommon condition brings her age into question for the Barnett family.

“Look, there’s a documentary, there’s a movie called ‘Orphan’ that has similar themes, it’s been in the press. Why do we need another ripped from the headlines story?” Duplass told Variety Thursday night at the show’s Los Angeles premiere (and FYC event) at the Directors Guild Theater.
But after Duplass sat down with showrunners Katie Robbins and Sarah Sutherland to hear their idea of telling multiple different perspectives to explore hidden biases, he found the “Rashomon” type-structure compelling. “That was really exciting for me because it hasn’t really been seen in the miniseries format.”
The eight-episode Hulu series tells the true story of married couple Kristine (Ellen Pompeo) and Michael Barnett (Duplass), as they adopt Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid), a young girl from Ukraine with dwarfism.

Hulu jumpstarted its Emmys campaign for the limited series Good American Family on Thursday — rolling out the red carpet for a special premiere at the Directors Guild of America Theater Complex in Los Angeles. The ripped-from-the-headlines drama tells the story of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born orphan with a rare form of dwarfism who is adopted by a Midwestern family — only to be abandoned a year later when they start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. The eight-episode series debuts March 19 on Hulu.
Following a screening of the first episode, "Almost Like a Prayer," star and executive producer Ellen Pompeo (Kristine Barnett), joined Mark Duplass (Michael Barnett), Imogen Faith Reid (Natalia Grace), Christina Hendricks (Cynthia Mans), Sarayu Blue (Valika), Dulé Hill (Det. Brandon Drysdale), Katie Robbins, Sarah Sutherland (showrunner and executive producer), and Liz Garbus (director) for a Q&a moderated by Emily Longeretta (Variety). (Watch the full panel video below.

Kim Shaw is set for a heavily recurring role in Good American Family, Hulu’s upcoming eight-episode limited drama series inspired by the story of Natalia Grace, starring and executive produced by Ellen Pompeo.
“Told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma, Good American Family is inspired by the disturbing stories surrounding a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism,” according to the synopsis. “But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, mystery emerges around her age and background, and they slowly start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. As they defend their family from the daughter they’ve grown to believe is a threat, she fights her own battle to confront her past and what her future holds, in a showdown that ultimately plays out in the tabloids and the courtroom.

Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass fear they may be getting conned by their 7-year-old adopted daughter with dwarfism in Hulu’s “Good American Family.”
The actress’ first television leading role since “Grey’s Anatomy” finds her in a pickle as her altruistic heart is put to the test. Based on the true story of Natalia Grace, the eight-episode series attempts to tell the story from multiple perspectives, causing viewers to second guess themselves along with the characters.
“She’s choosing to con us. You’re choosing to believe her,” Pompeo as Kristine Bennett tells her husband Michael, played by Duplass.
As the Bennetts raise Natalia alongside their three biological children, a mystery emerges around her age and background as they begin to suspect she may not be who she says she is. The couple then starts to defend their family from the daughter they’ve grown to believe is a threat...

The story behind Natalia Grace may finally be closed on the ID Channel docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace that came to an end last month, but the saga continues thanks to Hulu and their new dramatization of events in Good American Family. The eight-part miniseries stars Grey's Anatomy's Ellen Pompeo and Creep's Mark Duplass as Kristine and Michael Barnett, the parents who adopted Grace from Ukraine in 2010.
A new trailer for the series (seen below) showcases what's to come from the Hulu original, which bares a striking resemblance to 2009's Orphan, which, contrary to popular belief, was not based on Grace's story. "I've always considered myself blessed. I've known I was put on this Earth to build a world where all kids can feel safe," Pompeo says as the trailer begins. Back in 2009, a horror film called Orphan told us the story of a married couple who adopts a 9-year-old Russian girl only to discover that she’s actually a criminal adult passing herself off as a child. The film was loosely based on the true story of Barbora Skrlova, a 30-something woman who pretended to be a 13-year-old and did some very twisted things that were very different than what we saw in Orphan. In 2012, a sad case that made it into news reports reminded people of Orphan. It was the story of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born girl with dwarfism who was adopted by American parents who claimed to suspect she was much older than records said she was. The Grace case has been covered on Dr. Phil and the docu-series The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, and now the Hulu streaming service is moving forward with a Natalia Grace-inspired...

Ellen Pompeo (Grey’s Anatomy) stars as a mom who begins to believe her adopted daughter is not the young girl she’s claiming to be in the trailer for Hulu’s Good American Family. If the setup sounds familiar it’s because the limited series is inspired by the story of Natalia Grace, which has been told multiple times, most recently in ID’s The Curious Case of Natalia Grace.
In addition to Ellen Pompeo, Mark Duplass and Imogen Faith Reid star and Dulé Hill, Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue and Jenny O’Hara are recurring guest stars.

Ellen Pompeo’s familiar voiceover launches a new story with the anticipated trailer arrival for Good American Family.
“I’ve always considered myself blessed. I’ve known I was put on this Earth to build a world where all kids can feel safe,” she says in the first look at her Hulu series that releases on March 19 (below).
As the trailer continues, however, things are not how they seem.
Good American Family is a dramatization of the real-life story of Natalia Grace. Grace, who has a rare form of dwarfism known as spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, has had her story told across three seasons of the ID docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, which concluded in January.
Now comes Good American Family, which focuses on an earlier family who adopted Grace, the Barnett family, who are played by Pompeo (also an executive producer) and Mark Duplass. Natalia Grace is played by Imogen Faith Reid.

If you’re curious about the case of Natalia Grace (Barnett) Mans, well, you’ve probably already watched “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace” on Discovery+ or Max. Still, you might want to check out the upcoming Hulu limited series “Good American Family” starring Ellen Pompeo, Mark Duplass, and Imogen Faith Reid. Or at least watch the trailer below.
Officially, “Good American Family” is “inspired by” (sure) the real-life story of Natalia Grace (Barnett) Mans, a child with dwarfism who was passed around through the foster system and among several different adopted families. The anticipated eight-episode limited series, Good American Family, will release two episodes on March 19 on Hulu, followed by weekly installments for the remainder of its run.
The series was announced back in summer 2022, prompting Pompeo to scale back her onscreen role on ABC’s veteran medical series Grey’s Anatomy so she could star in and exec produce Good American Family, which was at the time described as an untitled orphan project for the streamer.
Pompeo stayed on as Grey’s weekly voiceover narrator but scaled back her appearances as Meredith Grey (she is also an executive producer). When filming wrapped on Good American Family, she upped her onscreen role for season 21, which returns March 6 on ABC.

But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, mystery emerges around her age and background, and they slowly start to suspect she may not be who she says she is.
As they defend their family from the daughter they’ve grown to believe is a threat, she fights her own battle to confront her past and what her future holds, in a showdown that ultimately plays out in the tabloids and the courtroom.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and her Veep co-stars reunited this week to support Kamala Harris ahead of the 2024 presidential election. The veteran actress portrayed Vice President Selina Meyer in the series, a role that garnered her nine Emmy Awards as star and producer. Fans have noted similarities between the character and Vice President Harris, but Louis-Dreyfus has stated that Meyer shares more similarities with Donald Trump than his political opponent, Deadline reports.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is willing to admit her Veep character bears some similarities to a real-life presidential nominee.
Amid the show’s election year resurgence, the Golden Globe winner reasoned that her morally bankrupt politician character Selina Meyer is more like Donald Trump than his opponent Kamala Harris.
“In Veep, I play a very unhappy vice president, and at a certain point in a run of the show, I have the opportunity to run for president,” she explained on MSNBC.
“Now, I do want to say one thing about the character I play on Veep. I do want to say I play a very, shall we say, almost narcissistic, sociopathic, mega-maniacal type of person,” added Louis-Dreyfus. “I am not a Kamala Harris type. I am possibly much more like someone from the other party whose name I shall not even utter.”
