Politeness Becomes Horror in Dave Paige’s Socially Anxious Dark Comedy ‘Deep Tish’
Image
A massage should be a luxurious moment, aimed to relieve stress or for you to at least come out feeling like a piece of aggressively kneaded dough, but while LA-based writer/director Dave Paige didn’t find the easement he so desperately needed following a treatment, he did come away with inspiration. Deep Tish is a profoundly hilarious dive into what happens when you allow someone else’s comfort to come before yours at your inconvenience and the results of comedically flipping toxic masculinity on its head. Paige finds a self-confessed twisted satisfaction to these types of encounters and has mashed up some of these into one guy’s really uncomfortable day. With an amped sound design serving to immerse you in his protagonist’s increasing anxiety and camerawork highlighting the clumsy progression of his day, Deep Tish will make you cringe while entertaining the hell out of you. Now...

“Send to YouTube”: A website where you can watch 5 million unnamed YouTube videos
Image
These days, the idea of filming a video on your phone and posting it to YouTube is banal. Forgettable. But back in 2009, it was a Star Trek-level push into the future. That year, Apple introduced “Send to YouTube,” a feature that would let iPhone and iPod Touch users post videos on YouTube with a single tap.

Send to YouTube didn’t have any of the capabilities we have in today’s YouTube Shorts editor. It didn’t let users pick a thumbnail or write a description. It didn’t even allow them to name the videos.

The result? There are millions upon millions of videos on YouTube with no titles—just automatic filenames like IMG_1701.

We here at Tubefilter have been around these parts a while, and we’ve seen people discover this phenomenon over and over. Every couple of years, someone new realizes this trove of lo-fi, candid videos is out there,...

Dortmund draw with Sevilla; Maccabi Haifa shock Juventus in UEFA Champions League
Image
Berlin, Oct 12 (Ians) Borussia Dortmund have consolidated their second place in UEFA Champions League Group G after Jude Bellingham’s equaliser helped to clinch a 1-1 draw with Sevilla on Tuesday.

The visitors from Spain started brightly on the road and produced the first chance of the encounter with 12 minutes played when Ivan Raktic pulled a square pass over from a promising position.

Sevilla were rewarded for their courageous start six minutes later, after Tanguy Nianzou headed home a pinpoint free kick from Rakitic into the area.

The opener was a wake-up call for Dortmund as Karim Adeyemi pushed forward, but the youngster opted for a cutback instead of unleashing a shot on target with only Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to beat in the 24th minute, reports Xinhua.

Dortmund’s efforts paid off as Edin Terzic’s side eventually restored parity 10 minutes later after Thomas Meunier’s cross into the...

Todd Rohal, Matthew Lessner, Toby Halbrooks, Lucy Walker & Christopher Radcliff Fill Up Sundance Shorts Slate
The odds of having your short film included in this year’s Sundance Film Festival are .008 percent. Out of the 66 short film line-up (selected among 8,161 submissions) we find actress Rose McGowan move behind the camera for her directing debut (Dawn), we have Ain’t Them Bodies Saints producer Toby Halbrooks shovel out Dig (see pic above) and Todd Rohal (The Guatemalan Handshake) returns to the fest in between features with Rat Pack Rat. Filmmaker Magazine New Faces of Independent Film director Dean Fleischer-Camp rolls up his shirt sleeves with Catherine, Matthew Lessner returns to Park City with the helping hand Chapel Perilous while The Strange Ones (’11 accepted short) co-helmer Christopher Radcliff won’t be making a dissappearing act with Jonathan’s Chest. Finally docu feature-film helmer Lucy Walker moves into The Lion’s Mouth Opens. I’ll of course be covering several of these – look out for our coverage.

Sundance 2014: Short films slate features sitcom stars
Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
Short films can go a long way. Especially when they’re showcased at the Sundance Film Festival. The festival’s Shorts program, which was announced today, has a tradition of identifying remarkable filmmakers as well as introducing stories that ultimately make it to the big-screen as features. For example, David O. Russell brought his first film, a short titled Bingo Inferno to Sundance in 1987, while Half Nelson, which earned Ryan Gosling his first Oscar nomination, grew out of Ryan Fleck’s 2004 Sundance short titled, Gowanus, Brooklyn. “If you look back at the directors who got their start by having a short at Sundance,...

Charles Chaplin
Tom Hanks, Bette Midler and Steve Martin among 2013 Drama Desk Nominations
Charles Chaplin
The Drama Desk Awards — commonly known as the theater world’s Golden Globes, though nominees are represented across all NYC productions in a season — are the last precursor to the Tony Awards (check EW.com tomorrow morning for a full list of those). And judging by the list below, it’s going to be quite a competitive year, with some pretty heavy-hitters mixed in with longshots, not to mention some major snubs (Alan Cumming, Cyndi Lauper, Fiona Shaw, Chaplin’s Rob McClure to name a few). The winners will be announced at NYC’s Town Hall on May 19. Below is...
