The Sopranos is highly regarded as the show that changed cable television. It changed the formula of shows by expanding characters and writing unique storylines wrapped around a mafia family. Tony Soprano led the Dimeo crime family but struggled with the existentialism of life while being the boss of a major crime organization.

As great as The Sopranos is, it wasn't perfect. Numerous plot holes, abandoned character arcs, and appearances went unexplained. MGM+’s Hotel Cocaine has a rather disappointing ending. I say so because it doesn’t quite end but only begins a new chapter for Roman Compte, and personally, I’m not really interested. Hotel Cocaine’s had more misses than hits, and that’s all fine, but it’s especially because the drug-bust world simply has so many fantastic narratives that this one just doesn’t come close, despite telling it with a different approach. The show focuses on Roman Compte, Cuban drug dealer Nestor Cabal’s brother, but it’s also titled “Hotel Cocaine,” which comes from Miami’s hottest hotel at the time, “The Mutiny.” The show doesn’t really give us much about the hotel as such and is your typical cocaine show from the point of view of those involved rather than as a police procedural. Friends is a beloved sitcom that has carved a place in the hearts of a whole generation of millennials, and why wouldn’t it? It’s a treasure trove of comedy, wholesomeness, and spot-on punchlines that are guaranteed to put you out of even the worst Monday blues.

Each character was bestowed with their own trademark, of sorts. Monica was the clean freak, Joey’s flirty “How you doin” is still a classic pickup, and Rachel was the spoiled but brave friend. Then there’s Ross, the clumsy nerd, and Chandler Bing, the funnyman.

But you know who else was a good character (and you realize this especially when you’re on your umpteenth rerun of the show)? Janice Hosenstein. Yup, her.

The (Seemingly) Most Irritating Friends Character

A drama queen whose scream would put even a banshee to shame, Janice is the quintessential ex who everyone hates but is forced to tolerate.

“We like crime shows, at least some of us do,” writer and producer Chris Brancato told IndieWire. “We like gangster shows. We like watching people do the things that we would never do ourselves. And yet, they’ve all been done a million times.”

His own oeuvre seems to support that — but only at first glance. The creator of “Narcos,” “Godfather of Harlem,” and now MGM+’s “Hotel Cocaine” would seem to have found a very buzzy (buzzed?) niche for himself as the prestige crime saga guy. But there’s more going on than just blow.

With “Narcos,” Brancato insisted to Netflix that the actors speak in Spanish, just as the real-life characters did. And “Godfather of Harlem” opened itself up to him once he discovered that Malcolm X was friends with crime boss Bumpy Johnson. And with “Hotel Cocaine,” he takes audiences on a bumpy ride from the highs...

At the end of episode 5 of Hotel Cocaine, Valeria learned what her father and uncle actually did for a living. She had been in the van when Roman was meant to shoot Yolanda dead; however, there was a big mess since Valeria stepped out of the van and distracted Yolanda, leaving her completely shocked. Fortunately, Nestor was able to keep her safe from the shooting, but Yolanda got away as well. Episode 6 further explains the Colombian agenda, and we see Nestor interact with Henao directly. Hotel Cocaine episode 6 begins with Valeria’s bout of anger at her father. On the other hand, Roman feels disturbed by the situation and worries for his daughter.

In Hotel Cocaine episode 6, Nestor decides to start the war for real by showing Yolanda’s men how strong the Cubans’ hold in Miami is. On the other hand, Yolanda welcomes Henao to Miami.

MGM+’s Hotel Cocaine has now crossed over the midpoint, and finally, there’s some progress in the show. In this episode, we also see the mention of Escobar and the Cali Cartel as direct rivals of the Colombians who want to take over Miami. We knew war was just around the corner, and in episode 5, we get a glimpse of it, but not exactly in the way we expected. Episode 5 of Hotel Cocaine begins with Roman and his family now living in Nestor’s house. While Marisol isn’t really thrilled about this situation, Valeria is excited to have a room of her own with a TV in it. This whole situation is going to get really messy, really quick, though.

Hotel Cocaine premieres tonight at 9/8c on MGM+.

The series tosses us back to the glitz, glamour, and high-profile crime of Miami in 1978.

It highlights the Latino influence on our culture and our values, but not in the way that you might think.

Hotel Cocaine follows Danny Pino as Roman Compte, the manager of The Mutiny Club, nestled inside The Mutiny Hotel. Roman has worked diligently within the framework of drug traffickers and celebrities, staying steadfastly outside of his brother’s business.

Janice's iconic appearances lead to hilarious moments and running gags throughout Friends. Phoebe's quirky original songs, like "Smelly Cat," provide heartwarming and whimsical moments. Monica and Chandler's surprise night together, Ross saying Rachel's name at the altar, and other plot twists define Friends.
