J.D. Gonzales is a Director and Director of Photography from Denver, CO. Since studying film in New Mexico at College of Santa Fe and Santa Fe University of Art and Design, J.D. has lived and worked in New Mexico, Colorado, and New York City (now home).
Snapshots of Confinement (2024) is J.D.'s first feature-length documentary as Director and Cinematographer, and was met with great response from the AAPI communities after the release in May 2024. He worked with Emily Bailey at Company3 for color, and former 'Rooney' band member, [on Ben Messelbeck, on the score. Editing and post-supervision were completed by his long-time friend, Ian Marks. His production company, livalittle, provided production and post-production services for the film.
Between 2013 and 2018, J.D. worked in the film industry while also teaching film production at Denver School of the Arts.
J.D. is now a full time freelancer as Director and DP, and in 2019, J.D. founded a video production company, livalittle. Livalittle fills a need create bold work with an emphasis on story and equality as seen in the film Snapshots of Confinement (2024).
In 2021, J.D. continued using his skills as an educator and cinematographer with his 'Crafting the Image' workshops. The workshops are free, multi-day intensive seminars to aid early-mid career cinematographers in developing foundations that are practical and story-driven. The workshops have a focus on creative, technical, and managerial skill sets, and give higher level arts education to promote DEI in the film industry. Crafting the Image's latest two-day event was in March 2024 at Arri Rental in Queens, NY, and featured an intro to virtual production course.
