‘Agnes’ VOD Review

Stars: Lora Burke, Robert Notman, Will Conlon | Written by J. Gordon Ross | Directed by Navin Ramaswaran

Sometimes, just sometimes, you sit down to watch a horror film and you wonder whether the people behind the film are as twisted as the film they’ve created. Agnes is a perfect example of that. How J. Gordon Ross knows so much about the psyche of a psychopathic serial killer is beyond me…

Agnes lives in a state of dreamy contemplation, her powerful mind twisted by insanity. Her talent, discipline and willpower are impressive, but her lack of empathy has led her down a path of violence and murder. Mike Mercer is a private investigator researching a cold case. His investigation leads him to Agnes. He has no idea what he’s getting himself into. Once Agnes has him where she wants him, she captures Mike, keeping him locked in her basement. She...

Uncork’d Entertainment releasing supernatural horror In It’S Wake this August
Image
Uncork’d Entertainment has acquired Lee Foster’s supernatural horror In It’S Wake with plans to release on digital and DVD this August.

There’s nowhere to go… In the past, it’s been called The Wild Hunt, a time when holy men who have strayed from the path find themselves pursued by dark forces. With two groups of unsuspecting young travelers caught in between, a former minister encounters such a force as the sinister Duke of Crows unleashes his hound, a vicious drude that leaves nothing but death in its wake.

“With great creature effects, fun direction, and a wonderful mesh of religious horror and thrills – much like one of the big films of 2023, The Pope’s Exorcist – In It’s Wage is likely going to have many anticipating its release in August.”, said Keith Leopard, President Uncork’d Entertainment.

In It’S Wake stars Elvis Stojko, Paige Foskett, Kennith Bemister,...

Changing perspectives by Jennie Kermode
Lora Burke and Jack Foley in Lifechanger Photo: Fantasia Film Festival

Some films are more satisfying the less you know about what happens in them. After writing a very careful review of Lifechanger, which premièred at this year’s Fantasia film festival, I caught up with star Lora Burke for an equally careful chat. It was a year since we’d last spoken, when she’d recently completed work on Poor Agnes with Robert Notman, and she’d spoken briefly about this project then. I put it to her that one of the curious things about it is that she gets the most screentime even though she’s not the main character.

“Yeah,” she says. “We don’t really see Drew all that much, we hear from him. You know what? It was very much an ensemble piece. It was a big cast. I think it equally fell upon everyone’s shoulders.

Hostages to fortune, part two by Jennie Kermode
Lora Burke and Robert Notman in Poor Agnes

The story of a serial killer and the strange bond she forms with the private detective who becomes her captive, Poor Agnes has been garnering rave reviews from festivals around the world, not least thanks to the talents of actors Lora Burke and Robert Notman. In the first part of our conversation about the film, they shared their thoughts on developing their characters and the chemistry that makes the film come to life. In part two, we began by talking about the relationship between the characters and the audience and why it mattered so much to show that they were both intelligent people.

"Agnes completely relies on her intelligence," observes Lora. "I mean, she uses her feminine wiles here and there, but speaking to Navin (Ramaswaran), our director, and James, our writer, I know it was important for them that they wanted...

Hostages to fortune, part one by Jennie Kermode
Lora Burke and Robert Notman in Poor Agnes

One of the standout films of the year - and not just in the horror/psychological thriller genres, Poor Agnes is the story of a serial killer who holds a private eye hostage, intending to murder him. There have been any number of films about men holding women hostage, but somehow the gender reversal here gives the film a different cast, as does the strange way that a bond begins to form between the two characters. Lora Burke, who plays the titular Agnes, and Robert Notman, who plays Mike, her captive, met with me on Skype to discuss what the film meant to them.

Sometimes actors struggle with promoting their work, saying the same things over and over again and getting frustrated. These two, by contrast, are clearly still passionate about the film. I started out by asking them how they first got involved with it.
