Australian newcomer Alex Grech shines in ‘Juliet & Romeo’, a vibrant musical retelling where he not only acts but helps redefine a legendary story.
Before stepping onto a film set, Alex Grech had already travelled the world as a backpacker, worked as a paralegal and bartender, and performed in high school productions of ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Legally Blonde’. But nothing truly prepared him for what it would mean to bring Tomasso to life in ‘Juliet & Romeo’—a role written specifically for this bold new retelling of Shakespeare’s tragedy.
“I’m honoured to have shared the space with such a powerful cast,” Grech shares. “Having the chance to work with fellow Australians Rebel Wilson and Jamie Ward, who play Lady Capulet and Romeo respectively, was an added pleasure. I had a great time working very closely with Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter & The White Lotus), our Lord Montague, and Derek Jacobi,...

During a recent visit to The Kelly Clarkson Show, Juliet & Romeo star Jamie Ward shed light on the new pop musical reimagining of the Shakespeare play, now in theaters. "Its narrative is very similar to what Shakespeare had written...but there's a few twists and turns," Ward teased on the show. That familiar narrative is told through a pop lense with the new songs by Evan Kidd Bogart and Justin Gray. "I think the music that we've incorporated...is insane. When I first got the role, all I would do is listen to the songs and just think I'm in One Direction or something," the actor said. Watch the full interview now, where he also talks about his time in an Australian pop band. In addition to Ward as...

Update May 11, 2025: Thunderbolts, aka New Avengers, dominated the box office during the May 9-11 weekend, earning $33.1 million in its second outing. Ticket sales for Disney's Marvel movie dropped just 55 percent from its $74 million opening, buoyed by its A-minus CinemaScore and glowing reviews. This is a better hold than several previous Marvel films, including Captain America: Brave New World (down 68 percent), 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (down 70 percent), The Marvels (down 78 percent), and 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder (down 67 percent), signaling a positive shift for the franchise.

Juliet & Romeo repositions Verona’s ancient feud within a neon‑tinged musical tapestry. Director Timothy Scott Bogart and composer Evan Kidd Bogart stitch Shakespeare’s narrative to a modern pop sensibility (think synth‑laced power ballads that nod to Swiftian craftsmanship). Clara Rugaard’s Juliet and Jamie Ward’s Romeo carry the film’s emotional core, though their duet numbers rarely outshine the production’s more exuberant ensemble set pieces.
Dante Ferretti’s sumptuous costumes—electric crimsons for Capulets, midnight blues for Montagues—pair with Byron Werner’s lensing to conjure an almost hallucinatory version of 14th‑century Italy. Sword fights erupt into choreographed dance‑offs, each cut suggesting a “sword ballet” that reframes violence as stylized pageantry. Filming in real Italian piazzas lends tangible gravity, even when lyrics soar into playful banter.
That pivot from tragedy to hopeful extravaganza, capped by a “Book Two” tease, invites reflection on why...

Juliet & Romeo is the latest in Hollywood's history of Shakespearean movie adaptations, with an all-star cast and spectacular optics to draw audiences in. The names attached to Juliet & Romeo that attracted the most attention at the beginning of its marketing campaign were Pitch Perfect's Rebel Wilson as Lady Capulet and Harry Potter's Jason Isaacs as Lord Montague. The A-list cast also includes Rupert Everett as Lord Capulet, Derek Jacobi as the Friar, and Dan Folger as the Apothecary.
Meanwhile, Clara Rugaard and Jamie Ward star as Juliet and Romeo, respectively, alongside other up-and-coming talent in the younger roles. Writer and director Timothy Scott Boggart is relatively unknown, while the movie is being distributed by independent film company Briar Entertainment. Notably, Juliet & Romeo ambitiously advertises a scholarly nature, its synopsis claiming that it is "based on the real story that inspired William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Jamie Ward is Romeo, of the house of Montague, and Juliet (Clara Rugaard) is of the house of Capulet. Those two families clash in fair Verona for territory and are bitter rivals. But the two hot teens don’t care as they meet and fall in love, would a rose by any other name smell as sweet? While the conflict escalates between the two houses, The Apothecary (Dan Fogler) has developed a sleep potion that mimics death, and the Friar (Derek Jacobi) has a plan for the lovers to use it. Wherefore art thou, indeed.

Today marks the release of Juliet & Romeo, a new pop musical reimagining of the classic Shakespeare play. But this isn't the story that you remember. With songs from Grammy Award-winning songwriter Evan Kidd Bogart and Justin Gray, the pop sensibility of the music breathes a distinctly modern flavor into the familiar romance. Jamie Ward, who plays Romeo in the film, believes that this new take allowed for the actors to get at the core of the material in a fresh way. "The fact that we were able to adapt it into a pop musical just proves how universal the themes are," Ward told BroadwayWorld. "I think that's the power of a musical. It's able to really hone in on emotions, and I think audiences...

Let’s get something straight: Making William Shakespeare’s plays “cool” is kind of the opposite of cool. The only thing older than trying to make Shakespeare’s plays “hip” is Shakespeare’s actual plays, which were plenty hip to begin with. Hollywood has been trying to hip up those bad boys for a hundred years. You’ll find John Gilbert and Norma Shearer making fun of studio execs trying to fix The Bard way back in “The Hollywood Revue of 1929,” as they squawked wacky lines like “Julie baby, I’m ga-ga about you” and “You’re just about the cookies for me, boyfriend.”
Generally speaking it’s the updated versions of “Romeo & Juliet” that age badly, but these versions can still have value. “West Side Story” remains the best side story. Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet” is the ninetiesest nineties movie that ever tied nines in...

The push to find new angles on established stories has led audiences to some strange places. For the Disney live-action films, it’s ended in disaster, while the new approaches to Little Women, The Tragedy of Macbeth, and The Invisible Man led to critical success. Juliet & Romeo hopes to accomplish the same reinvention, providing its loaded ensemble with a pop ballad musical from the iconic music producer E. Kidd Bogart. Even though the music doesn’t always resonate, the visuals and choreography are remarkable in their own right.

The fifth season of the television series The Chosen, which is currently being screened theatrically in three installments, witnessed a bit of an anticlimax on Easter weekend. Faith-based movies have a dedicated audience that shows up regardless of mainstream response. We’ve all seen or heard about Romeo & Juliet. It’s one of the most eminent love stories ever written. But while the authentic play is a classic, it’s also been done a million times. Shakespeare’s version is full of fancy old English, dramatic monologues, and a bleak ending that makes you want to yell at the screen.
But what if we told you there’s a new version of Romeo & Juliet coming that’s absolutely different? A version that’s modern, stimulating, and full of music that actually slaps? That’s exactly what Verona’s Romeo & Juliet is bringing to the table.
This remake is a pop musical—think Moulin Rouge! meets Hamilton but with the greatest love story of all time at its heart. And it isn’t even based on Shakespeare’s play. Instead, it tells the real-life story from 1301 that inspired...

With Clara Rugaard (Love Gets a Room) and Jamie Ward (His Dark Materials) in the lead as Romeo & Juliet,...

Exclusive: One notable title up for sale we’re hearing about at the European Film Market is Timothy Scott Bogart’s pop Romeo & Juliet musical, Verona starring Clara Rugaard, Jamie Ward, Rebel Wilson, Rupert Everett, Jason Isaacs and Derek Jacobi.
Verona will be the first film in a original pop musical trilogy based around the real-life 1301 story that inspired Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. A wide theatrical releaser this Christmas is being planned.
Bogart tells us, “We’ve set out to tell the greatest love story of all time, set to the musical pulse of our time. But Shakespeare only told part of that remarkable tale whose events changed the course of history!”
Voltage is handling international sales on Verona.
Bogart recently directed the 1970s-1980s set feature Spinning Gold about his record label exec father Neil Bogart’s rise and fall with Casablanca Records. That pic is coming out on March 31 in theaters.

When Philip Pullman published The Amber Spyglass in 2000, it was hailed as a landmark of children’s literature. The 500-page tome was the first novel for children to be longlisted for the Booker prize; a remarkable recognition of what the author had achieved with the His Dark Materials trilogy, which ended with that book. Now it arrives on screens as the third and final part of the BBC’s adaptation of the series, complete with metaphysical musings on life and death, heaven and hell.
As the story resumes, Will (Amir Wilson) is searching for Lyra (Dafne Keen), unaware that her tricksy mother, Marisa Coulter (Ruth Wilson), has her drugged and imprisoned. Mary Malone (Simone Kirby) is on the run through the dimensions, eventually rocking up in the land of the mulefa (strange wheeled beasts that the production designers clearly had great fun rendering). "His Dark Materials" has finally come into its own. It took a few stumbles and big swings, but the fantasy series has reached the heights that it was reaching for throughout its first and second seasons — and it only took a little divine intervention.
"His Dark Materials" was always a show that looked before it leapt — perhaps a fitting trait considering its notoriously brash heroine, Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen). It was eager to leave behind the YA trappings of "The Golden Compass" with its first season, to the detriment of the show's pacing and its own protagonist's character arc, with a vast scope and crowded ensemble threatening to overshadow poor Lyra. It was eager to establish itself as an adult fantasy show in the wake of the end of "Game of Thrones," to the detriment of the story's own inimitable qualities. And it was eager to give more screentime to its biggest star James McAvoy,...

His Dark Materials season 3 receives an extended trailer teasing the conclusion of the fantasy drama. "There are forces out there, Lyra, that you can't begin to understand."
So says everyone's favorite bad mother, Marisa Coulter (Ruth Wilson), at the start of the long-awaited trailer for "His Dark Materials" season 3. The promo makes good on that promise, too, showing the series' heroes Lyra (Dafne Keen) and Will (Amir Wilson) getting caught up in the middle of a war between Lyra's equally bad dad Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) and all the powers at the Authority's disposal. Also, there are angels, some familiar witches, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby (!), who's (sorta?) back from the dead after his tragic demise at the end of season 2.
All this and more awaits us in season 3, which adapts the third and final entry in Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" novel trilogy "The Amber Spyglass," aka the weirdest chapter in Pullman's subversive re-imagining of John Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost.

Fleabag star Sian Clifford and Sherlock actor Jonathan Aris are joining BBC and HBO fantasy series His Dark Materials.
The duo are joining as Agent Salmakia and Commander Roke, respectively, both ‘Gallivespian Spies’. In the Philip Pullman story, Gallivespians are tiny humanoids who evolved in their native universe’s earth.
In the books, Gallivespian Spies are described by Pullman thus: “He was striking to look at: he was no taller than Lord Asriel’s hand span, and as slender as a dragonfly, but the rest of Lord Asriel’s captains treated him with profound respect, for he was armed with a poisonous sting in the spurs on his heels. He and his kind, the Gallivespians, had few of the qualities of good spies except, of course, their exceptional smallness: they were so proud and touchy that they would never have remained inconspicuous if they had been of Lord Asriel’s size.
