An animated superhero movie featuring Marlon Brando? A Bill Murray comedy? Just two of the strange, starry films we may never get to see.
Film history is littered with movies that have wound up on the shelf for some reason, either because of financial difficulties or, in the case of The Day The Clown Died, because its director and star decided it was too embarrassing to be released. We've written about all sorts of shelved or cancelled films before, from Roger Corman's infamous Fantastic Four to the unreleased John Goodman comedy, Spring Break '83.
Every so often, though, we'll hear about curious-sounding projects that generate a bit of news before vanishing again. An animated film featuring the voices of Marlon Brando and Brendan Fraser, perhaps, or a modern comedy about old Greek gods featuring Christopher Walken as Zeus.
Here, then, are five strange, star-laden movies that,...

Sharon Stone, Christopher Walken, John Turturro and Alicia Silverstone are among the cast of producer Marc Turtletaub’s directorial debut.
The deities of Mount Olympus descend to the streets of New York City, where they wreak havoc on mortals and much worse on the audience, in Marc Turtletaub’s myth-inspired comedy, Gods Behaving Badly. Rounding up a cast of stars -- many who had their heyday two decades ago -- this outdated, unfunny satire feels like an extended SNL sketch from the early ‘90’s, and one that probably would have been tossed into the wastepaper basket. Some bankable names and a mildly clever idea should send these immortals straight to VOD, with a small courtesy release in select cities.
Based on the book by Marie Phillips, the concept is simple: The Greek gods are alive and well, and currently living in a Manhattan townhouse, where they engage in endless petty...

I'd actually forgotten all about this project; IMDBPro lists it as being in post-production since last November, but I suspect that there is some visual effects work that needs to be done in post, which may be why it's been in post for 8 months and counting. Recapping... Big Beach Films announced last summer that its film adaptation of Marie Phillips' 2007 novel Gods Behaving Badly would feature a star-studded cast including Tony Award winner Phylicia Rashad, Rosie Perez, and True Blood's Nelsan Ellis. Phillips' bestselling graphic novel centers on a world where fallen gods are forced to live and work like regular people - as phone sex operators, dog walkers,...
