It has sold to Weltkino in Germany, Polyfilm in Austria, Pathé Suisse in Switzerland, Vertigo in Belgium and Luxembourg, Tva in Canada, Nos Lusomundo in Portugal, New Cinema in Israel, and Cirko in Hungary.

Ketchup Entertainment announced today that they have acquired North American rights to the critically-acclaimed and award-winning Memory, written and directed by the internationally acclaimed filmmaker Michel Franco. Mubi has revealed the first look of “Bring Them Down,” starring Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott (“Catch-22”) and BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan (“The Banshees of Inisherin”).

The casting of Abbott and Keoghan replaces the previously announced cast of Tom Burke and Paul Mescal.

Principal photography is in its final stages in Ireland on the production, which is the feature directorial debut of Chris Andrews, following his award-winning short films “Stalker” (2019) and “Fire” (2015).

UK filmmaker and artist Steve McQueen will attend the 2021 International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) with the world premiere of Sunshine State, an art installation playing at the city’s Kunsthal venue.

Details about the installation are still under wraps; the festival says that “the celebrated filmmaker and visual artist will infuse the expansive, central space of Rotterdam’s distinctive Kunsthal with sound and image.”

Oscar-winning filmmaker and Turner Prize-winning artist Steve McQueen is set to unveil his new installation, “Sunshine State,” at the International film festival Rotterdam (IFFR).

The installation will be presented at the Dutch landmark Kunsthal as part of Rotterdam’s Art Directions, a multi-disciplinary section dedicated to daring films, installations, exhibitions and live performance. Commissioned by IFFR, “Sunshine State” marks McQueen’s first major commission since “Year 3,” which bowed at Tate Britain in 2019.

“We are beyond thrilled to announce the world premiere of Steve McQueen’s latest installation during the next edition of IFFR,” said festival director Vanja Kaludjercic.

Exclusive: Arthouse streamer and distributor Mubi is launching a U.S. in-theater offering this month letting members see one film a week that it selects at participating cinemas starting in New York City. It said Mubi Go will roll out nationwide in selected markets with LA next in early 2022.

Mubi Go (available in the U.K. and India) will launch Oct. 29 with Netflix’s Passing, directed by Rebecca Hall, that premiered at Sundance and screened at the New York Film Festival. Subscribers can get a free ticket during the film’s theatrical engagement at the Paris Theater and IFC Center ahead of its Nov. 10 streaming release on Netflix.

Camille Cottin is having quite a year. As more and more folks locked at home tuned into Call My Agent! (Dix pour cent), the Netflix series in which she stars, her profile has risen internationally. The lineup for the Cannes Directors Fortnight was revealed on Tuesday, featuring new films by Clio Barnard, Joanna Hogg and Alice Rohrwacher. Of the 24 films selected for the lineup, exactly half have at least one woman director.

The 12 of 24 films in the Cannes Directors Fortnight, which is the independent arm of the Cannes Film Festival kicking off next month, dwarfs the number of female directors in the Cannes main competition lineup, in which only four of the 24 selected movies were directed by women. However, some of the movies for the Directors Fortnight feature women as co-directors, so 12 of 29 of the total directors are women.

The Directors’ Fortnight parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival has unveiled its lineup for the 2021 edition which runs from July 7-17. Scroll down for the full list.

Fortnight chief Paolo Moretti, who took over the reins in 2019, presented the roster from the Forum des Images in Paris, saying, “After a very painful year for everyone, we are happy to present a selection of discovery.” Out of 24 features, 22 filmmakers are showing their films for first time at Cannes. Half of the films this year are directed or co-directed by women including Clio Barnard’s Ali & Ava; documentary Futura from Alice Rohrwacher, Pietro Marcello and Francesco Munzi; and Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir: Part II with Tilda Swinton and Richard Ayoade.

Global distributor, producer and streamer Mubi has snapped up major European markets for hot Sundance title “Pleasure,” which delves into the world of the porn industry in Los Angeles.

The service has acquired all rights to the provocative film in the U.K., Ireland, Italy and Turkey. Directed by Ninja Thyberg, the film recently received its world premiere as part of Sundance’s World Cinema Dramatic Competition.

Starring newcomer Sofia Kappel, “Pleasure” tells the story of a young woman (Bella Cherry) who moves from a small town in Sweden to Los Angeles in pursuit of stardom, and lands squarely in the porn industry. Variety’s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman praised “Pleasure” in his review, calling it an “intentionally stark” and “disturbingly authentic” look at what the porn industry has become.

AMC Networks’ streaming service Sundance Now has acquired the Us rights to Jungle Entertainment and Filthy Productions’ eight-part drama Bad Mothers from international distributor Red Arrow Studios International.

Starring Tess Haubrich, Mandy McElhinney, Jessica Tovey, and Shalom Brune-Franklin, Bad Mothers explores modern motherhood through the prism of four very different women as they juggle life’s big issues: love, family, careers, infidelity… and murder. Daniel MacPherson, Don Hany and Melissa George also star in the series, due to start streaming on Sundance Now May 7.

Bad Mothers was created by Filthy Productions’ Rachel Lang and Gavin Strawhan, who penned the scripts with Sarah Walker and Tim Lee. Chloe Rickard and Steven Zanoski produced, with Geoff Bennett, Sian Davies and Catriona McKenzie directing.

A hit for Australia’s Nine Network, “Bad Mothers” explores modern motherhood through four different women as they juggle love, family, careers, infidelity — and murder. The drama is produced by Jungle Entertainment in association with Filthy Productions.

It stars “Treadstone’s” Tess Haubrich, “Love Child’s” Mandy McElhinney, “Wonderland’s” Jessica Tovey, and “The Heart Guy’s” Shalom Brune-Franklin.

“Bad Mothers” will make its U.S. premiere on Sundance Now on May 7.

Bac Films has closed several deals on Bernard Stora’s “The Case,” a psychological thriller set in the South of France starring Niels Arestrup. The film had its market premiere at the UniFrance Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in Paris, a five-day showcase of French movies wrapping on Jan. 20.

Arestrup stars in “The Case” as Luc Germon, a famous lawyer whose new client, Gilles Fontaine (Patrick Bruel) is a powerful business man suspected of having acquired his magnificent property on the French Riviera in a dubious condition. The movie was picked up for Spain (Vercine Distribución), China (Huanxi Media), Taiwan (Av-Jet) and Benelux (Athena Films).

Paul Hamy (“Sibyl”) and Michel Bouquet (“Renoir”) complete the cast. “The Case” was produced by Jpg Films and Bac Films which will release the movie during the second semester of this year.

Two projects from Franco-Moroccan producer Saïd Hamich won big at the Marrakech Film Festival’s Atlas Workshop this year, with the upcoming Kamal Lazraq-directed feature “Les Meutes” nabbing a development prize and the recently wrapped “Zanka Contact” winning an $11,000 post-production grant. “Zanka Contact” director Ismaël El Iraki was on-hand to present 10 minutes of footage, which screened before the gathered sales agents and festival programmers for the first time.

Speaking with Variety, Hamich touts El Iraki’s feature debut as an original proposition for contemporary Moroccan cinema. “It’s a wild, energetic film that’s part musical, part Western, and shot in 35mm scope,” says the producer. “It’s a love story between two survivors… who connect because they’ve both survived traumatic events.”

That subject has some resonance for El Iraki, who himself is a survivor of the Nov. 13, 2015 attacks in Paris. Though the film is not directly inspired...

Exclusive: Fox has given a pilot order to Filthy Rich, a soapy drama from The Help writer-director Tate Taylor, Imagine Television and 20th Century Fox TV.

This marks the first greenlight decision since AMC President and Gm Charlie Collier took the reins of the broadcast network as Fox CEO of Entertainment last month. I hear Collier, a big fan of Taylor’s work, committed to a pilot order in the room as he and Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn recently met with Taylor and Imagine TV’s Brian Grazer.

Filthy Rich also marks the fourth early pilot order for 20th TV, which is getting a head start on pilot season 2019. The studio, which is preparing for a move from Fox to Disney, also has pilot orders at CBS for drama Surveillance starring Sophia Bush and at ABC for an NYPD Blue sequel and comedy Happy Accident.

With the recent loss of the Criterion Collection–backed streaming service FilmStruck, cinephiles looking to get their fix of indie, arthouse, and classic films from the comfort of their own homes are going to have to look elsewhere. When FilmStruck shuts down at the end of November, it will leave a giant gap in the curated streaming world, removing hundreds of essential films from easy viewing.

There are, of course, a few alternative options for movie lovers looking to fill the hole left by FilmStruck, and while no other single service offers everything that it did (how could they?), there are a few worth pursuing. From obvious streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime to more curated outlets like Shudder and Filmatique, there are more options than ever before, and more than enough to please even the most discerning of film fans. Mubi has been a preferred streaming platform among arthouse-inclined cinephiles for years. It recently upped its game by entering the sphere of theatrical distribution with Rachel Lang’s “Baden Baden,” which opened in New York and Los Angeles on November 25. The Costa Rica International Film Festival (Crfic) has announced its complete lineup for its fifth edition. This year, 72 films have been chosen to represent the world’s best in independent cinema, with four world premieres and three Latin American premieres taking place, and over 60 features to be presented for the first time in the region.

“At Crfic we are interested in approaching the idea of artistic diversity; covering a broad spectrum of styles and proposals found in contemporary national and international cinema,” said Marcelo Quesada, Artistic Director for the Festival. “Our identity and our program is built around a free, coherent and risky cinema that moves away from the usual places and bring us closer to different voices and world visions from over 30 countries.”

The Les Arcs European Film Festival will champion female filmmakers at its eighth edition unfolding in the heart of the French Alps Dec 10-17.

A sidebar titled The New Women of Cinema will screen features by 10 female directors including Houda Benyamina’s Caméra d’Or-winning Divines, Rebecca Daly’s Mammal and Rachel Lang’s Baden Baden.

Older titles such as Jessica Hausner’s Lourdes, Agnes Kocsis’ Fresh Air and Nanouk Leopold’s Brownian Movement are also included in the line-up

The initiative is an extension of the festival’s Femme de Cinema award introduced in 2013, the recipients of which have included Bosnian director Jamila Zbanic and Poland’s Małgorzata Szumowska.

Alongside the screenings, there will also be a presentation on a specially-commissioned study of emerging female directors, as well as round-tables and a master-class by one of the attending female directors.

Curated subscription VOD service Mubi enters the Us theatrical marketplace with its premiere of Rachel Lang’s Baden Baden.

Curated streaming platform Mubi is to dip its toe into the North American theatrical marketplace with the Us premiere of Baden Baden, the feature debut by Belgian filmmaker Rachel Lang.

The film stars Salomé Richard as Ana, a fiercely independent and innately joyous heroine adrift in life and in search of human connection.

Baden Baden marks the third collaboration between Lang and Richard. Lang’s debut feature completes the trilogy which develops the character Ana through two short films, For You I Will Fight - which won the Silver Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival - and White Turnips Make it Hard to Sleep.

Baden Baden opens on November 25 in New York at the Anthology Film Archives and in Los Angeles at the Arena Cinelounge Hollywood, followed by an exclusive digital release of all three of Lang...

Mubi is getting into the theatrical game. The curated streaming platform is making its way into the North American theatrical marketplace with their release of Rachel Lang’s “Baden Baden,” which the previously online-only outfit will open the film in New York and Los Angeles on November 25. The film will then be available exclusively on Mubi’s digital site.

The film marks the third collaboration between Lang and the superb young actress Salomé Richard and completes the trilogy which develops the character of Ana through two short films (including “For You I Will Fight” and “White Turnips Make it Hard to Sleep”). Lang said of the news, “It’s such an honor for me that my film is the first U.S. theatrical release for Mubi. The wonderful Mubi team worked incredibly well to release it in the U.K., and now they are doing the same for the U.

Strasbourg native Rachel Lang makes her feature debut with Baden Baden, a Franco-Belgian co-production that takes place in the director's Alsatian borderlands hometown. A very smart film from a very smart first-time feature director. Written and directed by 32-year-old Rachel Lang, Baden Baden has an easy swing, deceptively simple visual compositions and dreamlike narrative leaps. The story will hop-skip-jump to the scene after the one you might expect. It has the spirit of the New Wave, something that might interest Eric Rohmer or Agnès Varda.

★★★☆☆ Rachel Lang's Baden Baden is a simple story of an aimless woman returning to her hometown and building a new shower stall for her grandmother. Not much else happens in terms of traditional plot, yet this arthouse oddity is an impossibly fragile and emotionally robust drama about identity, positioned on a razor's edge between comedy and melodrama. Baden Baden performs the rare trick of being simultaneously translucent, open, closed and opaque. It begins with a bold five-minute head-and-shoulders shot in the interior of a car, where Ana (Salomé Richard) is observed driving around in circles.

Ambitious Svod service Mubi has secured world digital rights to two titles and UK theatrical and digital rights on four more.

Mubi has secured all UK and Ireland rights for Berlinale Panorama opener I, Olga, Tomas Weinreb and Petr Kazda’s intense re-telling of the Czech murderess Olga Hepnarova, set in 1970s Prague.

Mubi will premiere the feature in cinemas and on the service in the coming months.

Mubi has secured rights in Us, UK and Ireland for Rachel Lang’s feature length debut, Baden Baden, and also rights in the UK and Ireland for Eugène Green’s latest feature, Son Of Joseph. They will both premiere in cinemas and on the service later this year.
