As the Resident Evil franchise steadily marches towards its 30th anniversary, enough time has passed that a whole generation of fans now consider the series’ divisive film adaptations to be just as integral to the IP’s identity as the games that they’re supposedly based on.
And with Zach Cregger’s upcoming cinematic reboot promising to take the franchise back to its horrific roots, we thought that it might be fun to look back on the adaptations of yesteryear and rank every entry in this long-running series. After all, with seven live action films and an eight-episode TV show, I’d argue that there’s a Resident Evil adaptation for every kind of fan.
As usual, don’t forget to comment below with your own personal rankings if you disagree with our order, but keep in mind that we’ll be excluding the franchise’s various animated entries due...

Last summer, a TV series based on the Resident Evil video game franchise made its debut on the Netflix streaming service – and was quickly cancelled. That show was an entirely separate project from Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, the feature film that was released at the end of 2021… and it looks like Welcome to Raccoon City was the more successful of the two projects, because it might actually be getting a follow-up! That movie came to us from Raccoon Hg Film Productions and was filmed in Greater Sudbury, a city in Ontario, Canada. Sudbury.com reports that a mysterious movie called Umbrella Chronicles, which is backed by Raccoon Hg Film Productions, is receiving $2 million in funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation to film in the Greater Sudbury area. Since this movie is coming from the same production company as Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, is going...

Netflix's Resident Evil TV show and movie reboot Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City really should have swapped formats to tell their stories. Divisive as they may have been among fans of the games, the Milla Jovovich Resident Evil movies were wildly successful. The six films grossed over 1.2 billion collectively, but with The Final Chapter wrapping up Alice's storyline, the next step forward for the live-action Resident Evil movie series wasn't clear.
The property adopted an unusual approach by creating both a movie reboot and an unrelated TV series on Netflix. Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City merged the characters and storylines of the original two games together, and while the Netflix Resident Evil was somewhat canonical to the games, it largely told its own story. Welcome To Raccoon City arrived in late 2021 while Netflix's saga arrived in summer 2022. Both revivals received mixed to bad reviews and underperformed, but had they switched formats,...

Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City was intended to reboot the horror movie franchise, but budget cuts doomed it before it hit screens. The Milla Jovovich Resident Evil movies always received mixed to poor reviews, but they were hugely profitable worldwide. The Final Chapter marked the last outing of the Jovovich era, and it was decided to reboot the property with a movie leaning closer to its video game origins. Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) was hired to write and direct and was himself a fan of the games. Sadly, Welcome To Raccoon City was also met with bad notices and underwhelming box office.
A thread at ResidentEvil.org has gathered together information both on Welcome To Raccoon City's many deleted scenes and unused concepts - and an explanation for what went wrong behind the scenes. The project was originally budgeted at 40 million, with Roberts scripting a much larger movie.

While the original Resident Evil game already received a beloved remake, a second remake could still be worth the effort. Capcom has recently been overhauling classic Resident Evil titles for modern hardware, with RE2 and RE3 remakes arriving back-to-back in 2019 and 2020. A remake of Resident Evil 4 is now slated for next year, with the project attempting to inject additional atmosphere and horror into the more action-oriented shooter. This series of modern Resident Evil remakes has ignored the very first game so far, but the 1996 classic may be worth revisiting.
The first Resident Evil is widely credited with kicking off the survival horror genre, and the title's 2002 remake is regarded as an improvement in every way. The project largely remains loyal to the plot and gameplay of the original version, with players exploring the Spencer Mansion and battling undead monsters with a fixed camera perspective and static backgrounds. The Resident Evil...

Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City did little to separate itself from the previous movies, and should have added the Hunter creatures from the games. Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City is the 2021 reboot of the movie franchise. This followed in the wake of the Milla Jovovich film series, which ran from 2002 to 2017. While the six movies in the Jovovich saga received fairly bad reviews, they was also hugely success.
Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City billed itself as a total reset of the movie franchise, and skewed closer to the horror tone of the games. Sadly, this didn't score Resident Evil 2021 better reviews than the Jovovich era, and in jamming together the storylines of the first two games, it bit off more than it could chew narratively. It's also the lowest grossing of the live-action Resident Evil movie series by some margin, and a direct sequel is looking doubtful.

Before Netflix's reboot series Resident Evil set the internet on fire, director Johannes Roberts crafted an alternate take on the beloved video game. With "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City," Roberts ignored Paul W.S. Anderson's popular film series adaptation and took the story back to its roots -- focusing on Shinji Mikami's groundbreaking survival horror tone in "Resident Evil" and "Resident Evil 2." Roberts has described his film as a love letter to the games, as his film chronicles the last days of the fictional Raccoon City. Once a booming company town, the declining town suffers a devastating outbreak of the T-virus -- thanks to the Umbrella Company -- that turns its residents into cannibalistic zombies.
Roberts' protagonists, the S.T.A.R.S. Team, are directly inspired by playable characters from the video games, including Claire Redfield (Kaya Scodelario), her brother Chris (Robbie Amell), Jill Valentine (Hannah John-Kamen...

The "Resident Evil" franchise has a long, storied history across a variety of mediums. The whole thing started as a relatively simple survival horror video game created by Capcom in 1996, but has since blossomed into a multimedia behemoth, encompassing movies, TV, video games, merchandise, and everything in-between. It's been around long enough that a big screen reboot has come for us, much like the T-virus once came for the residents of Raccoon City. To that end, Sony has released "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City," a fresh cinematic take on the games that brings the action back to...

Over the last few weeks, it feels like I've left my position as a /Film news writer in exchange for becoming a one-person "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" hype train. Have I seen the movie yet? No. Does it look like it has everything I've ever wanted from a "Resident Evil" movie so I'm deliciously excited about it? Yes. Sony has been really cool about releasing a variety of featurettes in preparation for the film's release, but their most recent featurette delivers on a character fans of the "Resident Evil" video games have been begging to see for nearly...

Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City Featurette: Bringing The Creepy Creatures Of The Game To Life
With less than a week to go before the premiere of "Resident Evil: Raccoon City," the special featurettes from Sony are still coming at us fast. We've already met characters like Claire Redfield, Chris Redfield, and heard about how director Johannes Roberts would love to adapt "Resident Evil 4," but yesterday's featurette release is centered on the groundbreaking monsters that made "Resident Evil" famous. Zombies, Lickers, and the tragically grotesque Lisa Trevor are all vibrantly on display and given the movie vs. video game side-by-side treatment.

As we've seen in recent photos, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City reimagines some of the characters from the original video games with a more diverse cast, and Johannes Roberts is explaining the casting process in a new interview. This week, a peek at some major characters was revealed in some first look photos. Their outfits are rather similar to what the characters wear in the video games, though certain S.T.A.R.S. members differ physically from how they appear in the video game universe.
Recently speaking with IGN, Roberts detailed exactly what went into casting these iconic Resident Evil characters. From the director's view, he was looking more so to capture the "spirit and energy" of these characters as opposed to simply finding someone who looked the part without much more to offer. This is something he feels other video game adaptations have failed with and he's...

The first images from “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” have been released and it looks far from a warm welcome for Leon S. Kennedy (Avan Jogia), Claire Redfield (Kaya Scodelario) and company.
The live-action horror film is based on the popular “Resident Evil” video game series. It’s the seventh “Resident Evil” film, though set apart from the first six films that starred Milla Jovovich.
Johannes Roberts (“47 Meters Down”) wrote and directed what is billed as a “return to the origin” of the franchise.
The official description for the film reads: “Returning to the origins of the massively popular ‘Resident Evil’ franchise, fan and filmmaker Johannes Roberts brings the games to life for a whole new generation of fans. In ‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City’ once the booming home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation, Raccoon City is now a dying Midwestern town. First look photos for Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City have been revealed, giving fans their first look at the new incarnations of fan favorite characters from the games. In development at Screen Gems for a November release, Welcome to Raccoon City is written and directed by Johannes Roberts. It serves as a reboot of the movie series with no connection to the prior installments from Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich.
With Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, Johannes is taking the series back to its roots. Several characters from the original video games will be brought in for a movie that's much more faithful to the source material. With three first look photos, which were first published exclusively at IGN, this becomes much more evident. We can see several familiar characters looking very similar to how they've appeared in Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, and you can...

Early this morning, Resident Evil reboot actor Chad Rook has shared what looks to be the first key art for the upcoming movie ahead of its release in theaters this fall. Although the artwork brandishes the Constantin Film and Sony Pictures logos, it has yet to be shared by their specific channels, so it's not entirely clear if this is the movie's official first poster. In any case, the image succeeds in teasing Johannes Roberts' reboot that will have much more in common with the original source material.

In the Resident Evil movie, Rook plays Richard Aiken, a character that was only featured in the original video game (along with its remake). Several other familiar names are shown on the poster that gamers will recognize, as this version will be much more faithful to the video games than Paul W.

News is now coming in pretty steadily about the Resident Evil reboot, which recently began production, and is expected to arrive in theaters sometime in 2021. We’v already seen a few set photos from the Capcom adaptation, and learned that director Johannes Roberts is taking the franchise back to 1998 to capture the mood of the original games. And although we know most of the cast, there are now reports that the movie will include Lisa Trevor as well.
According to GameRant, Marina Mazepa might be playing the role, as the actress has been confirmed to appear in an as-yet-unnamed part, and there’s a social media video of her practicing stunts with bound hands in a way that resembles the character’s depiction in the Resident Evil remake. In addition, Mazepa is known for her contortionist skills on America’s Got Talent, so would be a good choice to fill the physical requirements for the job.
