In the message celebrating the end of production in Atlanta, Morano pays tribute to "this miraculously beautiful shoot, these obscenely talented actors, this f***ing A+++++ crew of top level pros and one hell of a bonkers juicy story." It doesn’t take long for the action in Siobhan McCarthy’s charming directorial debut, She’s the He, to kick off. The film, which premiered at SXSW, opens with two friends scheming to get laid before they graduate from high school. Their libidinous preoccupations, like those of the protagonists of Superbad, Booksmart and more recently Bottoms, are familiar. But unlike their predecessors, Alex (Nico Carney) and Ethan (Misha Osherovich) aren’t just considered losers by the vague standards of a rigidly stratified student body. Everyone also thinks they are gay and dating each other.
To change their reputation, the pair decide to come out as trans. The logic behind this plan doesn’t completely hold up, but the execution leads to an entertaining and endearing coming-of-age drama.
For the most part, She’s the He follows the beats of a typical comedic bildungsroman, but McCarthy also finds distinctive ways into the genre.

On the verge of graduating high school, two cisgender boys pretend to be transgender to get into the girl’s locker room. It sounds like a ferocious right wing fever dream. However, in the silly but lovable “She’s the He,” debuting feature director Siobhan McCarthy — and their heavily trans and nonbinary cast and crew — find the farce through a twist: one of the “boys” discovers she really is transgender. The result is a meaningful comedy-drama about identity, and the confusion of burgeoning youth.
Half the fun of “She’s the He” lies in its Russian-nesting-doll logistics: It’s a film in which trans and non-binary actors play ostensibly cisgender characters pretending to be trans. Not only does this subvert the Hollywood norm of having cisgender men play trans women (and sometimes receiving Oscar attention for it!), it also adds a playful fluidity to the film’s purview of queerness, as though...

In the indie comedy “She’s the He,” which premiered at SXSW on Sunday, high school seniors Alex and Ethan decide during the last week of school to pretend they’re trans so they can sneak into the women’s locker room. If that sounds like a premise lifted right out of Maga-era attacks on trans rights, it’s because it is — that’s the point.
First-time writer-director Siobhan McCarthy dreamed up the idea just over a year ago, in February 2024, after discovering online that the one high school comedy that spoke to them as a teenager — the 2006 Amanda Bynes comedy “She’s the Man” — was just as formative for many other trans kids. That led to a conversation with their friend, Will Geare (who co-edited “She’s the He” with McCarthy), about the kinds of trans stories they both wished they’d been able to see when they were younger.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Pretty Little Liars: Summer School finale.
Pretty Little Liars: Summer School changed a legacy character's personality, tarnishing their original identity within the franchise. Dr. Sullivan's motivations didn't make sense, leading to inconsistent writing that negatively impacted her character arc. Returning legacy characters in a spinoff like Summer School may not always land well, affecting the overall series.
Pretty Little Liars: Summer School re-introduced a franchise legacy character, but in doing so, the spinoff tarnished the individual forever. Summer School is the sequel to Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin and focused on a group of teenagers tormented by a new villain named Bloody Rose. While it was a solid next chapter after Original Sin's ending, bringing back a beloved character from the original series only to change their entire personality was a creative choice that didn't benefit the show in the long run.

The eight-episode second season featured numerous kills and niche scary movie references, with stars Chandler Kinney, Bailee Madison, Malia Pyles, Maia Reficco and Zaria — as well as honorary sixth Fge member Mallory Bechtel — each getting their own Final Girl moment. But in the Max show’s season finale, all eyes were on resident movie buff Tabby (Kinney) as she ultimately proved her horror film knowledge could help her survive.

In 2022, Max resurrected the long running teen favorite “Pretty Little Liars” from the brains behind “Riverdale” and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring as “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin.” Based on the books by Sara Shepard, the original followed four teenage girls in Rosewood, Pennsylvania who begin getting threatening messages years after their friend Alison disappears signed only with the initial “A.” Running for seven seasons beginning in 2010, “Pretty Little Liars” became a pop culture hit.
“Original Sin” is the the fourth series in the franchise and still set in that world, but this time around follows five friends in Millwood, Pennsylvania who are being stalked by “A” because of their mother’s involvement in the death of a classmate, Angela Waters, in 1999. While this serves as the main storyline, the friends also deal with serious issues like rape and suicide, as well as typical high school drama.

[Note: This article contains major spoilers for the Pretty Little Liars: Summer School finale, "Chapter Eight: Final Exam.”]
Pencils down, everyone! After eight bloody episodes, Max’s Pretty Little Liars: Summer School wrapped up its sophomore season on Thursday with a killer finale. The teen drama slasher picks up directly after the events of Original Sin and follows Imogen (Bailee Madison), Tabby (Chandler Kinney), Faran (Zaria), Mouse (Malia Pyles), and Noa (Maia Reficco) as they’re tormented by a mysterious new villain, Bloody Rose.
The season finale, “Chapter Eight: Final Exam,” finally reveals Bloody Rose’s identity: Chip’s (Carson Rowland) mother, Mrs. Langsberry (Carey Van Driest). After Chip was murdered by “A” in the Season 1 finale, she became obsessed with getting revenge on Tabby and Imogen for “lying” about her son raping them. However, there’s a twist — Wes (Derek Klena), Tabby’s boss at the movie theater, has been her accomplice this whole time.

Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episodes 1 through 8.
"Pretty Little Liars: Summer School" offers a bright summer slasher vibe with familiar characters and a new villain. Returning characters face new challenges as they navigate summer school and encounter the mysterious "Bloody Rose." The Max show's soundtrack includes popular songs like "School's Out" by Alice Cooper and "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama.
Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is a stark contrast to Original Sin, with brighter tones, sunny vibes, and, of course, several pop hits that are perfect for summer break. The slasher and horror elements are still present (proven by the haunting instrumental additions to the show's score) as the five teenagers recover from their experience with "A," aka Archie Waters, and try to move on. However, a new villain named "Bloody Rose" throws a wrench into the characters' plans in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

In Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, Imogen (Bailee Madison), Tabby (Chandler Kinney), Mouse (Malia Pyles), Faran (Zaria), and Noa (Maia Reficco) are forced to answer for the sins of their mothers, but the series also introduces us to an assortment of terrible men. From the terrifying Sheriff Beasley (Eric Johnson) to "nice guy" Chip (Carson Rowland), the girls are rightfully on high alert going into Season 2. Pretty Little Liars: Summer School has introduced two new wholesome love interests for Imogen and Tabby in Johnny (Antonio Cipriano) and Christian (Noah Alexander Gerry) respectively, but one male character who's been a consistently great guy is Noa's boyfriend Shawn (Alex Aiono).

Mrs. Langsberry is my pick to be Bloody Rose, given she has a motive for wanting the girls dead. Mrs. Beasley is likely a red herring as she would be too obvious and was accounted for during Bloody Rose's attack on Kelly. Wes, Christian, and Jen may be Bloody Rose's accomplices, assisting Mrs. Langsberry.
Only one episode remains in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, and the finale will surely (and finally) uncover Bloody Rose's identity, either confirming or disproving my theory regarding who has been terrorizing the Liars and Millwood all season long. The Max slasher teen drama television series, created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, follows a group of five teenage girls who were brought together in the first season (Original Sin) to pay for their respective mothers' sins. Now, another villain is seemingly holding a grudge against Imogen, Tabby, Faran, Mouse, and Noa in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

Imogen believes Bloody Rose is her mom, but the lack of a face reveal suggests the teenager might have been hallucinating. The discovery that Davie Adams is the Pretty Little Liars: Summer School villain is likely a fakeout, with Bloody Rose's actual identity being revealed in the next two episodes. Pretty Little Liars: Summer School offers bone-chilling horror and suspense. The Max series has terrifying villains inspired by classic horror films. Pretty Little Liars: Summer School couldn't be more different than the original Pretty Little Liars.
Higher quality horror shows are hard to come by, but Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is undoubtedly one of the better ones as it continuously builds upon its scare factor, suspense, and intriguing (and terrifying) villains. The Max slasher teen drama is a spinoff of the popular Freeform series and is set in the same universe (but one doesn't have to watch the original Pretty Little Liars to tune in to the spinoff). Whereas it contains the very basic foundations of its predecessor, like a mysterious antagonist named "A" stalking a group of teenage girls, it couldn't be more different.

The Liars will be back shortly with the return of the Pretty Little Liars reboot, originally known as Original Sin and now called Pretty Little Liars: Summer School. The announcement that the show was renewed was exciting for fans of the suspenseful franchise, who had already seen two spin-offs of the Og series getting canceled. The Max original has Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Maia Reficco, and Malia Pyles reprising their roles as Imogen, Noa, Tabby, and Mouse for this new batch of episodes. According to Collider's own Samantha Graves in her review, Season 2 "is a polished, well-thought-out sequel to Original Sin that proves its titular Liars are not to be messed with." Read on to find out when the series' next chapter will arrive on streaming.

When I previously wrote my review of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, I mentioned that I was optimistic for the series to be renewed for another season, but questioned how the showrunners would be able to introduce a fresh batch of conflicts for our Millwood liars to tackle. After all, “A” had been apprehended! The main characters seemed to have found closure, and the future seemed bright and unobstructed for each of them.
And then came the summer. Summer School, that is.
As expected in any iteration of Pretty Little Liars, a new A has emerged to torment our five final girls who are stuck in Millwood attending summer school; this time in the form of Bloody Rose–a crimson soaked, knife brandishing antagonist that I would argue is much scarier than our season 1 stalker, Archie Waters.
