A24 has received an influx of cash from Josh Kushner’s Thrive Capital that now values the indie studio at $3.5 billion (enterprise value), a source with knowledge of the investment told IndieWire. The studio’s new valuation is 40 percent higher than it was for the last round of funding: 2022’s $225 million investment at a $2.5 billion valuation.

That doesn’t mean Kushner threw $1 billion into the pot — far from it. Existing investors from the previous round have also upped their financial support for this new round, A24 said on Wednesday. Additionally, the A24 brand has just organically grown its valuation with its successes in recent years, including “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (2022), “Talk to Me” (2022), and this year’s “Civil War.”

But still, it must have been substantial. The Financial Times reported Kushner’s investment was $100 million, which we understand to be in the ballpark.

In connection with the investment, Kushner will join the board of directors for A24, best known for such films as “Civil War,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Moonlight” and “Uncut Gems,” and TV series “Euphoria,” “Beef,” “Ramy” and “The Sympathizer.”

Financial details and exact figures were not disclosed by A24 and Thrive Capital, but sources confirm to Variety the investment from Thrive Capital gives it a valuation of about $3.5 billion — a 40% increase since A24’s most recent round of funding in 2022, which was $225 million at a $2.5 billion valuation.

There was no dollar figure given in the announcement of the fund raise, the company’s second. In 2022, it secured a $225 million equity investment led by Stripes that valued A24 at $2.5 billion. Life was first published in 1883. In 1936, it was acquired by Time founder Henry Luce, who gave it a new editorial focus built around using photographs to tell stories of the news of the week.

Karlie Kloss’ family just got bigger.

On Thursday, the supermodel’s husband, billionaire heir Joshua Kushner, shared on Instagram that he and Kloss had welcomed their second child.

Kushner shared a photo of the new baby, writing, “welcome to 7.11.23.”

The couple received congratulations from followers in the comments, including from Kloss’ sister Kristine, who wrote, “,” while her other sister, Kimberly, wrote, “.”

Others who sent their congratulations included Mark Zuckerberg, Kate Hudson, Kim Kardashian, Guy Oseary, Gwyneth Paltrow and more.

Kloss and Kushner started dating in 2012. In 2018, the couple announced their engagement, tying the knot later that year.

In March 2021, they welcomed their first child. Kloss announced her second pregnancy during the 2023 Met Gala in May.

Karlie Kloss and Joshua Kushner have welcomed their second child, with the couple taking to social media to announce the news.

Kushner posted a photo of the newborn’s face to Instagram on Thursday, with the caption revealing that the baby was born Tuesday. He did not share the child’s name.

Plenty of notable figures shared support in the comment section, including Kate Hudson, who wrote “Welcome!!!” and added numerous raised-hands emojis. Kim Kardashian posted “Congrats!!!!” while Gwyneth Paltrow shared a heart emoji.

Kloss, whose credits include previously serving as host for Project Runway and appearing in Zoolander 2, tied the knot with Kushner in October 2018 at a wedding ceremony in upstate New York. They welcomed their son Levi in March 2021.

Exclusive: Compelling Pictures is coming on to produce and finance the high-concept psychological horror thriller The Blur, written and being directed by emerging director Joe Miale. Denis O’Sullivan and Jeff Kalligheri are producing for Compelling, alongside Scott Carr and Josh Crook. Carr brought the project to Compelling back in 2020 as a pitch and Miale wrote the script.

The film follows a visually-impaired family tormented by a ghost only seen by those who have severe myopia. It introduces a villain named Smudge to the horror pantheon, and will use innovative visual techniques–largely in-camera–to bring the terrifying character to life. Producers cited a 2021 study by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness estimated that 43 million people worldwide are considered legally blind, while 295 million people worldwide live with moderate-to-severe visual impairment. And also noted the World Health Organization has estimated that approximately 2.2 billion people worldwide have some level of near or distance vision impairment.

Exclusive: While still in post with Compelling Pictures on the Warhol-Basquiat film The Collaboration, based on the play he directed in both its debut London run and its Broadway transfer, Kwame Kwei-Armah has closed a deal to direct Mission Hill, a Boston-set crime thriller that will mark a reteam with the producer-financier.

Based on an original screenplay by Michael McGrale (The Following), developed by Compelling, Mission Hill is based on a real-life homicide case that brought Boston to its knees in 1989. It follows an up-and-coming police officer and a seasoned detective racing against time to bring a suspect in before the city implodes over racial tensions.

Compelling Pictures will finance and produce the film which is aiming for a late 2023 start date, pending the ongoing WGA strike and potential other labor actions from SAG-AFTRA and the DGA.

Producing alongside Compelling is Peter Craig — who’s coming off his first Oscar nomination for his contributions to the screenplay of Top Gun: Maverick — as well as Jay Giannone. Exec producers are Kwei-Armah and McGrale, Steven Garcia for Compelling, Max Goldfarb for Redefine Entertainment, Marina Cappi for Marina Studios Productions, Ori Allon and Sal Monaco for White Lodge Productions, Tanner Beard, Lexie Beard, Janice Beard, Dennis Casali and Joshua Kushner. Two-time Emmy nominee Kim Coleman (Lovecraft Country) is handling the film’s casting.

“I’m overjoyed to be working with Compelling Pictures again on this amazing project,” said Kwei-Armah. “I couldn’t put it down when I began to read it. Overjoyed.”

“Mission Hill is a passion project for Jeff, Peter, and myself. Having just had the great pleasure of working with Kwame, we couldn’t be more excited to help bring his vision to life,” stated Compelling Pictures principal Denis O’Sullivan. “It all began with Mike’s riveting script, which has been waiting patiently since 2021 for a great director to take the reins. We’re honored to tell this story of a city that has been seen in movies we love, but rarely from this perspective, and we can’t wait for a global audience to experience this epic, propulsive ride.”

Added producer Craig, “Mike Mcgrale’s script is among the best I’ve ever read – and I’m so happy to see it now in the hands of a talented director like Kwame.”

Kwei-Armah teamed with actors Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope on both the stage and screen versions of the Anthony McCarten-penned The Collaboration, which revolves around the relationship between the iconic artists Warhol and Basquiat, starting in the summer of 1984. Otherwise known for stage productions like The Visitor and One Love: The Bob Marley Musical, he also notably co-wrote and exec produced the veteran thriller Breaking starring John Boyega, which world premiered at Sundance and was released in theaters by Bleecker Street.

Headed by O’Sullivan (Bohemian Rhapsody) and and Jeff Kalligheri (I Wanna Dance with Somebody), Compelling Pictures most recently released the McCarten-scripted Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody, starring BAFTA winner Naomi Ackie, which Sony Pictures took worldwide this past Christmas. Helmed by Kasi Lemmons, the film currently streaming on Netflix landed the #1 spot on the U.S. film chart in its first two weeks on the platform.

Kwei-Armah is repped by CAA, United Agents in the UK, Redefine and attorney Linda Lichter; McGrale by APA, Heroes and Villains, and attorney Will Jacobson; Craig by CAA and Grandview; and Compelling by Evan Krauss of Eisner Llp.

Billie Eilish is giving fans a star-studded glimpse into the annual Met Gala.

The star-studded event took place on Monday night with the theme of Karl Lagerfield, basing its costuming around the German fashion designer’s style and legacy.

The theme changes every year, being decided by the committee, with last year’s theme being In America: An Anthology of Fashion.

The 23-time Grand Slam tennis star attended the annual fundraiser with husband Alexis Ohanian, with whom she shares 5-year-old daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. Styled by Kesha McLeod, Williams wore a pearl- and tulle-embellished Gucci gown with Tiffany and Co. jewelry and a bejeweled headpiece by Lelet New York.

Karlie Kloss will soon be a mother of two. The supermodel revealed she's pregnant with baby number two in the most fashionable way: at the 2023 Met Gala. (Kloss's reps did not immediately respond to Popsugar's request for comment.)

Kloss was first spotted on May 1 exiting The Mark Hotel alongside her husband, Joshua Kushner, in a black, formfitting, floor-length gown, an outfit that put her baby bump on full display. She rubbed her belly as photographers waiting outside went wild. After posing together for a moment, Kushner stepped to the side and jokingly bent down to allow the photographers to take snaps of Kloss solo in all her glory.

When Kloss finally made it to the official Met Gala red carpet, she opened up about her pregnancy to Emma Chamberlain in an interview with Vogue, joking, "I have a little surprise. . . I got a plus one.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has joined with four other prominent investors to take a small stake in venture firm Thrive Capital.

Before returning to Disney last November, Iger briefly became a partner at Thrive before stepping down upon the move back into the corner office. The firm was founded in 2009 by Josh Kushner, the younger brother of former White House advisor Jared Kushner. Iger’s investment in Thrive is a personal one and not connected to Disney’s finances. Thrive has put money into companies like Spotify, Instagram and payments provider Stripe.

Iger is teaming on the investment with Mukesh Ambani, head of India’s Reliance Industries; Kkr co-founder Henry Kravis; French telecom executive Xavier Neil; and Brazilian investment banker Jorge Paulo Lemann. The quintet is reported to be paying 175 million for 3 of Thrive. The stake had previously been owned by Goldman Sachs before Thrive repurchased it last month.

Former Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger is getting into venture capital.

Iger has joined Thrive Capital as a venture partner. The role isn’t a full-time gig for Iger, who will advise the firm on potential investments, and serve as a mentor to CEOs of companies that Thrive invests in.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the hire.

Iger stepped down as CEO of Disney in 2020 and as chairman at the end of last year. Since then, he has been active in the investment space, acquiring stakes in the pop culture toy brand Funko, the quick delivery service GoPuff and the metaverse avatar company Genies.

He’s also working on a new book on leadership, a follow-up to his 2019 memoir.

Speaking at the Code Conference last week, Iger said that he has been approached nearly non-stop by companies interested in having him on their boards.
