Seb Gainsborough makes electronic and orchestral music under both his own name, and as 'Vessel'. Emerging out of Bristol, UK in the early 2010's he was quickly picked up by Robin Carolan's seminal Tri Angle imprint for his debut LP Order of Noise.
The fortuitous clashing of two events, soundtracking Park Chan Wook's (oft referenced) trailer for The Handmaiden whilst also deep in the midst of his first commission for orchestral instruments, working with Liverpool's Immix Ensemble in 2016. A first foray into the world of the big screen alongside an introduction to the inherently human breadth and depth of live instrumental sound would foretell how the years to follow would unravel.
His work shifted to eschew the immediacy of the percussive impact and the familiar workflow of the computer screen in favour of self-made acoustic and electronic instruments. This exploration culminated in him truly finding his voice on 2018's critically acclaimed Queen of Golden Dogs, hitting end of year lists for the likes of The Guardian, Pitchfork and the Wire.
In the years' since, that childlike joy of treading new ground has continued unabated with Seb put his hand to orchestral works, chamber opera and collaboration across a vast array of disciplines. His work has soundtracked arthouse cinema screened high above the Shibuya Crossing, accompanied works in some of Europe's most prestigious galleries and been performed at the likes of Queen Elizabeth Hall. Meanwhile his previous works continue to conjure & inspire, being used to soundtrack contemporary dance and catwalks for the likes of Alexander McQueen.
In 2022 Gainsborough scored his first feature film, in collaboration with Robin Carolan, The Northman by Robert Eggers.
