In the second episode of “Black Doves,” a new spy series (this one on Netflix), the woman we’ve come to know as Helen Shaw (Keira Knightley) is seen in flashback interviewing for the job she’s now working. Well, kind of.

“Daisy” (her name at the time) answered an advertisement for a position as a translator, but as becomes clearer as her questions continues — sharing details about Helen’s personal history that no typical hiring manager should know — she’s not being asked to convert German to English. She’s being asked to decode identities, intuitions, and ideas. She’s being tested to see if she has the emotional capacity to hide in plain site, to react calmly to obvious provocations, and to get more out of the person sitting across from her than he gets from her. She’s being asked to become a spy.

But, quite notably,...

“Black Doves,” Netflix’s latest thriller series, has it all. The dialogue is both clever and funny. There’s lots of political intrigue and Keira Knightley hasn’t been this action star since “Domino.” The award-winning actor Ben Whishaw is awesome as usual and there is one (literally) bloody shocking twist after another.

The setting is London during the Christmas holidays where Helen (Knightley) is married to UK Secretary of Defense Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan), the mother of adorable fraternal twins and unbeknownst to Wallace, a spy feeding much of what goes on at 10 Downing Street to secret intel group, Black Doves. Helen’s information has been “lucrative” according to her handler. As is the case with these types of plots, when something goes very wrong and threatens to expose Helen, her long-time ‘Dove’ conspirator Sam (Whishaw) is sent in to help.

There’s no shortage of spy thrillers on TV and no end of tired tropes to dodge if you want to make something original. Written by Joe Barton, Black Doves doesn’t try to avoid the genre clichés, but instead finds its very individual personality by mashing and twisting them into something surprising, thrilling and much more fun than 90 per cent of current offerings.

Keira Knightley plays Helen, the wife of a senior government minister (Andrew Buchan). Helen lives a plush life of expensive coats and champagne dos in her high-ceilinged London home. She is also a spy, working for an espionage agency that sells secrets to the highest bidder.

Knightley squeezes everything out of her best role in years, ably gliding through comedy, action and domestic drama.
