‘Black Doves’ Creator on What That Final Glance From Keira Knightley Meant and Season 2 Plans
Image
[This story contains spoilers from the season one finale of Black Doves.]

Upon its early December release, Joe Barton‘s spy thriller Black Doves soared into Netflix’s top 10 most-watched shows in 89 countries.

Starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw, the series has already been renewed for a season two. It was a bloody and brutal season finale — we’d expect nothing less — where everyone (metaphorically and literally) lost their head a little.

In Black Doves, Knightley stars as Helen Webb, wife to the U.K.’s defense secretary Wallace and ascending government minister (Andrew Buchan). For years, she’d been passing her husband’s secrets on to a shadowy organization Helen works for (helmed by Sarah Lancashire’s Mrs Reed), which leaves her hard-pressed to explain where she’s been and what she’s been up to when returning home to her family after a hard day’s work.

All of a sudden, the death of Helen’s secret lover...

‘Black Doves’ Is Brilliant, but It Wastes Sarah Lancashire's Talent
Image
The latest spy thriller from Netflix, Black Doves, recently nabbed a Golden Globe nomination thanks to Keira Knightly and her performance alongside Ben Whishaw and Sarah Lancashire. The series follows Helen (Knightly), who is the wife of a top UK government official and also a spy for an elusive organization known as the Black Doves. Having gathered secrets for the past ten years, so her employer could sell them to the highest bidder, Helen easily became a vital component of their operations. When her lover, Jason (Andrew Koji), is killed, Helen’s boss, Reed (Lancashire), brings in a former associate and old friend, Sam (Whishaw), to keep her safe, get to the bottom of what happened, and find out whether Helen might be the next target.

A brilliant series full of twists, turns, and vibrantly rich characters, Black Doves is nearly a perfect viewing experience. However, as Helen becomes embroiled in a larger conspiracy,...

Black Doves star Keira Knightley has it in for one of her co-stars. The Netflix streaming series may have recently ended its first season, but that doesn't mean the actress doesn't have certain ideas about where she wants things to head in season two.

In fact, in a recent interview with Variety, the actress revealed exactly who she'd like her character to kill in season two, saying that she's "having a very funny text line at the moment" with the series creator/showrunner Joe Barton about the one person she'd like to take out. And, considering that the show already has a confirmed second season on the way, she may just get her wish.

Who Does Keira Knightley Want to Kill During 'Black Doves' Season Two?

Needless to say, but if you don't want to be majorly spoiled on how the first season of Black Doves ends, do not read any further!

'Black Doves' Creator Offers First Season 2 Plot Details
Image
Unlike most Netflix shows, the spy thriller series Black Doves was immune from sudden cancelation from the get-go, having been renewed for Season 2 before the first outing was even released. Now that the series has debuted and hugely impressed both critics and audiences, creator Joe Barton has teased what we can expect from Black Doves Season 2 and the continuing adventures of Keira Knightley’s Helen Webb.

Speaking with Netflix Tudum recently, Barton teased the plot of Black Doves Season 2, revealing that he likes the idea of seeing Helen getting “pulled deeper into the world of spies having been so close to leaving.” As her husband, Wallace, edges closer to the top job as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, this inevitably “increases the pressure and the danger on her as a spy.”

“Just seeing the tension of that, seeing Sam back in London … I would like to see more Eleanor and Williams,...

10 Funniest Williams & Eleanor Moments In Black Doves, Ranked
Image
Williams (Elia Lily Hyland) and Eleanor (Gabrielle Creevy) were some of the funniest characters in Black Doves, and these 10 moments were their most hilarious. Though Black Doves is a show about assassins, spies, and international relations, it's also a Christmas show. As such, it had to have at least a bit of holiday joy and cheer, and it mostly accomplished that through its unique sense of humor. Black Doves' jokes and funny moments are a big reason it's one of the best shows on Netflix, and Eleanor and Williams are a big reason it was so humorous.

The cast of Black Doves was filled with funny characters who had great dynamics with each other, like Sam Young (Ben Whishaw) and Helen Webb (Keira Knightley). Williams and Eleanor, however, proved themselves to be the resident comedians of Netflix's spy thriller. Both Creevy and Hyland were tremendously cast as the oddball pair of assassins,...

Image
Black Doves episode 2, “A Little Black Dove,” takes viewers back a decade in the first scene. It’s 2014, and Helen, played by Keira Knightley, sits down for a job interview as a translator for a company. If you watch episode 2 back to back with episode 1, it’s definitely a change of pace, almost a pause. Remember, Helen and Sam (Ben Whishaw) were about to confront the person who killed Helen’s lover, Jason (Andrew Koji).

Anyway, Helen tries to leave the meeting, but the man gives her a phone number. He explains that she’ll be calling a woman, Reed (Sarah Lancashire). The man says that she needs to tell Reed that she is “a little Black Dove.

Why Sam "Owes" Helen In Black Doves Season 1
Image
Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Black Doves season 1.Sam Young (Ben Whishaw) owed Helen Webb (Keira Knightley) a debt in Black Doves season 1, but Netflix's spy thriller hid the reason for that debt until the middle of the season. As a spy thriller, there are several questions the cast of Black Doves sought to answer in the show's first season, such as who killed Ambassador Chen and, more importantly to Helen, who killed Jason Davies. One question the characters weren't concerned with answering, but that the show hid from the audience for a fair amount of time, is why Sam owed Helen some sort of debt.

When Reed (Sarah Lancashire) first hired Sam, she said that she needed someone Helen could trust and that Sam owed her. However, Black Doves didn't immediately reveal why Sam owed Helen or where their mutual trust came from, aside from the fact that they were longtime friends.

Why Sam Didn’t Kill Hector Newman In 2017 In Black Doves
Image
Sam Young (Ben Whishaw) didn't kill Hector Newman (Luther Ford) the first time he got the chance in Black Doves, and his mercy caused all sorts of problems in Netflix's spy thriller. The reviews for Black Doves have praised the spy-thriller for being an interesting combination of a spy thriller and a heartfelt Christmas series. That combination of high-stakes action and endearing shows of emotion and humor helped Black Doves debut with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Combining heartwarming moments and brutal spy stories also opened the door to some major problems, however.

Lenny Lines (Kathryn Hunter) hired Sam to kill the Newman brothers, including the young Hector. However, he refused to pull the trigger on the last one, which snowballed into a massive number of problems for him and the rest of the cast of Black Doves. Hector brought a team to kill Sam at the apartment he shared with...

‘Black Doves’ Creator on Casting Keira Knightley in Netflix Christmas Spy Thriller
Image
[This story contains some spoilers from Black Doves.]

It rarely ends well for spies who are in love in Hollywood movies and TV series. Inevitably, they betray or shoot their partners out of cold-hearted duty.

But that didn’t stop Joe Barton, creator of Black Doves, the Netflix Christmas spy thriller now streaming, from encumbering star Keira Knightley as dedicated wife and professional spook Helen Webb with Ben Whishaw’s Sam Young, a fellow spy and assassin, in all matters of love and relationships.

Barton tells The Hollywood Reporter that when writing the first season of Black Doves (the series has already been renewed), he wanted to get away from the glitz and ritz of John Le Carré’s Cold War spycraft to portray two “fallible human beings who just happened to be in this heightened world of espionage and murder and all that.”

For cloak and dagger skullduggery, tune in to Peacock’s 10-episode thriller The Day of the Jackal,...

‘Black Doves’ Review: Netflix Spies Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw Make the Most of Blue Christmas
Image
In the second episode of “Black Doves,” a new spy series (this one on Netflix), the woman we’ve come to know as Helen Shaw (Keira Knightley) is seen in flashback interviewing for the job she’s now working. Well, kind of.

“Daisy” (her name at the time) answered an advertisement for a position as a translator, but as becomes clearer as her questions continues — sharing details about Helen’s personal history that no typical hiring manager should know — she’s not being asked to convert German to English. She’s being asked to decode identities, intuitions, and ideas. She’s being tested to see if she has the emotional capacity to hide in plain site, to react calmly to obvious provocations, and to get more out of the person sitting across from her than he gets from her. She’s being asked to become a spy.

But, quite notably,...

‘Black Doves’ Review: Keira Knightley Is Back in Action in Netflix’s Twisty Spy Series
Image
“Black Doves,” Netflix’s latest thriller series, has it all. The dialogue is both clever and funny. There’s lots of political intrigue and Keira Knightley hasn’t been this action star since “Domino.” The award-winning actor Ben Whishaw is awesome as usual and there is one (literally) bloody shocking twist after another.

The setting is London during the Christmas holidays where Helen (Knightley) is married to UK Secretary of Defense Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan), the mother of adorable fraternal twins and unbeknownst to Wallace, a spy feeding much of what goes on at 10 Downing Street to secret intel group, Black Doves. Helen’s information has been “lucrative” according to her handler. As is the case with these types of plots, when something goes very wrong and threatens to expose Helen, her long-time ‘Dove’ conspirator Sam (Whishaw) is sent in to help.

Up until this upset, life on the surface...

Black Doves season 1 ending, explained, and how it sets up season 2
Image
The Black Doves season 1 finale, “In the Bleak Midwinter,” ties up all the loose storylines in a neat bow on top of a Christmas present.

After Sam (Ben Whishaw) is kidnapped by the Clarks at the end of episode 5, he wakes up in the same room as Kai-Min Chen (Isabella Wei) and Eleanor (Gabrielle Creevy). The Clarks are holding them hostage. Helen Webb (Keira Knightley) has a plan, though, because she’s seen the tape and knows what really happened!

Who killed the Chinese Ambassador?

On the tape that Jason Davies (Andrew Koji) hid for Helen Webb to find in the jewelry, it reveals that Trent Clark, the son and heir to the Clark family, who are basically shadow-controlling the British government, killed Ambassador Chen (Andy Cheung) on accident. He was at Kai-Ming’s apartment to bring her heroin, but the Chinse ambassador confronted Trent about supplying his daughter. In the scuffle,...

Black Doves
Image
There’s no shortage of spy thrillers on TV and no end of tired tropes to dodge if you want to make something original. Written by Joe Barton, Black Doves doesn’t try to avoid the genre clichés, but instead finds its very individual personality by mashing and twisting them into something surprising, thrilling and much more fun than 90 per cent of current offerings.

Keira Knightley plays Helen, the wife of a senior government minister (Andrew Buchan). Helen lives a plush life of expensive coats and champagne dos in her high-ceilinged London home. She is also a spy, working for an espionage agency that sells secrets to the highest bidder.

Knightley squeezes everything out of her best role in years, ably gliding through comedy, action and domestic drama.

The show opens with multiple murders. One of the victims is a man (Andrew Koji) with whom Helen was having an affair.

Keira Knightley's New Netflix Spy Series Debuts With 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score Ahead Of Premiere
Image
Keira Knightley's new Netflix spy series debuts with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score ahead of its premiere. The English actress is known for both independent films and blockbuster movies, particularly period dramas. After a small role as Sabé in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Knightley broke through with her performances in 2002's Bend It Like Beckham and Love Actually the following year. However, Knightley rose to stardom for her role as Elizabeth Swan in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies from 2003 to 2007.

During the 2000s, Knightley explored other roles outside the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, including her portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet in 2005's Pride & Prejudice, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She continued to appear in period dramas, such as Atonement and The Imitation Game, the latter earning her another Oscar nomination, this time for Best Supporting Actress. At the age of six,...

Spy Shows Are Back: Joe Barton & Jane Featherstone Talk Netflix’s ‘Black Doves’ & The Return Of Espionage
Image
With Black Doves, The Day of the Jackal and The Agency all hitting TV screens in the space of a few weeks, premium spy shows feel in vogue.

Jane Featherstone and Joe Barton concur. They are the producer and creator behind Netflix’s Black Doves, which stars Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw as agents who operate amid a whirlwind of secrets.

“It’s back,” Featherstone told Deadline. “Everyone’s making ’em. The world is in a place where you need spies because there are so many barriers and nation state issues it just feels like the time.”

Featherstone, who runs Black Doves maker Sister, said these trends come in circa-25-year cycles, citing Spooks, the hit BBC series she produced in the 2000s. She said she is “definitely” being pitched more spy shows at present but there is room for plenty. Black Doves had a two-season order before it even premiered,...

Black Doves Review: Keira Knightley's Ambitious & Crafty Spy Thriller Is A Genre-Blending Success
Image
Keira Knightley shines in and elevates Netflix's espionage series Black Doves, making it one of her most impressive television efforts. Knightley recently led the cast of Hulu's true crime drama Boston Strangler, which most found engaging albeit derivative of other serial killer series. While the same could be said about Black Doves and the spy thriller genre, creator Joe Barton (The Lazarus Project) morphs several genres – action, thriller, romance, comedy – into an ambitious series that is thoroughly enjoyable.

Black Doves is a drama series that centers on the complex interplay of espionage and personal relationships. Focused on Helen Webb, a seasoned spy striving to balance her covert missions with a turbulent family life, the series delves into themes of loyalty, betrayal, and sacrifice. Starring Keira Knightley, it examines the moral ambiguities faced by those who live double lives in service to their countries.
